Love this, I bought a Hammer 88 last summer and it’s one of the best music gear purchases I ever made. Funny enough I love the simplicity of the original Hammer 88 with no controllers or pads. Instead I simply added a LaunchPadPro Mk3 and a LaunchControlXL to go with it, so all set. Great to see them expanding the Hammer range, look forward to your comparison video. PS. Yes, the Hammer 88 comes with that same music stand too! 🎹❤️👍

Just look at the M-Audio that Earth Wind & Fire keyboard player had in his keys line-up when they did the 2004 tour with Chicago He had Yamaha's Kurzweil's and M-Audio 88 Keyboard contoller that right there is a statement . EW&F band don't mess around when it comes to quality Instruments

I'm tempted... the SL88 is lighter but fatiguing (tried it, my wrists hurt after a while), while this one is heavier but hopefully less fatiguing but I saw you lifting it quite easily. I also noticed that, in the editor, the main encoder seems completely programmable! I'm also worried about the durability. I bought a KeyStation 49 many years ago, used it very sparingly and the pitch bender started sending wrong data.

Ha! I just got my SL88 Grand and it's obsolete... bwah bwah. I'm loving it so much though, that I'm going to hang on to it for a while. That M-Audio does look pretty great though.

The plastic knobs and the lights make it look cheap, but it’s more expensive then the non-Pro. Also it’s a totally different keybed, Graded and mono aftertouch. If they put that in the non-Pro that would be great.

You can change the velocity curve for the SL88 through software to make it more responsive/easier to play

Are you certain it’s the same keybed as Hammer 88? It felt completely different when I tried it in the store. Sorta like the Fatar TP/100 vs TP/40 - both nice but for different purposes.

Compared it to the hammer 88 non pro side by side in a music store. It' s TOTALLY different keybed. First of all it's graded(weighted lighter on higher notes and heavier on lower notes) on white AND black keys, not like some other keyboards (ex. on yamaha p125 only whites are graded) Keys feel firm and better made and than hammer88, which feels more wobbly and bouncier. But I've read hammer88 build quality is bad and wears out in a few months. So I don't know if I could trust this 'Pro' quite yet..

Hi John Mike, I would love to hear how you feel about a Korg D1. I had a Yamaha p90 for a while, but it broke down. Plus, the keys are heavy weighted. I know you like the SL88, the one you painted red. Which made me want one also, but I would like something lighter so I can practice longer. Could the Korg D1 be what I'm looking for with midi in and out. I'm with you on the clicking and clacking. I want a solid board with a smooth feel and little as possible finger noise! I have Yamaha MX88 and like the feel, but it's really not that durable. I've replaced some keys already after only having it 5 or 6 months, and the keys come in a strip together. I'm hoping the Korg D1 has a feel that's very close to that. Maybe you can help point me in the right direction! Sorry for this book!!! Thanks Carl

I am not a musician but from I hear and learn at this time my choices are between M-Audio Hammer 88 Pro and the M-audio hammer 88. Is it woth the $$ diference? or should I save more ad go for a Native Instruments S88 MKII. Please help

Hello John! Just a question... I need a 88 master keyboard with a good keybed, expression pedal (better if it has 2 exoression pedals connectors!) sliders and knobs. I don't need daw integration, I don't need pads and I don't need heavy or big ones. It should be portable. I should use it as a master, but maybe some old synths or digital piano could do the job? Maybe an old Oberheim? Or Kurzweil/Roland/Yamaha? I will use it with mainstage and some different libraries only for live gigging. Oh... Now the question become difficult. It should be also cheap... 😅 The keystation 88 has no sliders. The arturia essential and nektar lx88+ has no exoression pedal. Any suggestions in that price range?

I didn't even know this board was coming! Might have to cancel my Km88 pre order. Sweetwater has the 88 pro up for pre order for $800, kinda steep but it looks solid!

The KM88 is superior with the key action. It does lack controls though. Personally, I prefer a two keyboard setup. One as the master controller, the other for the key action. I’m getting the KM for that reason. But, other people may prefer an all-in-one. I totally respect that.

I believe the keyed is an updated version from the regular Hammer 88 . Also, let me know where you can get this for $500 I will split the $300 savings with you :-) I know the $500 was a reference to the original Hammer 88 .

