Check out the first episode of The Takeaway on ‪@PrimeVideo‬ now: • Fleabag Ending Explain... and (re)watch Season 2 of Fleabag here: bit.ly/PrimeVid... | Who is Becky? From the moment Beyoncé called her out on her 2016 album Lemonade, Becky instantly became the subject of memes, think-pieces, and Twitter mobs, all of them trying to discern the identity of "Becky with the good hair." But as it turns out, Becky is all around us. For centuries, the Becky has been a convenient archetype of a kind of white femininity, someone who may or may not have good hair, but who is largely identified by her obliviousness. The Becky is someone our culture both reveres and looks down upon for her appearance, her privileges, and her willfully naive behavior. Here’s our Take on the Becky as privilege personified, the damage she causes-both willfully and unintentionally-and whether there could be more to Becky if we’d just give her a chance.

A white bro who cruises through life on good looks, rich parents who pay to fix any (likely many) mistakes he makes and a system that assumes that he's always innocent until proven undeniably guilty , is more overtly racist than a Becky with a dash of misogyny mixed in, he goes to a prestigious university regardless of whether or not he deserves to be there and when he graduates/ gets older he likely ends up in a position of power and influence over people in a lower social standing than him

Beyonce’s “becky with the good hair” was not fully for white women. It was for black men who put down black women by comparing our “nappy hair” to their “soft and easy to manage” hair. Its more of a race thing than movie trope and I feel like you guys did not touch on this well.

I wish u guys would have dissected Beyoncé's "Becky with the good hair" in a separate video, because the meaning behind that line has SO many layers to it; that directly ties into race, and the experience black women have being discriminated against our hair. This trope is still valid, however the movie trope is not interchangeable with who she was referring to. great video tho.

It's also interesting to see how Becky/Karen/Miss Ann are all different iterations of the same woman but have all evolved over time. Specifically with Becky, she was definitely more "basic" in the 90's so her character arch just revolved around her kinda looking outside of herself and using her saviour complex to help others, but now I feel like she's moving into the next version of herself. A version where culture vulturing and a superficial understanding of social issues makes her seem more evolved but the manipulation is still there just hiding under the surface. Chanel Oberlin is also my favorite caricature of a Becky.

“Basic” is an insult meant to temper any delusions of inherent superiority. The attack on Becky’s “basicness” (mediocrity) is just a latent reaction to the centuries-long, blind and vehement glorification of her - a truly self-centered, young white woman, who makes no substantive contribution to society, and yet has been assigned a very high value, and is deemed worthy of protection by society, anyway. “Basic” doesn’t have any sort of objective, rational basis... hence, there are people of all races who like pumpkin spice lattes thanks to functioning taste buds. As a black woman, I fucking love them. I also love Cher and Torrence and resent their characters being shown in this Take, but Amber or Courtney respectfully, yes.

I gotta say, disappointed here. Before Becky became a meme that tons of people didn’t understand, Becky was very specific to a white woman and her relationship with Black people. Beyoncé’s line was relatable to any Black woman who has been made to feel inferior or less attractive to white women due to skin tone and hair texture. It feels like this video boiled it down to spoiled well meaning white girl and that’s not what Becky is. This video didn’t touch enough all race at all.
@cassiemackey3204
@cassiemackey3204 3 года назад
Definitely. I feel like the conclusion was very “white feminist”, which basically ignores the real underlining issues in relation to race. The “Becky” trope was created by the black community. And I didn’t like how it again paints young white females as the victims. “We should look beyond their ignorance and put them in the right direction” or whatever they said didn’t exactly sit well. I personally don’t like that the oppressed (which could be anyone) has to always be the teacher.

YES! The point of Becky is that she is held over black womens head as the white girl she could never be and also as the woman a guy will leave her for-- usually after using up the black woman than spoiling the white woman. Huge examples are black male celebrities whos first wife is black and once they become successful they marry a white or "ambiguously exotic" woman who is often a white woman (And tiny but of another background) with lots of fake tanner as well as straight shiny hair.

