6 Reasons to consider the Studio Display: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fRTgjjoYEV4.html Fastest Thunderbolt SSD for Mac: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TNymDSjkfjY.html
EVERYBODY is missing the point of the apple displays, namely full 4K footage with the ability to see your editing and compositing and CC controls. Can't do that with a 4K display.
One of the reasons I didn't want a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (especially from apple) is that many years ago I kept dealing with "connection lost" several times a day that I just never want to deal with ever again. Logitech product with receiver works the best, even though you lose a couple of ports it's worth it.
If they switched to USB C I could handle the keyboard and trackpad, but lightning is stupid for anything other than an iPhone (still waiting on a USB C iPhone too 😅)
Reconsider. both the Mac keyboard (I was given the basic keyboard and the numeric keyboard I use the basic for my personal use, and the numeric for work). I've switched quickly, there's no pairing issues whatsoever. If you bought a 2020 or later Mac, check it out.
@@TechGently I might consider their keyboard one day, but I already stretched my budget extra thousand dollars (originally aimed for a mac mini, but was waiting to see if there was a beefed up version), and couldn't justify over CAD$400 for recommended Apple keyboard and mouse purchase at this time ;D I gotta use whatever is laying around.
Great video! I have a music studio in my basement where I teach drum lessons, livestream, and do recording projects for others. I absolutely LOVE my Mac Studio Max! It's a beast. I bought the base model, because I really didn't feel like waiting an extra six weeks for an upgraded version. And, I didn't really want to spent too much past $2k. I was slightly worried that it wouldn't have enough horsepower to do what I needed, but when everything was up and running properly, my fears were completely assuaged. I have open, at any given time, OBS with five cameras connected, Logic Pro which may or may not be recording,, Music, Moises (a music app), and maybe I forgot to close Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. This machine does not even blink. It doesn't care about any superfluous programs, because it's got that much processing headroom. The first two "performance cores" are spiked, but the rest of the cores are all happily idling along, waiting for something meaningful to come down for them to crunch. For monitors, I'm using two; a Samsung 50" for my "behind the drumkit" display, and a 75" Samsung in front of the drumkit as a "portal to the outside world". I got them both at Costco, and together they cost me far less than one of those high falutin' Apple monitors. I may be losing some functionality, but I don't know what that is, because what I've got is working so well. I'm really tempted to pick up one of the Thunderbolt 4 docks from OWC (eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-ministack-stx) with a 2TB SSD for extra storage. That way I can get rid of the stacks of loose HDDs and SSDs I have dangling here and there in the nether regions of my computer rig. As far as this computer goes, I wouldn't change a thing. I may run into a processing conundrum down the line and find the need for a Mac Studio "Ultra". When the need arises, we'll cross that bridge, and maybe Apple will be up into the M3 or even M4 chips by that time.
My Mac Studio arrived yesterday, today’s work schedule was several hours of editing……It’s done and I have the rest of the day off. Render times are ridiculously good on Mac Studio.
i ended up going for the studio display. I've had decent benq monitors in the past. But the way the plastic creaks whenever you adjust the screen and how the chassis flexes when you press the side buttons always irked me. Love the solid design of the studio display.
The only thing I would swap out, would be a keyboard. I’m going to buy a keyboard, I’m going to buy a nice mechanical, and keychron has wonderful options that don’t break the bank, so that’s the only thing I would do differently. I already have one that I use for my MacBook, so I would continue just using that.
It's Jerry Pizet again, back to comment regarding purchasing all of your recommendations for my new Mac-Studio M1 Ultra. For the record, Logitek customer support solved the key board problem, but only after setting up a 2nd computer to switch back and forth from. (Luckily I have more than one computer!). Once done, the KB recognizes the Apple Command which is pretty important stuff for Apple users! Can't blame that one on you, but once issue was cleared up - I love the keyboard big time - and the fact I can now switch back and forth for two computers via pressing one key. Okay - you get "10" on the recommendation. More to come!
You confirm what many of us felt about the display .. it's still better to have external monitors. It's most unfortunate that no company seems to want to bring out a 5K monitor that would give us some choice. I shall be waiting to see if something else emerges more suited to my needs. In addition to which, I refuse to pay £400 extra for height adjustment - a feature that should be standard.
@@nlonal Well yes, thanks but it's the only one and probably overpriced as a result. With the way things are headed I'm starting to do more creative work in Windows. I suspect Apple will start making Final Cut and Logic subscription-based having announced this model for iPad. I have Resolve and an Adobe subscription so I may just use Windows and be happy with a 4K monitor that won't have scaling issues.
Hi Jerry Thanks for the video ! Did you try it with the MacBook through any of the 3 ports ( not the thunderbolt) ? because i just got it and it seems only the thunderbolt works to view the MacBook display
Jerry P. here continuing along with the evaluation of ALL your recommendations for my new Mac Studio M1 Ultra. Kanto speakers arrived yesterday and subsequently hooked up. They are awesome, and best speakers I’ve ever attached to any computer in 40+ years. You get 10 on this recommendation.