I have a Roland Fantom G8, I've been looking at this hammer action keyboard as it'll be my replacement. I often use Kontakt plug-ins that imo sound way better than what my Fantom offers. still though, idk if this'll be a way to go 😅

Looking forward to the full review. I have an Axiom Pro 61, and was frustrated with M-Audio for not supporting future driver updates (Hypercontrol), in fact, you cannot find them anymore.

I have the Hammer 88. The Hammer 88 Pro looks like a good replacement for my MPK-88 I keep at church, but the $300 premium over the base 88 seems a bit much. We’ll see what the resale market for MPK-88 is maybe 🤔

Thanks for the great review John! I I know you didn't sign up for tech support but...I just bought the Hammer 88 Pro and the EX-P Expression pedal. The EX-P has no effect whatsoever when plugged into the Expression jack, regardless of the polarity switch position. No help at all from m-audio. Wondering if there is an additional driver for the EX-P but can find no info. anywhere.

Get a replacement instrument under warranty ASAP. keep doing it until they give you an answer or you get a working one. they usually reply when your 5th replacement under warranty gets returned. ;-) just kidding, but in all seriousness: I heard of other quality control issues and M-Audio not responding at all. It's what keeps me from getting one now. It would be a perfect keyboard if it was perfect, but who wants to have trouble like that.

@@couchcamperTM Thanks for your reply. I finally found in the manual that you have to have the Expression pedal in the "up" position when turning on the keyboard for it to be recognized. However, given that m-audio support was non-existent, I returned the Hammer 88 and am going to try a Nektar GXP88. I realized I really don't need a complicated controller as I do everything in pro tools. And I can't imagine Nektar's support being worse than m-audio.

@@hmac66 I got the Nektar 88keys and after several months the pitch bend would transpose by itself.. I tried to fix it and messed up the whole controller, so I eventually bought M audio hammer pro.

How is this when only having an Ipad Pro? Because I guess all software included with the keyboard doesn’t work on the Ipad. Could you - using GarageBand on Ipad - achieve the same results as when using it connected to a windows pc? What options do you loose?

It's not accurate. The actions here graded. On the regular hammer 88 is not graded. (Graded means the left side is heavier than the right. ) And after touch you've got here and not on the regular hammer 88.

Hello again my friend, please, can I ask you? I bought the hammer 88 pro, it's great, but there's only one problem, I was playing a kontakt library with it, and inside cubase 12, in win 10. and suddenly a note was left hanging. I have read that there are more people with this problem, has it happened to you? Please, I would like to know, I have time to return it. I tried to update the firmware but it doesn't work, I did the steps, but the screen stays on "updating" and the application on the PC doesn't work, I press "update" and it doesn't update, I get a message telling me to connect the m audio, and it's connected haha. this is crazy Please, can you give me your opinion? thanks very much buddy.

Sorry I replied to the wrong comment...I don’t even use them except to listen in mono...I mix on my adams which are seen off screen..the Yams are pointed at my chest off axis...so it’s not even there with the intention of trying to hear my stereo field...just there as a reference

Hi, I have the Oxygen Pro 61 and will return it. Impossible to set faders and knobs in Reaper. I managed to get the faders to work but there is no way to get the knobs to work. The user guide doesn't help. The Preset Editor doesn't help. The M.audio support does not respond quickly and when it does respond it gives no useful information. I don't want to spend 10 days figuring out how to make something I paid for work. Does the 88 have the same configuration problems? And since you have one available, could you make a video showing that both faders and knobs work in reaper? It would be very useful. Thanks so much for your videos.

Lol same! My control room is right under the kitchen lol...My wife stays at home with the kids! 🤦🏾‍♂️😂 so they are always home and always in the kitchen...they are walking through as I’m typing this! 😂😂...we have a upstairs(3 story home) so I just make them all go up upstairs whenever I’m recording with a client or recording videos...takes a lot of planning but we make it work...

I so dislike this controller. The led screen has gone all blurry and I cannot read it (the contrast is all off and all the words are blurry) , it does ghost triggers that change parameters without me touching anything ,It’s bulky and heavy. I wish I had not bought it. Going to sell it and get something else