Usually these videos hit tropes right on the head but this one came off a bit... insensitive? because the message is that if we allow beckys to change, they will. But beckys don't change because they're given the opportunity to, they should want to change on their own, after maturing and realizing that they're inflicting harm. This video puts the pressure of change on *other* people, specifically Black people to "help" the becky change. It's not a Black person's responsibility to tell you how to be a better person!!! The becky has had so many opportunities to change, they have the privilege of second, third chances and they have these opportunities to change (that so many BIPOC aren't given), so opportunity to change is not the issue. The real issue is whether beckys decide they actually want to change themselves. Don't put the responsibility on other people to "allow" the becky to change (BIPOC will always welcome these changes, if they're genuine!), esp if those people are ones suffering BECAUSE of her.

Not all white girls are as privileged as Emma or Cher in Clueless. Jane Austen was much less privileged, that is why she could write about it more clearly. Plus, Rebecca in Rebecca, Becky Sharpe in Vanity Fair (and maybe Rachel in Friends? I forget) are coded Jewish. Rebecca in Rebecca is murdered because her husband finds her a fake, someone who just commits to English stereotypes because they let her get away with what he sees as betrayal. The second time you read Rebecca, you realise she was just as likely just a victim of his jealousy. Again, this channel misses the anti semitism of the fake 'princess' in all this talk of basic, wanting the label rather than quality etc that has been very tied up with anti semitism. The name Rebecca - especially spelt Rebekah - is associated with Jewishness.

@@red_calla_lily I agree, at times ,women engage internalized misogyny via projected anger amidst the toils of men . It is indeed a concern we should discuss,. However, the central question is , "What does SISTERHOOD look like, if we wish to achieve it via feminism?" "Is multiracial, intersectional feminist sisterhood possible, or even worth attempting?" While some women find themselves innocently involved in an oppressive dynamic, the "Becky" (as due ascribed) is often very aware of her privilege's and exploits Black women, Black people, all POC, and marginalized people, etc upon which she can display such exploitation. Many a White women (within the topic of feminist sisterhood) very much harm other women. Many people (whether straight, white, able bodies, etc) exploit their various privileges to harm others or benefit ontop of the devalued bodies of the marginalized (so ye, it is not just White women whom engage in such behavior). Secondly, I shall sadly inform you that there is a "Gender war" between Black cis-het men and Back women + LGBTQ right now because Black cis-het men are indeed finally being confronted much more directly (in a overtly observable and identifiable manner) by this generation due to the power of social media. In fact, everyone who engages and perpetuates oppressive systems shall be confronted by this generation. it seems. Hopefully, good societal healing shall resurface from all of this discourse. I supposed the lovely OC was more so compassionately informing of psychological effects of such oppressively dynamics.

Yes, I'm actually disappointed in this video because I don't think they did enough research. Becky in the black community has always just been another word for a white girl. It's like they were so busy trying to make a statement about (white) Feminism that they failed to understand the origins and the meaning of the term, and how that term relates to mostly the point of view of white women through a black person's eyes. To us, all white girls can be a Becky, even if you aren't "basic". White feminists have a really hard time with intersectionality, and stuff like this shows that. This is also the problem with White people taking over black slang, they almost always change the meaning, and then they get to redefine them, and then the original meaning gets completely lost. Becky means white girl and white girls most times come with microaggressions, entitlement, and arrogance. But ultimately it's just synonymous with a white girl, not some sort of misogynistic statement about her interests.