They are black, but I never considered color when ordering since they won't be seen in my set up. The 32 inch XDS arrives Monday - but not sure when I'll receive case for the 4TB stick (August to Sept delivery was indicated - yuk!). I'll bet you'll get 2 tens for these items anyway.
Gotta change that White USB printer cable to black. I really liked those YU2 while I had them. They lack in the lows so if anyone wants them, I recommend the kanto sub6 to go along with them.
Thanks for the detailed video. Had one comment the USB dongle for the mouse. My experience was the opposite with using a Logitech wireless mouse. USB dongle caused issues DAILY. Not exaggerating. Became a morning ritual at my job to unplug/replug the dongle then restart my Mac until finally connection was stable. Later, switched to bluetooth mouse when we upgraded our Mac Pros to iMacs. No issues. Did the same at home and works great. Anyway, maybe was the dongle, maybe the mouse. Who knows, but thought I would share either way.Cheers!
I recently built a GMMK Pro keyboard in the same silver aluminum with black keys that the new magic keyboard has. It’s not wireless, but it’s never gonna move from my desk (not to mention it weighs as much as my 16” MacBook 😅)
Thank you for the great video @jerryschulze, I just got my first Mac Studio and am concerned that plugging in a host cable from a powered USBC Hub (designed to charge laptops) would damage the Mac Studio. When using a powered hub with your Studio are you plugging a the host cable into the Thunderbolt 4 port with the cable delivering power from the hub?
I recognize I am late to the party but I am wondering how you arranged your desk when you used your PowerBook as a secondary monitor. I am brand new to Mac but have been a computer user since the late 70s. I just bought my PowerBook and have long been a fan of the laptop monitor being under my large external monitor. I am considering adding a small raised deck over the laptop keyboard for my Logitech keyboard and mouse, but would love to hear from anyone who has done this or some other variant on their thoughts before I shell out a couple hundred dollars for this beautiful shelf I am eyeing. Thanks for the thoughts.
That is exactly what I've been using. That keyboard (but in black), that mouse, and that trackpad (in black). Those are really the best accessories. Great advice, instant sub.
Awesome video jerry, could you compare your dell screen with the studio display? how much is the difference between 4k & 5k in a real world test. how much is the difference in backlight bleeding. whats about colors. can you set the Dell to the same colors? that would be a really nice comparison.....cheers
The new apple magic keyboard DOES have an emoji button. It’s at the bottom left and has a globe symbol. Clicking that will bring up the emojis or you can change it to another language if you switch back and forth frequently
i prefer the mx keys keyboard because it not only lights up it also has a number pad as well which is a must needed and wanted feature in keyboards for macs and pcs plus it has alot of other keys as well that your small one does not have and match thart with the mx master pc/mac mouse and its perfect combannantion
thank also for the tip on that enclosure. I was able to get an additional 20$ off today on it. I needed something after I realized my 56Gbps NVME Drive is maxing out on USB C at 10Gbps.......Woooooo Come on 40.....
Very good review !! I wish the Logitech keyboard would come in space gray...as it looks really good.I am using the CalDigit TS4 with my M1Max MBP....it is excellent device. As an alternative to the Kantu, the Vanatoo Transparent Zero speakers are also a great choice.
I bought everything you talked about for my new Mac Studio. I received the Logiteck keyboard first - and it had an issue immediately. Would you believe it doesn't recognize Apple's command key. LOL How is that possible- and so far I see nothing that fixes it. Got any suggestions? Next I bought the 4TB stick - but the enclosure is back logged to Sept. SO what to I do to use it in the mean time? I'll let you know on all the other items as I receive them.
Wow, that's awesome and I am glad it was helpful. Here is an alternative enclosure for the drive. its Thunderbolt 3 instead of USB4 but the speed will be the same on the Mac. geni.us/F2x9OsU Also, that's really strange for the keyboard. Have you installed the Logitech Options software or Logi+ software?
Great video. Thank you for this. I might just pick up the Logitech keyboard. Quick question though. If I chose not to go with the Apple studio display, what webcam would you recommend please?
I am considering going ahead and purchasing the Apple Studio Display to use as a secondary monitor on my 27” iMac Late 2014 iMac 5K. Can you share which cable do I need to purchase to make this connection happen? Thank you in advance for your help!
@@JerrySchulze thanks Jerry, great channel. ps...how would you connect a XDR and two 2015 cinema screens as auxiliary space? would you say its possible?
I love your videos very detailed and well thought out, I have both mac studio - ultra and MacBook pro, and want to seamlessly switch between the two using the same display, looks like going iPad is a good way to go!
