The BeeGees have been around for so long everyone always knew they were brothers. It never occurred to me to tell anybody. The funny part is that Barry, the oldest, and their youngest brother Andy looked the most alike but it was Maurice and Robin who were twins. It's so sad that Barry is the only one left. 😔
There were some photographs where Maurice and Robin did look very much alike particularly those where Robin had a beard and their hair was more equal. They were fraternal twins never identical but they were not as unalike as people seem to remember either.
This was pre-disco Bee Gees. Other songs of this era: Holiday, New York Mining Disaster 1941, Massachusetts, To Love Somebody, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, I've Gotta Get a Message To You, Lonely Days, Run To Me, Words. Impossible to pick a favorite, but in my mind, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart sticks out. I love them all.
I could relate to this song the first time I heard it on the radio which was when it first came out. I was the black sheep in my family of origin and experienced the very things Robin talked about... except I'm still here so far. Robin was always my favorite Bee Gee. Thanks for your reaction, India. I can't believe that you didn't know they were brothers. lol The things we take for granted when we talk with someone. Take care and be well. Peace.
I recently read that they played I Started a Joke at Robin's funeral. Then at the end of the song Robin's son said something like "No, Dad the jokes not on you." That brought me to tears.
Robin was the most gifted of the Bee Gees, he passed away from cancer a few years ago. He was seen around Miami all the time & was a very friendly guy....loved when fans stopped to chat with him. This is one of my favorite Bee Gees songs
Andy was never a part of the Bee Gees. Yes, he was their brother, but Andy was just a baby when the 3 older brothers formed the act, The Bee Gees. Andy, did however get help from his older siblings when he got into the music industry as a solo artist. They helped him out with back up vocals, and song writing.
It evolved to that, but did not originate as such. Though it is widely believed that the Bee Gees first got their name from being the Brothers Gibb, this meaning did not come until a few years after their founding. When the brothers moved to Australia in 1958, they began playing on the radio with friends Bill Goode and Bill Gates. The groups name was originally The BG’s - contrived from the common initials between Barry Gibb, Bill Goode, and Bill Gates. The name then evolved from The BG’s to the Bee Gees which eventually came to mean the Brothers Gibb!
@@atticussampson776 Bill Goode was a speedway promoter who gave them their first break singing during intervals at a local speedway track in Redcliffe near Brisbane Australia in 1960 and Bill Gates was a radio DJ who gave them their first airplay on radio. It was Bill Gates who came up with the name BGs as you say Atticus from their common initials later changing to Bee Gees. The twins were 10 years old and Barry 13 or 14.
I love the pre-disco Bee Gees from the 1960s. Those songs were often beautiful melodies that belied the melancholy themes in the lyrics, such songs about people trapped in mines or someone about to be executed or someone starting a joke that starts the world crying. It was all amazing stuff.
India this song was to be interpreted by whoever listened to it. Basically however you want it to mean then that is what it means to you. It idnt have an actual meaning. If it i then Robin Gibb didnt tell anyone But heres what his son said about it. Robin Gibb's son played this song just after his father died from kidney failure on May 20, 2012. Robin-John Gibb told The Sun: "When he passed away we went out, they took the equipment away and we came back in. I picked up my phone and found 'I Started A Joke' on RU-vid and played it. I put the phone on his chest and that was the first time I broke down. I knew that song and its lyrics were perfect for that moment. That song will always have new meaning to me now.
@@johnholzhey8149 This is the version I think she should have used. I remember the night like it was yesterday. It was broadcast live on the A&E network. Spellbinding version. I love that standing ovation at the end: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nq0Yta6qpGU.html
So glad you found The Bee Gees India! They are so fabulous, you love their various and perfectly aligned voices. I’m 68, grandmother, loved them then, love them now. Robin was special, they all were but robin had a softness that’s you HAVE to listen, anyway, so glad you found them, stick with them girl.....here with you listening as I love your personality, so keep up the good work, you are entertaining as well as the artists🤗🌷
You are so honest and genuine! Love your reactions. I echo another comment here....go down this rabbit hole of the Bee Gees (no and!) catalog and you won't want to come out! And....Maurice pronounced his name Morris. 🙂
I've never understood what this song is about, but I've always loved it. Not a good song to listen to when you're feeling down. And Robin's voice is amazing. RIP Maurice, Robin, and Andy.