One thing not mentioned is how hard Becky works to maintain her normative, conventional beauty as a means of accessing privilege and obliviousness. I used to live with two white girls who were not naturally blonde, or thin, but they worked so hard to fit that convention. One of them was Puerto Rican and Irish and hated her naturally curly hair and bigger hips and crash dieted all the time to be a "Becky". Cause they both knew blonde skinny young white woman = privilege and power and homogeneity which is the ultimate white supremacy superpower. You become just Becky with the good hair. Not defined by your race or sexuality although it goes without saying that they are cis-, by conforming you become an individual in the eyes of the system which is amazing. Poor Becky needs protection against her angry black women coworkers (who are never just a name, always a race and a character trait). Interesting take on this, but I don't even think many of these characters shown are Beckys, but rather "basic bitches". Even in reference to mean girls, I wouldn't say Karen is a Becky, she's just naïve and pretty. Regina George is more so a Becky. Becky's aren't entirely innocent white women who don't understand their role in society, they're manipulative, racist (knowingly/or unwittingly), and are considered special because of their white femininity. I agree that the Beckys should be constructively criticized, that is the basis for the term--which is coined by people in the black community to give credence to an aspect of white supremacy that isn't overtly racist. But it is not everyone's job to guide this lost soul to empathy. She has to understand her privilege, she has to stop appropriating, she has to be a true ally--not only an ally when she can find ways to increase her status and privilege. In a recent show, I would say Lexie in Little Fires Everywhere is a Becky. Granted she seems to come to an understanding of this. Becky is not just abut being beautiful and boring, it's about dominance, which is why they become Karen's and Susan's in old age.

“...Beckies don’t have to become Karens all it takes is us looking beyond their good hair and trying to find a good heart.” I strongly disagree for several reasons the first being that logic shifts the blame and responsibility of white woman privilege onto everyone else. Never forget that change comes first and foremost from WITHIN. No amount of outside validation will change a Becky who doesn’t want to change and most don’t. It’s understandable, their lives are pretty great. The second reason I disagree, placing the role of “morality compass” on the rest of the world, only feeds into a Becky’s deranged narcissism. If you want people who see inherent value in other people, stop coddling them and placing them on a pedestal. Asking the world to continue trying to be some moral center for a group of women who’ve shown themselves to be inherently selfish is emotionally manipulative and crippling. Also, the backlash many Becky’s face isn’t about male attention. I’m over pop culture trying to make any critique on white women “a feminist issue” that’s narcissistic and toxic at best. At worst it’s a gross manipulation tactic often seen in the older white woman counterpart, Karen. I could continue about why portraying girls with different values isn’t a bad thing and why portraying the idea that “all girls have to get along” is inherently harmful and plays into tactics of relational aggression which is, the child’s play version of Karen like actions, but I’m not sure how that would be received.

@@loliwinston1007 first I want to note that your choice of language is leading. What I mean by that is, your word choice has placed a stigma onto the reader. Girls not getting along with each other does not immediately mean they’re “vilifying and hating.” Women and girls are just humans at the end of the day and most humans do not like every human they encounter that is normal. So putting this idea into girls heads that they have to “get along” because they share the same body parts is ignorant and unrealistic. In fact, that logic excludes a lot of people who are non binary, gender non conforming, and trans. Furthermore, Men are very forthcoming with their feelings as a general rule of thumb and just as much as women compete for men, men in return compete for women. Those things cancel each other out. I think that limiting the term Becky to conventionally attractive and desirable White women removes the accountability that ALL White women have for their racism and ignorance. At least to Black people, a Becky refers to a white woman who leverages her place in society to assert superiority over non-White people ( whether she knows it or not). My idea of a Becky is that no matter how basic her interests, no matter how dull her personality or however she looks, her whiteness will always place her above other women, especially Black woman. When Beyonce said "Becky with the good hair" she was referring to a catch-all White woman, a person that Beyonce could never be although Beyonce is one of the most ( if not the most) beautiful women in the world.

Hi, you just aked me something in a comment I couldn't find, so in response, I'm not someone with the philosophy of "all lives matters", I think I always saw racism and sexism both as social problems with the same source but differents in subjects. Tha fact that feminism is still an insult in some countries or at least something you have to keep secret made me cautious in some way, I had a clasmate in college who everytime I said I'm a feminist he started to talk about feminazis and "crazy men-haters" wich I always responded that I don't hate men just for been men and I don't want to kill them or hurt them or anything, but he never listened to me, he was the kind of guy who insisted that if a woman was harassed she just have to go tothe police and the problem is automaticaly solved. So when I see a comment saying we have to stick together and fight men who are our opressors I guess I can't help to put out this side of me who feels that I have to prove myself that I'm not a crazy person who wants to eliminate male population. I feel like all societies are misogynists by default and we are trying to grown out of that concept but sometimes we can't avoid fall into them