@@JerrySchulze sorry for the late reply, going iPad I meant how about using iPad with mac studio, meaning I am using macbook pro 13 with m1 with mac studio ultra lately, and I ended up or forced myself to use mac studio more because of all that power at disposal and macbook only for regular and lightweight tasks which can all be done using an iPad Probably I don' t need macbook at all when M1 is now supported both in iPad pro and iPad Air. Ideally, I want to use the studio display to switch seamlessly between two mac devices using a dock but I believe that is not possible today. But I can at least use iPad for sidecar features
Okay Jerry - my XDS display arrived today - but it never occurred to me it would not have a basic stand included. Needless to say I was surprised - and really don't understand Apple not including one. I put this in the same category as the Logitech keyboard not recognizing Apple's command key - unless you are using their keyboard with 2 or more computers. LOL So what is the right stand to get?
Excellent review Jerry. I simply can't justify the price of a Studio display, even accepting that it provides a higher build quality, and will almost certainly do down the route of Thunderbolt-enabled 4K/5K monitor(s). I do like the Kanto speakers though, especially if the volume is completely controlled from the keyboard.
The MX mouse and Keyboard is fantastic. I like that I can switch between my MAC and Windows PC. I disagree about the monitor. Too expensive and only 27 inch. If it was 32 inch perhaps but I have two Ben Q 32 inch monitors on a set of display arms.
I was looking at those speakers for a smaller desk setup, which I may end up investing in with another desk I have coming in. They seemed to be an alternative to the Audioengine. And agree that those Logitech keyboards are “better” than the magic keyboards due to that key travel alone.
I am so surprised how good this keyboard is. I can't get over it. I love the feel, weight, and the key travel and didn't think I would like one better than Apple's.
Check out the Vanatoo Transparent Zero's just for fun! Small company from Canada made up of two dudes. Really cool technology. I owned their bookshelves and man were they impressive.
I've been using the MX Keys for over a year on a PC and paired it to my new Studio but after a couple of days I bought the new Apple keyboard for touch ID. I like the MX keys better but having touch ID is worth it... at least for now. If you like the MX keys you might try the Logitech G915 TKL. I'm using that on my gaming PC and it's phenomenal! Using MX Master 3 as well on my Studio, can't stand the Apple mouse, just hurts my hand.
Curious about the touch ID thing vs keeping my numerical keyboard and trackpad. Yes I'd lose the touch ID feature but is there any other reason why I can't use my stock keyboard, trackpad and Apple mouse, all in Space Gray? For a display, I have the older Thunderbolt from 2015 and it still works great. Resolution won't be the best but since I work overseas the less I need to mail back the better. When I get back to the States then I can order the better display. Maybe they'll have fixed the poor camera quality by then. Thanks.
Great review. I picked up a Caldigit TB4 element after another of your reviews, it is great. I work off data stored on USB thumb drives (work data) and the speed increase accessing data has increased unbelievably over my old hyperdrive. The number of ports is great and I am using all but 1 already. I was an early adopter of the Airpods Max. I just laugh at all the nay sayers. They are the best I have used and I can confirm all the positives you mentioned about them. I use the MX Master3 mouse and MX keys keyboard. Also the best I have ever used. I like the looks of the mini but I need a number pad, so I stick with the full size. Only downside is the battery on the keyboard doesn't hold a charge as long as it used to. As I move around a lot but still want great sound, I use the Homepods mini's. Small enough that I can put them in my carry on. They can be a bit fussy with a wifi connection but the sound can't be beat for the size. For home I have Audio Engine speakers and the older, larger Homepods, which again, are hard to beat and look great with any Mac setup. Mac Studio will likely be the next purchase, if work and covid ever allow me to get home but right now my base model 16" MBP is working fine. Thanks again!
Hey Jerry, I do a two monitor setup and have a tilt only Studio Display now so if I get a hight adjustable one later, will they line up and can be at the same hight next to each other you think? I do not live near an Apple store to go find out and usually have my Apple gear mailed.
Get a VESA mount. I special ordered as Apple Studio Display with VESA. I bought a wonderful monitor arm online direct from Herman Miller, the model is called “Jarvis” and it has a 14 year warranty. Anyway, I achieved my goal of reclaiming my desk and getting the Mac base out of the way.
@@cruftist thanks, but I ended up selling the tilt only and got two hight adjustable models instead and love them. They are more sturdy on my desk as well.
@@JerrySchulze it’s so tempting!! At the moment it’s double the price of the Sony XM4 at $899 AUD. If I see it for $699 AUD on Amazon, I would consider it!
I think that’s super important to point out that you CAN NOT use the Mac Studio without a apple mouse/trackpad and keyboard, for the initial setup. Just sayin’👍🏾🤓
For bluetooth keyboard and mouse, at setup it will ask you to turn on the mouse, keyboard (although it shows Apple mouse, keyboard, you just put any bluetooth mouse, keyboard to pairing mode and it will automatically paired
@@JerrySchulze The Mac Studio, like the mini, by itself has no sound input. I FaceTime a lot as I hate using just a phone, also needed for use with Zoom. I do not know if the Studio Display has voice input. I could use the Logitech video camera which does have video and voice.
Nice video~! But..Airpods max is really a bad product for video editors, needs to be charged, the wire (lightening-3.5mm) is a buggy solution...Airpods max's audio quality is bad compared to a 150-dollar wired headphone...tho it has other advantages, overall definately not worth it...
