Randy, I believe two things have happened that have decimated our bass. I primarily fish in eastern Oklahoma and Lake Fork in Texas. I truly believe the bass tournament post release mortality rate has always been so much higher than people thought, and now that there is a tournament every week and weekend it has taken its toll. In 1985, I could stay in Caney Creek for three days, never leave it, and catch at least one seven-pound bass per day. Now, on Lake Fork, a seven is a big deal for a 3-day trip. SOOO many tournaments even after June has killed a ton of bass over the years that the poor lake cannot keep up. I think they are discovering now that even when great lengths are taken to preserve the life of a tournament bass, they still die within a few days of release. The second thing, and one I wish you would do a video about, is how lakes today that used to be country lakes are now urban lakes, managed for people instead of bass.

Another factor to consider is the removal of natural habitat. Elimination of grass, removal of lay downs on some lakes has taken its toll. In the mid-eighties the Potomac river was full of hydrilla. You could catch 25 bass a day in the 3-5 pound range. Had one day of a five fish 32 pound string. Lake Gaston (NC-VA) had hydrilla and the fish population grew to the point you could catch large numbers of good fish. Then they killed all the grass. Numbers and size were significantly reduced. DNRs could take a lesson from Texas. Not say Texas lakes are not under assault, but at least they make a significant effort to make bass fishing better considering the increase of anglers and tournaments.

Hi Randy! I think that people that wasn't alive 40 years ago has no clue how good the fishing was back then. The younger aaaaaaa I guess you could call them fishermen come to the lake with what they know and that's electronics. They believe that this is the best time ever for fishing and when they get older lets say 60 they too with then and only then understand how good the fishing USED to be. Thanks Randy! Keep up the great content. 💯

Randy....consider this. My long time BASS fishing buddy (74 years old now)born and raised in Central Florida, fished ALL the world famous lakes in Central Florida in the 60's, 70's, 80's, etc. up to today. His Dad was a land Developer and built large homes on The Maitland Chain, Harris Chain, Kissimmee Chain, etc. Don (when he was a teenager) would take out his Jon Boat out and fish all these lakes and daily would catch 8, 9 ,10 plus largemouth Bass on a routine basis. Don shared some incredible stories of catching 30 to 40 pound limits frequently. Then, slowly but surely, every year the weight numbers would slowly shrink. Today, it's such a joke - there are so many fishermen on these famous lakes it makes you crazy !!! Who ever thought that a 1.5 pounder down here in paradise would be part of your 5 fish limit ???

Roland Martin is in his 80’s and still fishes all the time. Recently I saw him catch a 1 pounder and smile like it was the first/biggest bass he ever caught. He just loves catching bass. That magic is lost when it is only about the competition. Sadly, many people are driven by being better than the next guy and the tournament mindset leads to inconsideration on the water. To this day, Roland will ask what you’re catching them on and he’ll change lures. You would think he’s a know-it-all but he’s not.

@@Jake-ky9edOkeechobee like a lot of lakes has gone up and down and been from great to mediocre several times in my life. I grew up in north Alabama. As a kid, Pickwick was so good that I couldn’t dream of anywhere else. Dad tried to tell me it was a cycle lake but I didn’t get it. I’ve since seen it terrible and then great again at least 4 different times. In the early 2000’s it was sucking so bad a 5 fish limit of dinks was a big deal. Lol About 10 years ago I weighed in a 42.7 pound sack anchored by a 13.5. and only had one under 7. Other lakes around here were doing well too. I was talking to a good friend of mine I grew up fishing with, you might know his name, Timmy Horton, about it and I said, “You know, except for maybe those few years when me and dad and you were killing them back in the day, I think there’s more big fish now than ever. He didn’t even hesitate, “I know there is,” he said. I’ve also seen Guntersville and Wheeler cycle just about as bad at different times too. It was great for a while in the 70’s I know just from listening to stories dad told, but I don’t fully agree with Randy that fishing was just better everywhere because there were so many more fish. I’ve seen too many lakes fall off and come back… I have hope those cycles will continue, but I have little doubt that even some of that was due to tournaments and tourism after them. So many tournaments have an impact and the technology has had an impact. For sure. Just improved down imaging changed the ledges here drastically in a very short time. FFS has increased pressure on those fish even at times we thought they were inactive before. I don’t know if this is the thing the lakes can’t cycle out of or whatever, but I am concerned. After I used it for a while myself and really started figuring it out, I agree with him, I wish we could go back to the way it was. It was so fun at first, and I could target fish I didn’t know existed before. But… the more I am successful using it, the less enchanted I am with it. That should be the opposite. Even if the lakes stand up to it better than I can imagine, I still wish we could go back.