My first time hearing them was in the early 1970s on "The Midnight Special" I heard ( and fell in love with...) " Nights on Broadway " and " Run to Me" All before disco when they exploded!! Plus, as a pre-teen I was in love with their little brother, Andy Gibb. I got to see him in concert 💜💜 So tragic when he died
I always took the song to be, that he fell in love with a woman who was playing around behind his back...and everyone but him knew about it. Then when he did find out...he realized people had been laughing at him all along... no one was a true friend and it killed him inside to realize that. His whole world fell in. That was my take on the song.
@@StormyPeak I very much doubt that the song involves a woman at all. The song is not about something that was done to him, it is about something he caused. In the first stanza, he says: "I started a joke, which started the whole world crying." He is taking responsibility for something he said or did, which had negative consequences for others. Do you agree so far? "But I didn't see that the joke was on me." It is still his joke, he didn't foresee the consequences, that his joke would hurt so many people. "I started to cry, which started the whole world laughing." He is confused and hurt that his joke was not received the way he thought it would be. The joke is now on him. "I looked at the sky, rubbing my hands over my eyes. And I fell out of bed, hurting my head, from things that I said." He struggled to understand the hurt that he had caused, that it was his fault. "I finally died, which started the whole world living." He reaches understanding that what he said or did was wrong. He has accepted that he must change. And life starts again.
@Squirmin Herman the one eyed German IT was no drug overdose and i cant stand when THEY say his death was from COCAINE! If that was the case there would and still would be so many millions of deaths!!!!
The brothers Gibb, and 2 of them are twins! Yep. Barry is the oldest and he's the only one still alive. Younger brother Andy died before all of them. They are/were all very talented.
There's no AND in Bee Gees, it's just the Bee Gees. Absolutely loved Robins tremolo voice. He, along with his brothers, Maurice (pronounced Morris) and younger brother Andy, are truly missed.
The Bee Gees are probably my favorite singers of all time. They were not only incredible singers, but they wrote some of the most profound and beautiful music of the 20th Century. MEGA talented. (By the way...it doesn't make you illiterate because you didn't know how to pronounce their name. The only reason WE did is because we heard it constantly on the radio and TV. Don't be so hard on yourself, child.) They also had a younger brother, Andy (who was practically a carbon copy of Barry, and sounded like him, too), who died young, due to drugs. Now, all of them are gone, except for Barry. He still does some touring, I think, and produces music. I'm including a link, here, that you might enjoy seeing. You don't have to react to it; it's just a REALLY old video of them in 1960. Barry looks to be about 13 or 14, and the twins about 9-10. Just children. The one you reacted to, here, would be done 8 years later. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yNGsJZlvfro.html
Hands down one of my favorite of any of their songs. Robin was the favorite brother for me and my sister both. I always loved his voice. Pretty much any song that featured him on lead vocals will always be a hit with me. It's Bee Gees...no "and"....
As a little kid listening to it I actually cried, I felt humongous sadness, only understood the first part as a kid, English was not my first or second language, now over 30 years later, I still fell sadness, but different, deeper but not as intense
Lyrically, the song is about a man who says something very unkind and offensive even though it was intended to be a joke, making the world cry. Upset, the man begins to cry too, but he is laughed at, causing him to feel deep guilt and shame for his actions. The man’s remorse is remembered after his death, inspiring the world to learn from his mistake and achieve love and unity instead of seeking to hurt others.
I used to go too far with the jokes, and when it came back to bite me, others took joy in my comeuppance. I'd heard this song since I was little, but after experiencing life a little, it definitely hit differently.
Love these old Bee Gees songs.Hope you're enjoying it. From Wiki on meaning: Robin Gibb told The Mail on Sunday on 1 November 2009 about "I Started a Joke": "This is a very spiritual song. The listeners have to interpret it themselves, trying to explain it would detract from the song".
Definitely one of Robin Gibb's most well-known vocals. Another one he really shines on is "Don't Fall In Love With Me" from their 1981 album "Living Eyes".
In case we didnt tell you lol! Remember the reaction you did to "Shadow Dancing" that you ENJOYED so much? lol! Well, that was ANDY GIBB, the baby brother of the Bee Gees! Barry was 1946, twins 1949. Andy 1958. The twins are fraternal obviously. Barry is the only one left. He still records but now with his sons. Barry has been married to his wife Linda for 50 years in Sept. They wrote all thier own songs but none of them could read music! lol! Barry has written and performed for other artists like Barbara Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Samantha Sang, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, Frankie Vallee, Celine Dion to name a few. In this video Barry is 22, and the twins are 19.
