It is great to see, and listen to two brothers who are, clearly, best of friends sharing their passion for music.

Loved watching this!! I am 19 and I can say there are a lot more kids that listen to old music. My band plays zeppelin, sabbath, Hendrix, grand funk, fleetwood mac, Janis Joplin, Beatles, and many more!!

I was the person who was fanning on you at the Rochester Induction ! I was so thrilled to meet you after watching your channel regularly. My 29 year old son shared!! An absolute pleasure meeting you and your brother John. Congrats on your Induction. You spoke so well about your beautiful family.

Rick and John, you are both so incredibly fortunate to have such a lasting "music" relationship as brothers and with your siblings. At nearly 61, I'm the eldest of five kids, and the only musician.

The 70's are a bottomless treasure trove of guitar music. Just amazing how much was made back then, often bands with just one album too.....damn good albums too.

As a 62 year old, listening these two old guys talk about playing all that metal and hard rock is kind of freaking me out.

Congratulations on your induction! Interesting to hear of your family's musical tastes. I was in high school with your sister Pat. It's nice to hear of her eclectic taste. Those of us , of a certain age, were lucky in that, variety on the airwaves was a common thing bridging a whole variety of musical styles. Jazz, pop, blues, rock and soul. Fertile times for the head and ears!

Rick, you should do an ongoing segment with your brother, "what makes this band great." The younger generations need to know about Creedence, The Who, Floyd, etc.

I am the youngest of 5 children. My parents had the first 4 children in 5 years. LOL!!! First born was Dec of 57 and the forth was March of 62. I was born Feb of 67, 5 years later. Each of my siblings had different tastes in music but also similar. I got all of that growing up and I loved it!!! Rush, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, Blondie, Black Sabbath, The Police, Boston, Aerosmith, Led Zep, Steely Dan, Heart, Bread....on and on. I love ABBA because of my parents. LOL!!! As I got into my teens, I started finding my own music but loved how I learned to find it.

Nice video discussing the music that your family members liked. The parents were huge late 50's fans of the Platters and other groups and top 40 radio in the 60's. As they got older, they were into "real" country music. I have only one sibling, my brother, who is 9 years and 6 months younger than I am. I am 67 and he doesn't like the 60's and 70's music that I love all that much. However, we both share our love of the 80's period of music. Surprising that in his teens, he was (and still is) a huge fan of Stray Cats. He got me hooked on their music. After he married, he wasn't a huge fan of 90's music, but I am obsessed with it. We are polar opposites of each other with everything else due to our age difference, but it is great that our shared music tastes give us something that we have in common and can reminisce together about the good times growing up. Music is the great equalizer.

Growing up in the 70s, here was the Saturday lineup: Afternoon was Victory at Sea, Ba Ba Blacksheep, then The Rat Patrol, then Wild Wild West, then Star Trek, then MASH, then Sha Na Na, then Lawrence Welk, then Happy Days and rounding it all out was Hee Haw. Now, talk about a stellar lineup! Sitting there with my dad eating from TV trays, I was the remote. We had 6 (NBC) 8 (CBS) then 13 (ABC) and occasionally if the weather was good we could get PBS out of Fort Wayne. If there was a boxing match my dad wanted to see the best, he send me up to the roof with a pair of Channel Locks. I would climb out my bedroom window, my brother would be the relay man with his head out the window. I would turn the antenna and my bro would yell "...a little more...STOP!...back up....THERE!" and that's where I would tighten the clamp.

I'm 71 and I completely identify with your older brother! But I remember Lawrence Welk religiously watched every Saturday night by my parents. Loved listening to you reminisce.

I tried to pay attention to this retrospective, especially considering the gap between both ends of your generation, Rick. What I kind of jumped to when I first read the title of the video was that someone should listen to different recorded performances by Steve Lukather. He’s a metalhead at the core, but the accumulated different tracks he recorded between the early 70s and the late 80s definitely encapsulate multiple points of view that both of you unpacked here. It’s like Luke on his own spanned the timeline to include (within his own unique formula) many reflections on such cats as Steve Howe, Larry Carlton, Jerry Garcia, Alan Collins, Dicky Betts, Eric Clapton, Edward Van Halen and Joe Satriani (among others) at the same time.

My father used to do funny Lawrence Welk imitations when the Welk show was on. I'm older than you both (about five years), I graduated high school in 1973, so my music was the late 1960s early 1970s. I loved hearing about the music you played and listened to. Congratulations on your induction Rick.

