The Benefits of Boar Bristle Brushes

👩‍🦱
A boar bristle brush is made up of very closely packed, stiff boar bristles. What sets apart a boar bristle brush is that a regular brush is designed to detangle the hair. A boar bristle brush, which only has 100% boar bristles, is not designed to detangle the hair, but rather, it's designed as a styling and health maintenance tool for the hair. So how does it do this?
First of all, because it's made up of literal hairs, albeit much stiffer hairs than ours, and you're brushing your own hair with it, it does a really, really cool, unique job at cleansing the hair and smoothing down the hair cuticles, removing dust and debris. It's basically the historical equivalent of dry shampoo, because it does such a good job at picking up your scalp oils, bringing them away from your scalp, removing any visible greasiness. And then, as you bring the brush down the length of your hair, it draws those oils down the lengths of your hair and conditions your hair.

I use boar bristle when I style my kinky curly hair wet. It helps smooth and organize the curl pattern so it looks sleek and wavy when I use gel/leave in conditioner. Zero flyaways!

I had one as a child. My mom washed it in dishwasher (hand washing) detergent once a month and let it air dry. It lasted for decades. I stopped using it when blow dry styling with a round brush became popular. No idea what she did with it but it wasn’t worn out. And I mean she used it on me from at least age 5 and I discontinued using it in my early 20s.

I boil a pot of water, once it cools a little dip the brush in and use a come to clean it. It will make the brush a little softer and the bristles weaken over time, but you will get all of the gunk out. Mine usually last about a year or so. I use one for products, and one for regular brushing.

I started using one after finding one of your video tutorials! My hair is extremely thin, wavy, and fluffy/frizzy. And low porous on top of that! (Meaning it barely absorbs any product I apply.) It's to the point where multiple hair stylists had no idea how to make it less frizzy. The historical method is helping a lot! I can spread out the grease onto the dry parts, and then I use a hair powder to absorb the excess grease from my roots. And a bonus for me is that the boar bristle brush can be used very effectively to detangle too 🤭 Yes, it's not what they're made for, but it's perfect for my super thin hair 😊

My fine thin hair HATE it. I bought it for myself specifically as a recommendation for fine hair, but it makes my hair worse. It works on my kids hair though, so I keep it. The only brush that brushes my older ones thick hair without her crying in pain. She likes to keep her hair loose and wild, but it tangles alot, so this brush is a lifesaver for that.

I encouraged my partner to get one for his beard, and the improvement is incredible for day to day! People really don't realize for hair care they should have a comb and brush for detangling and a comb and brush for styling (that's a big part of why there is a small side and a large side to combs! But certain hair types need wider teeth on a comb than the "traditional" ones)

I've just started to regrow my hair. It's just over 3 inches now. Since it's so short the oil has nowhere to go. So I've been using a boar bristle brush to help remove some of the excess. When I had hair my mom had taught me to use head and shoulders every day. Every day! At least now it can grow out healthy. I'm only washing it when it needs it now and I use a small amount of castor oil on the very ends after I shower. I'm using a normal shampoo AND a conditioner! Lol. I'm making sure my hair is healthy and happy so I can be happy too. To be clear I willingly got a buzz cut because my hair was too difficult to manage. I didn't get sick or anything. I loved the way it looked. But I miss being able to style it so I'm growing it out and I'm going to learn to keep it healthy so I enjoy having hair this time. 👍 I also comb my hair focusing on my scalp. It's short enough that I can use a regular comb. I find that helps reach the scalp better than the boar bristle brush.

It's not that bad to shampoo every day, But you need to use a conditioner afterwards to replace the protective oils. I have to wash my hair daily because I work in the dust and dirt, but I always wash my hair with shampoo and then add conditioner and leave it in my hair while I wash the rest of my body, and then rinse out the conditioner just before I leave the shower.

Plus it makes her hair REALLY soft ❤ i have natural candy curls which WERE about the length of my waist but i cut it to just above my shoulders and have kept it up in a messy bun (cuz, I'm a stay at home mom to a 20 month old and homemaker , so, i need my hair out of my face and not weighing me down as i am constantly exhausted enough already, plus, when my hair was waist length, it took me FOREVERRRRRR to take a shoeer cuz i had to very carefully detangle my hair while washing and conditioning and gathering all the hair sheds , BUT i am now kinda regretting it cuz it DESTROYED my natural curl pattern. Thankfully though, my hair grows pretty fast and it seems to be returning to its natural candy curls ! ❤ yay ! ❤️

I also love the denman boar bristle brush that also detangles with its separate flexible bristles throughout the brush that ever so gently detangles. The combs I’ve used have been the wide tooth combs like the curved double teeth that’s shaped like a hand with a single handle. I would use a boar bristle brush once the hair is detangled and even oiled since it’s not always easily detangled unless this is done first. Maybe just the perimeter in aid of styling before washing? I’m washing less and less as I don’t have an overproduction of oils and only wash when I oil the hair. My scalp is never the problem, but I like to cleanse the scalp so I don’t accumulate dead skin cells on the scalp and thus clog the follicles. I believe boar bristle brushes can aid in keeping the scalp healthy too if used towards it. Thanks for the inspiring video!

