The BEST 3d Printer That I Won't Use! - Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro 3D Printer Review

Ever since Bambu Lab released their first 3d printers last year, other manufacturers have been scrambling to bring out their own versions of a supper fast, core XY, enclosed machine.
Flashforge are the latest to throw their hat in the ring with their new Adventurer 5M and 5M Pro models.
I've been testing out what the 5M Pro can do for the past couple of weeks so that I can tell you whether I think you should buy it or not.
Correction, you can edit pressure advance if you use Orca Slicer. You just can't edit the actual config files like you can with other Klipper machines

I am the type of person who wants and needs a plug and play 3D printer. I primarily use the 3D printers to make components for the products I make and sell. I first bought 3 Adventurer 3 Pro machines in August 2022 and when the ADV5M Pro became available, I bought one and when I saw how great it was for my use, I bought another one. The 5M Pro makes production of making the components twice as fast as the Adventurer 3Pro machines. In fact, in the future, I plan to replace at least 2 of the Adventurer 3 Pro machines with the Adventurer 5M Pro machines. I have only used Flashforge printers. I am very happy with not tinkering if I don't have to. I am also glad I don't need to build my own 3D printers.

I have been 3d printing for 12 years my Third printer purchased was a Creator Pro which I still use. I checked and compared the Bambu, Creality and the Qidi. I watched this video and then a few others and with my Creator Pro being reliable for the last 8 years decided on the 5M Pro. I have been test printing different filament types since I received my 5M Pro and the quality and speed of the printing is great. I have switched between using Orca and Flashprint to compare and although Orca has more features I have found that setting up my own slicing profiles for each material in Flashprint has gotten faster and better prints. If you load an Orca print from the USB you can still connect with FlashPrint and view the camera. I have had no issues with the build plate the only thing I changed was the PLA bed temp to 60C. I also am amazed at how fast I am able to print TPU. I am printing 3x faster than my other machines and getting great prints. I can not be happier so far with this printer so I decided to come back and comment on your video.

My wife is exactly who this printer is made for. She wants an appliance that prints what she wants then sits quietly on a table until its needed again. She has a Flashforge Finder I bought her in 2018 that she uses 2-3 times a month, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. I leveled the bed once back on Christmas day in 2018 and I've never touched it since. No heated bed, no ABL, a minimalist slicer, and nothing else except what Flashforge decided she needed. It's exactly what she wanted in a printer and works perfect for her needs.

Mine just arrived yesterday, The reason I went with Flashforge is because of customer service and parts availability in my area (they ship directly to my area unlike many other brands). Also, I can still get official parts for my 9 year old Creator X so long term parts support is a plus for me (in exchange for noticeably less community mods/support/third party parts so it's a tradeoff). That said, I do have a Bambu Lab X1C which I love. But most of my older Creator Xs and Creator Pros will be replaced with 5M Pros. The Flashforge formula (their slicer history included) has always been "get up and go and keep going till something wears out/breaks" at the cost of features and customizability. My Creator Pros are now dated and have been a little basic even when they were new but I haven't needed to relevel it in 5 years considering it prints almost 24 hours 5 days a week 12 months a year.

Awesome review. Regarding the "closedness" of the printer: I loved my Ender 3 S1 Pro and the SonicPad thanks to your videos. I always love to play around with stuff, setup my home automation and all these things. I got fed up with prjnts being messed up and after my Ender 3 decided to not print a first layer after being shut down for 6 hours, I was bothered. Tried everything and in the end I gifted myself the Bambu X1C. Yes, spare parts are more expensive. But they are available. Every single piece. Need a ribboncable for your bed? It's available. Need a stepper motor? No Problem. How about a replacement cover for the hotend? Sure. I had bent leadscrews on my Ender 3 S1 Pro. How can I get replacements? I can't. They are not Standard Ender 3. I would have to cut them myself. How? That's my Problem. "Closed system" is a mixed bag. I would love my printer "offline at home" but then I lose app access. But the webcam feed is sometimes bad because the cloud is slow. So yeah... No real opinion on that right now. But the hardware and the machine just freaking work. No messed up first layer. Just print and go. And this to me is bliss because I need to move the printer to the basement (third floor appartment) due to space requirements. So it MUST be reliable and remote controlled. And my Ender with a Sonicpad was not thst trustworthy for me.