Maybe, for once, just once, you could have some data to back up what you say. Then we could talk about it. The Missouri Department of conservation writes on their webpage regarding Table Rock Lake, “Fishing for black bass should be excellent in 2024. Largemouth bass are plentiful throughout the lake as a result of the high lake levels over the past several years. An abundant year class of largemouth bass was produced in 2020 and these fish should reach the minimum length limit of 15 inches by spring 2024. Quality largemouth bass are present in the lake as well. The percentage of largemouth bass greater than or equal to 15 inches was 28% throughout the reservoir during the spring, 2023 electrofishing surveys.”

You're clearly not listening. In the 80s and 90s a 10lb bass was what you needed for big bass. Now its about 5lbs and some times even a 4lb bass could do it. Its not just about the numbers but also the quality.

Exactly! I’ve been saying the same thing on this channel every time Randy does one of his rants about FSS. Tournaments need to be banned to no more than 1/month per body of water, period. If randy is correct then the ONLY question is why? Obviously it can’t be FFS since that has only been around about 2 years. Unregulated tournament growth has been around for 40 years. So which is it? Pretty sure it’s unchecked tournament growth … maybe we need to start a YT channel called “Recreational Bass Fishermen Unite - Ban All Tournaments” …. Let’s all stop supporting pro fisherman YT channels and support guys like Mikey Balzz

An earlier comment mentioned how catch and release has dropped substantially since the 'rona hit. In my area of Florida, which is mainly smaller lakes, this is noticeably true. My buddy's (who is a strict catch and releaser, like myself) father in law is a prime example. He goes out nearly every day, and every bass he catches ends up in the freezer, whether it's a pound and a half, or 8 pounds. Another problem here is that, it's not bad enough that nearly every decent size lake is surrounded by houses, or in the process of being surrounded by housing developments. The people in those houses bitch and moan to the County and State about the ugly weeds blocking their waterfront, so spraying is almost non-stop.

For me where I spend the summer, it is walleye that get decimated, spawn fishing, tournaments, thousands of boats every weekend going for walleye, and a population around the area that goes out every day probably hundreds of boats. Perch are all caught, as they migrate to deeper water, in the nets of the Indians. The good news is, that, maybe at that same time, but not the same areas there might be a dozen bass fishermen. So I have taken up bass fishing.

I would like to canvass population studies, then look at all of the variables that have an impact on fish populations. Where I live in Central Florida - I will check with FWCC to determine what their research demonstrates. I do concur, however that tournament clubs should consider self regulating in conjunction with other clubs to reduce impact to our resources - as a group of anglers we can do it better than our legislators. As far as livescope or FFS - I don’t care either way - I can load a boat with quality bass anywhere I fish without it. My cheap tin Tracker rig and basic $99 Lowrance has beaten many competitors with all the boom equipment in local tournaments. Randy - I really appreciate your perspective.

The problem with fishing is the same problem in the hunting industry, the word sport. Fishing and hunting is an activity, not a sport. People turned it into a sport for financial reasons and when money gets introduced into something it ruins the foundation, principles, the very core of the things we love and enjoy. The decline of the outdoor industry started when the words sport and industry were put with them.

Aaron martens, Ish, etc all knew Bob was the Delta king. Carved out a very special niche and never left the Delta fishing 300+ days a year on one body of water! The stories of that fisheries decline are shocking from Bobby who lived his entire life on that place and finally threw in the towel…. Sad

Fishing pressure has moved most these fish off the bank to more suspended and nomadic nature. Every spring all those fish are still in the lake and get caught because they’re shallow and more easily accessible. All those fish are still in the lake the rest of the year. It's not just bass, there's been an all-out assault on all game species since covid. My lake used to have a huge population of smallmouth, largies, spots, walleye, wipers, trout, crappie (w&b), all four cat species and more besides. And I target each at different times. This year there was a noticeable decline in all these populations, even bluegill and shad schools seemed smaller than I've ever seen. I'm hoping this is a temporary setback as I talked to a ton of disappointed anglers who were all having a hell of a time catching anything, maybe if a bunch of them are discouraged enough to leave the rods in the garage for a few seasons the populations will bounce back.

Yea, covid had a massive effect on fisheries. Every body of water here has basically been fished out if it's accessible. Tournaments hurt as well, but the reality is that as food got more expensive, more people have turned to free food from our lakes and ponds. It's gotten to the point where I can't even take my young son out for some easy fishing anymore. Yea, he's got a father who knows how to grind out fish, but his attention span in the heat, with mosquitos and gnats is much shorter when the bites aren't there as much to keep his attention. My only hope is that all the idiots who took up fishing during covid lose interest because there just aren't enough fish to go around, and they go back to whatever it is that they used to do.