We had parties at my house, and had the neighborhood come and bring records to play on the record player. There were a couple of girls that i would dance with to this song. We had alot of parties back in 67 to 74 before everyone moved on with their lives . It was truly great times with great music.🎶🎶🎶🎸🥁🎶🎶👍😎😁🎉🎉
Something most people don't know is that, being from England, their first recording was played on radios over there, but not often enough for people to hear it. So they borrowed money from family and friends and bought as many of their own records so it would get higher on the charts. It worked. The radio stations played their song and it jumped up the charts. I am sorry I don't know the song. I got this from an old radio show host Kasey Kasim, many years ago.
I was 14 years old when this song came out and the only way to quote this song is to play it or to have the lyrics in hand to order to do so. It’s a beautiful song, totally impressionistic by The Bee Gees. 💗🥰✌️
Fantastic, India! ❤️👏🏻 Wish I wasn't sick when it was released! My dad loved this and "Massachusetts". Others have mentioned wonderful songs~ but I hope a "newer" song from them will be seen at some point! It's called *This Is Where I Came In,* released 2001, about a year before Maurice passed. 😢💔 It's actually one of my favourites! They also wrote & recorded *Woman In Love* with Barbra Streisand (not my favourite artist, lol, but I do love the song!) which is just gorgeous & I think you'd love! 😊❤️
I agree with you. I think it is about the death of the ego. The last line, I finally died, which started the whole world living.. is like well yeah, your ego is smothering all of us.
@@brotherjim4875 I honestly don't try to figure out the "definitive" meaning in most lyrics. I understand that the lyricist is inspired by their experiences so I suppose they have the last word. Sure I generally know what a song is about but I have my own ideas.
Definitely impressionistic. I heard this growing up. My parents were big fans. I always loved it. I interpreted it to mean the story of someone who was rather introverted and alienated. They say something to the person they love, who doesn't return their love and it sets them into a tailspin of despair and suicide. I know it was probably the interpretation of my own introverted teenage self. But it helped me process my own feelings at the time and feel less alone. I still feel the sad vibe of this song. Great songs and art are always open for interpretation.
They were born in England and moved to Australia when they were young. Their first performances were up the road from me (a bit before I was around though).
Technically they weren't born in England, they were born on the Isle of Man, which is not part of England or the UK for that matter. It's a bit complicated I know but the IoM is a British Crown Dependency and has its own parliament and government. They were born to an English couple from Manchester and spent time in that city before their family emigrated to Australia. Andy, their brother, was English born. I guess you can call them British.
I remember reading somewhere when I was young at 13 when the song came out that it was about somebody who said or did something wrong towards a lot of people. Resulting in them hating him or being mad at him. Bee Gees songs are just as good today as they were yesterday
Robin said at one time "I felt I was the black sheep in the flock". I think he felt insecure in some ways in spite of his stunning voice, because he felt overshadowed by his big brother.
Yes they are brothers and they wrote all their own music. They started as children, they were originally from England then moved to Australia where they preformed their own songs on TV. Robin's unusual voice lends it self to sad songs.
Robyn is my favorite Bee Gee and this is my favorite track! Thank you! You should Check out videos from their ONE NIGHT ONLY concert. It was one of their last performing all together. Try the song "Our Love (Don't throw It All Away)... they do a tribute to their brother Andy who committed suicide.
Robin Gibb was a survivor of a very horrific train crash, which traumatized him so much that he got a very distinct sob and quiver in his voice, which is VERY evident in this song and others he sang lead on. As for him and Maurice being twins. Look at this picture, which shows the both of them throughout the years. i.pinimg.com/originals/55/4b/0c/554b0c920e2667019520ffe8e707f229.png Yes, their hairstyles differ but they DO have the same facial features.
Yes, Hither Green accident 1967. Robin and his girlfriend were only slightly injured, but they were told that if they'd be just a few seats further forward, they'd have been decapitated. 49 people died in that accident, mainly due to a broken rail.
Bee Gees stand for Brothers Gibb. They have been singing together since the twins were 6 or 7 and Barry was 9 or 10. In Australia they supported their family singing in clubs.
Love your show, I'm 68 years old, this is the best rendition of "ave maria" by andre Rieau and mirusia,, like an angel singing it, your reaction please, your tears will fall!
Yes they're brothers. The Gibbs and they had a younger brother who had a solo career, but sadly took his own life before 30, I think. Andy Gibb. This is the best song to showcase Robin's voice! I always thought of a man who was bullied and never understood the world around him. Used to make me cry. They all had amazing voices and it's sad to think only Barry is left. Enjoy your channel. Peace from Alberta Canada!
