Ben, what if I don´t have any luggage but just my hand luggage. Do I need to get out the terminal and check in all over again? Or I can just move internally to the next gate and make the checkin for the next fligth inside connection flights area?

Yes, you can explore the airport. Although you may not be able to check your luggage for your next flight more than four hours before your departure time. Hi Ben, thanks for sharing. This past Monday, I had the worst experience with United Airlines. Btw I am a US passport holder. My original itinerary were as follows: Washington DC - Chicago with a layover of 5hrs. Chicago to Delhi with a layover of 17hrs. Both were operated by United Airlines. However, from Delhi to Kathmandu (final destination) it was operated by Vistara. I had one bag I was going to check in. When I went to check in for my flight Monday, they said they couldn't send my bag to my final destination and I would need to re-check my bag in Delhi. Now normally this wouldn't be a problem (usually when I go to Nepal, I go through Doha, Qatar) except that it's India and they require tourist visa to enter India. I would need to go through Indian customs to retrieve my bag. Not knowing this in advance and maybe it's my fault for assuming my bag would go to my final destination, I didn't have a visa. So I ended up rebooking my flight. Also, side note, I booked through United Airlines website, not through a third party organization. I was livid! Tell me, is it common knowledge that people should know this? What advice do you have for future bookings, checked luggage and connections? Is it on the passenger to know this specific detail or should the airline have warned me (or informed me after the fact) when I booked that I would need to recheck my bag in India? Btw, this is not my first time traveling internationally. I have been to at least 10 foreign countries by plane and had my bag go to my final destination. Thanks.
@BenDreamVacations
@BenDreamVacations 2 года назад
Hi Pramila, I am sorry that you had to experience that. For these type of flights you really do have to do some research to make sure you are not missing anything especially when it comes to visas. I did a quick search on Vistara's website and it states "All passengers arriving from an international destination should collect their bags and clear customs at the first entry point in the country. This applies even if the bags are through tagged till the final domestic destination. Passengers can recheck-in from transfer area check-in counters, post custom clearance." You would think United would warn you of this before you book your flights and not at the time of check-in but you can't rely on them to give you this information. What I do before I book international flights for a client is to check the visa requirements for each country they have a connecting flight in and for the final destination as well as check each airline's website to verify their baggage policy. If you do that you will avoid having the situation you just had. For next time, I would definitely avoid connecting in India if possible. I hope that helps you in some way.

Hello Sir, thank you for the very helpful and informative video. However, I have a question I hope you can help with. If I am travelling to the US on 2 connecting flights across different airlines with various baggage allowance regulations, which one do I follow? Does it mean I have to pay for my luggage on one flight but not the next or does the first airline baggage allowance rule apply to all flights until I reach my final destination? Thank you in advance!
@BenDreamVacations

You will have to follow the baggage allowance regulations for each airline. If you have connecting flights on different airlines and they do not have a partnership with each other then you are going to have to pick up your bags between flights and recheck them with the next airline and pay any applicable bag fees.

Your checked bags should be transferred all the way to Ho Chi Minh. Just double check your bag tags to make sure it reads SGN for Ho Chi Minh airport when you check your bags in with Delta in Phoenix. You won't need to worry about rechecking them in Incheon. You also won't need to pass through customs or immigration in Incheon but there is one security check you do need to go through for international transfers but it is very efficient. Safe travels!

Hello Ben and thank you for a very clear video. Next month I will fly from Milan Malpensa (MXP) to Montreal (YUL) and from there to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) with AirCanada for both flights, so I imagine my checked baggage will be moved for me and will arrive straight to Toronto. Originally I had booked flights with a layover in Montreal without changing the airplane, but few days ago AirCanada modified my itinerary and now I need to change plane when I land in Montreal and I have only 1h or so to do that. Considering that I will need to go through customs and the flight from Milan might be delayed, I am worried I won't have enough time to do that. What's your thought on this? I am getting news that flights are getting delayed basically everyday, both in Montreal and Toronto. Thank you in advance!

Hi Beatrice, an hour in my opinion is too short for an international connection. The customs lines at Toronto have been crazy lately so even if you don’t have a delay you might have a hard time making the connecting flight anyway. I would try and get a 3 hour connection if you are able to. That should be enough time to account for the long customs lines and and delays that you might encounter.

From what I gather from your video, it seems like I’ll have to exit the secured area and check in again as I would normally do in the initial airport, but my agency told me that I absolutely mustn’t do that. As long as your tickets were booked together your bags should get transferred over to the next plane for you. Here is the process you will need to follow. Once you arrive at terminal 2 in Mumbai you will go through immigration and customs then afterwards you can proceed towards the transfer facility. The airport staff can help guide you through the process and answer any questions that you have. You won't need to check in again or collect your checked luggage unless you have separate tickets for your domestic and international flights. After reaching the transfer facility, you'll need to go through a security check. You must undergo pre-embarkation security checks before proceeding to the domestic departure area. To get to terminal 1 you can take a free shuttle to get there. Once you arrive in terminal 1 you can go to straight to the gate, just ensure that you have your boarding pass and necessary identification documents readily available to expedite the process.

If all your flights were booked on one ticket then you your bags should be checked all the way through each way. I am assuming you are from the Netherlands which is part of the EEC. This will allow you to skip having to go through passport control in Athens. I’m scared because I only have 35mins in between and will probably be last to get off my plane

@BenDreamVacations Месяц назад
Hopefully the gate of your connecting flight is close and you arrive a little early. 35 minutes is a very tight connection. If your first flight happens to get delayed even a little bit talk to the gate agent and have them rebook your connecting flight to a later flight.

Actually after i land my first flight , what is the process to climb second flight tell me step by step
@BenDreamVacations
@BenDreamVacations 2 года назад
After you have landed and gotten off your first flight look for a departures display board and look for the airline and flight number to find where the gate of your next flight is located. You can also look this up on your phone by going to the airline's website and click on flight status. Type in your flight number and it will tell you the gate number of your next flight. Once you know the gate number look for signs leading you to where your gate is.

Hi i want to ask that can i book a connecting flight separately with two different airlines ? As i want to travel to dubai via flydubai and dubai to saudia via saudi airlines. So is it possible? And i have a layover for 8 hour's at dubai airport do i need a visa for layover at airport?
@BenDreamVacations
@BenDreamVacations Год назад
Yes, you can book flights on two different airlines. If you are checking bags you will have to collect them after the first flight and then recheck them with the second airline. You will also need to get a transit visa once in Dubai.

Yes, you will have to go through customs when arriving into Doha. Make sure your passport isn’t going to expire within 6 months of arriving into Qatar and you will also need a tourist visa to enter.

This is technically not true for JFK. I was told by Virgin that if you come into JFK from a domestic flight to connect to an international flight, you will have to claim your bags then recheck them through customs and security.
@BenDreamVacations
@BenDreamVacations 7 месяцев назад
That is only true if you booked two separate flights but even then you won't have to go through customs. At most you will have to leave security, recheck your bags with the next airline and then go back through security. Otherwise, if you booked your flights on a single ticket you won't need to recheck your bags or go through customs or security before boarding your international flight.
