The BEST (and Worst) AMD Gaming CPU yet? 5800X Review

I know the value isn't really 'there', but what constitutes value as a tech enthusiast? Having the lowest latency and best overclocking CPU in the AMD Zen 3 line up? Well if so, then that would be the CPU I would go for (personally) when building a new high-end gaming CPU... AMD know to charge that $50 uptick more in relation to core/price ratio as I believe it also a 'cream of the crop' 8 core CCD.

Just look at the 3800X and why it's so unpopular. You will regret getting 5800X. You should either have gone for just 5600X or 5900X if you're that impatient to get a Zen 3 processor.

I just upgraded my old am4 system to this cpu in 2023. I was able to get it on sale for under $200 so I feel like it becomes a great price to performance now. Only thing I'm working on is thermals. My old cooler isn't quiet enough for this monster. Hopefully a new cooler and some undervolting will do the trick and it'll get me through a few more years.

It's the more (for the lack of a better phrase) forward thinking people like you and Bryan who would prefer the 5800x. Bryan is probably one of the top "value for money" youtubers out there and he chose the 5800x over the 5600x. Other reviewers of idea's of value for money is only looking forward 1 and at most 3 years. Their thought process is game for a year or two and upgrade to the next decently valued cpu and so on, adding cost to each upgrade, which will eventually even out the "wasted" money for justifying the 5800x now. In the end, for any competent minded person and whatever their idea of "value for money" is, money spent will even out. I personally got the 5800x and also plan on using it for the foreseeable future, as I did with my 4770k. Until the 20xx series geforce came out, my 4770k held out very well. I predict my 5800x will do the same.

smart guy, I have a 5800x and for some reason my benchmark numbers are higher than some of these techtubers numbers are. For cinebench r23 I have 1640 single core score and 15515 multicore, I just used ryzen master auto-oc. For speedometer 2.0 (html performance that reflects web browsing responsiveness) i'm getting 171mph. Based on others scores on 5900x i'm getting better single core score and better speedometer 2.0. Based on techyescity's score it's better at gaming. So essentially the 5800x is just better overall unless you're doing something that can leverage the additional cores. If I needed a 5900x I would just get a 5950x. The only thing the 5900x is good for is being a budget video editing/productivity cpu. 5800x is better for the gamer, 5950x is better for the person who needs the extra cores for productivity, virtualization, etc. To me the 5900x just seems like an upsell/jack of all trades master of none. The only thing is, I'm not sure why everyone's numbers are so different. I've seen a lot of benchmarks that put the 5900x ahead of the 5800x in gaming, but comparing my scores to online 5900x scores the 5800x is better.

This vid describes exactly the reason, i cancelled my early November 5900x preorder, and got me an actual available 5800x. Situation here in Europe cpu wise looks way better than with all the gfx cards, but still - 5900x will actually be available only early next year. So not because price (that's 0 concern for me, i had already paid the 5900x and getting refund), but the fun using an 8core 1ccd low latency monster of a chip. And i don't really need (!) that many cores anyways, plus planning on up/sidegrading several pc's in the house too, when 5000 series refresh comes out next year. Was extremely happy with the 3800XT (now my wife is, she enjoys the blistering speed in her now updated desktop, and the pure overkill on her casual&browser games). And the 5800X as well - that's really an impressive chip. Faster in anything, most noticeable in cpu dependent games (rpg's and older titles. Or newer, like Serious Sam4, where the cpu makes a world of a difference - we're talking +/- 50fps differences here with same gfx card). And the sweetest thing: all cores (not only 1,2 or 3 - all 8) reach 4850 easily, within a minute when checking with HWInfo, in single core/light loads, and around 4,4-4,6 in all core loads. Does a tiny tad higher temp at ~75°C at full load, yet similar to the 3800XT, with a good case and 240 AIO. But stock. And without PBO. And without even hitting the 140W limit doing so. Does take 4 dual ranked 16G sticks@3600 (which btw also the 3800XT was able to) - just sweet. I use an MSI MEG X570 Ace board btw. And as it's so snappy it needs no oc in any way, i just tried a little bit for fun - it takes even higher single core/light load boost speeds set in bios/fmax with ease. Or lower voltage on same clocks, or just have the best perfoming energy saver cpu by limiting it to 65 or 95W....simply because it can. Damn awesome - don't miss the 5900x in any way, and with very low super-pi 1m numbers (for fun/doing comparison) it feels beefy, stable and quick in anything, "like Intel" - yet even faster 👍

I had been planning on getting the 5800x, even had one in my cart for pick-up but cancelled it because they raised the prices! it's now $30CAD over MSPR and if I'm going to cave I might as well spent the extra $130CAD for $5900x.. yes I'm worried about the latency as well, but I do a lot of transcoding for work and that will be worth it over gaming hopefully.

