Makes you wonder who was looking at old Bee Movie memes and thought, “Hmm, I’d like to see what those lines would sound like if they were said by Jason Statham.”

This honestly sounds like it could be a Steven Seagal movie plot.

Statham is a rare 'old school action star' who can still get lead roles in theatrically released films [helped by being part of the 'Fast & Furious' series] while most are restricted to VOD fare. Even in his lesser vehicles he's always a charismatic presence and I really enjoy it when he can show other sides to him [like his hilarious turn in 'Spy']. I do wonder if he was only available for a limited time on this film-hence why he is absent for stretches.

What you're saying about the exposition through the investigators, could it be that the writers were trying to cram in 'Boondock Saints' as well?

Also, re: 'Seagal Speeches'...my favorite (and I think the possibly least effective) is in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

I want to say Wimmer peaked with Equilibrium, but Law Abiding Citizen is by far the best movie with his name attached. but even with this caveat, Wimmer peaked with Equilibrium.

Wimmer and Ayer and Statham. To be fair, it probably shouldn't have worked the way it did. But then I remembered that wimmer and ayer were Writer/Director together in Street Kings. So, it can be pulled off. Then I remembered that Street Kings was also written by Ayer fresh after Training Day, so.... thanks for the help?

He does set someone on fire using honey as a fuel. All he needs is a doctor’s outfit, a bee on his head and a grassy knoll to stand on and we’d have a DR. BEES movie. I wonder if Harry Partridge knows? “What’s this? A bunch of high tech hooligans cheating elderly people out of their money whilst secretly working for the son of the president? Perhaps an inordinate amount of bees will remedy the situation.”

The Beekeeper is part of a weird trend of American-set films being made in Britain. There was Morbius, Love Again and The Flash and The Beekeeper joins them.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja 3 месяца назад
The UK offers big tax breaks to film here so it's much cheaper [backed by a strong local film industry] hence why many 'event' movies [like Mission Impossible 5+6 and Spiderman: Far From Home] detour to London for a stretch!

The best way I can describe Beekeeper is if they took the script of John Wick but tried to make it into a Guy Ritchie film.

1:02 Just before 'Fury' Ayer directed and co-wrote 'Sabotage' [with Skip Woods of Die Hard 5 fame] which I found a slog to sit through [mostly due to the confused narrative and unpleasant characters]. 1:15 Wimmer did write Angelina Jolie's 'Salt' in 2010 which got mixed to positive reviews [a sequel was mooted but never materialised]. He also had a writing credit on the recent 'Expendables 4' [possibly due to his work with Statham in this film] while Statham and Ayer will be re-teaming on 'Levon's Trade' [with Stallone writing the script].

To be honest I never really took this movie seriously. This movie was so silly that I was having fun with it. Yes this movie takes inspiration from many much better action movies like you mentioned the Equalizer and John wick. But the fact they turned this random ass beekeeper into a badass unstoppable killing machine was so funny that I was just having a fun time watching him go on a rampage. I wanna see more of these silly action movies like the fishermen or the farmer.

Also, comparing a hitman revenge movie to John Wick is irrelevant. John Wick is a very unoriginal movie and did not create anything new really.
@FilmBrain
@FilmBrain 6 месяцев назад
John Wick might not be original, but it has become a clear template, from plot beats, it's sense of world building and mythology, to visual style and aesthetics. It has clearly been influential on the genre, and it is very obvious here.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja 6 месяцев назад
@@FilmBrain I'd also add it helped move the action genre away from 'shaky cam' /rapid editing [thankfully!].

I saw this on Wednesday. I'll damn it with faint praise by saying that it's better than both of Statham's films last year. I'm trying to figure out exactly where this went wrong, and i think I've figured it out. There are basically three ways a pure action film can work. 1. It's entirely style over substance. There's just enough hook to get the audience invested, then all the work goes into the stunts and choreography. Think John Wick (especially 2-4). 2. A solid story where the action is solid and serves the story. Think Die Hard. 3. The "it's just for fun" variety where nobody is taking anything seriously, and the entire point is to watch the good guys beat up the bad guys. Think The Expendables (not 4). There can be some overlap, but I'd say that's the general breakdown. John Wick 1 is probably the best example of 1 &3 overlapping. Here, I think Ayer was trying to overlap 2&3, and it just didn't work. I think we were supposed to take the active Beekeeper & guy who killed a Beekeeper seriously, but both are ridiculous and are introduced with very sloppy and short setup before being quickly dispatched. It takes itself too seriously to be fun, wnd the premise is too stupid for the audience to take seriously. I chuckled a few times at some of Statham's lines, but mostly i just felt disappointed.

Given the first John Wick and Equalizer are 10 years old this year, this does feel a bit late to the party, especially as those series now boast 7 films between them.

I love that people still shit on Suicide Squad as if that's Ayer's fault as most of his shattered movies were made that way through re editing. See Sabotage where it was originally a 3 hour mystery thriller re-edited into a 1 hour 49 minute action film. If anything, Hollywood and shit producers are to blame.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja 6 месяцев назад
Personally my main issue with Sabotage were the really unlikeable main characters which I presume would still be an issue in the longer cut. His films post Suicide Squad [Bright, The Tax Collector] weren't well received either.

@@jamesatkinsonja I feel that with the longer cut they would have at least given the characters more screentime and backstory, but they never personally bothered me.
