I don't see anything special about this printer. Just looked at the specs. Its basically a formlabs with projector curing. Nice click bait tho.....but this changes nothing in 3D printing. This closed system turns any professional away. All my old closed system "professional printers" (including formlabs) are paper weights now - because they could not keep up with resin development. As a professional you never want to limit yourself to resin brands. Especially looking at the last few years. All resin printers are essentially the same....curing resin in a vat against a glass screen. From an engineering point of view, they should concentrate on print profiles for a wide array of resin manufacturers out of the box. That would actually be "professional". If they open up to other resins, I may consider buying the printer.

I basically agree with all of this I always approach my videos from the perspective of a home user hence the title. Most hobbyists won’t have heard of/ ever used a Form Labs machine, but the new Form 4 has shifted to LCD now too. For the hobby printing space there is lots of innovation here, outside of the form labs machines I can’t think of another machine with similar specs, happy to be enlightened though. Ref resins, I agree

Closed source printers will never appeal to a big part of the community, but I can see how the idea appeals to a lot of people at the same time because a lot of people just want to make things and they don't care about buying proprietary filament and resin. They care about making a print the way they see it on the photos online, or they care about their prototypes coming out exactly as they want them to be. I have designed and built printers since 2012 and recently I also went to buy a printer that's not open source, just because I wanted a machine that does the things I want to do better than what most 'open source' and DIY printers offer. And the best part is that the filament still isn't proprietary. With a little tweaking, it just works. Oh the time I spent on fixing my DIY printers... Time I can never get back. And on the one hand, yes, I also learned so much from doing that, but I've not been able to apply this knowledge in my working life, it's all 'hobbyism' :D
@RisingApe

Yup, this about sums it up.
@HunterMayer

Which I think is the point of this video. You're telling you manufacture if they want to be part of this community they need to consider giving us the ability to participate at the level that hobbyist participate. Or make it so that it's possible to crack it open without breaking a warranty kind of thing.

hp has been making 3d printers for about a decade, and make excellent systems. they sell to the industrial market. its called multi-jet fusion printing. there are lots of printing techniques using inkjet heads, multi-jet, binder-jet, and material jet techniques. Material jet systems like from stratasys j series and mimaki, can do full color process, with per voxel color, opacity , and durometer, in one shot. the cheapest of these types of machines is about 30 grand. that will come down over time. material jet will be the tech that brings printing as an appliance. hp actualy had a full color muilti jet but they killed that line- they had two teams with two completely different product lines in the space and killed one off (arguably the wrong one, the multicolor one). hp's printers use inkjet heads to apply binding material on top of a powder nylon process in a similar but different process to binder jet. not stuff you can run at home. the stratasys and mimaki ones shoot resin out of an inkjet. this stuff is widely used to make things like surgical training dummies and architectural models and the parts are absolutely crazy.

@@AnotherNewManGaming Ah ic. They have failed to get into this space... but not without wanting/researching the possibility. The worst part will be when the big companies lobby and start to push out the little guys who can't handle the overhead of regulatory pressure and lock-ins (hp or otherwise.) My knowledge of the HP mission is hearsay and inadmissible in court: but I asked some engineers that run in my circles about this... A couple engineers over the decades from this area in HP had bits to share (all for the price of a beer... or two...) They have/are trying to get into this consumer space (like they have with the laser and jet printers... by controlling the medium used to print.) The space is all still too volatile for a business their size (they won't be allowed to take the risks... again, reminder, this is second hand information) I am told they can't get their tech to scale reliably at those cost points... yet... We'll see! eh! ;D Its been half a decade since I have hung out with those folks though... So its old hearsay at that.

I am pretty sure that if bespoke resin and proprietary systems become the norm, we will see plenty of companies pop up with a variety of workarounds. For example, I buy printer cartridges for my epson ink jet that are not OEM, and pay about 1/2. I think that 3D printing is still very much in its infancy and I am very excited to see the future of it.

It’s a combo of all that, together in one packages, from the hardware that is top tier, to the sensors and software on the machine which take any guesswork out of set up to the software on the cloud/ desktop which automates the entire orientation/ support/ slice. To the integration of the resins/ wash/ cure it’s all really slick. Other printers do some of this this is the first that combines them. Other than that, it’s not that amazing ;)

Fantastic job, and I agree with your assessment of these products. They make a lot of sense when you compare them to Formlabs, but absolutely falls flat for us hobbyists. Something else worth noting that gives me great concern for their ecosystem; is the reliance on a login and connection to a cloud server to slice prints for the Ultracraft Reflex. If Heygears don't add the "Pro" mode you mentioned, in addition to removing the login requirement on the slicer, then this printer may straight up be unusable one day if for whatever reason that server goes offline. Happens all the time. Like how many video games have suffered this form of digital decay and are just straight up unplayable now? Edit: one more point I'd like to add, is that even for most small businesses who are buying resin printers for a production line would be better off buying 3 budget printers vs this thing. If one goes down you still have two pumping out parts while you sort out maintenance.
@RisingApe
@RisingApe 5 месяцев назад
Yeh, both really valid points, I also worry about the need to login too, it’s too easy to turn around and increase to cost or insist on a subscription model. Phone and TV companies do this all the time, again is more normal for “business” models but that is not the ideal destination for hobby machines.