Mine arrived today and i had only problems since i put it in. Made a BIOS update before, installed the latest chipset drivers (in fact i worked in IT and have some exp). As soon i put the 5800X in i had constant blue screens, and crashes. Tried everything, deactivating XMP, PBO, C-State control, installed a new Windows (and dropped all my VST-Plugins of my DAW for music producing...the whole reason i wanted to upgrade in the first place). It kept crashing, i read into that problem, and saw many people and forums talking about it. I know i could hassle around with voltages and such, but i want a stable out of the box experience, before i OC my setup. Man what a bummer, i really wanted to like this CPU but so far it was one of the worst experiences, in my 20 years of IT. RMA incoming and will settle on a 5700X i guess, hope that one won't let me down.

Appreciate the alternative perspective on the 5600X, 5800X? I probably would wait for the 5700X and/or 5600, still not sure I want to invest more in 8 cores, by the time it matters maybe I'll be upgrading again anyway. How about a few tests, load up a system with a 5600X, run a couple of benchmarks with nothing open, then load your chrome, discord, spotify etc, run em again, rinse repeat with a 5800X? That would be really interesting because, I mean you'd want to test a couple of CPU intensive and CPU light games to see the differences

The 5800X is a beast. I have mine at all stock BIOS settings, except for custom fan curves and turning on DOCP for the RAM and it's clocking up to 4.94Ghz on a Noctua NH-U14S. It normally doesn't go over 72 degrees under a real world heavy load. With Prime 95 during a torture test, it can reach 90C even, but only with the AVX instructions enabled. Even during the Prime 95 torture test, it was running at 4.6Ghz on all cores and never dropped below that. Geek bench gave me a 1720 single core benchmark. Sorry I lost the multi core Geekbench result, but it was over 10k that much I remember. I'm using a Asus Tuf Gaming X570 Pro, a new mobo from Asus and Crucial Ballistics RAM at 3200Mhz. It's been updated to the most recent "stable" BIOS although it was running good out of the box.

Mine tends to run hot, which I knew when I made the purchase so I planned my build around it. I have a 360 aio with the radiator on top and the fans under it pushing air from the inside out and 3 140mm fans on the front pulling cool air in. The front fans do not have to spin as fast to move the same amount of air so it is quiet there and the radiator blocks much of the noise from the internal fans. It does kick up to 90c during long stress tests, but even at those temps the clocks stay solid right around 4.5ghz on all cores. Once the tests are over it cools down pretty quick.

I also have a 5800x, h115i pro xt as cooling, 2 top and 1 back exhaust and 2 bottom ones, 3080 gpu. Out of the box the cpu ran very hot and throtled (for me) because it gave almost 1.4V. I undervolted in the bios (after ryzen master testing) and changed the PBO (power boost option) to negative 30 and now the cpu only gets around 1.2875V and does 4750 rock stable. Idle temps are now 36C and stresstested 83C. I recommend an undervolt my man.

I don't see the prices dropping until the old stock for 3000 series is sold, which might take some time as people are waiting for the rest of the 5000 series SKUs.I don't think a 5700 is going to launch before rocket lake, also the 8 core yields for AMD appear to be an issue for AMD, which may explain the weird positioning of the 5800x. I bought the 5800X for FL studio, and I feel like it's a really good balance between core count and single thread performance. The single thread performance slays with FL studios workload, I can throw on a ton of effects and not have to worry. and 8 cores is perfect as FL doesn't really scale beyond that anyway.