I’ve always perceived “Becky” as meaning “silly, basic and at least passable looking young white woman” and “Karen” as “nosy, paranoid and privileged white woman”. I understood the hostility of those terms, what those terminologies were trying to point out. And I used to find them funny. But it is time to evolve. At this point both terms have been taken over by men simply wanting to be dismissive towards women they don’t like or agree with. Somewhat funny and sociologically insightful terms have been reduced to being shields for misogyny. It’s unfortunate when that happens.

It gets frustrating to perpetually come up with terms to define our experiences, have them co-opted, decontextualised, and then discarded. Over and over this happens. Chasity probably felt over looked and ignored by everyone because Bianca is white and “pretty”, while Chasity doesn’t fit into the American beauty standard. And is only ever seen as Bianca's friend and not a full person. (Making me think of the Southern belle with her personal black slave as a lady's maid) She may have also felt that she couldn’t talk to Bianca about these feeling because she “could never understand”. That their friendship has on a equal footing ( Bianca being superior because she is white and always in charge in the relationship), these reasons could have made her resentful towards Bianca.

@@katherinelambert4662 It was the film that only depicted Chastity as only Bianca's friend though, whereas Bianca the character was just friendly, as far as I can remember. Maybe she was a bit oblivious, because she didn't realise the boyfriend only wanted to be popular, so she could have been oblivious to the status thing as well, it makes sense. As far as I can remember though, Bianca was the only one who was friendly with someone from another background though, as a character trait her being 'oblivious' for want of a better term might not have been wholly bad. Kat is oblivious as well, sometimes it is good, sometimes she is just rude. It was also realistic that Bianca would be snappy if she had broken up with someone and her best friend immediately started dating him, though, which is the clip they show in this video. It would be hurtful. I think there was a dynamic of Bianca taking charge now that I think about it, although I think Chastity goes along with it because Bianca is popular so it benefits her, so when she does something that hurts Bianca but benefits herself she is surprised, she assumed they were better friends. Chastity wasn't just friendly, she was attracted to Bianca's status, which is discussed a bit in the video. Once the popularity based on looks is gone, she is surprised by how few friends she actually has.

Hi! I generally agree/appreciate a lot of what’s done on this channel but I feel as though this video may have been a bit out of touch. I think the Becky with a heart of gold thing is an odd angle to go with, that is very much a case by case basis for people to discern for themselves. Yes, characters like Cher and Torrance are an acceptation but not the rule. We needed you to look at this from the perspective of black/other POC who are majorly affected by white women who fit this stereotype. There are real life beckys who have caused black and brown people their lives because they would rather continue harming others and stay in their privilege bubble. Of course there are nuances in all people but to just focus on the good ones and not talk nearly as much about the harmful ones is doing more harm then it is good. You’re telling others to do the work and give further protection to white women who already have so much privilege and for everyone else to just see past their own trauma and past experiences to be okay with it. Just recently around 55 percent of white women voted for trump and about 25 percent of those women fit the Becky age range, that’s a lot of Becky’s to pardon. I understand this could have been a perspective issue but please, when talking about the issues of black women; try and have them there and listen to what is being said to you and really try and understand and use your privilege to amplify their voices. Thank you, good night.