Boar bristle brushes do not bring oil away from my scalp, it just spreads it out from just my scalp area onto the rest of my hair which makes it a greasy mess, that attracts dust because the grease is sticky. It's far from acting like a dry shampoo, in fact it's the opposite. Over brushing your scalp also results in excess oil production.
@chelseajackman7730
@chelseajackman7730 7 месяцев назад
If your hair oils are sticky you might have a different problem on your hands. Don't shampoo every day. Don't apply conditioner to your roots, including leave-in conditioner. Wash with warm water, rinse with tepid to cool water. Detangle with desired tool (brush, comb, etc) then boar bristle brush once dry. The old rule of thumb used to be a hundred strokes a night specifically for this purpose. Sticky hair oil could be an indicator of a health issue or problem with sebum production. Recommend seeing a dermatologist.
@CallmeCalypso
@CallmeCalypso 7 месяцев назад
@@chelseajackman7730 i don't have a problem if I don't use a boar bristle brush on greasy unwashed hair and leave it that way. I wash twice a week, never use hot water, don't do the things you mentioned, use a leave in on the lengths only and detangle while it's soaking wet with a wide tooth comb and air dry. I don't dry brush at all except on rare occasions when I oil my hair on purpose, or am trying to pull my natural oils through my roots, both before washing. My hair is naturally wavy and since doing this routine, it's gotten healthier, fuller and longer than it's been since I was a teen. My routine works great for me, there's no reason to see a dermatologist.
@chelseajackman7730
@chelseajackman7730 6 месяцев назад
@@CallmeCalypso Then don't complain about how greasy/sticky your hair gets? Your defensive reply seems like you're perfectly fine with the way things are, which belies your original complaints. As I said, sticky sebum probably warrants a trip to the dermatologist, but if you're fine with your hair oil being more viscous than it should be, stop complaining about it on the internet.
@chelseajackman7730
@chelseajackman7730 6 месяцев назад
Also, it just landed on me that you said boar bristles don't bring oils away from your scalp, it just spreads it down the lengths of your hair. That's exactly what it's for, sweet pea. Your natural hair oils are MEANT to condition the rest of your hair which is dead keratin. The boar bristles distribute the oils your scalp produces across the lengths of your strands. That's LITERALLY what this practice is for. And I repeat, sticky scalp secretions are a PROBLEM. Distributing your scalp secretions should be helping your hair, and since it's not, there's something wrong with your scalp secretion. But of course don't mind the hair professional and the functional medicine professional. That would be silly.

They should not be used for detangling. Detangle first with a Wet Brush. Cheap and awesome. Then use a 100% board bristle brush, with wider spaced bristles, gently going from. Top to bottom. I have medium straight/barely wavy hair and I use my boar bristle brush after my diy dry shampoo to clean out grease and cornstarch. It has really improved the health of my ends and gains me an extra day or two between shampoos.

Ok so help me out here please. I have a lot of hair! Its densely packed on my scalp and its also quite long. I'd also say my hair strands are a medium thickness and are wavy. Now with all that in mind, I had a boar brush when I was young and I have to say that I could never get it to actually brush my scalp. I don't know if my brush was just cheaply made and the bristles were not long enough (iirc the bristles were maybe about 1cm long) or if there's a technique to using the boar bristle brush that I'm unaware of. I would try brushing from my forehead to the back but I'd stop feeling the bristles touch my scalp about an inch away from my hairline. Or I'd part my hair down the middle to brush it down but again I'd stop feeling it less than an inch from the part. Can someone more knowledgeable than I clue me in on where I went wrong? Was it the technique? Do I just have too much hair? Was my brush just a crappy design?

I dunno. Had this brush for few years (mainly use on my kids), but it does NOTHING for me and my thin fine hair but make it insanely staticky...

So when they said "brush your hair with 100 strokes daily" did they mean this type of brush?

Does it have to be a boar bristle brush? I've got thin hair, is brush made of goat hair ok too??
@KatherineSewing

Yes, that may work if your hair is very fine and soft.

My hair is really thick and grows aggressively. This doesn’t work well for me.

I must be using them wrong because I’ve tried using them and they make my hair super staticky and my hair is so thin and wispy that it just sticks straight out. It’s horrible😂

Where can you buy a boar bristle brush from? Do the beauty stores sell them or online places??
@giupinkfairy

I got mine from Wet brush, it's vegan, the bristles are super soft so they don't break you hair, and has tiny super flexible teeth that help detangle without too much pulling. It does leave my hair a little frizzy, but I have slight waves and it causes less frizz than other brushes

The BEST hair conditioner anyone can ever have is your own oils from Your scalp, and your hair oil is the best oil that keeps the hair from environmental damage and dirt.... They've made brushes from the hair and manes of horses, pigs, and I'm sure all sorts of other animals. But I use a comb in the shower to detangle my hair so when I'm done washing and conditioning it all I have to do is run fingers through it as it starts to dry. My hair IS very curly so as it's starts to dry then I'll use a brush briefly. But no plastic brushes ever as they will cause split ends and severe tangles......

Did you round off your eye brows ? They look noticably softer and I take in your whole face instead of just 2 points.hope I wasn't rude.

What is a replacement for one who cannot use swine because religious reasons?

I cared for my hair for many years using only my fingers to detangle. Apart from that, you can look into a wooden brush or comb, or a sisal brush.

There are goat and horse hair brushes as well. These are softer though but work similarly.
