I review the 50mm Sigma Art f1.4 lens and show real world results from my trip up to Scotland. This is the best midrange lens on the market and I explain why.

I love my 50mm Sigma Art, so much that I still haven't upgraded to the GM. The GM 1.2 is very enticing, but at that price it's hard to justify the purchase. The Sigma is already so good.

I have been using the 35mm 1.4 Art lens for a few years now and it is one of my favourites. If I was going for another 50mm, as a Canon user, I would probably buy a second hand EF 50mm f1.2 but the 50mm Art would be tempting.

Hi Mark, Really love your videos. Which version of the lens is this? Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN ART or Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART?
@SilatShooter
@SilatShooter 2 года назад
While I agree the Sigma is super lens and a great alternative to the Sony 50mm f1.2 especially when comparing prices. But I'd be curious how you find this Sigma stacks up to other 50mm closer in price to it. My only issue with it, is the size. I'd only use for dedicated shooting sessions, and not a carry-around lens.

FYI: Diffraction makes a lens softer at small apertures. In the future, try to keep the aperture between f8-f11 for sharpness tests as past that, diffraction usually kicks in, softening the image.

I must be unlucky! I've owned the 50mm Sigma Art, also the 20mm, and the 35mm Sigma Art. The 50mm had temperamental "sticky" focus, the 20mm used to fog up internally at the slightest whiff of humidity and the 35mm shuck itself apart. They all hunted in low light. I spent more time nursing and calibrating them than using them. I agree, they're tack sharp and clinical, but not trustworthy or reliable for longevity compared to name brands. I hope their quality control has improved in recent years

If the lens is bad, send it back!
@harvymckiernan93
@harvymckiernan93 2 года назад
@@KaiTiuraAs easy as that! And yes, I did eventually! It taught me a valuable lesson! Don't go cheap when professionally shooting. Pay the extra and stay with native brands instead. After that, I never looked back and my confidence grew. All 3 Sigma's mentioned previously were purchased within a couple of days of each other. Brand spanking new. When the issues became evident, I was in denial because I heard many folk talking about calibrating them with a USB dock. So being a new style of lens, I purchased the USB dock and I gave Sigma a chance. After a lot of faffing, I decided I had enough evidence, "that it wasnt me," and they were returned. I didn't want to replace them, as all three had the same or similar generic issues. I also owned 3 camera bodies at the time to rule out any possible camera issues or user error. I also had plenty of native glass to use as a benchmark too. I can see the appeal with Sigma, because when they're tack sharp, the quality is stunning. So anyone who has time on their hands, or has a slower pace to photography, I'm sure the shots are absolutely fantastic. However from my own personal experience with Sigma, for fast paced weddings, event photography, and low light shooting. They're simply not reliable or responsive enough. Especially when treasured moment last only a split seconds. So, as with every photographer out there, we base our brand trust on recommendations, experience, nostalgia, or from a good or bad experience. Unfortunately for me, the extra weight didn't justified for the level of reliability I was getting.

Sigma all the way! I got my Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro years ago, brand new, as it was up there with lenses twice its price and I was on a budget. Of course, nowhere near L lenses costing many times more but very decent still, especially at that MSRP of 219 Euros including a hood and soft pouch. Now I got a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for the same exact reason. I love them both. I've been looking for a proper 50mm now as I really hate my EF 50mm 1.8 II "nifty fifty" and have been drooling over this Sigma and the Sony APS-C lineup as well. I might even get a used Sony A6000 series body just to pair it with the 30 and 56mm Sigma 1.4 lenses for anything other than my bird photography setup on the 7D Mark II as that will be a very compact combo that I can always have with me. P.S. Scotland is incredibly beautiful! I have to visit.

I own the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens and use it with my Canon R5. It's an incredible lens! I paid $570 for it. Among the best money I've spent on a lens to date, and I own a 70-200 2.8, an RF 100-500, A Sigma 14-24, a Sigma 60-600 Sport as well. Sometimes you have to sacrifice weight for quality, and this one does a little due to its heft, just like the 14-24 (another crazy good lens!) but it's well worth it. The end result is what it's all about, and this lens is stunning.

Sigma lenses represent the midpoint between perfection and infuriation: their quality control is bad, but when the lenses are good, they are exceptionally so. The predecessor to this lens (50mm f/1.4 EX DG) was also an absolute gem of a portrait lens. I used it on weddings and it never, ever missed a beat, producing the best photos I have ever captured.

The ETHIC reserves is, that this kind of influencer-stance is highly questionable. ok I allready know the defense : "It's only my point of view", or "it is to the best of my knowledge" etc. But the point is, that these films dont even encourage viewers to compare their point of view, by not even MENTIONING alternatives (slin this case samyang, voightlander, 55mm, 45mm, etc). Granted, at f1.4 the choice is smaller, and when excluding manual focusing lenses: even fiewer. But state it. Perhaps say why You dismissed the planar AF f1.4 - becaus that would have bekome an interesing because a personal statement. And mention that a DG DN version of 'yours' is to be expected (either f1.2 or f1.4) by now any time. And, SAY that 'testing' is way inferior to comparing (in the same conditions). After all; it's those who you consider do need orientation tho whom you talk to. So don't create darkness by shining light on one thing only, because that way it's dogmatic and thus not helpful (to give a fish instead of the fishing ability); that's what makes the messenger more important then the message. With respect to newees : do rather redirect viewers to view Dustin Abott's extensive reviews AND comparisons, don't try reinvent the weal, because you instead can say why you, mortal personal, find Your best affinity with that Sigma, showing thus that one can each go ouer own ways, without technical considerations that are. as is, just off. (BTW, the first 90 seconds are just packed with examples of highly questionable blabla. Why ? the hell. As you can tell, I'm so tired of these "lets be floppy as long as it looks cool RU-vid business.)

Often more times than not too much is said without any guidance, example or execution of how to go around what one is trying to achieve, if you catch my drift... I had this lens and replaced it with the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8, which had a better contrast, but worse bokeh, and later with the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4, which is optically better wide open than the Sigma and the Zeiss 55. But I have compared the Sigma with a super expensive Zeiss Otus and from f/4 upwards the Sigma is better than the Otus. So at higher appertures it is a stellar lens. Wide open is very good but not excellent. I use other sigma lenses which are brilliant, like the 35mm DG DN, the 85mm (first version) and the 24-70. All are one of the best in class.
