Dance isn't just about movement - it's a way to transport culture around the world. Ashley heads to Staten Island to move with the women of the Sri Lankan Dance Troupe of NY in the ancient art of Kandyan Dance.
She does great justice to this rare dance form. Beautifully and artfully covered. She really has gotten down to the details and shows a natural passion to know a foreign culture. Wonderful to see these committed dancers who are practicing this dance form in its authentic form!
Actually i was staggered to see a lady from New York in a passion with Sri Lankan cultural dance.. i really appreciate your enthusiasm on our traditional dancing styles..
I live in Sri Lanka and I do kandyan dancing. it's a rare dance for all other countries but is a lot common in Sri Lanka. You begin with the ' NAMASKARAYA ' .
You can come to our India to see the classical dances of our India which is just fabulous dances like Bharatnatyam , Kuchipuri , Kathakali , Mohiniattyam , Odishi , Chau , Katthak etc . Please you should come India and you must try those mind blowing dance forms from all over India . Love from India 💖💖🙏🏻
I haven't heard of this dance is there a reason for that ? And she's doing a video about kandian dancing ! Hope Sri Lankans can and will understand that ❗
I have read that during the British invasion period, certain techniques of the Sri Lankan fighting technique called "Angampora" were embedded into the steps of Kandyan Dancing as it was forbidden to practice Angampora by the British seeing it's effectiveness.
@@athula19 that's kinda obvious isn't it... One is a dancing style the other is a fighting style. What I meant was that I have READ (hence it is not a personal opinion I'm projecting) that certain aspects like the *mandiyata siteema*, certain body warming concepts and things of such sort that were similar to what was being done in angampora were passed down using dancing (including kandyan). So please don't *assume* that I've misunderstood or misinterpreted what the two are Mr. Gunawardana.
To get real detail steps about Anganpora you should get some secret information from people who are doing these things practices in Sri Lanka. Those costume's drums ( not a Getabera it's called Yakbera ) styles colours and secret warships doing some areas. ( Not every where) in this kandiyan dancin classes available in every where.
It was really great. I am quite surprised with the host adoptions for Kandyan dancing. It is really difficult to get those moves instantly unless dedicated practice for long. It is remarkable. Congratulations all of you. Proud to see these
omg its so refreshing to see a video of a yt woman talking abt sri lanka and not being all 'wOw sO eXoTiC aNd sTrAnGe hAhA' and like asks proper questions and is super respectful! mad props to her!
The Brits (Brits colonized the island by treaty as they failed to do so by war) banned the practice and education of our fighting arts among the new generations after colonization by shooting the masters, the crafty martial artists hid some forms of the Lankan arts of fighting in this dance. Especially in the male versions of this dance you may see some martial forms hidden in the dance so it could be practiced in the guise of a dance and by passing the ban.
@@blazingumbreon510 Oh shut up you Uncle Tom ... This is Sri Lankan and more Sri Lankan than your converted ass can ever be ... Your ancestors surrendered while we kept on fighting ... That is why today you are Christian and we are not ... Always remember that ...
Im also dancing kandyan and kandyan dance is so beautiful!!not only that learning kandyan dance is really hard for beginners.im doing this as a subject in my school.
Before i started my music career, i was a Sri Lankan traditional drummer since 10th age. That Geta beraya (Playing in this video) was my very first instrument. I am very proud to see this video & thank you sharing our culture to the world.
Really proud to see our traditions are maintained in countries other than Sri Lanka. Coz god knows we need it now, seeing how our own artists ruin our traditions here at home. The art must survive. Art is culture and history.
@@blazingumbreon510 what do you exactly wanna say...? Old or new, Local or foreign, traditional or not... there are things with values in different ways. I just appreciate whatever it is nice and not harmful.
Sri lanka is a small country in this world..but we have our won heritages , respect to this us girl who really wanted to identify other natural culture..and she did very well..a great job..
