Caserta Vecchia is a Medieval Village , a hamlet of the Italian municipality of Caserta. It rises at about 401 metres above sea level and 10 km away from Caserta City. In the Medieval Era it constituted the main urban nucleus of Caserta. The Village is among the Italian National Monuments. The origins of Caserta Vecchia are still uncertain. However, according to historical texts
it was inhabited in 861 AD. It's name was Casa Hirta meanining "Village placed on Height".
In the year 1442, the Village was under the control of Aragonese. This resulted in long and progressing decline of the Village.
During this period, only the Bishop and the Seminary remained.
In the year 1602, the Norman domination began which brought
Caserta Vecchia to its maximum splendor. In the same year, current Cathedral was also constructed consecrated
to the cult of Saint Michael the Archangel.
The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel was the Cathedral of the diocese of Caserta until 1841.
The Castello di Caserta Vecchia was partly restored and was partly in ruins. The structure of the Castle is in irregular Hexagonal shape. However, the curtain walls and tower of the Castle are still well preserved.
