This episode is all about sex and the Christian. We discuss how the Old Testament and New Testament differed on the issue, how Augustine ruined sex for Christians for hundreds of years, and how sex is viewed in the church today.
We talk about the dangers of abstinence only education, the importance of teaching consent, and we break down a really stupid song.
As always we are not experts, we just google this stuff.

No parent would ever use an abstinence approach to teach children about, fire, knives, finances, or driving. Why would anybody tell their children to repress a natural drive and not properly educate them on how their bodies work? It's reckless.

@28:00 On the topic of WHY churches are so strict about sex. We also have to remember that sexism and control over sexuality is rooted in economic and political structures too. The nuclear family as we currently know it didn't really exist at all before the dawn of capitalism. Think about it, it's a perfect set up for capitalism. In rich families, the nuclear family means that men know exactly who their children are who will inherit their property, and since they only have 1 wife, they don't have a million children squabbling for property. For poor families.... workers under capitalism often have to move from place to place in search of work, breaking them away from large extended families or communal living situations. If a man is completely and totally responsible for providing for a wife and kids without community support, he'll work very hard and complain very little. If a woman is stuck at home cooking and cleaning, she can do a lot of unpaid domestic labor, freeing up her husband to out and work himself to death. Ban abortion and contraception and women will bear many many future workers. Taking away the ability to not have kids means that workers will always be desperate for money and always desperate for work. Control workers' sexuality and reproduction, you control the working class.

@The Expat Dodo Yeah, it's simplistic, but sometimes the truth is fuckin simple, my dude. No. Not all ancient cultures had strict sexual taboos, except concerning incest (and who was and wasn't considered part of your family varied between cultures.) We only see strict taboos in class based societies many of which we today would call "ancient" but in terms of human evolution are extremely novel. No body in the "ancient" world was trying to restrict breeding, in fact they often encouraged women to have as many children as possible. Recourses back then were so plentiful that no one would have even thought of population control. Sexual control arose because as society became wealthier and technologically advanced with the advent of agriculture, this fundamentally changed the way people thought about property and inheritance. For reasons we don't have time to explain here, this caused society to shift from a matriarchal idea of a family like humans originally had, to a patriarchal family. And men wanted to make sure that their property was passed down to their children. Which meant controlling women to guarantee the paternity of offspring. Yes, most societies have some notion property. But that doesn't mean the concept of capitalist private property is universal. Between different societies, people have had vastly different ideas about what it meant to "own" something, and who had right to own what. When feudalism was abolished in Europe and capitalism was established, the way people thought about property changed dramatically, since people no longer had the idea that you had the divine right to property because the family you were born into. When people say "abolish private property," they mean "change the way we think about property so that one person doesn't have the right to own very large amounts of wealth." not "get rid of the concept of property all together." Also the idea of bodily autonomy and "owning yourself" is not a universal human concept at all, because since the dawn of class-based society, women's bodies were considered the property of husbands or fathers and slave's bodies were the property of their masters. So I'm not sure what point you're trying to make by bringing that up.

The idea of having consent teaching for something like hugs sounded silly to me at first, then I remembered a boy who would hug and poke me in school, and I hadn't known how to get it to stop, or that my being uncomfortable really mattered because the touches weren't on a "swimsuit area". So, yeah, consent teaching sounds great. It could also lessen anxiety for autistic kids, or people w/ ptsd especially, if people just know not to touch w/o asking. Other stories: One girl had to drop out of public hs for being pregnant in a christian town, whereas in the city no one would have batted an eye (I went to two public high schools, in adjacent cities). There was also an anti-sexting meeting where they basically just slut-shamed all the girls and told them they'd go to jail for child p*rn. But even sex ed at the more liberal school was std slide shows, no birth control taught besides condoms, let alone abortion or consent, and the culture was still more hateful towards girls. At my friend's catholic hs, a female teacher just took all the girls aside and cried and begged them not to have sex, until they all cried and promised they wouldn't. At that same school, the male teachers came together and banned girls wearing yoga pants, because it made *them* "uncomfortable", no pretext about "protecting" the school boys, even.
@Ben-Rogue
@Ben-Rogue 3 года назад
As adults, we shouldn't need to ask consent for a hug or any kind of non sexual contact, as for most people it's easy enough to read a given situation and to pick up on body language. For those of us who are less socially adept, it's a bit more challenging though. I myself struggle with physical contact and picking up on body language, as I was socially stunted growing up due to bullying and lack of self confidence and never really had anyone in my family teach me about body language, sexuality or really any social skills. It's a bit embarassing how bad it can be. An example that actually happened with me was with a slightly older woman that I worked with, that had a crush on me. She would be overly touchy, sit right next to me and always talk to me about her most personal stuff. It's so bad that I still didn't pick up on it when she started regularly nudging and brushing up against me in a suggestive way and started giving me the "fuck me" face. It wasn't until she took my arms and made me hug her before I realised what she had been doing; hitting on me.
@hazelsunderstood6784
@hazelsunderstood6784 2 года назад
I think they should teach the consent to hug from both sexes and then bring the damned parents in for the same lesson. All the younger guys at work don't feel the need to touch me, but all the older married guys with children act like it's their right. They get pissed, tell me I have issues and I have not been taught things I need to know for work -Because I told adults not to touch me in a respectable manner. Just..... So fricken much I could say on this subject. So many terrible experiences as both an adult and child.

