There are two elite police and protection dogs, the Belgian Malinois and the German Shepherd. Many folks can not tell these two breeds apart. But those of you who watch Dogumentary TV I'm sure have no problem with that. In this versus video I go over some of the general characteristics of each of these fine working dog breeds.

Best comparison yet. Let the dogs speak for themselves. I love the Malinois but personally prefer the shepherd for what I'm looking for which is home and personal protection period a good working German shepherd will get the job done like no other but will also have that great off switch for home life.

@ 1:15 is not a malinois, here in Belgium it's called the Tervuurse Scheper (shepherd from Tervuren). We have 4 types of shepherd and altough they are seen as one breed, never say that to someone from Belgium because they are NOT the same in terms of looks ;-). We have 4 types, the Laekense herder, Tervuurse herder, the Groenendaeler and the Mechelse herder (Malinois is in fact called Mechelen). All have there names from the town or city they were created.

My Akita gave me the comfort of lazy days with the dog. there were plenty of times I missed the puppy drive as he got older. No one dared enter the house unwelcomed and I never worried about an unprovoked attack. Even watched the neighbors kids outside playing and if a stranger walked by would turn on automatically. I never gave him the full job of protector, as his dad I guarded the guard dog. I had one incident with a pitbull that broke his chain and charged, I dropped the leash, Akita mounted and bit across its spine and pitbull ran off crying. Is the Malinois for me... Not sure yet.

Once saw a special where a trainer of both breeds for police work said both are excellent at what they do. Said difference is in attitude. Said when malinois engages in bitework he is having fun. The german shepherd, on the other hand, seriously wants to hurt you. Both breeds get the job done.

I think the athleticism of the Malinois really sets it apart from the GSDs. I never get tired if watching my Mal chase things, climb, and jump. It feels like some laws of physics are being violated at times. I also enjoy taking him to dog parks and showing off by having him jump fences and climb retaining walls. Other dog owners jaws drop when they see him in action.

I own a German Malinois (GSD/BM Mix). She is more Malinois than Shepherd. Absolutely stunning and has the most beautiful coat. These dogs shed like no other. They are absolutely amazing and have an extremely high capability of learning; I've taught mine over 35 things (She's with me every single day, just about everywhere I go). At this time of writing 1/22/2020 @ 6:00AM PST she is 4 years old (Turning 5 years old on February 28th). Look below for some notes based on my personal experience: Here's a few of the maintenance responsibilities I have for myself that might help some others when thinking of getting one: -Brushing Hair - Daily -Vacuum Room - Every 24-72 hours (Also purchased a Robot Vacuum for living room, etc) -Vacuum Car - Every 1-2 weeks -Change/Clean Air Purifier Filter - Approx. every 2 weeks -Brush Teeth - At least 1-2x a week -Shower - Monthly (Using a deshedding shampoo, a deshedding conditioner, and a flea & tick shampoo that lasts 12+ days) -Flea & Ticket Collar (Seresto brand) - Every 6-8 months -Petting her showing my love for her - About 2-5x a day -Letting her run around backyard (Not be a couch potato), etc - About 1-3 hours/day -I don't allow her to jump/dive from too high of platforms so I can try avoiding Hip/Elbow issues, etc -Food - 3x+/daily (Using a measuring scoop and a Dog Maze Bowl designed to slow down eating) Here's some of the tricks she knows or has done: -"Be Nice" - Will simmer down (Few examples of why this is useful: 1) If she's making too much noise out of excitement and people are sleeping, 2) If we're going up the stairs and I'm wanting her to do so quietly 3) Someone is approaching us but I know they aren't a threat, etc 4) If I am giving her a snack and don't want her to snatch it) -"Creep" - I say that to her when I want her to creep up the stairs / walk slowly up or down the stairs. Basically keeping real quiet so nobody is disturbed when they're sleeping, etc -Open door (Not with a circular door knob just yet but with a "lever" type of door knob and can also pull on a rope hanging on a door knob to open it) -Close door (understands how stand on her back legs and close the door; Even does it politely aka "nice") -Get in the shower (I'll have the shower door open with the water running and will tell her to get in, she goes right in like nothing) -Smell & Search (Upon my command will smell the reference in my hand and will begin an environmental search for it) -Bark on command -Eat (Will eat on my command) -Don't eat (Won't eat the food; Useful for if someone is trying to feed her something or if theres food on the ground somewhere randomly) -Drop It (will drop food even during eating which is useful if someone tried to feed her without my consent, etc. Also used for if I throw a ball and she brings it back to me) -Sit -Sit next to papa? (She will come sit right next to me on my bed, or by the couch, or to the front seat in my car, etc) -Follow me / Stay with me (She'll do just that; Useful if I'm riding a Bike, Hoverboard, Scooter, etc..) -Poop (Will poop where I tell her) -Do you have to poop? (I have her confirm and tell me she has to poop through touching me with her nose or ringing a bell when I ask her) -Questions - Sometimes I am not sure what it is she wants so I ask her "Do you have to poop?", "Are you hungry?", and "Do you want water?". She confirms by reacting to the one she wants. I one time did this, she had to poop and I rushed downstairs; Soon as I opened the door she ran outside pooping all over the grass but thank god that wasn't inside!! -Protection Mode (When I tell her "Keep an eye out" or "Protect" - she gets in a defensive mode and scans everywhere around us. Soon as anything moves she'll start barking viciously) -Attack (She will not let whatever or whoever come near us and will even proactively dart against the target -Move (Moves out the way) -Wait (will wait or "pause" in position on my command. I say "pause" because if I use the "wait" command when giving her food she won't touch it until I give her the command to eat) -Gimme 5 (handshake) -Take a seat -Lay down -Play dead -Give me the ball -Get up -Nose (I place a food item on her nose she shoots it in the air to eat or quickly lets the food drop from her nose and catches it in the air -Kiss (gives me a kiss) -Help (She'll rush to me and try to assist; this ones hard to explain but I've tested it by pretending to be in pain in the bathroom on the floor and she jumps up on the door knob and opened it then rushed to my aid