@saricubra2867

I'm using an old high end mobile i7-4700MQ quad core (4 cores, 8 threads) for music production, with an undervolt, i have 358 points in CPU-Z for singlethread and 1776 multithreaded (overall i beat the 2600K). I do fine and i also have 16GB of RAM and i will upgrade to an SSD soon. From personal experience, you should buy the CPU with the highest singlethread perfomance (audio buffer, effect chains and other stuff love singlethread) and number of cores, the 5800X has 3400 points in passmark singlethread vs the 3000 for the 10700K. The problem is, that the 10700K can close the gap (it's also cheaper) because with an undervolt of -100 mv, you can have 5GHz all core clock, so it costs like 70-100 dollars less while the multithreaded perfomance is only 10-12% slower (with the undervolt of course and that 10 or 12% is irrelevant for audio, the CPU never reaches 100% or 90% on task manager anyways due to the nature of real time audio processing). This is the i7-10700K undervolted: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x9gtfkdFqWY.html I recommend the 5900X (3500 points singlethread) or the 5950X (3600), better than an i9-10900K (3100 points, 10 cores and 20 threads) if you want the 5800X, you can also buy that one, but remember that the difference in perfomance compared to the i7 is small for the price and is kinda wasted money, rather upgrade from 8 cores to 12. www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

I just got the 5800x for my wife's machine at a Microcenter here in the USA. It was $400 USD vs the 5600x for $280, but my wife doesn't like messing around with her computer any more often than is absolutely necessary. The 5800x will stay relevant courtesy of those extra 2 cores/4 threads altogether longer than the 5600x would. So I talked it over with her, as she's knowledgeable about these things but doesn't enjoy tinkering around with pc builds or messing around with them once she's got them set up how she likes them. She was more than happy for us to pay the extra $120 for a cpu that'll stay relevant for longer and maybe get her another year or even two of good performance in games when the 5600x's 6 core/12 thread situation might be fading into the mid-tier. We're both pretty firmly convinced that the PS5 and Xbox Series X era is going to see PC games be optmized for those platforms as well or even firstly even moreso than was the case throughout the PS4/Xbox 1 era. In a year or two, I think the 5800x will still be a solid contender for top-end performance in games, whereas I think anything less than 8 physical core and 16 thread solutions are going to be increasingly left behind. We can already see that happening to 4c/8t CPUs in a lot of games that were optimized hard for late-gen performance on PS4 Pro and XB1 platforms. They still work, but it can't be disputed that the difference in performance between, say, a 4c/8t 7700k and a 6c/12t 8700k in a good many newer games is directly affected by core count. Right now, today, 6c/12t is the sweet spot in most games for top tier performance for the money, but I think that's largely due to that the PS4 Pro and the XB1X are 8c platforms that only actually use 6c for running games. The other 2c are generally reserved for the OS and background junk. Console development really dictates a lot of what the standards are for game development, and there's no real mystery about why; they've got a much larger market share. PC ports of console games has been a much-complained-about reality for probably fifteen years or so, and its the standard anymore with almost all games, sometimes weirdly enough even with games made for PC that never wind up on the consoles they were developed to eventually migrate to. I don't think 6c/12t CPUs are going to suddenly get bottom-tiered or anything, but I think they're going to go the route of 4c/8t a lot more quickly than it took for us to move past 4c/8t as the sweet spot for gaming. 8c/16t is going to be the new sweet spot real quick. And I don't doubt for one second that, in about two years, we'll be seen games coming out that, all other factors being identical, will cough up something like 60 FPS on a 5600x and 90 FPS on a 5800x simply due to the games being optimized to take advantage of 8c/16t with increasing commonality. So, my wife and I discussed this and she just about immediately decided that the extra $120 was worth being able to delay having to consider upgrading to a new mobo/ram/cpu baseline any sooner than will be necessary to stay in the upper tier of gaming performance. We can easily afford it, but we aren't the sorts of people that like to spend money on things that don't make sense even if we could light it on fire and never miss it. Just isn't good practice or what smart people do, after all. If you want the best gaming CPU for the money right now, today, the 5600x is a no-brainer. Get it, be happy with it, you didn't make a mistake. If you want the best gaming CPU for right now and one that will remain a strong performer for years to come, the 5800x is going to stay in the high end longer. This won't mean a thing to you if you're the type that builds a new PC with new hardware every two years or so, because the 5600x will probably still be a strong performer in two years and the 5800x will probably be outclassed by whatever the big new thing is by that time. But if you're like my wife and you like your desktop to be solidly good for at least five years, the 5800x is everything the 5600x is, just more of it. 2x/4t more of it, to be precise. Those extra cores will never be a detriment to you, and as time goes by, they're going to be taken advantage of more and more as 8c/16t becomes the new 4c/8t standard of yesteryear.