Consent for hugs is very important to the neurodivergent. I went through a time where I would do a full body collapse in an attempt to communicate I would prefer no hugs. Needless to say it backfired and I ceased the behavior. Imagine a world where everybody asked if you wanted a hug and then accepted no for an answer?

The lack of hygiene in the middle ages is greatly exaggerated. In most of medieval Europe people would wash their hands, feet, and face daily, and bathe once a month, and in northern Europe people would bathe weekly. Bathing did take a downturn during the black plague, but that was mostly a result of public bathhouses being closed due to the plague, and that was also mostly just in western Europe, France and England especially. Weekly bathing continued as a practice even in these times in places like northern Europe and Poland.
@michac.8283

That's mostly because Poland made some sort of a nationwide quarantine and basically avoided the pandemic. I'm sure they'd close the bathhouses if the plague was a big problem there

My sister got pregnant at 15. My Catholic mother said that getting pregnant was her punishment from god. Sadly the baby was premature and died. My mom then sad that was her punishment from god. I thought babies were a gift from god, not a punishment. And the idea that god would kill my sister’s son to punish her is even more disgusting. Mom also warned me that is I got pregnant before I got married that I would HAVE to have an abortion (so she wouldn’t be shamed by having two pregnant teens I assume). Fortunately both my sister and I later came out as lesbians. Mom wasn’t happy about that either. But at least I never had an abortion!

I remember during my last years as a believer, my pastor at the time did a sermon that was this passive-aggressive rant about Christians letting their guard down for sexual temptation. It turns out the whole thing was motivated by the recent revelation that his daughter had gotten pregnant out of wedlock. She and the guy (who was active in the church) were later married but he and his wife looked like they survived some catastrophe. Like the circumstance was so tragic that they couldn't get past it. I always hoped they did a 180 and treated their grandchild as a gift, but I was more or less through with the church by that time. It stuck with me though. People so hung up on purity culture and fixated on things going to an exact plan thay they can't live in the moment.

A few years ago my sister moved in with a man (due to not being able to afford a apartment by herself) in which he was just a friend/roommate. When my father (who was an elder in our church) found out he told the entire session and she immediately got ex communicated without even talking to her, she just came for Sunday church and in front of the whole church she was told she was not welcome and was basically kicked out. She is now married (to another guy not the original roommate) and is allowed back in the church but she isn't allowed to sing in front of the church, put forward ideas, be a member, or do any after church activities all because she had a male roommate who she never did anything sexual with. It is amazing to just throw somebody away who's been in your church since they were literally born. My family has known most of the elders 20+ years and didn't even ask why. After that happened I left the church with my sister and have only gone back for Christmas just to make my father happy and barely talk to anybody when going and leaving immediately after the service.

My parents are so afraid of sex that when they were homeschooling me they didn’t even teach about hygiene for those bits of my body. Their obsession with purity led to me and a friend being naïve enough to accept that kind of abuse from an older kid. They didn’t even believe us when we came forward about it. The Christian obsession with sexual purity is outright dangerous.

I think sex education needs to be a basic human right, like I hear from so many people who grew up in Christian communities who were so hurt and got into so many abusive situations because they didn't get real sex education. I don't think religion should have a say in what facts you're allowed to know about your body. Because the facts don't change no matter what you believe in, the facts are facts just like gravity and history. And this is even more important to know than gravity because it's about YOUR BODY! you NEED to know this information and I think it is criminally negligent to withhold information from people based on YOUR groups beliefs. That's what I think is right.

