Thanks for the educational videos Paul, i’ve been following for some time, got a 5’ DAY avocado that give me a dozen fruit in less than a year my surprise is better than Hass, nutty and dense meet with thin skin.
My son bought me a Beta avocado he picked it cause it had the fruit on it already😂. The fruit was good …nutty flavor. Its a mid season I’m interested in buying early and late season thanks for all your info love your videos❤ we also live in Florida 10b
I have a Dupuis. 1 year in the ground it flowered amazing. Made some fruit (3), but I think I picked it too early. Def don't think its a June avocado, maybe July/Aug. Catalina also flowered but dropped all fruit. It was too young, but it did flower twice but lesser so the next year. My Oro Negro is lazy; no fruit but growing nicely. Of the three the Catalina grows super quickly and is the bushiest. The Dupuis is upward bound and the Oro Negro seems to be spreading in girth not so much height.
@@FruitfulTrees I'm just below Boca Raton in Broward. The Dupuis flowered like crazy, even more than the Catalina. The tree I have is so small so it was surprising. 1st year in the ground.
What is the minimum distance (on average) that you plant these trees by each other? I am also developing my little collection here in SW Florida (zone 10b) and am looking to get as many as I can in my yard, also planning to keep them smaller.
@@YoBravaFrumAnuvaMuva Mine are planned 8-9 feet apart (Catalina/Oro Negro). The Dupuis is another 17 feet away. They seem to be doing fine. Maybe not optimal but nature fills in where there is sun light in general.
Useful info as I add few more to my dozen or so in the ground, farther N. Commifornia, low inland, 9a. *Green Dreams* a good place, for us distant, to get Florida avo *trees.* Have maybe half of those recommended in vid, availability variable. (no affiliation, just few good online multi plant orders, healthy plants at good prices, affordable shipping)
Thanks for the video Paul on Avocados 🥑 I planted my JALA Avocados in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 just need to make sure my Kids don't kick the soccer ⚽️ ball in to it now ? I think I can get Russel type in Australia which I look out for. 👍🥑I would like to know your thoughts ? on the Mexican types Mexicola and Sir Prize as I have those’s types as well as Lamb Hass over here.
@@johnbanach3875 Negative, I’m in Southern California inland Riverside. I haven’t heard anyone trying or attempting to grow that variety in Florida. Got it 👍🏽
Although the flavor is a little sweet, Lula has always reminded me of a California avocado. Cons: big seed, thick skin that doesn't peel off, very large tree, alternate bearing? Pluses: VERY LONG season, which can last from October to January, dense texture, flavor. I have a Simmonds tree, and I, too, like it for late summer, BUT it's not in the same league as a California avocado (Hass, Fuerte, Reed, Sharwil, Gwen, Pinkerton, even Bacon)--lacks the oil. The richest flavored Florida avocado from my experience has been Oro Negro. I've never tasted Dupuis, Lolo (aka Tito), or Kampong, but I'd like to!
@@greatergood3706 But you have to scoop out the pulp! I picked about 100 lb. of fruit over 3 months from one old tree in my community in 2022. It took last year off, but has fruit again this year.
What I don’t understand is that out the many varieties mentioned, Ooh La La (AKA - Super Hass) wasn’t even one of them, yet it’s widely considered to be amongst the best oily avocado varieties to grow in Florida. Supposedly, it was originally a seedling from the Hass variety that had superior qualities.
I have one about 5 yrs in the ground from 15gal tree, farther NorCali, low inland, 9a. Fruited a few, 1st time this season and promptly dropped 'em like all but one of my young avos this season. High expectations tho. Both my Wurz and Reed grew too dense and top heavy, foolishly delayed modestly topping and trimming Reed (didn't want to hurt my baby!) but did so the Wurz....big storm OTW, soaked foliage plus high winds snapped Reed near base, nearly dead baby, lol, growing strong but from below graft, junk until grafted again. Wurz stood (couple yrs ago), needs a little more trimming now and every yr. *DO NOT hesitate to prune an avo!* If they look topheavy and/or overlapping, over grown, whack in half gangly limbs, or growing into pathways, etc. I have to top all of my strongest growers, around a dozen in the ground, most w multiple trunks, repeatedly to keep stout. Do it thoughtfully but don't let them break the main trunk in a modest storm. They shrug of heavy pruning. (or stake it or whatever it takes but at some point must be pruned fairly hard in *my novice* experience) (((pardon long winded post, thank me later ;-)))
It's been said that the Wurtz sold in California may be different than the one sold in Florida. I've grown the Florida Wurtz, which produces very nice fruit, although on the small side, and the tree is smaller than other avocado trees.
Hey Paul, I don’t follow your other channels but I have a quick question. My wife is currently pregnant and is having a hard time holding down any food but fruit. What fruit have the most protein from your experience? Good gives the same 10 answers that only cover basic grocery store fruits. They don’t list the plethora of all of the tropical fruit out there.
Per ChatGPT, Tropical fruits generally have lower protein content compared to other food groups, but some have relatively higher amounts than others. The tropical fruits with the most protein include: 1. **Guava**: One of the highest protein tropical fruits, containing about 4.2 grams of protein per cup (165g). 2. **Durian**: This unique fruit has around 3.6 grams of protein per cup (243g). 3. **Jackfruit**: Provides approximately 2.8 grams of protein per cup (165g). 4. **Passion Fruit**: Contains about 5.1 grams of protein per cup (236g). 5. **Avocado**: While technically a fruit, it has about 3 grams of protein per cup (150g). These fruits can be a good source of protein in a fruit-based diet, but for higher protein needs, it's essential to include other sources such as legumes, nuts, and seeds.
Great video, I just got a truckload of avocados and mangos available at my nursery in central Florida. I got some avocados based on your past videos, Maria Black, Ora negro, Lula and more. Do you know when the Apmay will be available from Lara farms?
There is a few Avocado channels for that zone. I killed a bunch of avocados by not protecting them from the sun in Summer. Lila is one that is a slow growing my tree that has survived for me. Jacksonville zone 9a.
Fantastic and Brazos Belle are supposed to be two of the most cold hardy varieties, they both have reportedly survived temps as low as 10 degrees. I have both of them growing in containers at the moment but plan to eventually plant them in the ground and try to protect them from the cold as needed here in zone 8a NC.
Have you heard of GEM avocado will take over Hass avocado. Just like Hass took over Fuerte avocado long time ago. It is far better than Hass. Smaller tree. Low alternate bearing. Same as Hass or better in flavor. Could handle extreme heat/weather. Produce 30% more than Hass. The latest news at the avocado research center in Southern CA.
