It's becoming more and more common place for people to build their own home gyms, open private gyms, or even provide their own equipment to the public gym they belong to. One of the first pieces of equipment people buy is a good barbell. Today we take a look at the very popular Rogue Ohio Power Bar and see if it's the best barbell you can buy.

We have one of the 45 lbs versions at our gym, really enjoy using it, that is when I get to. It's like winning the lotto when I walk in and it's not being used to curl 10lbs in the squat rack.

Having used low grade commercial gym bars all my life I had no idea how much of a difference a good quality barbell can make until I put together my home gym. Makes sense though, it is without a doubt the piece of equipment we interact with most. I went with this bar (Black Zinc Rouge Power Bar) & really enjoy working out with it. Thank you for the review Brandon. I enjoy the low maintenance feature of the zinc (practically zero maintenance for a home set up) but it does feel different then all the other bars I used. Kinda wish I went with the standard bare steel for the more traditional feel even if you have to maintain it.

Love the OPB! I have the 45lb version with black zinc shaft and bright zinc sleeves. Only problem is Rogue didn't package mine along the entire length, so one side was open causing the sleeve to get a bit banged up. I called Rogue and they offered the option of replacing it or getting me 20% off, so I took the 20% discount and got something else with it. Overall, the bumps, dents and scratches are cosmetic, but don't effect the performance of my bar. They're just an eye sore that I could live with.

one thing to add, the smaller knuckles on the Ohio bar or the Eleiko don't make well for attaching bands. The bigger knuckles on the Westside or Texas power keep the bands farther away from the uprights

Hello again Brandon, again a good video from you; thanx! The Ohio Power Bar is excellent, probably the best bar most lifters CAN buy, but it is not "the gold standard;" Eleiko is still the "gold standard," though most lifters sadly cannot afford it. The Ivanko all-stainless steel OBX29SS and the Iron Wolfe all-stainless steel bars are also "golden." If you'd like to upgrade to a "platinum standard" on both bars and plates check-out Schnell, but it's really tough to export them out of Germany. Hope you gain that weight you've been wanting to gain. Lift hard, there is NO tomorrow.

Just have one Rogue bar and waiting for one that hasn't arrived yet week 5. During the wait, I ordered and already have three Solid Bar Fitness bars and all were amazing. Two Cerakote power bars and the Kansas bar. I like the aggressive knurling on the Kansas. Just giving other MADE in USA options.

Hey Brandon, you should note that the westside bar you have is the first version., Not the Westside power bar 2.0 (all black bar with green composite bushings). Rogue doesn't sell the original westside bar anymore. The westside 2.0 I believe has the same shaft as the ohio power bars, just a different sleeve and composite bushing, Where the original westside bar doesnt have bushings. I also have the original westside bar, and to me the knurling isn't more aggressive then my ohio power bars I have. I do notice that my bare steel ohio power bar is more aggressive then my zinc coated power bars, as the zinc slightly tames the knurl. It is nice that the collar to collar length isn't in IPF spec (slightly longer like you said) to help out not hitting the rack when walking out the squat.
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 7 лет назад
Good points, I would have included the specs of the 1.0 bar, but I had a hard time locating them. It's interesting to hear you say that about the knurling on your bars b/c mine is noticeably more aggressive with the Westside, even after 2 years of use. Perhaps some differences in quality control during production?
@RusselNguyen
@RusselNguyen 7 лет назад
Had my black zinc OPB for quite some time now and its been through hell and back. All kindzz of scrapes and bruises but it gives it some character. Didn't know the kilo version had longer sleeves though. Only complaint that I have against the bar is the chipping of the knurl. Of course the more you use it the knurl becomes slightly less aggressive, but it was chipping away on certain parts and gave me a splinter once. Maybe I'm just unlucky lol
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 7 лет назад
I've developed some patina/oxidation on my Westside bar, but haven't had any chipping of the finish yet. Seems my OPB is standing up even better, but I'll do a follow up if it does happen.

I'll probably upgrade to the $275 Power bar when my current bar becomes too beat up. I guess you would be better off using the bigger collar bar for squats and bench, leaving the smaller collar bar for deadlift. You can get more plates on, and also the weight is slightly closer to the center. Obviously only makes sense for a stiff bar. For a DL bar you'd want the opposite.

