"The Beetle" was a small AEC railmotor that ran between Fawkner and Somerton in suburban Melbourne up until the 1950's. Some historical scenes were recreated from old photos on the tramway, as well as the Beetle itself to film some footage for Martin Bennet's Upfield line video. Here we have a look at some of those scenes and the process for creating them.
The book shown in this video is Victorian Railways Railmotors: A photographic profile
Edited by Neville W Gee and John Sargent, Train Hobby Publications.

Hello from the UK, 'The Beetle' is fantastic, you have done a fantastic job creating that, and the places it worked between, I am really impressed. Kudos to the track inspector chuck, who was sporting the same colours as the Beetle in her plumage 😁😆 Great Video

Great little video! I didn't see any giant 🐔 chickens when I travelled through Cambelfield and Somerton last weekend! 😂 Lucky that! Seeing as you have a 3D printer, you now have the capability of producing your own Victorian Railways workers and fortunate Victorians willing to travel on the Tait's or the Railmotors. My cousins used to travel to school from Mornington on the next generation of Railmotor painted in V.R. blue. This was in the 70s and early 80s. They often commented on how rough the ride was, especially when they were nearing Mornington and naughty boys would put rocks or stones on the track for fun. I suspect that this would have been roughly where Bunnings Mornington is now. I can just remember riding on the Tait red rattlers to the city from Heidelberg. Then the blue Harris trains and finally the stainless steel trains starting with the Hitachis. I also used to catch the long green and cream two single doors AEC buses from Bulleen to Kew or the city. That was '77 to '80 and then we finally got the orange Volvo buses. By then the long orange Leyland buses on other routes were already beginning to look shabby. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺

Superb modelling and a fascinating historical prototype. I’m an oldie who spent most of my engineering life pre the computer age so I’ve not got into 3D printing. I must admit that it can be very useful…in the right hands. Always good to see your videos. Thank you.

Great modelling and scaled landscaping. As a child growing up along the Mansfield branchline l recall the Walker railmotor being referred to as the Beetle . This made perfect visual sense to me after observing Harlequin beetles in connected rear-end pairs and applying the Beetle name to a twin carriage Walker . . perhaps l was the only one to call it by that name ! Would like to hear how your railmotor came by that same name . Once again, great modelling - l watched the footage of the Whittlesea line you refer to only a week ago and l honestly did not recognise any model footage - great camera work too.

"The Beetle" was a contemporary name for the Fawkner-Somerton railmotor. The video this was made for was about the Upfield line, not Whittlesea, check out the link in the description. The Whittlesea line was similar in having a railmotor service that met the electric train at the edge of the suburbs, but would have used Walker railmotors and DERM's towards the final years of operation. Here's a newspaper clipping from 1955 referring to the Beetle: www.victorianrailways.net/motive%20power/aec/beetle_last%20run.jpg

Yes, I did read about the "Spark" pulling over the tree for firewood, and it did land across the tracks as shown. (Lloyd Holmes) Your Tait has a very advanced form of coupling but otherwise a great video.
@melbournesparks3828

It has automatic couplings because the curves are too tight for the normal buffer and chain couplings at the moment.

Amazing work on making all this happen! To think that the Beetle was completed completely by computer is amazing! Any recommendations for a printer that can be used for O-gauge?
@melbournesparks3828
@melbournesparks3828 2 месяца назад
Thanks it's certainly an easy and effective way to make things you probably wouldn't otherwise. What kind of printer works for you depends on a lot of things, like budget, construction method, level of detail etc. The Beetle was made on a very old Wanhao I3 clone, which is about the most basic you can get. You could probably find a second hand one for next to nothing. For HO scale at least a lot of people use resin printers as opposed to filament deposition like mine, which give more detail on smaller parts but from my understanding are slower and more complicated to run.

You could fit a sound module to simulate the diesel engine.
@markfryer9880
@markfryer9880 3 месяца назад
Going on the Victorian Railways Railmotor link in the description I can see only mention of gasoline and due to shortages during WWII many of the Railmotors were converted to run on wood gas. Naturally post war once rationing ended the engines would have been converted back to running on gasoline or petrol as we refer to it here in Australia. Given that they ran for 25 or so years, I don't see Victorian Railways spending money on converting them to diesel engines at any point. Mark from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
