They actually do "swallow" them. You basically need to train yourself to get rid of your gag reflex, and, ironically enough, avoid swallowing as it could lead to serious damage (look up "sword swallowing" on wikipedia). It's not an illusion, so much as just a very impressive (and dangerous) performance.

Haha same. As a kid I assumed it was all fake then people started doing craY shit so I became convinced some of it was real somehow...now I'm back to where I was as a kid
