The Beginning of the BEHEMOTH computerized recumbent bicycle - 1989

This 2-minute video aired on KNTV-11 in July 1989 and catches me in Silicon Valley immersed in the early development of the BEHEMOTH bicycle. Fortunately, the Winnebiko II version was still intact, so we get to see that console as well as a bit of on-the-road footage... along with my traveling partner Maggie. There are also shots of the fiberglass-over-cardboard trailer fabrication, a short interview, glimpses of my OSCAR-13 amateur radio satellite obsession, and a cameo by Venus the cat. Within a few months, the console shown here would be gathering dust as I built the new one featuring a Macintosh Portable.- with a SPARCstation behind the seat, heads-up display and head mouse, satellite email, and a ham shack at the stern.
Much more the three bike versions from 1983-1991 may be found here: microship.com/...
I digitized this from the U-matic source tape, which is a rare treat... usually media from this era is on VHS and nowhere near as sharp.
A third of a century later, I have a business digitizing ancient media, with a geeky mobile lab in the San Juan Islands.

Your interview on the Phil Donahue Show was fascinating. You were so far ahead of your time as a freelancer and mobile technologist. Most don't realize how much of your tech then fits into a pock or small back today.

Thank you! I am constantly astounded by the tech in my pocket... chatting with AI... live tracking... 180 TB of NAS... it is just surreal, in one lifetime. A BEHEMOTH of today would not be a behemoth!

I have distinct memories of you staying at my house when I was a kid during your bike trip. We lived just outside of Richmond, VA. My dad (Jim) was heavily involved in technology and ham radio at the time, but I’m not actually sure how you met. This brought back so many great memories. Thanks for uploading this!

Mom Ann? Good memories of geeky visits there, if I'm thinking of the same person! I think there were two Jim hosts in the Richmond area, so might have the wrong one... in any case, thank you!

Yes, my mom is Ann! If I’m not mistaken, you taught me a technique for shooting rubber bands that I still use to impress my kids to this day!

Every now and then I'll go back and re-read some of your articles from back in the day. It's stunning how far the world has come in that time, technologically. I wouldn't argue that civilization has improved overall, though. Thanks for continuing to share!

Thanks! It is indeed amazing how utterly transformative the tech changes have been, completely inverting the culture. From a time when "long distance" was a major factor to a time when anyone in the world can interact in real time with anyone else.... while walking around... and for free. Not to mention the other things these pocket supercomputers can do. Even as a paleogeek, I would have seen the future average personal "phone" as utterly fanciful science fiction from an impossibly distant future, not something that would be taken for granted in my own lifetime. Love it.

Always happy to see anything BEHEMOTH/Winniebikeo related as that's how I first heard about you and your adventures. I was an avid Bicycling America reader and saw the article they did with you. A lot of your media appearances I never saw being in Australia. So it was that article and the Phil Donahue show that filled me in on the book writing, crazy bicycle riding guy from the other side of the world. I've lost count of the times I've been chatting to someone and I've drawn them over to the computer so I can pull up the bike or datawake.

Thank you so much! I love dusting off these relics from my salad days... and so glad I chased those dreams then rather than waiting until some vague future life of leisure. Watching them is like dropping into a deeply familiar dream world....

I stumbled on your blog when I was looking at using cardboard as a building material for fibreglass reinforcing. I wasn't inclined to build anything, but I was interested in seeing if someone had already thought of it. I also watched that talk at Novell a couple times. Incredible stories man!

Thank you! I have an ancient post about cardboard-core composites, if it's useful... got a ton of mileage out of those, though in later boat projects I switched to Divinycell... microship.com/cardboard-core-composites/

@@microship That is exactly the post I saw! I tried it myself on a small scale sample, actually! Not bad!

If he could rebuild the Behemoth recumbent these days. The computer system would be so small now. I remember when the Behemoth was featured in I think Bicycling Magazine. I went nuts over it. I now ride a two wheeled recumbent. But I do not have nearly the equipment on mine.
