So what if Brian Wilson had the Wrecking Crew? The rest of The Boys were out touring. And you're going to tell me the Beatles never used session musicians, especially for orchestral arrangements? Plus, the Beatles needed George Martin to raise them to the level of greatness they achieved. Brian Wilson COMPOSED, ARRANGED, AND PRODUCED their best records himself.

thank you for that. you are lucid. brian composed Pet Sounds by himself. I promise McCartney couldn't do such a masterpiece alone (he even admitted that Brian had essentially done the impossible).

As a Englishman I actually prefer The Beach Boys over The Beatles. Although I am a big fan of both bands, I always preferred The Beach Boys. I think the Beach Boy's were better musically personally. It all comes down to personal opinion and taste. Brian Wilson is the biggest musical genius of both bands. His genius far outweighed The Beatles individually, its just a question of whether his genius outweighed all 4 of the Beatles put together.

The Beatles got out of the game on top, The Beach Boys started to really wane after 1973 Holland. If The Beach Boys had simply STOPPED after Sunflower and Surf's Up, their legacy would have been emboldened as a truly phenomenal piece of work. The Beach Boys hold a special place in my heart, so do The Beatles. Love them both, appreciate them both and WISH I WAS THERE!!! Born 1979. Thank you for the video. Peace from Tasmania.

As a Beach Boys fan, I agree that they would have been better off retiring, or just performing after the Holland album. Maybe focused on solo albums.

I'll put this in Brian Wilson's favor, he knew precisely what he wanted in his head and that's what he was going to get from whichever musicians were capable of putting it out. John and Paul were maybe 95% sure of what they wanted, especially when it came to additional musicians or orchestrations. George Martin was often the realiser of those things. I think the Beach Boys personal lack of musicianship was compensated by their effortless vocal abilities. Both acts had a great team. The Beatles had George Martin and Brian had The Wrecking Crew. The sad thing about John Lennon passing is that I think he would have really enjoyed the technology that he missed. I could easily see him all over social media communicating with people. He probably would have been on RU-vid with his guitar giving it away for free. The Beatles were the soundtrack of my childhood and for many years I refused to listen to anyone else, but then the Beach Boys got their foot in the door and I have loved both bands ever since. Apples and oranges I suppose. Great upload!

Great show last night. Brian Wilson and the Wrecking Crew were incredible, but as you mentioned the Beatles were largely self-contained and more of an actual band than the Beach Boys. McCartney is an unbelievable talent. His range is incomparable. We’ll be doing a deep dive on this topic very soon. Great job last night guys!

The Beach Boys were self contained through the first 5 albums! They also played on all the tracks on Today. Carl played on every album. That's Not Me from Pet Sounds is all Beach Boys. When I Grow Up is all Beach Boys as well with no wrecking crew! It's really only 3 or 4 albums that featured the wrecking crew.

The Beach Boys had some real highs no doubt, but there is no comparison. The Beatles were the Big Bang. They led the way with revolutionary music, fashion culture. You can’t overstate their importance. By the late 60’s though there were many other artists on their level musically, but what they accomplished in a mere 7 years is staggering and will remain so indefinitely.

Capo, very good point. I may add, although many artist reached the level of the Beatles, very very few had the high level consistency as the Fab. The Beatles have the best, and deepest, bench in music. I think what set the Beatles apart was of course their originality and creativity, but it was also there consistency and the strength of their deep tracks.

