This was played at my brothers funeral yesterday, he was only 48 years old. He just died suddenly. This song will forever remind me of him whenever I hear it from now on. Sleep tight my birthday twin ❤️
absolutely timeless - Heaton genius I was at Brixton Academy - Dec 1989 - "Welcome to the Beautiful South" Great gig... right up to near the end of the concert when some muppet from the crowd throws a plastic bottle at the band on stage - they all down instruments and walk off - last words into the mic "You're all a bunch of fu#@ing Londoners" ... pure Heaton genius. Hard to believe nearly 34 yrs has passed - but the music of my youth - still keeps me young ( well on the inside - the outside may have deteriorated a bit over time!!)
This was my parents wedding song. I was 2 and their bridesmaid in 1995. They split before we lost my Mum in 2015. But my Dad, on the note with the flowers at her funeral said:, “I love you ‘till my fountain, pen runs dry”. That line each time - gets me. This song brings so much happiness but also so much sadness at the same time. That’s how you know it’s a great song.
You, uh, you do know what the song's about, right? It's not a love song. It's a song about someone that seduces women, just so he can have inspiration to write love songs. He doesn't love them, he's just using them. I'm sorry, but your dad insulted your mother. 'I love you 'till my fountain pen runs dry' means 'I love you until your use to me has run out'.
@@BleachFan2588 some people relate lyrics or songs to different purposes. If this lyric meant something between the couple then it was relevant to them.
@@alunsheppard597 It was released 1st June 1989. That’s the 80’s. Maybe I should have put that the song is 32 years old. I remember exactly what I was doing at the time that’s why I know it was from that decade. 😃
Yes April, I know how you feel; but what a beautiful song to remember someone so very, very special. I knew a very special girl but due to circumstances it was impossible to have a relationship. I still love her to this day.
I grew up in the early 90s, and i remember my parents playing these songs to me and my sister as children. Never knew what the words meant, because of the language, but i remember the rythm and the sweet melodies, and they gave me great comfort. A feeling i will always carry with me, like an untouched treasure deep inside. And i am forever thankful for the Beautiful South for giving me this sweet piece of my childhood i will always carry with me.
Likewise in every single aspect, sister included! ! I was probably 9 or 10 when I first started listening to ‘carry on up the charts’ at home and in my dad’s Rover 400. They no longer have that album….. because I stole it 20 odd years ago. I loved it at age 10 and no less so at 35. Probably my favourite band and the childhood nostalgia I get when listening to their songs is priceless. I fucking love it!👍
Yes!! My dad had carry on up the charts on in the car all the time. Me and my sisters sat in the back listening along on our little road trips to the sea side
I'm from France and 48 years old and I bought the album "welcome to the beautiful south" so many years ago .. still love this song as if it was the first listening ! "Girlfriend" is also a very good song form this band ! Thank you
This song is genius. Makes you think of when you’d write the name of your crush on stuff at school and how that could change but ultimately telling someone they give you that feeling from when you were young and thought you were in love. Just booked to see Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbot in October after coming back across this song!
My mum use to have this blasting out, when I was younger,I used to be embarrassed now thats she's passed away,I listen to them to remind me of the good times ❤
Same, panning round to reveal he was using the typewriter and not playing the piano made me laugh....I don't remember seeing that back when I was....omg, 23 !
Thats the genius of Paul Heaton ... his songs are so layered with humour and cynicism ... you can never hear them enough .. one of the greatest songwriters of all time and yet few people would recognise him and even fewer know his name.
I was 10 when this was released. Took another 12 years to learn who the band was. The song haunted me for so many years. I knew just some of the lyrics and melody. I still love this song.
Watched Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott at Glastonbury last week, they were one of my highlights, was such a great set, everything from the beautiful South, house Martin's to their fantastic solo material, go see them if you get chance.
I'm gonna go see if they have any gigs on a weekend as I just had this album on the whole last week and never seen them before. Would be amazing if Brianna came back though and all women were there for their own versions, that would be 1 of the all time "you have to be there" gigs.
I couldnt agree more! There's a documentary on Paul Heatons song writing here on RU-vid I watched a couple of years back, if it's still there I'd recommend watching it:)
I used to love putting this on late at night the whole album carry on up the charts... such a great album. A lot of their songs sound like love songs but the twist in them and sarcasm is just genius. What a great album and great artists. Will always be a part of my life ❤
@stevemrmusic9 Agreed. This song is seriously clever. Masquerades as a pleasant, singalong ode to women, but is in fact a sinister tale of manipulation and abuse. Paul Heaton really doesn't get the recognition he deserves.
@@alexthorold3496 Ye, you need to go rethink a bit about what's being said lol, the guy doesn't love them at all and Def uses them for material and doesn't feel bad for it either, or if he does he never mentions it plus he talks about how he gets his "rightful place", presumably the (no 1 I hope to reap) but meaning no 1 in the charts and not her as his no 1 love lol. He talks more about the PRS business side of songwriting than her feelings lol
Born and still live in Hull. Paul and the gang were always out and about. Played Sunday football against Paul a few times. Always had time for fans, down to earth and nice bloke. Think he eventually went back home to Manchester but talks about his time in Hull fondly. Great band and they’ve definitely left their mark in the music industry
Love this from the bottom of my empty purse. Such clever, cynical lyrics with the very attractive Dave Hemingway on lead vocals as an added bonus ... and thanks for including my first name (and even one of my middle names) lads! 💜
Me and my daughter who just turned 13 use the lyrics as a secret wat way to communicate. She says Jennifer (my full name) I recite back Alison Philippa sue. We say we love each other by saying ‘pencil case’ 💖💖💖
At last!!! God knows why all the official Beautiful South videos were taken off RU-vid, there's a huge number of fans of this brilliant band, Paul Heaton still having Top 3 albums over 30 years since his first with the Housemartins! 😊 👏
Listening to this wonderful song in Lockdown I love you from the bottom of my pencil case... CLASSIC! LOVE IT :) Love the Classic Ole English names Phillapa, Annabelle Love and peace to All!
I'm so sad with nostalgia and a sadness for music. We grew up with great music people. This gem is timeless, personal and ethereal. My dad, my childhood, school, friends before teens...treasures that we didn't know we had until they were gone. I miss it all and I'd go back now..right now if I could.
it's easy to want to return to times of earlier happiness, BUT we cannot, we must press forward and make the best of our lives as we can. find things to do now that give you happiness, it may not cost a fortune.
For me this has changed over time from a funny pop song to one of the most sublime pieces of music ever written. Yes I grew up in the 80s .. so things like that happen :)
The brilliant beautiful south and the most underrated song of the 90s love the song and when you hear it you can't help singing along to it to me this song is a masterpiece brilliant and thanks to the person who put this up
Just watching this 2020 oct lockdown number 2 in ireland having a few whiskeys and i have to say this is making my day wat a tune and the vid is f*ckin class make jelly great again. No bands like this no more 😥
I remember when I was a school girl in Hull I lived on the next street to what Paul Heaton lived down. We knew each other just to say hello to. Memories ❤
