Top Malinois trainer Michael Rogosin of Tactical K9 Family joins with Animal Watch to bring you a basic guide to training your working line Malinois puppy. His Belgian Malinois are trained to be equal in ability to army Malinois, but he does it simply for fun and to challenge them, as a Belgian Malinois NEEDS loads of exercise mentally and physically or they will be very unhappy, vocal and destructive.
His training is always positive and the most important thing is to make it fun for your dog.
We run through a few basics today:
FOOD LURING
SIT, LIE DOWN, STAND
STAY AND COME ON COMMAND
GO TO BASKET
FOOD CONTROL

Great video. I own a working line malinois and I do think that sometimes people exaggerate a bit with this breed. It's all about the mental stimulation. Physical exercise, just the needed to keep them healthy. My malinois does agility herding and tracking. She was taught as a puppy that she needs to have an off switch. Remember that if you introduce a dog like a malinois to 3 hours of exercise, she will eventualy demand 6 hours of exercise. What they really need is to get their brain to work. My working line malinois goes for a 1 hour walk, which doesn't tire her at all but trains for half an hour and then goes to sleep on the couch. They are not monsters, and if you know what you are doing and are willing to learn ways to challenge their minds, even first-time dog owners can own them.

I love your comment because it's so insightful. With this new fad with the Belgian Malinois it's absurd how people are overemphasizing the breed in every single way, whether it be power, strength, exercise, Etc. I love the Belgian Malinois It's a Wonderful breed. But a well-bred Malinois can settle down in the house so long as it has adequate training and exercise to do so. It's also funny how they are being hyped up as this monster dog that is more powerful than German Shepherd. It's absurd. The Malinois is a lovely dog and yes it is very agile but a purebred Malinois is not larger and more powerful than a working line German Shepherd. The knpv Malinois are a different story, but that's because they are MIXED with working line G. Shepherd, Dutch Shepherd, Great Dane, and Pit Bull. Thank you for your comment. Very astute

my Belgian malinois has to live with me in a semi truck sleeper berth, it's pretty small for this dog from what I understand. her other alternative is some kind of shelter or give her away 😩😨 I picked her up from a kill shelter.. so I don't know how many options she has left. I don't mind her company and don't need to get rid of her. But I would like to know, if anyone has any recommendations for me to help stimulate her mentally? we can't get very physical often, she loves playing fetch and brings the toy right back 😍 any opinions and exercises or techniques would be greatly appreciated. thank you

we have a rescued Mal and she is wonderful. I totally agree that you need to keep them mentally engaged with lots of agility, not just walks: We have turned our neighborhood into an obstacle course. It’s such a sight that the neighbors come out to watch as we go around running along brick walls, jumping over hedges. She ran a 10k with me and did great, hardly wore her out at all. I am in the best shape of my life😅

Definitely yes-it’s key to avoid repeating commands. After the dog starts to understand the command, if the dog is trying to figure it out you just have to be patient and not repeat the command over and over again. Otherwise they will just learn that the command is multiple repetitions or that it’s not really a command.

Well done on the new puppy! If he's going to be a large Malinois I'm guessing he's one of the knpv style Malinois that are usually mixed with Dutch Shepherd and working line German Shepherd. Even some other breeds to add size. I much prefer this style of Malinois. They may not be considered the purebred Malinois but I actually prefer them.

Training them to find lost cats would be pretty cool. I know he's in Germany but there is only one cat detection dog in all of the UK and has found nearly 100 lost cats, he could earn a pretty penny.

Omg, that's so funny you wrote that. I said a couple years ago I was going to train my dog to find other lost dogs(and inevitably that led to cats as well). What sparked my idea was - my dog took off and we had to search for her, she likes to visit neighbour's and people with food). Ya know it might be a viable business idea after all.......👍....maybe after her nap....lol

So I adopted what I was told was a GSD/Lab mix puppy. 2 breeds I have experience with. Turns out, she’s a Malinois mix. Didn’t take very long to recognize our precious, tiny 8 wk old girl as a classic Malingator. Instinctive “bite work” is prevalent early even in a rescue mix. As she grew, her physique revealed classic Malinois/Dutch Shepherd lines, in addition to breed specific behaviors. I’d been purposely avoiding this breed! Too often uneducated rescues confuse them w/GSDs. However, she got the family she needed. She’s my constant companion & loves her kitty brother & doggie sister (Border Collie/Lab). We worked & continue to work w/her. Don’t know if I could handle a full Malinois though! Mama loves her Little Bit! Can’t imagine life w/out my Malingator mix ❤️

The exact same thing happened to us. We adopted a 5 month old "shepherd" from the local SPCA. He had been brought in from Houston. But as he grew we saw something quite different. We had always had Akitas and thought a shepherd would be easier ( laughter here). He is a handful, is now 2 1/ 2 years old. Luckily we have 6 foot fences surrounding our home in a rural area. He has killed 3 huge groundhogs, carried them around. He's fast enough to catch squirrels and rabbits, anything. Now he's getting really over protective and we're probably going to get a trainer. This video is helpful.

My favorite breed, alas I'm crippled a bit now and wouldn't disrespect one by getting one. I've a friend that has a female but she is as big as a male and we both think she is an "Alpha" if that's possible! One day (before i broke my neck) she asked me to walk her. While she (the dawg) had been introduced and we had become great pals, I had no idea what a 70 lb. dog could do. I got a "lesson" I'll never forget. My friend had told me, "don't let her see a squirrel"" I said yeah, ok. But, she did and we were off to the races! I held on for dear life. Got to the tree where the poor squirrel was scrambling up. I swear that dog lifted me 3 feet of the ground. Once, she saw the squirrel was out of reach, she looked at me like it was my fault she didn't get him. We became friends for life after I walked her thru a Hardee's drive through window where I got her a bacon biscuit. She could smell it thru the bag. Anyway, I walked her a bit, then I knelt down and gave her "hers"......by the time I had unwrapped mine she was staring level into my eyes.....please....her eyes said, so I did. Every time someone would approach us, she would just kinda shift to keep her body between me and the person approaching us. Linda had told me that she didn't know if she had been trained or now but she had gotten her while she had taught school in Germany as a fellow professor was going to Africa and couldn't take her. I let it slip that I had bought her a biscuit and she was "Now you can rob my house, I knew she was overly fond of you, now I know why. My theory about Belgians: They have to WIN! They won't ever give up.

I'm disabled (mobility issues) and I own a Malinois, we train 2-4 times daily. Don't sell yourself short by limiting yourself and you don't need to be fully active to work a Malinois to its fullest potential. In fact I have three high energy dogs. You can do this. That squirrel issue should have been dealt with early on in that dog's life as a pup not as a 70 lb dog. Take a look at Michael Ellis' (Leerburg) and Andy Krueger's channels to start with.

Thank you for posting up this video. This is great material. I would like to know his suggestion on training if it was and older dog. I hopefully would like to adopt one in the future since I am sure many have been put up for adoption due to being too much for an unprepared owner to handle. Another request though not this breed specific is how to train dogs to avoid venomous and poisonous animals. For example, I plan to keep a dog in Florida and would like for them to avoid snakes and cane toads. But I am also wondering how to train them to go after certain animals. For example to chase off birds that try to catch fish from ponds on the property. Thank you :)

Just uploaded a video of our 11 months old malinois 🔥 no doubts that malinois is super intelligent and easy to train if you know the right method! Study 📚 before you get a puppy!

the more i see off the GSD and Malinois the more i understand how underrated or feared the APBT is it excels in all aspects but has a to strong emotional understanding of its handler

Nobody said anything about the apbt and a malinois would destroy that small dog