I’m actually not so sure about this anymore, 6 months ago I would have absolutely agreed with you, but since then they have made some really positive changes to the slicer and the resins available (I have a video coming on this) and honestly it’s become my go to printer, it just works, I want to print something I drop some files in click one button, it then orientates, supports and slices the model, then I just send to the printer. With 0 mucking about, I have already saved DAYS of time and so I can absolutely see how this machine would pay for itself if you are busy. I’d love to chat further though, perhaps not in the comments though 😝

@@RisingApe This is why I'm seriously considering this. It would be my first 3D printer so it's a lot so spend for sure, but there's huge appeal in something that is plug and play. I want to be making artifacts, not wasting time learning the intricacies of levelling, dialling in resins and exposure times. I don't need yet another tinkering hobby, I need something that'll just plug in and print my pieces. Ive held off getting a 3d printer for just this reason, and the space is only just getting there.

Hmm? Something like 2D printers where there's only a few companies to choose from? I hope at the very least the amount of brands will not dwindle down to five and hopefully some parts will be universal for easy replacement. I know that FDM nozzles and build plates are fairly universal. I recently bought a new kid on the block brand FDM printer on Amazon called Ankermake. It's a good printer that is fairly inexpensive. I plan to hold onto that printer as long as I can and watch the smoke settles.

How much would it cost to print a 6-hour object, from a print-farm business? I imagine having someone else do the print is going to be the better option if if you're only going to do a print every once. Also, it doesn't have Lidar , and more material support like the X1C, but any thoughts which HeyGear printer is closest to the Bambu P1S in terms of performance? BTW, any thoughts on the Infimech TX printer?
@RisingApe
@RisingApe 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the comments, for the cost it depends, professional printers will charge anything from £20-30 all the way to hundreds of pounds (i got some dinosaurs printed for a few videos ago they were around £70 each but printed on a FormLabs system so the resin for that is £125/l) It’s not comparable to an FDM printer like an X1C or a P1S as it’s different tech. The closest competitor is something like Form Labs. Hobbyists should look towards something like a GK2 if you need a heater or if you want speed perhaps the new Saturns? Last one if you’re just printing once or twice, save your money and buy resin models from artists, shop somewhere like PK PRO/ Noble Knight or El Greco.

I was thinking of buying this printer as I'm a novice and this would be my very first 3D printer, I know nothing about 3D printing so if this machine can do everything for me that I'm not able to do because i'm just not that knowledgeable then that for me has got to be a good thing, I was going to use different resins in their bottle to see if I could use cheaper resins and if that works then again that could only be a good thing, I really can't do all that dialing in thing and doing my own supports for my models which by the way have been done for me so I have to trust the people that have produced the stl files, I want to produce some 1:76 scale model buses and I really think that this printer would help me do that even though the printer has its downsides like trying to lock you into buying their own proprietary resins and of course the price but in time I may get around the resin thing and the Machine may pay for itself if I opt to sell the model buses that I make but now that I've seen your video I'm now a little bit unsure?. Please tell me why you think I should buy one, I mean making model buses maybe a bit more profitable than making little model soldiers - right??.

Hi Chris, the best way I can put it is it’s the best 3D printer on the market right now. If you have the budget to run it, resin and all you will love using it. The concerns around being locked in are not a problem in a commercial setting or for use cases where you need precision parts easily. Think of it like buying an iPhone or an android phone. If you use the link in the description you get $100 off and a free resin too so that’s worth having!

With Elegoo introducing the Saturn 4 Ultra with it's tilting mechanism, every single resin printer now has to compete with elegoo for fastest print times, ease of use, and frequency of failures compared to the tilting vat mechanism.