I heard this long time ago when i started to get involved in the K9 work, and i have learn that it is probably the best metaphor. Malinois are like DB (Defensive Backs) and GSW are like LB (Line Backs). Good luck with your puppies, if you are willing to put in the work and passion, both of these breeds will amaze you.

Friet Chinees No, showlines are not even close to the old german shepherds or the "classic" type. Only working lines should be allowed to represent the breed in my opinion, all other lines are not the ideal type that the founder of the breed would have wanted. look at my playlist of working dogs and you will see dogs with no structural problems at all. that is what i mean by classic lol

We had a German shepherd, she was able to jump over obstacles 3' high and 2'wide without her toes touching them. That was without any kind of practice, I had used something to block a doorway and I look and from a standstill she is flying over the blockade I had made. She could figure out any command after 2-3 tries and I taught her a couple more even when she was 11 years old. I love GSD's huge ears and smiles.

I prefer GSD for following reasons: First, there are many breeders for GSD that can provide quality dogs with correct temperament and health. Second, there is more material available for GSD in regards to behavior. Third, there are much more varieties of colors in GSD. Fourth, there is a lot more literature available for GSD than for Malinois. Moreover, there is show line and working line for GSD and much more varieties in coat length. Malinois is great for forces as they are light weight and easier to carry for soldiers. Also, one drawback with GSD is they are more prone to health issues than Malinois, but with a good breeder and a working line GSD, health is great too.

Your video is misleading yes they are both similar and great dogs but mals are hyper 24/7 saying they need exercise does not convey that this means hours of exercise every day not just a 1 mile jog family's are not going to be prepared for what they have gotten them self into and dogs are going to end up mistrained ,unwanted,or homeless its a great dog but tell people what to expect it only has an on button

Thank goodness, that for a change this channel in particular showed working-line GSDs, than the ubiquitous showlines. Thankfully, the working-line GSDs still have retained the temperamental traits of traditional GSDs, while the showlines have pretty much lost them via "selective breeding" for the show-ring. Many working breeds have been systematically destroyed by the show-breeders and the GSDs are no exception.
@JohnGardnerAlhadis
@JohnGardnerAlhadis 4 года назад
I wish the show-line breeding would just... stop. Our GSD has a nice straight back and is seriously beautiful. There's no reason working-line GSDs can't be good at dog shows; judges need to change their fucking attitudes and stop promoting genetic defects in the breed.

I will be picking up my first ever German Sheperd puppy next week & we are extremely exited but I am a bit concerned about the hip issues I hear about. I exercise with my dogs a lot & Ive had Dobermans & Rottweilers and none ever had any hip problems. I was told that if I got a working line sheperd it would be no different than with any other medium sized breed so that's what we did. Any comments or helpful hints from experienced GSD owners are welcome.

First of all, they seem ''smaller'' just because GSD has thicket coat. Second of all, weaker and easier to control? Have you ever met a malinois or trained one? They are not weak neither they are easy to control. They can be EXTREMELY stubborn if you don't show them whos the boss and really tough to train. Don't shit about the breed if you haven't done your research. Malinois is not for everyone, only devoted people, while gsd can live in every household even without being trained, tbh they are ''basic white bitch'' dog to me.