The United Church was a purely Canadian invention, though it has spread to other countries. It was created after the Halifax Explosion of 1917. Anglicans, Methodists and Presbyterians couldn't afford to each rebuild their churches after the explosion, so they shared one church building. Out of this came a movement to unite the three denominations across the country. What resulted was that half of each denomination agreed to unite, and half of each remained in their original form. The three uniting factions found that their theologies were completely contradictory, so they eventually started leaving theology out of it and concentrating on bake sales and charity work. This suited the Canadian temperament, and it became the largest Protestant denomination in Canada ---- and it still is. It stated having gay clergy in the 1980s and performed gay marriages before anyone else. The huge position that the United Church has in Canadian society is probably why gay marriage was not a big political issue in Canada.

The mentality that educating kids about sex is "enabling" promiscuity is so frustrating to me because it's wrong and incredibly harmful. The numbers show that abstinence-only sex ed doesn't decrease sexual activity, it just increases the number of teen pregnancies. I deal with the same thing in my line of work, where people refuse to let us give clean needles to people who use drugs because they think we're empowering people to use drugs. It's naive to think that someone who was planning on shooting up won't because they don't have a fresh needle every time. They'll just use their friend's or reuse an old one, significantly increasing their risk of infection, HIV/HCV, or doing damage by jabbing themselves with a blunt needle. Literally no one goes "Now I can finally shoot this heroin I've been holding onto because I didn't have a clean needle before!"

Raised thinking s3x before marriage was wrong. It really did not help my mental health when I got with my now husband. We had been together for 5 years and still hadn't had s3x and I just kept thinking, I love this person. Why is it bad. I struggled so hard with wanting to show him my love. Eventually I said fuck it and just did it. I'm glad I did. It gave us a chance to know each other better and I had no idea why the church found it so wrong. I'm much stronger in my sexuality now. I have no problem with people who work in the sex industry either. It pays the bills, go for it. Even told my husband we should. LMAO! I know my "father" who is a "Preacher" was mad cause I was moving in before marriage, but yet he had done all the same, including the s3x before marriage. Then my fathers new wife shamed my brother for having a kid before marriage and they ended up losing that child. Just the whole idea is outdated and a way to keep women from having illegitimates children. We need better education in the church on the subject. I always said my parents were together just so my siblings and I can be here. Then my mom found her true love in the man I'm proud to call my stepdad. He is a better man than my real father. S3x is natural. If you take the proper care and precautions, then go for it.

I was active in the Lutheran church until I was about 24. No one ever said a word about my living with any of the guys I dated. No one said I couldn't teach Sunday school for the pre-k and kinder kids, or teach a week of vacation bible school to a bunch of 4th and 5th graders. However, when my best friend and sometimes roommate wanted to move her girlfriend in, I had to set up residence in their 3rd bedroom as a weekend roommate as cover. It was just 3 women sharing a house, definitely not a couple and their weekend roommate who basically just showed and changed clothes there because I worked 48 hours straight and slept at work and went to college and stayed in the dorms during the week 70 miles away. They eventually got sick of living a lie and came out to our church. The "young adult" group we were in already knew and didn't care. Same with about 75% of members 10 years older or younger. The other 25% knew and didn't like it but figured it wasn't there problem. The problem was with the people more than 10 years older than us. They kicked her out of the church and then excommunicated her. I don't know why they were surprised when I left and then so did half of our age group and then most of the younger kids when they turned 18. So premarital sex, that's fine. They never actually said anything about premarital sex, just having a child out of wedlock. But homosexual relationships are apparently totally taboo.

Tbh the whole thing about annual bathing is fake, people have bathed on average several times a week since forever lol. The myth arose because modern people can’t imagine how anyone could have bathed without indoor plumbing, that it must have been a massive effort, but in reality you just grabbed a pot of water or snow, heated it up with some herbs, and scrubbed yourself that way. Laundry was done several times weekly, as was changing the beds weekly, with new mattresses usually being made once a year or so.

If the first people, or, well person since it was only Adam for a while, if Adam was made as basically a copy of God doesn't that imply that God has a flaw to sin as well? I know Christians would say, "Well, it was Eve who sinned because she was made from Adam, not God." But that's dumb too, because why would God allow the flaw to exist? To me it doesn't really matter because God created Eve by his own hand. Plus, he made these supposedly perfect creatures knowing they would do what he told them not to, then he gets so pissed that he kills all the people AND animals AND plants (because I guess they were bad too...?) only to keep a handful alive THAT ALSO HAVE THE FATAL FLAW OF SIN IN THEM! So WHY, WWWHHHYYY does he go through all that trouble of killing everyone except the handful of people who were just ok and still liable to rebel again? It's also pretty suss that his line in the sand is gaining knowledge; that's telling. Why didn't he just sterilize the Earth and try again? PLUS, the fact his creation was so bad the first go around he had to wipe the slate almost clean doesn't speak to his greatness as a creator. That story actually says he sucks pretty bad at making things....

