Over 100 UK Performers Come Together to Record 'The Bells of Notre Dame' From Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
Over 100 UK performers have come together to remotely record "The Bells of Notre Dame" from Disney's iconic animated film 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
The group, which includes a mixture of West End performers, (Les Miserables, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Book of Mormon, Bat out of Hell and more) performers from across the UK and new performing arts graduates, recorded their parts for the song from their homes to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. The individual recordings were then mixed together to create the final performance,.
The project has been produced by Wicked actress Rebecca Gilliland, who founded the new production company, Bookend Productions, to give artists a chance to perform after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theatres across the world.
About 'The Bells of Notre Dame' remote recording:
'The Bells of Notre Dame' is the opening number from the 1996 Disney motion picture 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. Composed by Alan Menken with lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz.
This version has recorded by an 100+ strong cast (listed below) who were provided with backing tracks, sheet music and vocal lines to practice to and record remotely at home to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. The number is performed with the permission and support of the Walt Disney company.

My very favorite line in this song has always been from the archdeacon: "You can lie to yourself and your minions, you can claim that you haven't gone wrong, but you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes. The very eyes of Notre Dame."

Yeah, it's extremely powerful, cuts right to the soul. And think about it... There's not really another Disney villain out there that has that sort of moment where their conscience kicks in and forces them to do good... before they backslide into their most despicable selves. Frollo is the most interesting to me because that cry from the Archdeacon COULD cut him to the soul like that.

From what I understand (and this may or may not be true) is they wanted to use a church choir for the Broadway production and that was going to be too expensive.

Actually what happen was they wanted to use a large choir but because of the Broadway union only a certain amount of actors can be cast. Hunchback could of went to Broadway if they got rid of some of the ensemble but they didn't want that so they pass Broadway up from what I heard.

I just realised that when Quasimodo's mother ran from Frollo the choir sang Dies Irae. Dies Irae was a song sung at funerals during the 1300s. It was literally a death song and the fact it was used as forshadowing for her death was genius.

but in the book of Victor Hugo Claude Frollo was a simple priest who lost his parents to the plague, inherited the mill (the one that he set on fire in the cartoon), taught and educated his young brother Jean, and also added a hunchback child when the parisians wanted to burn him , because of pity for Jean. and in 1482 he died when he laughed after the hanging of Agnessa when Quasimodo threw down (Esmeralda's real name, which the old nun gave her, after she had a child stolen from her and instead of Agnessa, gypsys threw a Quasimodo.After 2 years, his skeleton and the skeleton of Agnessa were found in hug . I think Hunchback of Notre Dame 1996 is the best cartoon of Disney for all times ; but in my opinion - book of Hugo is better , it have more deep plot .

I believe that Alan Menken admitted that he considers 'Bells of Notre Dame' to be the best opening song he ever wrote. He's almost definitely right it is a pretty epic opening. My favourite line is, 'And he saw corruption everywhere, except within' that just sums up Frollo's character.

The guy voicing the Archdeacon was so on point. He sounds exactly like he does in the movie. And during the line "But you never can run from, nor hide what you've done from the eyes - the very eyes of Notre Dame." all the vocalists slowly fading in... even if just to sing "Kyrie eleison", that _got_ me. Extremely powerful.

Controversial take, but I think this film really could benefit from the live action treatment. Remove the gargoyles and take advantage of the PG-13 rating. Into the Woods showed Disney isn't afraid to do darker musicals

There was a great stage production in the 90's at Disney's MGM Studios (now hollywood studios) in Florida. It was epic. Theres an off broadway production lying around online somewhere too. The best stage production ive seen was in Seattle a few years ago with a deaf Quasimodo. It was excellent.

The only thing that minorly annoys me, that also annoys me in the actual film/score, is that with all the choral backing at the end you don't get to hear that bomb ass final note as well. It's such a hard note and requires such precision, it wouldn't need to be much just enough to highlight it more. The person singing Clopin is freaking amazing here

I was thinking the same thing, only I am a little more than a little disappointed, because I can tell that he hit the notes at the end, but I am straining to hear him at all, and it just shouldn't be like that. Loved everything else about this group performance though!

I hadn't listened to it in a while, and I think that maybe the note is just so remarkable that in my mind, it was easier to hear. I stand corrected! I agree with you - just a minor disappointment in both versions, because the note is just hit so well! 😊 At the same time, it does make sense in a way to draw the attention from the individual storyteller (who has finished his part for now) to the full power of the chorus that will play such an important role throughout the story...

In the novel as well. Victor Hugo played a lot with the person's outward appearance versus their character. Those who physically appeared to be the most pure of heart had rotten morals and vice versa.

