There is a lot of history that surrounds the church at St Budeaux, in what is one of Plymouth's oldest parishes. The current building was constructed in 1563 and contains some relics from the previous chapel that was built prior to 1066. In 1569 Sir Francis Drake married Mary Newman here and during the English Civil War the church was almost destroyed and was restored in 1655.
The bells form a good sounding ring of 6 with John Taylor and Co restoring them in 2014 which consisted of removing the bells and frame and re-building on a new grillage. The bells are by a mixture of founders, Treble and 2nd by Mears & Stainbank 1888, 3rd and 4th by J, C & W Pennington 1780 and the ring is crowned by 2 bells from Taylor's cast in 1931.