You forgot about Lilith who was made for Adam before Eve, but was ‘flawed’ by being to independent from Adam (she didn’t obey him so she was banished from the Garden of Eden) the ‘perfect God’ was so bad at making women He had to do it twice? Isn’t He supposed to be all knowing? How did He not see that coming?

@@ookamiblade6318 plus the serpent is in there whispering to Eve. How did god 1) create the serpent 2) lose control of it 3) lose track of it long enough for it to subvert his ultimate creation?

I once read a different version of the Abraham and Pharaoh thing. It was summed up as, "Their word for 'sister' and 'cousin' is the same, and they marry their cousins." So Abraham didn't lie, he was just mistranslated.

On a side note the story of the woman accused of adultery and Jesus stopping the stoning, it was in none of the early manuscripts, it's a later addition.

The bible version is missing like half the story. Abraham has some weird dream about a tree and fruit and learns that the Pharo is going to kill his wife so he has to tell the Pharo she's his sister, but he's worried that the Pharo will fuck Sara, so he prays to god that he doesn't touch her and God gives the Pharo incurable erectile disfunction. The Pharo begs Abraham to take Sara back and that's when the Pharo is just done with Abraham all together and leaves frustrated. One of my favorite stories. The full version is in the Dead Sea Scrolls which completely recontextualize parts of the Bible.

The bits of the dead sea scrolls that haven't been released yet meta-re-contextualize that as the story arc of a series of popular Mesopotamian plays.

Church community: yup when I decided to actually divorce and get out of a toxic marriage…my Christian friends stopped including me in stuff even tho now I was a single mama with no family around. They went further and made up stories about me gossiping about them so they could feel “good” about severing our friendship. When I would call the church for help as a single mom…”well we don’t have anything set up for single moms”

Abraham didn't admit that Sarah was his wife because he was afraid the Pharaoh would have him killed so he could take Abraham's wife for himself. If she's just his sister, his life isn't in danger. Basically he handed her over to save himself and had her promise she wouldn't tell.

Mormons still teach that polygamy is an eternal principle. They just don't support polygamist marriages here on earth for now. The doctrine and covenants talks about it being how they will live in the afterlife. One man, lots of women

(This happened in Germany) my mum was evangelical Lutheran and my dad is Roman Catholic so they had two pastors at their church wedding and the evangelical Lutheran was actually unmarried and pregnant on the day of their wedding (my parents and also some of their guests knew and didn't mind, but the Catholic pastor did not, and luckily he never found out because this man already had his issues with my mum not converting to Catholicism apparently.)

my uber Mormon grandparents refusing to even tell their kids anything about sex at all (because if they don't know what it is, they clearly won't do it) and only tell them about puberty stuff, AS IT'S HAPPENING instead of giving them a heads up about the weird sh!t their bodies were about to start doing, is the reason my mom got pregnant at 14 and had my older sister when she had just turned 15.

I don't think a public school should have to separate Mormon kids for their own sex ed class. That said, I was raised Christian and on the day we had sex ed in middle school, I was the only one who was sent to the library to just go read or something because my mother contacted the school to exempt me. I would have at least preferred to suffer in a separate class with other kids who had parents like that 🤣

Just wanted to point out that these statements on hygiene are purely myth. People would wash from a basin in the morning or dry bathe via a towel when it wasn't possible to bathe in a body of water or a washtub. People didn't wear deodorant like we do today, and perfumes were typically for the wealthy or special occasions- but people didn't just...stink and accept it? Public sanitation wasn't what it is today, so the environment certainly smelled far worse if you lived in cities. Townsends did a video on hygiene in the 18th century that's worth a watch if you're interested in knowing more: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BoT3C-ae8io.html

So, Abraham was like, "Yo, she's my sis" because he was worried about the Pharoah prefiguring David by doing a Uriah on him. Lest that seem an apologetic for the story, the only reason they didn't "get fruitful wi'd it" was because it was karoake night up in heaven, and God was all "Can't touch this!"

I've heard a theory that because Sara was Abraham's half sister and she gave birth to Issac late in life, that Issac was born with Down's Syndrome. When Sara and Abraham were looking for a wife for Issac, they told their servant to look for a woman who was "kind". Which might have been because their son had a cognitive/physical disorder.

I thought that god looked down on the Old Testament examples of fornication, which is why when Abraham tried to have a child with the servant woman god made that child the enemy of Isaac? And his descendants became the ishmaelites. No disrespect meant just trying to fully understand as I’ve been looking for evidence for and against Christianity to see how I actually feel about it.