While the S4U is a great innovation I terms of ease of use/ reliability/ build quality and updates it doesn’t come close to the reflex. The video wasn’t sponsored by HeyGears at all, they sent me a machine, that’s why I needed a sponsor like flex spot to cover the cost of production

Great video and great points - I'd also really prefer if 3d printing doesn't turn into the hellscape nightmare that is trad 2d printers. I still hope the likes of Elegoo etc start taking some of the better design cues from these kinds of printers though, we've seen a bit of that with the Saturn 4 release recently so I'm hopeful the next few generations of printers will innovate without closing everything off

A very sad day if these companies make it there own product not fitting any other pieces from other creators machine parts. No wonder our world is just not advancing, because inventors sell there ideas to corporations that only see $ signs. This company seems to be going like Microsoft. It is never shared with the population unless only on there site, needing purchase or updates for hardware/software. Where are the inventors that can come forward publicly first and seek our approval to share our tax dollars in bringing your product to everyone. Via the peoples industrial set ups around the countries that will produce these patented ideas for us all. Our futures have been stolen by big Corp, controlling factors and greed……

I'm not going to buy any HeyGears printer as long as they lock its usage behind a proprietary software that only lets you print with a internet connection to their servers and locks the settings to only work with HeyGears resins only... nope.. not even if they sell them half the price.
@RisingApe

I get what you are saying once in a six side makes some interesting points but the resin argument is almost irrelevant as I showed in my video you can easily use 3rd party resins and the internet connection thing is kinda relevant but there are so many programs you can’t use without an internet connection that it kinda feels a bit of a BS argument too. There is some waste but it’s minimal, if you are just changing resin type it can be filtered and put back into the pot, if you are using customs I would recommend buying some black bottles to keep them in. In terms of cleaning the vat, perhaps 5 minutes.

As someone who plans to start up his own 3D printing studio, this machine is more than ideal. It is perfect. I don't mind the closed ecosystem. The quality of life features it provides overshadow this limitation. I was unaware about this printer's existence until a friend from Germany bought it and he never looked back since. However..... At the moment, HeyGears ships to only a few countries and mine (Greece) isn't among them which means that if they don't expand their logistics and shiping list by the time I start up my studio then yeah.... I will have to go to my plan b (Saturn 4 Ultra, GKTwo or GKThree Ultra).

I don't get the dig at Bambu. I'm an FDM guy, yes, with a X1C. I need something that works, not a tinkering project. The X1C delivers that. It's an appliance that works. I send it a job in the garage with a high degree of confidence, that it will just print. Open source, sure, whatever, they have opened up the firmware if you want to go off-warrantee. No idea how many use this option, but it's nice it's there. Filament? go for your life, I regularly plumb the depths of Amazon using weird non-Bambu filament. I do wish the Nozzles were a more common design, but there are now 3rd party high flow ones coming out. So I'd actually hold up Bambu as the right way to do it. Innovate, push the industry forward, but open up what you can.
@RisingApe
@RisingApe 4 месяца назад
I’m not really having a dig at Bambu, kudos to them, but I worry it’s the begin of a trend that is highly commercially successful of moving into essentially a subscription model, it’s not difficult to imagine rfid chips being added to Bambu labs filament reels in future and the entire system being closed. Like I say, more an observation about industry trends than a specific comment about one brand
@benp7328
@benp7328 4 месяца назад
It's definitely a concern, but I think we passed the point of maximum danger with bambu a few months back. They clamped down on an exploit that allowed people to root the x1 and install custom firmware. Then after consultation they released a new version that allowed you to opt out of warrantee support, and have a boot loader for custom firmware. The bambu spools already have RFID chips, that's how they track usage on spools. But there's been no attempt to lock users in. So it looks like they are choosing to do the right thing.

Hope you cover elegoo's new printer soon, aside from that Great video! Cheers!

Thanks, what do you see as a backwards step? In almost every way this is the most advanced printer I have ever used, do you mean the Saturn 4? I have some friends who have tested it, other than the tilting vat there is nothing crazy about the Saturn unless I’m missing something (I haven’t tested it) and god forbid you spill resin near that mechanism…
@SlowRkers
@SlowRkers 5 месяцев назад
@RisingApe The fact that you need to manually Level it and having proprietary resin is a step backwards in my personal opinion. Especially so when a number other flag ship consumer printers have auto levelling and doesnt limit itself in resin usage. I mean for that price point one would at least expect at auto levelling. 🤷‍♂️
@RisingApe
@RisingApe 5 месяцев назад
@@SlowRkers you don’t have to manually level it, it comes levelled, if the machine gets knocked out by a print fail/ vibration or similar, you can level it manually (albeit with the sensors telling you exactly what to do, even down to which what to tighten the screws) though. Agreed, the plus points, the machine prints very detailed minis with excellent tolerances, I was able to assemble multi part resin kits with minimal cleanup, plus a variety of bits like the auto fill and low resin detection, as well as the excellent heater and mixing. The bad bits the cost and the proprietary slicer/resin, others have proven you can swap out resin though. Basically it’s a use case thing.