The film has indisputable tone problems, it wants to be seriously epic and Disney at the same time (the gargoyles and physical gags) but my god, the soundtrack is masterful. I listen to it regularly. It gets me every time

Even as an adult I appreciate them because they not only add valuable emotional depth and character development in the scenes with Quasimodo, but they also provide some comic relief which you need in a story this intense.

Even as a kid, I knew note-for-note that The Hunchback of Notre Dame was and always would be the peak of Disney's musical magnificence. Don't get me wrong, they came out with some good ones afterwards, but the music in this film hits my choir spirit just right. You all did a great job of evoking that feeling, the spine-chilling awe and wonder I felt the first time I saw the film in theaters, and every single time after when I heard this song.

It's arguably the best soundtrack Disney's ever done. Sure, others were more fun, more catchy, more memorable, etc. But from a technical, instrumental, and lyrical standpoint, this soundtrack does things no other Disney soundtrack ever comes close to accomplishing. God Help the Outcasts alone is more poignant, powerful, and unapologetic than most musical songs in general. The only animated musical OST that could stand equal is Prince of Egypt (though Lion King gets pretty close, I suppose).

Yeah this and Prince of Egypt. Though I'd argue Prince of Egypt is a far stronger film that's stood the test of time (despite the cringeworthy super white cast) and Hunchback has the better soundtrack (tho Stephen Schwartz is utterly brilliant) The "God" theme, Deliver Us, and Plagues stand out for PoE; this song, Heaven's Light/Hellfire, God Help the Outcasts and the general score of Hunchback stand out. The film itself has more problems (oh the gargoyles 🤦🏼 and ugh "gypsies") but I still love it.

I thought, that in the context of the movie, this music was stirring and ethereal. But sitting here, listening to this incredible group of singers, I am still shivering with chills hearing this being sung here. You are all superb and well chosen for the parts you're playing. I cannot express how grateful am I to you for making this. Disney musical did not make it to the Broadway, and I do not think that there is a place on Earth in 2021 where you can get any tickets to see it. Thank you for bringing this magneficent score to life. It is one of the most powerful movie openings I have ever seen, and this performance has done it justice.

I hear they're supposed to be making a live action movie... I'm not sure how I feel about that given their run of live action movies. If they go the direction they did for the stage show, get people who can actually sing, and don't act embarrassed about people singing, then it could be good. Of course, it's rather a shame that the real Notre Dame burned down...

I guess they didn't put it on Broadway because it doesn't have a happy ending. I have seen it in Germany in 2001 and I didn't know. Went out of the theatre feeling like shit, because the cliche of 'Disney always ends happily' didn't apply. It had a total run of three years, if I recall correctly and only had a revival in 2017.

I clicked out of curiosity... was completely captivated right at the first note! Bravo to all especially "Clopin!" Would love to hear the actor who is Judge Frollo in this sing as the Beast. The archdeacon (who is easy on the eyes btw) would sound great as Raoul! This song always gives me goosebumps!

I read the novel. The best scenes made it to the movie. Read: the *only* good scenes (that didn't have Pierre Gringoire; he's the best character). Esmeralda is such a frustratingly *stupid* character in the book. I was cheering for her death by the end. Disney spoiled me with their version. Frollo's descent into madness was decently done, I'll admit, and I admired book!Quasimodo's entire lack of fucks to give. The rest? Eh. It's a wash for me.

I miss singing in my choir so damn much, and this is one of my favourite soundtrack pieces of all times - and not just from Disney movies - and the impeccable performance along with everyone coming together to sing it so... Oh My God! I remember seeing the Hunchback of Notre Dame as a child and was immediately taken with the songs in the movie. I remember being able to feel the resonance of the choir in my chest. Listening to it now I had the exact same feeling. Now I'm 32 and old enough to be able to appreciate the technicality of it. This is beautiful! The soundtrack for the Hunchback of Notre Dame was completely underrated and does not get the credit its due at all. Just. Simply. Beautiful!

@@Quotenwagnerianer well I hope they'll be recreating this movie from the Stage Musical, Since the stage musical has elements from the book and has extra characters like Jehan Frollo and King Louis XI. Frollo is the Archdeacon again not a judge. It also expands the plot of the 1996 movie by including scenes from the book like when Frollo stabs Phoebus and then blames it on Esmeralda and Quasimodo throwing Frollo from the roof of Notre Dame.

both the movie and the stage version of the bells of notre dame are SO GOOD. i love how in the stage musical they say “what makes a monster and what makes a man” instead of who. although, i really love the haunting opening and fear in the movie version.
