spent years working with gw and the teams of people they underpaid abused and took advantage of. exodite was ripped from the hands of the original creators due to legal strong-arming. the first episode had already been near completion when they forced a full re-write of the plot, and the series was originally supposed to be entirely in the tau language, the eldar were supposed to be in the eldarish and even gothic was going to be in latin(ish) for imperials. then gw told the creators that if they didn't agree to their demands theyd regret it. These are the same guys that did Angels of Death before they basically got ran out of the production at the end of the last episode because boylan wanted to make the show his way and his way only, denying any feedback or artistic freedom from his peers. They basically promised that team the sun and the moon to get them to work for nothing, and said they'd work out crediting them--- do any of them have credits? nope. the work of all artists who ever worked on a GW project gets reused in many productionns from GW, all their assets, yet the artists remain with no recognition. Why? because nothing is bigger then the brand. If the gw team led by andy smilie think your getting too big for your boots they'll run you out. there was a plot to the exodite, it just got kicked out the window for mindless monologuing courtesy of the rotation of writers who pass each script around with no idea what anything means. Their quality control is hilarious with random staff members who know barely anything about the lore piling notes on a spreadsheet for artists who are bleeding their passion because they are forced to make subpar 40k products. these "lore experts" regularly quit too which results in nothing making sense, and it can be years into a project until the new person comes on and they make you redo all the work over and over and over (it took one character fifteen months to be completed, a character that should have taken 6 weeks) angels of death bad sound? for sure, boylan thought he could do better with a free library and ignored the sound team, plus isnt everything covered by camera shake! hartmans another gem and screwed everyone over to get to where he is. feel bad for the iron within folks. they were given more of a leash then everyone but it was originally a 30k story. please dont give any credit to gw for astartes and pour out one for peterson whos in developement hell. they robbed these artists, took their ideas, never gave them credit, underpaid them, treated them like shit and kept the ones who wouldn't put up a fight. they're a company that acts like they're disney except they're way less competent and everyone stays poor and abused without any direction to march into its not that they are terrible writers, pay nothing, threaten people or screw artists over, its also the fact theyre criminally incompetent which makes everyone hate their life choices.

@@MidwinterMinis I can't confirm what the timeline was exactly, but after recently hearing from someone close to the project what the story was initially for The Exodite vs. what we got, I feel pretty confident they had the project almost completely gutted just a few weeks before its scheduled release, and GW sent them back to nearly square one to make an entirely new show with a new story and cram that into an 8-month turnaround. The initial teaser that the studio who made it released showed Striking Scorpions fighting Space Marines, and the Tau speaking in their native language, and we got none of that in the final series, though it aligns with the original story outline I heard.

In my opinion, the most egregious problem is the lack of credits for those that worked on these shows. I can't think of any other company that actively choses not to credit people. I love how Astartes was made by a guy who was just a massive fan - still better than almost all of the stuff that GW has put out on Warhammer+. There are other fan-made animations on RU-vid that are almost on a par with Astartes, IF you know where to look. I'd add links, but i wouldn't want James Workshop taking these down :(
@Black_Rabbit_84
@Black_Rabbit_84 10 месяцев назад
While I agree that Astartes is definitely better than anything created specifically for Warhammer+, it's 13 minutes of animation that took over 2 years to make. The animator was also more than likely earning far more on Patreon than the budget of any Warhammer+ show. There was also little to no voice acting, the music was from Dredd, and the story was fairly bare bones. None of which diminishes the accomplishment that Astartes was, as its probably the best exampld of really capturing the 40k vibe, but making a fan film on your own time with no budget, deadline, or copyright concerns is quite different to the pressures of producing for a studio.

The credit thing was a fight back in the 'good old days'. There was an interview with a YT channel recently (edit: Rick Priestley interview with Filmdeg Minis) that said the GW artists and sculptors kicked off massively because the writers were getting credits but they weren't. Everyone in the room knew it wasn't the text that was selling their books and minis. That's why GW used to have the artist names along with their art identifying marks/signitures in the credits section. Now the company have gone to the other extreme. No writer credits for rulebooks, no artist credits for art or design work. And now seemingly no recognition even for their painting staff in videos since Duncs, Peachy, Louise, etc pivoted to their own channels.

I’m probably coming to this too late. But I was contracted in 2018 to make shows, brought on the majority of animators in what was eventually warhammer+. To say working for them in this time, through COVID, was a blessing and a curse is an understatement and best described as being in an abusive relationship. Without getting into it too much, the lack of accreditation remains the ultimate insult to the men and women, many who were at the start of their careers and who loved the universes we built in. I see evidence of their work reused constantly to the benefit of an extremely wealthy corporation run by extremely well paid, and recognized, upper management as they show up in articles and announce involvement with Amazon. But I guess that’s hollywood. My only recommendation is to build your own stuff and treat your people the way you wish you had been treated.

