The Wisdom of Odin is a vlog of my journey through Norse Paganism, a way to assist others along their journey, and a place to promote a positive image for all of paganism.
While I personally declare myself as a Norse Pagan, I speak on topics that also involve aspects of Asatru, Heathenry, and other pagan identities such as Slavic/Celtic/Germanic paganism.
All gatherings are set up and managed by The Fellowship of Northern Traditions, a non-proft religious organization. This channel/community is inclusive to all but is also non-political.

Exactly! Gold and silver have very low melting points, and they couldn’t just leave those religiously significant items to melt. 😂

The first recorded Viking raid on England took place in 789 at Portland in Dorset. Whilst not as bloodthirsty as many subsequent raids it was significant for the King’s local reeve, they killed him.

Hey, I’m 15 and my mom moved to the States from Bavaria, Germany. I’m new to Norse paganism. I’m going to give my first offerings soon to Baldr, Freyja, Idun, and of course, Odin. I feel I should follow Frigg as I appreciate her motherly demeanor. I am making separate alters outside. I’m lucky enough to have lush woods in my backyard! Your videos help so much! Thank you for the education! I hope the gods aren’t frustrated with me for waiting until after I’m done building my alters to make offerings.

The Pagan gods aren't like the Christian one. The Pagan Gods know your true heart and intentions. The Pagan Gods also know how hard this world can be and how it relentlessly assaults us with "difficulties" on literally a daily basis. All the Pagan Gods want or need, is acknowledgement that they DO exist and for their progeny (Us) to come back home. Nothing more. We aren't going to go to "Hel" (which to be honest isn't a terrible place like the Christian "Hell" is purported to be), just for not building an altar or saying their name out loud. The Pagan Gods are a lot like us, and this makes sense because if "we" were made in THEIR image, it totally fits because I could see them being our true fathers and mothers.

@@alfredharrison597 Yes, I’ve read into the stories on how Hel isn’t a bad place. Matter of fact, it’s the afterlife most individuals go to. Hel, she isn’t evil either…just a bit of a darker deity who isn’t usually followed, but instead simply respected “at a distance”. I’ve watched a few videos on her, or ones that had her in it. I was Christian before following the faith of my (likely) ancestors, but I’m lucky enough to have a very loosely Christian family. Also, to touch on you saying “going home” that’s my plan. I want to move back to Germany and often visit places like Iceland etc in the meantime. I think it’s good I found this faith, and it only makes we want to return to Bavaria even more!

The British pagans believed in reincarnation so you won't be staying anywhere , like a type of heaven. I'm very suspicious of any such implication that we may stay anywhere other than earth. This is your birth right, along with a piece of land you could sustain yourself on, and you don't have to petition any god to do that. If you are naughty you may reincarnate into a lower evolutionary form say something awful like a politician or a Christian. What I like about it is we aren't waiting for one fine day, when a god sorts everything out after we've destroyed everything with an apocalypse . The earth isn't a curse we are cast out into to toil the land. None of our gods want just 2 people in a retarded state of consciousness and without the ability to procreate. None of our gods are weak so cannot be slayed by the hand of man. We are not encouraged to be meek or weak and can defend ourselves. The meek have never inherited anything and this is, about control more than reality. Ultimately we are more responsible for the course of history and to take responsibility is the cornerstone of any spiritual life. Our ideas are not intrinsically antagonistic to others, as in monotheism, as we can contemplate the possibility of other lands and people having other ways and gods, simply because that's the way it actually is. And we are not compelled to re-educate or "save" them. There is no automatic guilt and we are not born in sin. Fear is not given any place to thrive. And we wouldn't create a society that bleats about righteousness but then lets our ancestors and elderly die from neglect and from being unable to heat themselves. So respect your mom and mow her lawn etc is way more true a sacrifice of time, energy and intent than any theatrical expressions of devotion. Be strong, you will live a better life.

The tip I'd give is that it wasn't the first time the Vikings raided and they had been raiding for a while. So the confusing part would be that people think that's the first time they came over there and raided, false.

One of the reasons for the success of Christianity in Britain was the charity offered to the needy, sick and poor of the community. Royalty converted first and then bequeathed and gifted land for churches, monasterys and abbeys. It wasn't purely a question of forced conversion, although that did occur ( especially under Theodosius and the Christian Roman Emperors). Emperor Julian, the last Hellenist Emperor, wrote about how Christians would help the poor and hungry, even pagans. He called for pagans to imitate the Christians. Christians were winning hearts and minds by their charity. I wonder what Christianity and Saxon and Norse heathenism could have learnt from each other if they had had an honest exchange of ideas, spirituality and culture?

It is said that the raid at Lindisfarne was a reaction of what took place in Verden. Sachsenhain is a monument for 4500 pagan saxons brutally murdered (religious genocide) on orders of Emperor Charlemagne (a "christian"). It was created in 1935 and consists of 4,500 stones commemorating each victim of the massacre. People say this is what kicked off the war between "the church" and Pagans. I think that would be really cool if it is true. However I highly doubt a slaughter in Lower Saxony, inspired raiders (what I would assume were Danes, but we don't actually know) hundreds of miles away to raid a specific place 11 years later

As heathens, we should at least try to see these raids in a clearer light. What does that mean? If Lindisfarne was the epitome of the subjugation of Britain under the Christian Empire, then raiding the monastery would have extreme symbolic significance. When take in the greater picture, we can see that the Roman Catholic Church conquered most of Europe, the indigenous people of Europe were forced to convert and forcibly put under this power structure. Then on the other side we can see the last free heathens of Europe, conducting counterattacks against the invasive Empire. Lindisfarne was retribution. The vikings weren't simply greedy raiders, they were freedom fighters. It is important that we insist on our perspective on history.
@elverkongen2515

That is some major revisionism dude. Especially considering they raided non-Christian places with just as much fervor.
@janosch1097

@elverkongen2515

@@janosch1097 Then provide your proof for why you believe the Lindisfarne attackers to be "freedom fighters" and not simply opportunistic raiders. Revisionism is great when actual new knowledge comes to light, but not when it's someone's baseless interpretations of events. The latter is simply NOT history.
@janosch1097
@janosch1097 2 года назад
@@elverkongen2515 You are presupposing that the Christian accounts are telling the truth. But where is the "proof" that they were just "opportunistic raiders"? There is, in fact, none. I would be more careful and not take the written word at face value, ever. Written history is, for the most part, completely malleable.
@elverkongen2515

@@alfredharrison597 It's not "Viking" because it's likely from the 15th century. I don't find that a bad thing, personally. There's a whole book of magikal icelandic staves like the vegvisir.
@janosch1097
@janosch1097 2 года назад
I wouldn't try to be so strict in classifying things. It is futile to even start to try. There are even people who try to strictly classify things into "pure heathen" and "not heathen" etc. If you start doing that, you will soon discover that there has been, and still is, a lot of cross-influence of cultures, religious components, ideas, and that trying to find "pure heathen" things from the past is pointless. I give you a hint: create and be, be heathen, make your own symbols, and don't listen to too much talk, rather listen to the wind in the leaves.

I have never claimed that the vegvisir on my arm is a viking tattoo. It is however a popular modern pagan symbol, regardless of its historical uses in the 14th-15th century. Still Icelandic, and still has to do with sorcery which was strictly forbidden in Iceland at that time
