This is what's lacking in most riders in my country. Most people think its just all about speed and the ability to lane filter and swerve in any situation. Anticipation really plays a huge role in driving/riding in general. Thank you for sharing this man.

I just started riding last week since I already got my license. And your videos really helped me a lot when on the road(lane positioning, escape routes on stop light, avoiding blindspots, anticipate stupid, etc) it gave me a lot of confidence and not once did I panic. I just want to say thank you. Finally subbed I think yesterday or 2 days ago after seeing a lot of your informational videos. Best channel for motorcycle etiquette IMO.

There was a study about speed and safety. The safety area is 10 mph faster than the surrounding traffic.

Another thing is I try my best to avoid riding at night. It's just too difficult to see obstacles on the road.

Mate your approach to teaching this stuff, your no nonsense attitude in regards to safety etc is just bloody awesome and has been a massive help to me in my early stages of learning to ride on the road, thank you very much sir, I appreciate your videos to the moon, keep on rocking dude!

I believe many people underestimate the importance of these defensive riding tips. I just did lane filtering in heavy freeway traffic, and it truly emphasizes the need to remain alert and focused in such situations!

I really like that phrase, "predict stupid and you'll be fine." That perfectly sums up most of the non-motorcycle riding individuals on the road. I've always maintained that "they're all out to get you." ....works for me!

You could cut the 28x down since half the accidents are caused by alcohol and drugs, and being sleepy. I was listening to an interview with a Florida sheriff the other day and I can’t remember, 60%? Well over half of collisions involving motorcycle and cars or trucks are the motorcyclists fault, and most of them are alcohol and drug related. I see a few bars near my home with Harleys (a few other brands) outside them anytime they are open. So the message is not being heard. This is not to do with jitsus content today, not to refute what he is saying, he’s right, absolutely. But if you drink or take even a little bit and go riding, you can’t strategize your way out of the booze or drugs. People in cars are terribly dangerous, they are not looking for you and don’t care, but you have to start without the handicap of alcohol or drugs.

This is one of the best formats that you make in my opinion. Literally skin to the game.

I definitely agree with the yellow lights. As a car driver I’m not accustomed to seeing yellow lights other than stop lights or warning indicators on signs. A yellow light will get my attention.

I’m a California rider (R1200RT) in the SoCal area too. You’re 💯 spot on. I do the same thing as you when I ride the freeways down here. If you don’t, you are asking to go down. Even after a few decades of riding and splitting lanes, I just don’t understand why some guys push WAY TOO HARD and go TOO FAST while splitting lanes. The cars are not paying even the smallest amount of attention and they’ll hit you in a flash. Too much speed will limit your reaction time and send you to the hospital or the grave. One of my mentors when I first learned to ride told me something that has stuck all these years. He said there are two types of riders, those that have gone down and those that will go down. By being as safe as possible, I’m hoping to push the date of me going down far ahead of where I’m currently at. Thanks for your content. 🥋 🏍️

I was a few minutes behind motorcycle-car wreck last year. BLUF: car was in left turn lane, motorcycle riding straight in lane to right of car, at last moment car went right out of their lane & hit full dresser H-D with rider & passenger. Riders seriously injured, survived but permanent injuries. I stay away from cars as much as possible. Just my opinion, you ride close to those cars & tractor trailer, even passed a car in the same lane (you 2 shared the same lane). All it takes is a bump on the steering wheel, spilled coffee, driver search for something, etc. & could be impact. Ride safe.

Although I know there's blind spot, I never thought that staying close to their vehicle would be safer than staying in the left side of the lane, that's interesting. But getting away from people is also my first goal when choosing when and where I ride my 2 wheels.

Your observation and strategy of getting away from the unsafe drivers is a good one. One addition I make to all my bikes is adding fog/running lights to my crash guards on all my bikes except for my CVO, which has them up high. At the least, I've got 5 lights facing forward. As to gear I now incorporate a bright yellow helite airbag vest. I started this after I lost a good friend on his BMW bike up by Steamboat, CO, when he hit a mule deer. He was DOA by the time they got him to the hospital. The helmet is full face.

Break the Law on the road to keep Safe?? I'm not too sure about that advice. Constantly Lane Splitting , undertaking, overtaking, has only a certain shelf life for an average rider.

The only thing I have a problem with in your videos is the fact I can recognize all those roads and am so jealous I don't live in LA anymore. Thanks so much for all your videos and content. Being a first time rider on a S1KRR, it's been an absolutely amazing time thanks to you and a couple other channels. Your advice to go take classes likely saved me. Also, not sure if others feel the same way, but I feel about 50x safer on freeways than local or "intersectioned" roads. Love your attitude and hope you don't change!

And of course, most important of all, always keep both hands on the bars.

Good stuff Eddie. As an Army veteran, I've learned all about situational awareness and I try to teach my kids the same thing. Don't get "tunnel vision" with what's going on in your immediate area, but stay aware of the whole situation. What's around you, what's beyond you and what's coming and going. These concepts are the same for riding a motorcycle as well as doing anything else in public. Keep your head up and be aware.

No BS info; this is how I’ve lived this long. From 16-64, most riders fell out. The survivors wanna keep riding, so ride sane. People tell me to ride safe; I tell them it’s impossible to be “safe” on a motorcycle, but I WILL be careful and competent.

One of your best videos. I would describe your concepts as the general subject of "situational awareness" at all times, and constantly making best choices to manage risks. Your comments about being aware of several semis coming on and how that moves the vehicles in lanes 1-3 into your area of concern is a great example. Some other concepts I follow riding are: 1) maintain two second gap to the vehicle in front (add more if speed goes up), what is my escape route/plan, manage the space BEHIND you by managing the space IN FRONT of you, pace not race - nothing to prove, what's next all the time, no accidents ever. Expecting total b.s. and chaos prepares you mentally and tactically for anything.

