Headline...."Georgia Farmer Eaten by Melon Crazed Ducks". Your varietal ambitions are just breathtaking. Most of us around the country, north and south, will be resting on our oars after a challenging garden year. Not Young Travis though, who's trying to decide if he needs six or seven types of cabbage going into winter. Slow down, son, you're setting that bar pretty high.

in SW Louisiana, we "rest" in July and August, just harvesting, watering, trimming, and weeding a few hours a couple of days a week. But our fall garden is my favorite because the weeds, insects, and heat are so much less, plus we love the fall crops.

😂😂😂😂. Love your ducks!! Mine discovered where the food came from and started pecking at the sliding glass doors and leaving poo on the concrete back porch. That brought the flies and a super hard scrub brush if not cleaned before it dried. 🥴. Learned a football player was swimming in my pond and gave him $20 to catch them so they could get new homes. Was worth every penny and more to watch him chase them through the pond, up the WV hillsides for about an hour. (I lived in a deep "holler") Did you know ducks hide their heads in the growth and dirt, thinking you can't see them??!! 😂😂😂 😂

You should try Alabama Blue Collards. They're more heat resistant than a lot of green collards and keep their sweetness longer in warmer months. Also, blue and purple leafed collards are becoming increasingly rare so it's good to get more people growing them. Last time I looked, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange still had them in stock.

I’m near Memphis, and almost always overwinter collards. They’re very cold tolerant. They survived -5 to -10 during that deep freeze a few years ago. Also my red Russian kale did great too. The only thing I had out that wasn’t happy was chard. It pulled through, but it had a lot of frost damage.

Travis, why don’t you support Hoss & your parents by buying Hoss seeds that you seemed to personally manage. You started at Hoss and we all watched you for years on “Row by Row” with your Dad, and now you don’t even use Hoss seeds or even have Hoss as an affiliate of yours. I just do not understand why. Frankly Hoss seeds have the best germination and are much better than Luke’s MIGardner in my personal experience. I Appreciate you wanting to do your own thing, and you are doing an absolutely wonderful job, but it truly bothers me you no longer support Hoss or your family. Being a parent myself, it has to truly hurt both Greg & Sheila. Please consider mending whatever fence has been broken. I believe I speak for many other people. Sent with love ❤️

I have the BEST zucchini this year. I would like to see you grow it and see how it does for you. It is sweet, the skin is thinner and yummy, hardly any seeds, and doesn't get mushy when sautéed. It's called zuccinino rampicante. I got the seeds from baker creek. However the vines are huge like pumpkins. It can be harvested and eaten green or left to turn tan-ish and kept for longer. I'm freezing some to try out the storage and since it holds up so well to cooking, I'm going to try pickles.

Late Flat Dutch cabbage! You could trial it against your Megaton(?) cabbage. Late Flat Dutch gets BIG, is delicious, and good for sauerkraut (it is dense). Can't guess whether yours is the right environment for it though. It attracts white cabbage butterflies. Sadly. Also, unrelated, I learned that the pandemic brought a pandemic of squash poisoning to Europe. A lot of people were bored and did more veggie growing. And ended up in the hospital with horrible gastrointestinal illness due to consumption of squash with high concentrations of curcur-whatever. Upshot is to beware squashes grown from saved seed where the parent plant may have bred with an ornamental variety not meant for consumption.

@@LazyDogFarm Makes sense. I was also wondering why everything was marked down rather drastically.

Ruby Perfection cabbage is pretty enough to grow in the ornamental garden. So they are big on looks and just ok for taste. My favorite tasting cabbage is Stonehead. I just slice it up and eat it raw. A fast maturing smaller head is Tiara and the taste is fine for cooking but not eating raw.

I grew Stonehead once and it did pretty well. Haven't tried Tiara.

@@LazyDogFarm tiara is perfect for the super fast maturing smaller head to be used for one meal. I call it the one and done. Sometimes the cabbage head is so big that I end up storing half of it in the fridge and I'd rather not if I can help it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. What are you going to do when you're out of watermelons? You might need to go to the store and get some for the ducks

They've started eating figs and muscadines that have fallen on the ground. They just keep finding good snacks.

Unfortunately no seed company will send seeds to Guam I think because the USDA policy, something doesn't make sense Home Depot can get them and 2 or more big or little box stores get them, if there is such a thing as zone 13 that's us, I'll find a way to get them, hope your holidays were outstanding.

I enjoyed this update on fall crops. We are in central Ga, and don't know when to plant. I missed if you said. Do you mean plant now or plant in the fall? Thanks.

Try some premier kale I think it’s also called early Hanover, it’s very good sautéed.

Have you tried growing a collard tree?

Some of my flash collards usually end up looking like a tree after being in the ground 8-9 months. But never grown "tree collards" specifically.