First things first, as always I appreciate that you've opened the dialogue on such a touchy, yet timely conversation. That being said, I have a few questions. Why is it presumed the Becky has more agency to change? As a black woman, I've seen the redemption and corrosion go both ways at every age. Emmett Till's accuser was a Becky who in the end of her life, presumably a Susan by that point, admitted what she did. To what effect, we'll never know, and I'd never ever excuse what she did--knowingly or unknowingly, but if I were being obscenely and undeservedly optimistic, could that be her attempt to undo Becky/Karen/Susan evolution? Isn't the problematic White Savior often a Karen trying to change being a Karen? Also, even though I don't think there was a deep dive into the vilification of Karen, it felt like even less of an investigation into the danger of Becky from a psychological, fiscal, and social/legal standpoint, which seems pretty ageist to me. Why is it everyone else's responsibility to teach Becky? The rest of *US* have to learn to be kind, considerate, compassionate, and aware on our own, in spite of all we face. One thing this year has awakened me to is the complacency with which we congratulate white people for doing the bare minimum while BIPOC do all the heavy lifting. That's exhausting. Just something to think about-- I know it's hard to tackle hot button things that currently entrench us. I commend the work wherever it arises but still challenge some of these notions.
@Kayla-ep5gm
@Kayla-ep5gm 3 года назад
Accountability is also a place for Beckys to start at. Like you pointed out, why do they need to have their hand held through being educated on their privilege (white fragility), especially since it is no one's responsibility to teach us, just as non-white people have learned to be "kind, considerate, compassionate, and aware", why are they just supposed to be forgiven for the obliviousness and complacency? From what many comments on this video are telling me, one huge mark they also missed is how Beckys play a huge roll in propagating cultural appropriation and are sure enough nowhere to be found when the very same people of color whose work they live for are being put down through the systemic racism they themselves benefit from. This video takes a look at Becky from the angle of a "basic white girl" approach in the second half, claiming for her to be a victim of misogyny, but from what others are pointing out, being basic has nothing to do with being a true Becky, it's complacency. I think referring to your real world example of Emmet Till's accuser is a better example of the dangers of a Becky if she doesn't change her ways. White women are responsible for checking ourselves.

@@DP-mn3bk It's more so that white people/ whiteness is to be believed, upheld and preserved at the expense/ bodily harm of BIPOC/ marginalized people. That's the other messaging we see in the story of the Exonerated 5/ When They see us. About the mention of the couple being outstandingly violent, I understand what you're saying, but honestly, every person has the capacity for evil or goodness regardless of upbringing or experience. It's a choice no matter your world or worldview. Another the real danger of a Becky is that her naivete and goodness is presumed regardless of her malintent or potential for viciousness. Ignorance doesn't mean stupid just like abusive past doesn't equate to a callous personality. It's how we choose to deal. She made a horrible choice. Just like you mentioned about microaggressions, we all are capable at some level of doing harm. At one point, to be outwardly racist (and still in plenty of places in the USA and in other countries) is a normal thing that normal people do and being microaggressive and coded or systemic in the form/ shape racism takes is a normal thing that plenty of normal people do. First of foremost, I love this channel. However, I'm going to be critical with this one. When it was stated that you should look for a Becky's good heart and whether a Becky can be redeemed, I am deeply sceptical about this since I have a family member who has been burned by a Becky and, until this day, still hasn't owned up to it nor apologised to my family member. Not only that, it is not a POC's job to look for a Becky's good heart nor give them the criticism to help them go in the right direction, particularly when POCs must prioritise on survival. For this video to say that, it shows that: 1. You have completely underestimated the harm a Becky can do; 2. Infantilise and coddle a grown woman who can make her own decisions and ability to educate herself and 2. Placed the onus of educating a Becky on POCs, which has created an extra burden on us when we must first survive. Furthermore, the reason why POCs will not look for their so-called "good hearts" is because we have given them ample of opportunities and criticisms until we scream ourselves hoarse and yet, those Beckies still do not listen nor own their mistakes hence, the reasons why I'm sceptical about a Becky's redemption or "good heart". So, to reiterate, I really do love this channel. But, this is a video that I'm afraid I would have a less favourable opinion of due to its tone-deaf comment.

I totally knew lots of Becky's growing up. It always went like this She was popular I was scared of her , was mean to her because I percieved her as empty headed Then I found she was a good friend Loved her No Becky was mean to me although all were basic

The point is to make money from views and activity in the comment section. No, they understood perfectly mate. You're naive.

@@theconsumerdrone8281 Apparently I can’t leave constructive criticism on the video of a channel I like? Not hating, just simply stating a fact. They get a lot of stuff right but this time they didn’t. Not every video is gonna be a winner. I’m not naive for pointing that out. Go find someplace else to be an ass.