From what I've read the mal is more hyper with higher exercise needs. The mal is also liked by the Military cause being slightly smaller,but still big enough they are easier for a handler to pick up when need be. And due to their short coat the mal handles heat better.For the most part better depends on your needs and lifestyle. For a family pet that can also protect and work in not to hot climates I'd probably go GSD. For Military work in hot climates I'd probably choose the Mal.

when you work in the military you will appreciate the Belgian Shepard more, Belgians can work longer under extreme heat. i work for the army and i can tell when the temperature is more than 100 fahrenheit, the most i can get from the work-line german Shepard is 10-12 minutes.On the contrary with the Belgian Malinois, i can go for hours because they are more adapted to rough climate and rough terrain. I personally get offended when people say the work ability is the same and both dogs are the same due to this, the Belgian i way higher energy and is quicker in doing commands and are definitely not for novice dog trainers or handlers because their reactiveness is much higher than a German Shepard. if you want to compare both dogs you can say the Belgian Malinois is a German Shepard on drugs, no emotions or thought, they will even jump of a cliff without thinking, they act then think, very military kind of mindset .

I have the best experience with the GSD breed, wow!! I some time ago got a East German DDR male. By a few months he started with his suspicions and started barking at people and by about 4 months he was launching threw my car window at anyone who approached us. To this day his still this way. Someone approached us whilst brushing him in our front yard and it was a friendly approach and bang his on them within a few meters of us. His a black Male. His An adult now and a good boy. He has not much of a prey drive doesn't care for balls or toys or rags or treats his not toy or food driven. His harder to train. I also have a female GSD from West German Lines.. now she is something special!! At 12 weeks of age she is on the end of her leash complete civil aggression swinging off her leash trying to have at whoever she perceives her enemy and that's everyone outside of my family, and it just barking or like, I encourage my friend who I use as a decoy to run away from her once she notices him and begins barking and trying to bite him, and after a couple times of him running away, now we pursue him she swings off the end of the leash while I'm walking and she is non stop bark bark bark bark bark bark bark legs going scratching hard trying to go after the enemy. It's now where my friend his pretend running away threw the streets and we are pursuing him. Anyway she has massive prey drive, she loves toys rags balls and is super treat/food driven super easy to train. That is my difference in experience east vs west. I prefer west over east.

German shepherds are gorgeous from the head to the mid section. I hate the back ends on them. Looks like their hips are going to collapse at any moment.

Kiera FitzGerald your opinion doesn't affect german shepherds health, dogs with low hips still need to be healthy to be allowed to breed, its just aesthetics if you like it or not

It is the fault of the breeder's. You can always look for a straight back German Shepherd. They are very good.
@user-dx5bn4yk4f
@user-dx5bn4yk4f 6 лет назад
Try DDRs, European working lines have straight backs compared to the American showlines which developed hip dyspepsia for the breed due to inconsiderate breeding just for “aesthetics”.

I have one of each; 3year old male GSD and a 1 year old female Malinois. Though I love them equally, the Mal outclasses the GSD for what I want - an alert guard dog for the yard. The biggest difference I’ve seen is their energy levels and physical capabilities. The Mal never wants to stop, more athletic and more alert.

i had two Malinois. And my neighbor had a German which i also took care of for quite a while. I prefer the Malinois since the male Malinois grew the size of the german which was 3 months older than him when he was just 3 months old himself (the GS was 6 month old) Apart from that hte Malinois shepherds were easier to train and some what felt smarter while the German Shepherd was too hyper and very hard to train. So i prefer the Malinois over the German Shepherd.

German Shepherds Are Great With Other Pets In The Household If Socialised Properly. They Are Easy To Train. Make Great Champions. Hello,here to ask for advice from the more experienced dog owners. We are planning on getting a GSD as our first dog. I have some kind of experience with GSD,as i grew up with this breed. My grandparents had 3,over a period of 20 years and i spent all my summers there+the visits over the years. I trained one of them,just the basics,but on my own. I fed,brushed them and played with them. But i have never had one,per se,in my home. Same thing with my partner as well. We live in an apartment and we have lots of parks around. I work from home,so the dog won't be alone. Is the GSD the right choice for us? Of course,we plan on training the dog (ourselves and with a professional). We fell in love with this breed(actually,with both the Malinois and the GSD,but we are aware that we are not ready for a Malinois now) and we reasearched everything that can be researched about this breed. Should we take the step? Thank you !