I have Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro for qute a while and I can honestly tell that this is the best printer in it's league. In fact it can easily compete with much more expensive Bambu printers. Swappable hotends are great - no more troublesome cleaning (and clogs) after changing from PETG to PLA. I have a different nozzles for every material type and that is perfect. Print quality and speeds are superior. Very good and polished product. There is really no comparision to any Creality trash. I like to tinker in the printers I use but with 5M Pro I don't have to - because everything just works and does the job. Right next to it I have Voron 2.4 that is for playing around.

I seriously considered buying this printer but the price of the nozzles put me right off and then I found out about the wifi only working with the Flashforge slicer and was so glad I didn't buy it, of course its bound to get hacked and vanilla Klipper flashed to it but I am not prepared to wait for that, I ended up buying the X1 Carbon, I have been printing for over a decade starting out with a Mendel 90 kit I have also bought 7 Creality machines and have had to mod them to get them working correctly, I got quite into modding printers and ended up building a Pro 3D V-King 400 from self sourced best quality parts and I built a beast of a machine running RepRap on a Duet 3., since getting the X1C all I have had to do is print a few clips to take out some bad angles in the reverse Bowden tubes of the AMS, and not having to tinker is like a breath of fresh air!

I'm honestly shocked by how good this printer is for it's price point. I picked it up to compliment my P1S and I'd say it's on par with it. I mostly make functional non-cosmetic prints (optical component testing set-ups, brackets, storage options, etc.) and it has been wonderful for this purpose as I don't really need a larger volume size for the types of things I print.. I tried a K1C but didn't really enjoy the experience so returned it and picked this up.

I’m sort of in between plug-in/play and hobby user. I am a big supporter of open source hardware and software. My concern with this otherwise very nice looking printer is that new software features will not be supported, especially after FF moves on to a new model and that prices and availability of parts will be similarly limited. At work I have seen proprietary systems die these sort of deaths.

After moving thebcable away from the fan, it was a lot better but all of these faster machines need quite a lot of cooling so there will be fan noise. The only way to avoid it really is to print slower and reduce the fan speeds.

As someone with a couple Enders on a Sonic Pad (with help from you!) and now a Bambu P1S owner I agree with your sentiments on these new machines. I'm loving the P1S and it is cranking out great prints right out of the box, but there are some basic QOL stuff it just doesn't have (yet anyway) due to it's locked down software. Want to reprint a file you previously printed? You gotta walk up to the printer and do that from the tiny screen. There is no going the file list in the Machine tab in Orca and telling it to reprint remotely. Also macros would be awesome. My Enders are using KAMP which is so much better than having to probe the entire bed every print. It really is the little things.

My mistake. What I should have said is that you can't edit Pressure Advance if you use Flashprint as you would need to if you want to send g-code and use the camera which is what I did for most of my testing. You can edit a field called 'Linear Advance' which is a Marlin feature. It was inconclusive what this actually changed if anything.

As for not being able to tinker with the firmware.. i have never felt the urge of tinkering with the firmware of my 2D printer either.. 😆 thinking of the 3D printer as a CNC machine.. i dare to pose the question, Can you modify the firmware of any CNC machine except 3D printers?.. NO.. on some machines you can write your own Macro's, even to such an extent that you can basically write your own programming language.. for me, that is important because i don't want to depend solely on CAM software (like a slicer is for a 3D printer), I want to be able to just key in some code, and get a part AT the machine, instead of needing a 2D or 3D Computer drawing to generate the code.. But that is because of the way i learnt to use these CNC machines.. For Complex parts, a CNC Mill is just like a 3D printer in reverse, you start out with a hunk of material, and cut away what you don't need, and programming that with CAM software is almost as easy as running a 3D File through a slicer, But sometimes, you need a simple part, of which there is no drawing.. you decide how to make it, and program the operations as needed to the dimensions you just measured with Calipers.. a 3D printer must just be that for me, a "Printer" i.e Open a file in the slicer, like the preview and printer properties for a 2D print, just set everything, apply and print.. Wether that is over the Network, or walking over with a USB stick doesn't matter for me.. You will have to check if there's the right filament in there, and enough to print your part anyway.. for me it is just like any other CNC machine..