Responding to every comment...you baller. For my home gym, all my major equipment is rogue. Sometimes seems a bit expensive when I purchase it, but every time I open the box I always retract my statement and am exceptionally pleased with their equipment, build quality, and customer service. One q. Does the Beyoncé work out at home with you/Does she use this bar? I'm a bit worried mine might hate me if this is THE bar I go with and she bloodies up her hands. She does the basic movements as well but is not PL driven.

While Rogue isn't cheap, I'd much rather pay for the quality you get after seeing my friends order more budget friendly alternatives and see the craftsmanship that comes with them. Beyonce doesn't train at home often, however I bought her a regular Ohio Bar that has less aggressive knurling.

just discovered this channel today, very nice content. i guess you can still consider me a novice lifter but i have a fitness gear half rack with the fitness gear 300lb olympic barbell set and I've just about outgrown it so i'm looking to upgrade to a better bar. my barbell has pretty weak knurling, how is it adjusting to a more aggressive kind? also i heard fitness gear weights tend to have a slightly larger hole than more professional olympic style weights, i can't imagine that would have a noticable affect being only a mm difference but could it be a problem?
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 5 лет назад
I don't think the OPB is too over the top personally (unless you get a bare steel bar), I think you'll find it quite nice actually. Wouldn't worry about the weights either, being too big is better than being too small in this case.

Yeah that's the tough part of being a gym owner I imagine. For the average gym goer, they don't realize how expensive and nice some bars can be, so they treat them like garbage and they get beat up pretty badly. How does the IPF Rogue Power Bar compare to Eleiko Powerlifting Bar in terms of quality ? Thanks :)
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 5 лет назад
Quality is up there, the Eleiko is much more stiff however and has a more aggressive knurl IMO. But then again it's 3x the price, so I'd still likely suggest the OPB for most.

About to purchase this bar, is the stainless Steel version(45lb) worth the extra 100$? I know they say that the knurl is better with the stainless shaft, but I’ve never used a power bar before. Will I be missing out if I get the zinc shaft? I live in Virginia Beach so the climate isn’t too extreme. Thanks for the review.

In light of the new SS version... Would you still opt for the zinc? Any experience with SS bars? Has the zinc on your bar worn?

I think for most it makes sense to get the black zine due to SS being $100 more expensive. Mine hasn't worn, but I take good care of it.

suggest a bar that is good for a medium Olympic lifts as well as full time power lifting
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 7 лет назад
That's kind of tough b/c a WL bar is usually 28mm and you want some whip to it. A PL bar is 29mm and you want it to be stiff. Since you said medium WL and fulltime PL, I might suggest the Rogue B&R bar.

Is the knurling on the Rogue Westside Power Bar 2.0 as aggressive as in the old version? Which one is more aggressive, Westside PB 2.0 or Ohio Power Bar? Thanks. :)
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 4 года назад
The 2.0 is not as aggressive. If you compare the 2.0 black zinc to the OPB black zinc, the WPB is slightly more aggressive, but just know black zinc dulls the knurling slightly on both.

How well does this bar work for powercleans; considering it's aggressive knurling and stiffness?
@BasementBrandon
@BasementBrandon 7 лет назад
I think ideally for that you want might a bar with a bit more whip in that case. A lot of weightlifting bars also will use ball bearings instead of bushings like these PL bars have, so that you can more easily get under the weight as you pull the bar up.
@Matt-xi8zr
@Matt-xi8zr 7 лет назад
I do the main power lifts and power cleans. I guess there's not a bar that is ideal for this. Getting two bars would be nice. But I'll likely get the Rogue B&R bar and not worry too much about its performance for power cleans. It too has center knurling. I haven't found a good multi purpose bar with center knurling that I like. The Matt Chan bar knurling is set too wide for me.

@BasementBrandon

Speak to the managers. If they won't consider it, speak to other people in the gym who are interested in powerlifting and get a collection going. If you get 10-20 people to chip in for a bar, it can be pretty cheap.

@TheJackal159
@TheJackal159 7 лет назад
Brandon Campbell When I compete I use a Texas Deadlift bar, so I find when I do stiff bar pulls I still prefer a little bit of whip. Also the Texas Powerbar is a little bit thinner, but it is noticeable, which I prefer for bench and deadlift. The Ohio bar is better for squats though, but I use a Texas Squat bar for that. However, if I competed in the IPF, I would definitely prefer the Ohio bar.

Harsha Bandreddi it’s more aggressive than a regular gym bar. However it’s not what I would consider super aggressive. The bare steel or stainless will give you the best feel here though as there’s not a coating like cerakote or black zinc