And I for 1 understand when people on this thread say the GSD is the overall better dog.. this is because it is.. And when the mal owners counter with the working side argument in regards to military.. I have explained this in below comment but i will add,, lucky none of you are dog handlers in the army and would need a smaller cheaper animal that never stops Hey! Because for our purposes the GSD is better overall. A working GSD does everything the Mal does BUT turns off when you want it to.. it can slow down with you and your family.. forever being alerted from this position ears up hearing every single noise inside and outside the home whilst relaxing and constantly jumping off and patrolling.. But in a GSD manner. They are much easier to live with. But I will say the mal I had was Nothing compared to the apbt or neo or corso breeds in terms of energy so I found her to be quite easy to live with also very similar to the GSD.. So.. everyone always warned me of their energy levels aswell as the GSD energy levels.. And their correct they do have alot of energy but it's just in all the right places and the right times.. they can live a family life and they can relax and not chase kids around and carry on like pork chops.. where as breeds with less energy like neo's and corsos man I found them to be much worse. They would run for days in all the wrong places at the wrong times..

Cláudio Saraiva American standards are seriously out of touch with classification of the different Belgians haha you can get a Terv out of two Mals. You can get Groenendaels out of two Tervs. There’s a lot of overlap. My Groenendael has two Terv grandsires and a Mal great grandsire!

From my research- I prefer a German Shepard for my lifestyle. From what I've read- Malinois is like a GSD on speed and crack combined- mixed with a never off button and a much more agile body. I think the GSD is just more flexible in terms of lifestyle although still needs lots of exercise. Both would be amazing dogs really- but I think I'm still gonna stick with my GSD!
@avyeris
@avyeris 6 лет назад
Everyone here saying GSD are “better” lol. How do you define better ? Since when is a bigger dog better ? What if I live in a warm environment where dense hair becomes an issue? In my eyes if you want a more manageable dog for a wider amount of environments Malinois is far superior. But if size (and the fact that you gotta feed that extra size more) is not an issue and you live in colder environments then and ONLY then GSD makes a case. As far as a guard dog GSD is better but it’s not that most of us need one like this.
@sheldoncooper1593
@sheldoncooper1593 5 лет назад
Well..GSDs are more manageable as they can adapt to all kinds of temperature and has less drive...mal are the better military dogs because of how athletic they are..they are also smaller and hence needs less food...but only gud trainers can train mal..so gsd are more versatile, can work as well (not as gud as mal of course ) while being calm and suited to most families..

I have a GSD myself and absolutely love her. I'll never have a dog quite like her. But I would at some point like to get a Mal. I'm just afraid that as active as I am with Samantha, my GSD, that won't be enough for a Mal. I've read/heard their energy levels are akin, or moreso even to that of a husky.

gsd is more of a family dog compared to a working mal thats why many shity fat humans love gsd coz they can keep a gsd even if they just eat and sleep unlike a mal that needs exercise. only experienced people can keep mals for newbies is GSD and Labrador😂😂😂

A few years ago two rogue neighbor's Pitts were terrorising the block. They invaded my old lady's front yard. She's got type two diabetes and didn't know better. My mom grabbed a broom and started to shuuu.. shuu...Shuu bad dog. Get outta here.. shuu, shuu.. I knew there was an accident bound to happen. I panicked. I didn't know if to grab my mom or punk the dogs with a rebar. I called the police; mean while there were these two kids passing by. They were walking their German Shepherd. The Pitts jumped on the German Shepherd. The kids were dead scared and so was I. The officers showed up just in the nick of time to save the day ( I feel sorry for the owner of the Pitts but I owe a bunch of gratitude to those children and their German Shepherd)

Stick with the German Sheherd. I've had several, and worked with them. I just got a mal, and had to give him up. He was an unstable nut case. I put in so much time, love and devotionto him, only to have him attack both of my parents for no reason. He gave no warning as well. Also our local police dept just had to give up one of thier mals, as it just attacked an officer for no reason. They are like a tool, they should be used by an experinced handler, go do thier job, be exercised, then put away. I do not believe they are good family pets. get the GSD, and have a dog that can do most of what the Mal can do, but is also a great family dog.

Mike Cole Mals should only be used for a job. They are far too unstable and need to have something to do or they will ruin your life. They are not the type of dog to be a pet. Whereas German shepherds are far more suited to being a pet. If you don’t have a job in the military, army, police or bomb squad don’t get a Mal! 🐶
@stevesparrow8598

I totally agree. I had one for two weeks. We put a ton of time into working with him. He liked me, But ended up attacking my Mom, Dad, and Female Giant Schnauzer. I did all kinds of work with him, But if you tried to dicipline him, he would become angry and try to attack. They need to be raised from a puppy to do a job. They are terrible pets for the most part. theres always exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, stay away.

Another fact about malinois is, they can run extreme hight. They can run, 40mph, 41mph, 40mph , 43mph and over. So they're extremely fast, better than a bullet. I have malinois so I know. German shepherd run 30mph.
