The Beloved Rogue (1927) Adventure, Drama, History Silent Film 

This is fantastic! I just discovered John Barrymore two weeks ago. Suddenly my life has meaning again. To be able to watch an artistic genius at work is something I just didn’t imagine that I would see , in the rest of my life. One thing that fascinates me about him is that unlike many performances from 100 years ago, I feel like he could be alive today and fit right in. He brings such everyday -ness to the roles.

I own this on dvd and as a longtime John Barrymore fan, I really like it.

Apparently the film is now public domain but the music is not. Some music has been restored but none of it from the original. I am good on the Classics and have identified the 5 sections of music. 1-34 min ; Mahler Sym #1 first three movements the 4th not used. 53:00 to 56; Bizet L'arlesienne Suite #2, last minutes. 1:16:21 to 1:20:10; Chabrier "Marche Joyeuse." !:28:00 to 1:32:13 Verdi Dance from Triumphal March, Aida 1:32:13 to End of movie, Waldteufel, The Skater's Waltz.

I can't see Angelo Rossitto (Beppo The Dwarf) without thinking of Master of MasterBlaster in "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome." I really liked him in that, "The Magic Sword" and "Freaks." He also appeared in "Mesa of Lost Women" and "The Corpse Vanishes." So many classics! =) The Master: "Who run Bartertown? Who... run... Bartertown?" Auntie Entity: "You know who." The Master: "Say." I was enjoying watching this until the soundtrack ran out around 35 minutes in. Searched around for a version with a complete soundtrack but couldn't find one, unfortunately. It's possible to watch this film on the Internet Archive and actually adjust the speed as suggested in another comment, but that version has no soundtrack at all. On a completely different note, I'm amazed how much John Barrymore reminds me here of the famous German comic Otto Waalkes. Moves and all (especially at the speed shown here)!

He really was The Great Profile, wasn't he? Too bad his life turned and ended so sadly. All he really wanted was to be an illustrator.

A charming film, though not one that Jack was actually happy with. This is run at the wrong speed; adjust to 75% for more natural motion. Could use livelier music on the opening credits, too! But thanks for posting it.

Ironically, the dialogue in silent movies is ofter more witty and refined than the talkies. Shakesperes unwashed Globe theatre audiences and the Sans-culottes who loved Villon, though, were conspirators with the Masters less embellished humor, to which the very refined were obligated to feign innocence.