The "not crediting people" thing seems to go back a long way. On the recent film deg interview with Rick Priestly he mentions wanting to stop crediting people way back to the late 80s/early 90s and only relented because John Blanche kicked off about it, so it does seem to be something which dates back to when GW were a much smaller operation, for whatever reason. I've not had a W+ sub so far, and that really surprises me. Theres so much stuff they could put on there or content they could create but the release schedule is so inconsistent I'd never commit to a subscription based model to pay for it. It says something that all my favourite warhammer youtube creators all have much more consistent schedules than an actual company with (presumably) staff and resourced

Something that annoys me about WH+ is the content doesn't seem to be on local servers. Here in Australia the quality of video streams is 240p 360p at best with constant buffer wheels so the videos are unwatchable most of the time. Strangely it seems to be the new releases that stream ok so maybe the age of content and popularity dictates how many servers are being used to distribute content. The same goes for the vault, there is no support for local download within an app so streaming the pages in is extremely slow and sometimes crashes. I got the service as the white dwarf mags were only 3 months behind the magazine releases but now I think they realised that it may have been hurting white dwarf sales and have not released anything in the vault service in months. It is disappointing to see the massive slow down in releases, the service is not compelling at all anymore.

I agree 100% with everything you two said. At first I thought the price of a movie ticket once a month was fair. But I expected a movie’s length worth of content. Exodite - great visuals no story. Interrogator - made it through 1 episode, kudos to you for watching the whole series. Hammer and Bolter - meh, you win some you lose some Angels of Death - did we really need that many episode to tell that story? Iron Within, Astartes, Pariah Nexus - loved them. Deep Strike - really enjoyed it, now it’s gone. Lore Masters - Loved it with Wade, can’t watch it now with the new guy. Masterclass - loved the concept, but really I get that for free on youtube. Battle report - excellent production, but, I don’t play 40K, AoS, Horus Heresy, or War Cry so I’m not going to watch those. I play Kill Team, but only 1 episode every 3 months to introduce the newest faction, also free on youtube. The warhammer+ app - who the heck thinks the way you have to navigate to watch an episode of anything is good. Drives me crazy. The Vault - haven’t even been curious enough to explore that once in two years, why should I care about back issues of white dwarf when most of the content is irrelevant today. List builders - a paywall for a tool to play their games, that is shady. The warhammer+ website - decent for 1999 , but in 2023, super lame. The “free” minis - neat, but not enough to keep me subscribed. No credits to creators - unforgivable Obviously a rushed to market product that is severely understaffed with not enough content to keep me interested. When my current subscription expires I will not be renewing it.

As an artist, not crediting artists isn't just a cold, cruel, bad business decision, it's unethical, and worse it's purposeful, they know exactly why they don't want to, and I'm concerned they will never change. They used to credit artists, it's disgusting.

My absolute biggest gripe with most of their CGI made animations is they have to add this GODAWFUL shaky cam for every freaking action scene. Watching Angels of Death (main series) was a headache inducer, which is unfortunate as it was for the most part pretty good enough. And it's the same movement of shaky cam too! All, except for a few like Pariah Nexus. But yet, even that one has an annoyance of those unneeded "chapter breaks" that serve no real purpose other than to pan out time.

Thank you both for calling out the lack of crediting! It's bugged me from the beginning of the platform being released. When brilliant, talented people like Hatty are clearly working so hard to produce quality content (and are evidently being overworked into the deal), the barest minimum you can do if acknowledging that person's creative input. I don't know any equivalently sized organisation in the arts that does this and it's frankly shameful when you consider the number of freelance actors and designers that will have worked on these projects and rely on crediting to help in securing future work on different projects.

But I wanted to share that GW like some other giants in the fantasy industry have lost their ways with regards to what fans want. I want to thank the individuals out there who have the tenacity to masterfully go above and beyond making films on their own which we all want more of. Helsreach The Movie (2019) (RBoylan Film), being my first fan-created film, was masterful. But Astartes Project by Syama Pedersen I believe will be the new beginning and I can't wait for this world and culture of 40K to hit the main stage and show its greatness. Painting tutorials are okay, but the stuff you get on RU-vid is obviously better. The battle reports.... Have the same issue as all the others. To be entertaining, at least one of the players has to be enthusiastic up to the level of becoming "that guy" from your local store. And I have zero tolerance for that. I think you're undervalueing Interrogator, that show is solid and the story is good. B- imo.

Love the video - although I agree with most of your critiques I couldn’t disagree more with giving things negative ratings for being inaccessible. Two points to this; 1) I don’t think anyone but a fan that’s dipped their toes into the lore will be subscribing to warhammer+ so you’ll have some basis of knowledge to what’s going on, maybe not complete comprehension but a lot of the stories don’t really require that. They’re more a fun spectacle. 2) it’s not too hard to dive into the lore to gain comprehension of what’s going on, I do agree that a bit more context in the shorts themselves wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, but simultaneously if you’re already a fan there’s nothing worse with being bogged down by 1000 origin stories for every single thing going on when you’ve heard those same origin stories a hundred times already. Spider Man syndrome if you will. Anyway - fantastic video! Glad to see you guys critiquing warhammer+ as I 100% think there’s very little value in it as of now. I subscribed to watch Pariah Nexus and although there were some cool bits was overall let down.