I started with a scooter/moped it actually helped me with all this stuff on normal roads but on the highway? Different story, everything was just faster so this vid actually helped a lot

I certainly agree with you about expecting the unexpected when riding in traffic. I have seen a lot of this in the years I have been riding. I enjoy your instructions to other riders in your videos. I don’t know about California, but here in British Columbia, Canada, lane splitting is illegal and I think in the whole country. One of the problems I find riding in my area is a lot of drivers don’t like to drive behind a motorcycle, they often want to take over you to slow down in front of you. That drives me mad. By the way, love your videos, they are very practical and instructional. Thanks for sharing your knowledge

I found your channel a year ago when I got my first bike the advice has been good especially where I lived because there were 2- 7 wreaks a day on the same roads and countless people pulled out in front of me when I first started taking my bike through town but I would either be on the left side or right side depending on what side they would be pulling into the road from and could either dodge or slow down enough to avoid them. Definitely going to start doing your drills because I just moved to a way busier town. Love the videos and advice

I switched to Green led's on front and red led's rear,, with clear lenses and 2 blinker genies to keep them all on as running lights my 2000 X650RL. People notice me in the daytime way away earlier than before. And at night time it's very very bright👍

Although you are right about staying out of blind spots, my theory is to stay to the outside of the other lane when passing line of vehicles just in case someone cuts over. Technically I’m not in the blind spot until I’m just behind the vehicle. I prefer the space cushion so I have time to react. If you are passing and close to traffic you are at their mercy.

Agree with almost everything posted on the video. As for lane filter on highway, an additional precaution would be to ensure an escape route. In essence lane filtering is zig zag, as opposed to having a vehicle on both sides. However, when vehicles are stopped or real slow speed, then exercise speed differential to pass between vehicles whilst covering the brakes for a potential 'idiot'. Thanks for the great videos which has improved my riding skills through your vidoes n Motojitsu Belt training.

Just a note about blind spots, on some luxury cars they now have blind spot warning lights on their mirrors. When you ride near these cars then you can see when you reach the blind spot by keeping an eye on the cars mirror and seeing this light go on and off.

Being a urban police officer is one of the most dangerous job in the world. Most of them don't die or get hurt. So even if something is extremely dangerous, you can be completely fine and not have any problems if you have the right judgment and knowledge. Motorcycles are the same.

Absolutely agree. I see a lot of new riders around here, delivering for those apps like Uber eats, and the hesitate a lot on those situations where I would expect them to go through first.

At 3:38 you’re absolutely right there’s studies that show speed differential is the principal factor in severe highway crashes, it’s estimated that 10-15+ mph speed difference becomes dangerous, that’s why there’s a law that say’s you can follow the flow of traffic even if everyone around you is doing over the speed limit, I’m sure you must’ve seen it being local to San Diego, once you go past Balboa park up north in the freeway everyone is doing 85-90 mph, I’m not trying to get sandwiched by and F150 doing 90mph while I’m on my GS doing 65.

"If you drive the speed limit ..." I've lived in different areas, but where I am now: The interstate highway speed limit here is 70 except in certain more populous areas where it's slower. Some people may drive about the speed limit, more than I'd expect drive slower, but most people will cruise at just over 70 to about 77, which I'd guess is about 75, maybe 80 on some, speedometers. About 30% seem to do 80-85, and then there are the idjits who are trying to drive much faster or much slower than traffic in the fringe quantities. But what causes the most overt danger from my observation are the following: People who wait to change lanes until the last moment to exit (often needing to cross two or more lanes to reach a highway exit) People who are either not paying attention or have potentially disastrous reaction speeds, approaching other cars much too closely and braking before even considering a move into a passing lane People cutting others off People who drive at or below the speed limit in the far left lane What makes me the most nervous is what I call a traffic clump. It's a batch of cars traveling about the same speed, and there are usually a few people jockeying to be the front car going that speed, accelerating to weave around, then slowing down again. It results in a dense little herd of people all tailgating, cutting others off, and people getting irritated by everyone else's behaviors.

Maybe people think the flashing hazards are a motorcop coming up.

When you look at the causes of motorcycle fatalities, an experienced rider with good strategy can reduce the dangers of riding close to that of a car. The difference is our protection is agility not armor. Dark Souls players will understand this. If you don't get hit you don't need armor, but you have to be good enough to not get hit.

That describes the way I drive, and I've taken some pointers to improve some stuff I can improve on. But the amount of unpredictability in my country is insane. Like I keep expecting the worst, but sometimes I'm still caught off guard. For example, today, a guy was reversing in the middle of a blind turn. I managed to slow down and move past him. But i can tell i was scared because my elbows went up, which affected how I steer.

You mentioned the people driving on their phones or drunk. Add to this all the drugs people are on, prescription, and or illegal. When I get home, I say: Not today Death. Not today.

At age 80, shortly, highway driving is absolutely out of the question. 50mph is my upper limit. I will not ride where the speed is greater then that. Plenty of great riding with my limit

Every time I throw my leg over my motorcycle I know I’d better enjoy it because it could very well be my last ride. I’ve been riding with this mindset for 20+ years, been lucky with no accidents.

Lane splitting/ filtering is illegal in Wisconsin. Also, my bike does not have a "hazards" option. It's kinda old and simple. "Get away from people" life goals lol

I disagree on lane position in the carpool lane. I always choose the inner left part of the lane. People can still see me (and my clear waters). That way if some idiot makes a move, I have time to react and not hit them. Also I find myself lane splitting less since I got my Ducati Pike Peak with radar cruise control.