i agree that beatles is all around a far greater band than beach boys, especially when comparing their discography.. but for the point of instrumentalism, i think i'd have to disagree beatles is more of a rock band, a kind of band that would experiment with their own instruments while recording, closer to jazz and rock, while brian's approach is closer to classical music, where he composed every note on paper and the wrecking crew basically played them note by note i think paul and lennon is possibly the greatest songwriters in history, they are unique in their very own way, but when it comes to pureply the composition itself, brian wilson is a much more sophisticated composer, i think he is one of the only musicians deserve to be called a "musical genius" yes, lennon mcartney, and even george harrison's level of songwriting is simply unmatched by anyone, but brian wilson's composing ability is also far surperior and just as "unmatched" as the beatles in songwriting lennon - a quite lazy man, yet delivered some of the most complex songs (musically and lyrically) ever to the industry, he is the most gifted and unique amongst the beatles (or in the music industry in general) mccartney - a workaholic, who never stopped studying music theories and instruments-handling, self-improving and continuously developing his writing.. he can essentially play any instrument possible, and had written some of the most iconic songs in history, with a several-decade-spanned career, he is indeed the most talented amongst the beatles wilson - a musical genius, who possesses all fanciest abillity when it comes to composing, from an absolute perfect pitch to sight reading.. he essentially hears everything from the most complex compositions in his head.. his sophisticated use of harmonies, chord voicings and modulations, complex metrics, tonal ambiguity,.. seems so endless and almost effortless to him serious geniuses in music history!
@francovani393
@francovani393 Год назад
The Beach Boys could play their instruments live pretty adequately. Check out their live show in 64 but Brian had more complex arrangements most notably on the revolutionary Pet Sounds where he wanted the rest of the band to focus on vocals. The were a little insulted by this although Carl Wilson and brother Brian did contribute some guitar . Brian felt they could learn the material for live performances later. The Beatles to me won hands down but nobody could argue against the Beach Boys superior harmonies
@vitalmarcoortizdecandia4484
Even if you stop time in 1980, McCartney was still the most prolific composer with significantly more commercial success with The Beatles, Post-Beatles. Unlike Lennon, McCartney is a true multi-instrumentalist who learned how the studio works, and music arrangement. It doesn't help that Lennon just stopped recording original music for 5+ years. In so far as The Beatles versus The Beach Boys, I’ve never accepted this mindless debate. The Beatles simply delivered consistently superior commercial and artistic music. Except for a handful of songs, who talks about The Beach Boys anymore?

For me there’s no comparison The Beatles win hands down.

Beach Boys and Beatles both similarly started the same way playing early rock n' roll, but with their own twist that made them stand out and become #1 in their respective countries. Their music both progressed in the late 60s and became influential. They both were on Capitol records. The difference is, Capitol made too much money off Beach Boys earlier songs for them to progress and stopped promoting them, giving Beatles full reign. I love the Beatles more than Beach Boys, but Beach Boys have made some fantastic albums thru the late 60s and 70s no one was able to hear. So now a Beatles album in the wild is a dime a dozen, while a Beach Boys album is a diamond in the rough. I guess both bands won and lost in different ways.

Great Job! I, however, think that the Brian Wilson/Beach Boys have the edge over the Beatles. The Beatles were the first band I became aware of in 1964 at age six. Everybody, even in my home town in West Virginia, could name the members of the Beatles. Beatlemania was an incredible phenomenon to witness. That said, Brian Wilson at his best, in my opinion, managed to create music that is more emotionally charged and soul wrenching than any song by the Beatles. Both bands are "Genius" in their own right and for a time were mutually influential in their individual musical development. Very few artist could survive in the singles oriented demands of the record industry of the 1960s and maintain their quality of music let alone expand their creative development.

Just 7 years of recording, from the stone age of R&R/Pop/melody/etc.etc. to modern times. "I would like to be a Beatle"..."The Beatles were not a band. They were a miracle" (David Gilmour).

If you knock The Beach Boys for using outside musicians you should knock The Beatles for using an outside arranger and producer. The guy who arranged and produced Sgt. Pepper’s was not a Beatle. The guy who wrote, arranged, produced and sang on Pet Sounds was a Beach Boy. Fair is fair.