They tried to fire everybody and then when they had a better idea of numbers remaining after some shit slinging stuck they let go of anyone else they needed to to get down to the required numbers (obvs firing people you don't have to pay redundancy). While i was there (not that long, a year or 2) at least 4 people were fired and successfully took gw to employment tribunal. Gws policy was (and I guess still is) " if you don't want this job there is 50 other people that do, so we can pay peanuts and fire you if your face doesn't fit". The leadership is (was) an old boys network of the most insular nature with people in authority being utterly useless at their job for the most part and in quiet a few cases firing anyone that might make them look bad by actually being competent at thier job. I have many good friends still from those days and no one...not one, left on good terms that I can think of. What's so strange about the story telling is that GW seems to be making the mistake in thinking that the average 40k fan is a fan of ALL the lore. Most fans tend to latch onto a faction or two, so assuming they have this wide knowledge of every organization is foolhardy. I get the argument that they're only making WH+ for fans, but 'fans' is a spectrum. I know PLENTY of people who got into 40k through fan animations and would shell out a few bucks to basically have a low-cost subscription to get more of that. The thing is, most of the fan animations are SUPER streamlined stories that often require little to no context for newcomers (Lets face it, it's usually some arrangement of A bunch of normies get killed by baddies except for last one, all hope seems lost, dramatic entrance of space marine, last normy is like 'oooo angels ahhhh emperor', baddies get ded, Space Marine dramatically Walks off.) If anything, it would be good business to introduce existing fans to all the new factions via story telling, tempting them to pick up more minis/books/games etc.

58:19 yeah I think there'd at least be a discussion to be had, if Geedubs didn’t burn the 40k animation community to the ground, and enforce such a terrible work environment, as is I despise what Warhammer + represnets (as you pointed out, nothing against the many talented people who make the magic happen, this is purley a knock against Geedubs as a company and maybe the big wigs that made these decisions to begin with)

I really enjoyed masterclass, especially Louise's night goblin video. I agree that it started off much better, and I didn't realise why till your video, but I found myself loosing interest with the later episodes until I stopped watching . My biggest issue though was that it felt like there was only one short 5 minute music loop throughout the show that started off good but got really grating as it went on. It would be great if they had a few hours of music through (maybe they did but it felt like just the Warhammer+ theme on a loop). Unfortunately I found the lore videos to be a bit sterile and the battle reports a bit bland. I enjoy narrative games a lot and although there were some stand outs, most where just two armies fighting. I always got the feeling management was trying to stamp out any individuality from its hosts to keep it safe and on brand. You really see people like Louise and Peachy thrive on their own channels and that would have been great on the show. The hosts personalities and quirks are what really sell viewership for me. I wanted Warhammer+ to work but I finally left this year and didn't even remember to keep watching it for the rest of my last subscribed month. Sad rant over.

I had such high hopes when Warhammer+ was announced but decided to wait when I learned that upon launch all they had to offer was a small selection of White Dwarf magazines that didn't even have their full contents. (Apparently they cut out articles that included reviews of rules and battle reports from outdated editions.) Then the RU-vid purge of fan animations happened and I wanted to see if GW would change its stance from the public backlash. Shame to see that after 2yrs it hasn't really grown much. There is their own produced animations that seem very short and not that well received. The studio based content looks to be on par with what I can find from a multitude of content creators on RU-vid for free with a better release schedule to boot. In the end it just looks like a grand idea that got a lot of fanfare, but was push out too quick with not enough support behind it. Something I've seen from GW several times, sadly.

one more thing. The quotations at the beginning of each episode of Interrogator are a *BIT* like "Thought For The Day" , or "Today's thought, Thought for the Reverent, Thought for the Pious" etc. You see these as far back as Rogue Trader (1987) rulebooks on their own, or printed at the beginning or end of Imperial documents - through 5th edition, and even occasionally inna White Dwarf magazine of 2016. *NOTABLY* , the game Darktide (2022) uses them on every loading screen. Although usually, they don't list particular documents, or books, or authors that originally said them. I feel for someone new to 40k, they give a bit of a sense of how the Imperium thinks through its propaganda. I didn't see any skimming my 9nth edition core Rule Book (I don't have 10th yet) *BUT* the book does have hand written "notes" in the margin of the rulebook in script📜. Some of these are in fact old "Thoughts for the Day" , some of them are NEW.

Recently I got some guys from Black Sword Miniatures, and it was such a stark contrast of gw. On the page for each miniature they credited the concept artist, the sculptor, with a little description blurb by each. I know as a company Black Sword is on the complete opposite end of the miniature spectrum to GW, but the Warhammer sculptors are some of the best on the planet and deserve that level of respect. Imagine sculpting a primarch and not even being able to get your name on it, this seriously needs to change.