Just a Bambu X1C clone. Like the print head (which was not expensive despite what was said in the video) but not worth extra cost. Bambu is also a closed system, but not once have I had to adjust the default print configuration to get good print jobs. Not saying Bambu is perfect. But it's close enough that I wouldn't bother with this one.

I think Flash Forge markets this printer towards beginners and mainly schools/businesses. While I understand customizing Klipper can be useful for many people, allowing people to freely change parameters over a network would be a nightmare for a school or business.

I'm in the market for a 3D printer and this was near the top of my list but after this review, I don't think I will go with it. Their restrictions of what you can and cannot do with it is a big turn off. I don't like the "Apple" style of restrictions on a product I buy and own. If I buy it, I want to do whatever I want with it. If I mess it up, that is on me. I don't need a manufacturer trying to protect me from myself with a printer.

I have been a tinkerer of 3D Printers for a few years now and I am getting on a bit. Once I have a printer dialled in that is it. I send the file it prints it. As time goes on I am getting less and less enthusiastic to tinker when it does not print. All those hours spent fixing this, changing that are behind me. Having a machine that does almost everything fresh out of the box is looking more and more attractive to me these days. I was all excited to buy the Pro then Ricky got to the restrictions Flashforge has imposed on its customers. I am gutted. What they have done is stupid and counter-productive. Stupid because we are all being treated as if we are morons. Counter-productive because I will not be buying one due to the stupid restrictions. So, my hunt continues.

Thank you for the review. This is indeed not a printer for me due to the locked up software. First of all I do not buy Apple-like products where one fully relies on what the manufacturer does. If they want they make the machine obsolete in a couple of years. If they make it possible to switch to bare metal Klipper this looks like something for me though (maybe it is hackable already).

The "locked down" mindset is the prime thing keeping me from even considering many of these new printers. I liken it to buying a new car. If the manufacturer says "Sure, you can drive to any address you want but you can only get there by the route we decide and you have to listen to the radio station we program into your presets" I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't be too happy with that. I just outright refuse to pay so much money for a device where they get to maintain so much control over how I use it.

I currently only have a Bambu Lab P1S but trying to converse with other companies for possible reviews. I'm in need of a Larger volume printer atm and really looking at the Neptune 4 Plus, QiDi X Max 3 and the K1 Max. Unlike you , at this point I prefer all the leg work of user experience to be done by the manufacture and only want to tinker if I choose to instead of have too. As my knowledge grows , I'm sure I will expand and try and push the printers more . At this point in my journey, Id prefer to be as Plug and Play as possible. Needing to go to the printer so much took this printer off the list for me. I AM probably the sort of target audience because i'm in the market for a "just works" printer, but as my computer and printer aren't even on the same floor - that includes not babysitting it. The really sad thing is that flashforge and all the other box shifter manufacturers could have made something like this years ago but instead they chose to just keep shipping the same old boxes with 10 year old tech, and the public was happy to keep buying that garbage. When Vorons came out flashforge could have said - wow nice tech lets copy that and make our printers better but instead they said, nah DIY printers are no thread to our box pushing lets keep going with the Adventurer 3s and other garbage. This is the reason i would never buy a flashforge or a creality etc now is they are lazy and will keep ship you crap if you wil buy it. The massive success of Bambu has put a fly in their lazy business models and I will reward bambu with my custom every time, for being true innovators.