Regarding the BB vs Beatles, there is a generational component to this. As a millennial, I was raised on my uncle's 70s hard rock which owed more to the British blues boom than the Merseybeat sound (obviously Beatles legitimised British acts playing r'n'r in the Cliff Richard era, but speaking strictly in terms of music) and then I went down the metal rabbit hole before exhausting that and looking towards electronic music - so when I finally listened to the Beatles in earnest, I found the guitar sound rather underwhelming and the experimentation rather affected after going through the hard rock and metal canon (which, yes, is absolutely unfair since my perspective has been warped by hindsight). On the other hand, the Beach Boys instantly appealed due to Wilson's dreamy production and rejection of rock cliches (especially Today onwards) with complex songwriting parcelled in challenging pop, and the modular style and dense arrangements create these soundscapes that are similar in spirit to the most interesting of modern music. So there are hipster cliques of young people who are a tad disillusioned with classic rock (or in my case overdosed on it) and find Wilson more interesting than Lennon/McCartney - My Bloody Valentine shoegaze and chillwave and hypnagogic dream pop with Weyes Blood and Ariel Pink and the experimentation of Animal Collective which owes more to Brian's lush arrangements and oceanic production and harmonic vocabulary than the Beatles, and a lot of Japanese music was influenced by the BB which subsequently percolated into videogame soundtracks. Obviously I'm generalising and there will be many examples to the contrary, but I think the Beatles appeal to Boomers-to-X'ers-to-Xennials who enjoy the 60s-90s band of brothers rock groups (e.g., Britpop or Grunge or even "landfill indie") more than the idiosyncrasies of an auteur-driven group like the BB. But I do think people saying the BB sound more dated is rockism. And I'm obviously not saying the Beatles were crap; not at all. They were the best self-contained rock band of all time and by a distance. I just think they were more comfortable as a beat-and-ballad group and their experimentation was often half-finished song canvasses given to Martin and Emerick to finish and essentially remix.

This is the first RU-vid rant I 100% agree with. McCartney > Wilson, Beatles > Beach Boys. Does anyone actually sit down and listen to Pet Sounds? Can anyone name any other Beach Boys album? In contrast, how many times have you listened to Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt pepper, straight through?

The comments here are pretty sad, and embarrassing in regards to the Beach Boys. And I say this as a guy who leans slightly towards the Beatles over the BB. But Come on! First of all, they are not just Brian Wilson. Carl and Dennis were amazing singers and excellent songwriters. Al Jardine was also no lightweight. And they all played their instruments. Carl was a particularly great player. The Wrecking Crew were only used on a couple albums. Saying that the Beach Boys sound is dated whereas the Beatles is still fresh today is ludicrous and frankly, ignorant. The BB surf/hot rod songs are the equivalent of the Beatles early period, which sounds dated as well. Their best material came after Pet Sounds, but nobody heard the stuff...due to improper promotion and a lack of enthusiasm from the masses who wanted to hear nothing but surf and hot rod music from the BB. Plus, Brian was losing his mind, which did not help things at all. Also, people who think the only "good" Beach Boys is Pet Sounds are like those who say Pepper is the only artistic Beatles album. It was their most influential, but not their best. Listen to their post Pet Sounds albums. They are phenomenal and sound as new and fresh today as the day they were released. Albums like Holland, Wild Honey, Surf's Up, Sunflower and Love You are masterworks. Not to mention Smile. Listen to songs like Feel Flows, Long Promised Road, Heroes and Villains, Darlin' and Surf's Up and tell me these are not as timeless as the Beatles great works. Again, I say this as a huge Beatles nut. Get into their great later albums of the late 60s and 70s. Commercial failures, artistic masterpieces that only today, are beginning to be recognized.
@truthtransistorradio6716
@truthtransistorradio6716 5 месяцев назад
The Beach Boys played their own instruments up to the Today album. And mostly after the Smile sessions. In 63-64, the Beach Boys songs were better crafted and produced! Hard Days Night was a gret early album, and they had some good singles. But a lot of the early tracks were rubbish. Then, even on Pet Sounds, the song Thats Not Me is pretty much just the Beach Boys! Carl plays on most of Pet Sounds and Smile as well! The Beach Boys also produced themselves. George Martin was the Beatles producer.

Not that it matters since Wilson dictating his own arrangements to session musicians enhances his reputation, but type Did the Beach Boys Play On Their Records? (A "Pet Squares" Minisode) and the extent of the Wrecking Crew involvement before Today and after Smile has been exaggerated.