I graduated HS in 1978. I feel sooooo lucky to have grown up in the 60s and 70s experiencing the music of that time. Just incredible. Some bands I don't thing you've ever discussed that I believe are really good from that time are Uriah Heep, Trapeze, Moxy, Budgie and Starcastle. There were just so many great bands from that time. One song I would love to hear you talk about in a video is Lee Ritenour's arrangement of "Isn't She Lovely" from the Captain Fingers album. That song just blows me away every time I hear it. It was fun listening to this conversation. It sparked so many memories from that time and my time playing in a band. Take care, have a great weekend!

Played around Rochester NY in 1975 & 1976 with the band "Freeway". Our agent was Pete Morticelli with Pelican Productions. Used to play at "The Orange Monkey" and "Maxwells Silver Hammer" a lot. Couple of other bands that I remember from that area was "Weekend" (from Buffalo) and "Hadji". Great times for sure!

My folks sound similar to yours - Mom being into opera & classical with Dad into Fats Waller, the Gershwins, and Big Band stuff; but their tastes and those of my grandmothers merged when it came to Lawrence Welk. So, I salute you two fellow Lawrence Welk survivors! (They got better later in their lives, with Mom becoming a big B-52s fan and Dad getting into Dire Straits.)

This is awesome! To reminisce about stuff like this about ones parents is so cool! My old man had a huge briefcase filled with awesome tapes, we had a bunch of awesome varied records, with everything from Edith Piaf, the beatles, Santana, bill haley, etc!

Not a bad idea - a Beato Brother's deep dive into Lawrence Welk. I'm 61 and watched with my parents - then 10 years ago, would watch before a gig or going out to hear live music on Saturday nights. I'll start the conversation - Tom Netherton had a fabulous voice - and even better hair.

I used to have a poster for my solo acoustic gigs “Mostly 70’s mostly hits” so people would see that and say so you play oldies and I would reply “They were new songs when I started playing them” 🤓🎶🎸

We used to ask my parents for money to buy my dad a birthday present, and would then go and give them the new Led Zeppelin album 😁. My dad would only listen to Johnny Cash or John Denver. or the Carpenters. My mom would have John Lennon and the Beatles on repeat. Love the 1970's In the early 1980's , my parents finally agreed that Bruce Springsteen was allowed in the house because he "was a good man" ... which is true. Somehow, in spite of myself, both I am one of my sisters became musicians. Love listening to your stories,,

Really enjoyed the family history. When you kept pausing early on with each siblings likes, saying "and Boston", I thought "Doesn't everyone love Boston?!" I was influenced in different ways by each family member myself, so I liked how you ran down the list of everyone's preferences. While we all have our unique preferences, we are influenced to enjoy/appreciate different genres. This was a groovier segment than the title suggested. No complaints, just pleasantly surprised. Your musical household reminds me of mine - Mom with opera and classical, Dad, the pianist, with his big band, jazz, Peterson, brother guitar player with anything and everything with ripping guitar solos, my sister with Steely Dan, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, the list goes on. It's why I love a broad base of music....except opera.😉

I'm 66. my dad was into classical and martial music, he played trumpet in a marching band. My mom was into jazz. No overlap except miles and chet. Music was a constant in our house and in retrospect this may have been their greatest gift to me and my sister.

Hey, guys! Enjoy your visit and the show. I grew up at the same time being Rick's age. Just 90 miles east in Syracuse.

Interesting conversation and comments. I’m 61 and have been a huge music fanatic since I was a kid. My senior year in high school (79-80), I worked with some college kids that were in a band. Up to that point, I was into AC/DC, Boston, The Cars, etc. The summer after I graduated we had a keg party and I brought the killer boom box my parents gave me as a graduation present. One of those college guys had the newly released (1st) Pretenders cassette. We listened to it several times that night. That album really changed my taste in music. Later, that summer that same guy played me The Clash’s “London Calling” double album. That completed my transition to New Wave and Punk music, which eventually morphed into alternative (when it really was “alternative” e.g., early REM), early Grunge, and Alt Country (Uncle Tupelo, Steve Earle, etc). So though I’m now old enough to get the senior discount at Denny’s, I’m still into finding new “non-mainstream” music and still crank those favorites from college and my early 20s.

That was awesome sauce seeing 2 of the Beato brothers reflecting and conversing about their early musical tastes. No one mentioned Disco faves?

I loved seeing this, my mom and dad were the same. It was the 80s and 90s and my dad had records of Van Halen, Boston, Ozzy, The Guess Who... whilst my mom we were listening Rod Stewart, Toni Braxton, Tiffany.
