In the early 80's, Jordan and Unesco expelled the humble people of the B'doul tribe from the ancient city of Petra to declare it as a world heritage site.
While hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to the site, the local community seeks to rebuild their life on the tiny territory allocated for them.
This documentary film is a journey to the heart of the B'doul tribe of Petra. It is also an approach intended to be lucid about the inscription to the world heritage of one the most visited and sought-after destinations on earth.
Documentary: Petra: The Hidden Side of World Heritage
Directed by: Marie-Claire Thouault
Production: Plan Large Production & Aligal Production

Thank you for shining a light on this beautiful people and their plight. Greed will leave humanity without living culture or heritage.

So many country's do this to the native people, it's a shame they are forced out of the lands that is their heritage for the sake of tourists who can be so disrespectful of historical monuments and so much more

As a tourist, I'd love to see & interact with the Bedouin's & learn about their culture, their craft, hear their stories (hear them sing!) while they live on their land; more so than seeing uninhabited heritage sites themselves - I can't believe this is not done; I'd also be keen to see tourism regulated & happy to wait till it's my turn. Great doco.

I started watching this because I was on "Auto Play", and it was on next. I am so glad that it was! These people and this place, Petra is a part of them, and they are magnificent! We should all aspire to such lofty thought and depth of soul. I am inspired to do something about their plight. When I think of the land that I now live on, (I live about 2 miles from the American River and about 20 or so miles from Sacramento, the Capitol of California), I know that not so long ago, there was a people that had lived on it for many, many hundreds of years. They were "born here" and I feel they would have wished to also die here in this land. I wasn't there for the massacres and the broken treaties, some of which the American government is still breaking. But I am here for this, and I know this is no big thing, but..... I wish that I could find the address of the man that sat there with the Sheikh and his family. Sat by the fire and shared a meal with them all. Ate his food, drank his tea, and apparently either broke his word later or lied to the Sheikh's face when he promised him land and homes, and land, even a specified amount he told him, land for his and his Wife's children. Because if I did have his address, I would start a letter writing campaign.... I'm wondering, would you join me?

No use to be proud as a Jordanian bur your government chase out the Bedouins without giving them anything..that's not the way Islam taught the government to govern their peoples/subjects. Tell your government don't behave like the Zionist Jews.

I absolutely don't understand it entirely. We go to great lengths to preserve historical sites, but we seem to ignore the fact that we're displacing tribes without providing them suitable alternatives and support for survival. Petra is undeniably a remarkable historical site, but wouldn't it be even more appealing if the original inhabitants, who constructed these incredible structures, were allowed to reside there as they did in the past? Instead, they are driven out while others profit from the tourism industry without compensating the very people responsible for these architectural marvels. It's truly a load of nonsense. Politics, what a filthy game they play.

I am happy I watched this but it definitely upset me for the Bedouins. More attention needs to be brought to this injustice! I don't care what government it is they are all the same make promises lie and then act oblivious!!!

I'd love the chance to visit Petra and meet the Bedouin people and experience their way of life firsthand. Their homes in particular are a huge feat of architecture, I wonder how they built them 🤔

30 years ago? Isn’t that around the time that “Raiders of the Lost Ark” was made? Could it be that, that movie brought attention to this beautiful place? I don’t understand why the Bedouin wouldn’t be part of the history. So sad. Very unfair and short sighted. These people and their way of life should be as much protected as a building. 😢

The government obviously. They control the land and do as they wish, it’s the same world over Indigenous or settlers who have lived in the places for thousands down to hundreds of years those peoples are abused and their lands taken from them in every country in the world.

Sad how people are thrown out of their homes and the traditional way of life destroyed after 1000's of years, just so other people can make money and profit from their culture

Petra is an ancient city thousand years ago and should be protected, No one has preserved his origins for thousands of years. Peoples and people have passed through Petra. With all due respect, these Bedouins are still working in the archaeological site, and I have friends among them. They earn a lot of money in exchange for working with tourists.

Jordan is Palestine. These beautiful Bedu people don't "own" land. They are born there but have no proof of ownership as most countries demand.

Governments always claim to make things better. In reality they make everything worse. This is sad to watch. The Bedouin people are beautiful, and they should be respected. That site will be ruined because of greed.

UNESCO should include the natives when they roll out their plans initially. Sadly poorly executed. There is still time to make things right.for the heritage sites. First start by fixing solar panels for the place and drill water wells. Hopefully this video will bring forth awareness to the local government and global communities.😢

It is a bit ridiculous to contend that the Bedouins were in the region from times long ago when they did not live there until much later. Who knows who was there in very ancient times, but we do know of the Moabites. They were eventually assimilated into other Semitic groups. Later came the Nabateans, who built the city as we can see it now or at least to some extent. They eventually were over run by other peoples. We could say that the Bedouins who came from Arabia filled up the space when it seemed that none wanted it. Now Jordan (which itself is a totally made up country - the name is old, but that is about it) think they own it much like Turkey (another made up country) thinks it owns the Greek temples in Asia Minor. The UN being a bunch of useless highly paid busy buddies have to get involved as if they alone could save the world and of course, they make a mess of things. What can one expect from such an organization now totally corrupted with selfish woke ideology. I feel sorry for the Bedouins, but in the modern world you need titles or at least leases. This is the sad reality of modern life.