Your assessment of McCartney is so spot on….the comparisons between the Lennon vs McCartney legacy is futile. We lost Lennon early and Lennon chose not to record for 5 years. The comparisons stopped in 1980. By means of one of the most vast and varied discographies in history, along with the success of The Beatles, Wings (who were huge in the 70s, and his pure solo output thereafter, McCartney will be remembered as musical powerhouse whose output will likely never be matched. As you said his work posthumously will be reassessed and be revered IMO.

I think this was anything but unbiased. You dis Brian for having the wrecking crew, but that didn't come until several albums in. he had the wrecking crew because the Beach Boys were on the road. Brian wrote almost all those songs, produced them, arranged them. All those amazing harmonies. That was all Brian. The Beatles never pulled anything remotely close off. Poor Paul. All he had was John, the single greatest songwriting duo in history. John, George and Richard. And Sir George Martin. And Abbey Road where apparently they had no backing musicians? What did Paul do as a solo artist without John? Not much. Brian has done amazing work w/o the Beach Boys. Both were great bands, but if you listen to the PRODUCTION, the Beach Boys win hands down.

Yeah, but that's the key. Listen to the Beach Boys early stuff, it is youth distilled. They were 14, 16, nobody over 20. The Beatles were older and more experienced in life, their energy was totally different. The one thing the Beatles couldn't do was go back in time to the world and place the Beach Boys inhabited. You can't imitate youth once it's gone. The Beach Boys as instrumentalists, as a total package were as good or better than the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Grateful Dead and just about any band at the time, and the reviews will bare this out.

I don’t know about that, the 1971 surfs up album was one of the most modern sounding albums ever. The progressive beach boys continued with 1973s Holland, but it was nowhere close to the Beatles, but they were trying at least for a while to be contemporary instead of an oldies act

Beatles all day long over the beach Boys. Both exceptional bands. Beatles music has more complexities mixed in the batter. Hell even Lennon's rhythm playing used Barre chords most guitarists would shy away from. Paul's voice was at its peak with Wings. I can hear so many different versions of Paul's voice it astounds me. He's the master changeling. Between the Beatles and Wings there must be over 100 different Pauls in those 2 bands. I have never heard a singer like Paul. In his heyday his vocals were so versatile and powerful.

I loved your bit about McCartney's Hofner Bass. Yeah, it's a cheap piece of crap bass that he bought in Hamburg when he decided he was going to play bass. Because of the Beatles success going forward it became an iconic bass. The price of that once inexpensive bass skyrocketed once the Beatles took off and was referred to as the Beatles Bass and McCartney even endorsed them. If you bought one there was a tag hanging from the machine head with a picture of Paul. Those basses were so muddy sounding, had a terrible bridge, with a hollow body that felt like it was made of plywood. And the machine heads didn't hold a tune for more than a song or two. It's funny how an inexpensive piece of crap bass became an iconic instrument due to the Beatles success. McCartney got the best bass sounds once he started to use the Rickenbacker and his Fender Jazz bass. I was a huge Beatles fan and naturally had to have a Hoffner. I learned the hard way what a piece of crap it was.

Michael, I'm with you. Both bands were great. As far as the Beach Boys, it's close, but no cigar. The Beatles were transcendent. Brian made great records with the Wrecking Crew. And he was a genius level composer and arranger. McCartney is a genius as well, and so was Lennon in a different way. My favorite Beatles songs were usually John Lennon songs. He had an other-worldly element to his creativity. To have both of these guys in the same band made them basically untouchable.

Keep in mind a lot of John's creativity came to fruition due to the able hands of Paul and the 2 Georges. Post-Beatles he seldom did anything that wasn't just guitar/keys/bass/drums straightforward pop/rock.
@johnr8095
@johnr8095 Год назад
@@docsavage8640 I disagree with this. Early on most of the songs were John's. And they had very intricate and sophisticated melodies. Think of the harmonies of If I Fell or This Boy. Even some outakes like Bad To Me show how melodic John Lennon could be. But in the Beatles he started moving away from songs as pure pop songs and got more arty with them. So, in certain respects he was trying to make music that wasn't your run of the mill pop song or would be considered edgy. When he went solo he did away with pop hooks deliberately. The first album is stripped down to the bone and has almost none of the flourishes you'd find on his earlier songs. So, yes, post Beatles he did do songs that were more stripped down and I'd agree not as catchy. But that was by choice. He was rebelling against his life as John Lennon from the Beatles and didn't seem to want to make dumb pop songs. The funny thing though is that the album double fantasy came out after a five year hiatus where John Lennon just relaxed. And that album is full of catchy hooks. (his stuff anyway). So he had to put away the idea that he was the tortured Artist or the political figure and just go back to making pop records. And that was his catchiest solo record. So, it's not that he didn't have the ability. He just chose to not chase the pop stardom. because it sounds like he got burned out and bored doing the same old same old. He had to stop performing for a few years to get back to liking to make pop records.

Lennon and McCartney were equal geniuses. I agree that there is no such thing as which one is better, because they pushed each other to be better. All that being said, I’m kinda disappointed though that in your Titans of Songwriting, John Lennon is nowhere on the list while Paul McCartney is #1…… WHAT?? With all due respect to the likes of Billy Joel, John Mellencamp, and Michael Jackson, etc. John has written more iconic songs than either one of them. I don’t care about the longevity stuff… what Lennon produced while he was alive was legendary and deserves recognition if you are going to put McCartney at #1 and all those other guys ahead of Lennon.. When it comes to rock music, in my opinion there is no one that compares with John when it comes to Rock music. Now when it come to Paul, I can't think of another musical artist that has a catalogue of music that could compare with what he has done. What's more at 80 he still making new music, that is still fresh and innovative. Very rarely do you get two albums that sound the same You never know what to expect from a McCartney project. He is the most underrated musical artist the world has ever seen. He is a true artist as he will continue to make music until he is physically unable to or he has passed away.

i think theyre on the same page after all, John has an abundance of mellow songs, and on the other hand, Paul has lots of heavy tunes.. i mean, when it comes to songwriting, those 2 men are on the same page, simply.. unmatched here is my take on another comment, i thought i'd copy them here lennon - a quite lazy man, yet delivered some of the most complex songs (musically and lyrically) ever to the industry, he is the most gifted and unique amongst the beatles (or in the music industry in general) mccartney - a workaholic, who never stopped studying music theories and instruments-handling, self-improving and continuously developing his writing.. he can essentially play any instrument possible, and had written some of the most iconic songs in history, with a several-decade-spanned career, he is indeed the most talented amongst the beatles personally, the music of john touched me more deeply, but no doubt paul is just equally good on songwritng, and more talented in general

The issue with the Beach boys versus the Beatles is that the beach boys just released more bum albums over time, but remember their history is 60 years versus 10 years for the Beatles. The beach boys as a group could mainly be seen as a singles band with the exception of surfs up, sunflower, pet sounds, summer days and summer nights, and Holland. Those were all exceptional albums. But there was a lot of dross in between. Mainly because of the abdication of Brian Wilson as their leader and main songwriter, and for a while, abdications by Carl and Dennis as well.

If any of the Beach Boys had half as much talent as Brian, this would be a different conversation. The Beatles had the advantage with being a true band, and each elevating the other. Bands are just a different dynamic. Sure, the Wrecking Crew added their own touches to songs, the BB's wouldn't have been the same without them. But in the end, it was really *1 against 5.* I think Brian tried too hard to keep up or surpass the Beatles, helping facilitate his meltdown. It's my opinion that if completed as intended, Smile would have easily been the equal to Sgt Pepper's, if not surpass. It has aged much better than some of Sgt. Pepper's. Sadly, even Brian doesn't know what he would have done, and we have only a sketch for a masterpiece painting. But, as a CA boy born and raised the BB's were a huge part of my life in the 60's (as were the Beatles), but my parents were surf bums and the Beach Boys were part of the family. I'm a tad biased.