I fish SML in VA and it could be 1 to 4 or five tournaments going off every weekend day and night. look at how many fish are brought to the scales every weekend, taking them from where they live to a another part of the lake all year long. The lakes are seriously over fished. I used to catch double digit bass when I was a kid fishing from the bank and didn't even know what I was doing. This was back in the late 80s early 90s. Then I join the military and didn't really fish for about 30 years. Now I have been fishing in a boat and still haven't broken 5lbs. Had one when I first went out that was 5-7lbs and it got off. Other than that fish it has been tough just catching a bass that is over 3lbs. I don't think it is just forward facing sonar. It's just over fishing and too many tournaments killing fish. We need to have a catch and release similar to how the kayak guys do it. No tournaments during the spawning season. We need to come up with ways to let these fish recover. I would like to see a program like what Texas is doing and I would even be willing to pay extra for fishing licenses. Maybe even have a specific fishing license just for bass fishing?

Randy, maybe we should be talking about putting more fish into the lakes in MO. In California they stock the lakes on a constant basis. I was there when Castaic was created. I watched as they planted fish in both Castaic and Casitas lakes. They thrived and produced some of the largest bass ever. Maybe our state is not doing such a great job at taking care of our lakes???? Blame the right people. Catch and release started a long time back and now they say we are releasing too many fish back and should take a few more. Not in Table Rock and Stockton anyway. Fellows Lake is a complete bust and needs stocking but will probably never get any extras without pressure from us the fisherman.

I believe that the rainbow trout stocking program in California lakes is what helps contribute to the healthy and big largemouth in the lakes California DFG stock... but the fishing pressure is so heavy today the numbers are just way lower overall than in previous years. I agree that tournament fishing has decimated bass, crappie, walleye, populations nationwide.

We need to try and educate the new anglers on catch and release. Back in the day that was a very common stinging you don’t hear it that much now. These new fisherman may not know this is not an unlimited resource!! We need to help educate them. There’s lots reason fish populations are down. Way too many tournaments but the fish eaters are a big part of it. If you don’t catch and release you can’t catch them again.

Randy I am subscribed to your channel , but don't comment often this could be the only time actually . I fish the Tennessee River area Wilson lake and Pickwick often with my brother n law in 2018 and 19 we won 15+ tournaments nothing major 15 to 30 boat jackpot Saturday deals year round my brother n law is a fantastic finesse Ned rig guy I fish more jerkbait , jig ,spinner bait power fishing guess you could say it's just what I'm pretty good at so we make a good team usually . Long story short we have won very little placed some but fishing has been inconsistent for us we aren't ffs guys but in my opinion it's we are fishing around less fish especially quality fish I don't have data to back my opinion but I don't think our skills diminished that much in 4 years we aren't fishing around as many fish and its a sad but true issue in my opinion.

There are many variables that have been a detriment to our fisheries across the country. One, that gets overlooked the most, is the ( dare I say ), these wave/wake boats. These boats and their waves have deteriorated our shore lines here in AZ, that has wreaked havoc on the foliage that once produced the forage that shad and other species alike once thrived on. This, along with bass having to search more for the schooling bait has also reduced the quality of bass in our fisheries. This is only one of the many issues. Another, is the gross number of tournaments per weekend. During covid, most lakes in Az were shut down except for one. With all tournaments being moved to that location, almost every weekend there were 2 sometimes 3 tournaments on any given weekend. Since then, the local derbies have been multiplying. That, and the pressure not to mention FFS, have only compounded the problem. States need to intervene and limit how many tournament permits are awarded. Give our lakes nation wide a breather. Add to that, perhaps outlaw wave boats completely since there is proven evidence of the Eco-system being damaged. Either way, something needs to be done across the board from pro levels down to the local levels.

Im still catching 15-23lb bags of fish the conventional way beating the bank and doing well in tournaments here up north on podiums and top 10 finishes. And i still use livescope when needed as a tool but it hasnt ruled out every tournament. Fisherys change, the amount of anglers has change eith moreninterest then ever before. Ecosystems change. We also have better baits and lures then ever before with innovation then the ol spinnerbait. Like you said before in many of your videos, age plays a big factor on performance and stubborness and not adapting and learning. For him being 70 years old, i would understand him saying his tradition ways dont work anymore. Make him 30 years old again and im sure he would adapt quicker then ever with a agile mind and body.

Same up here for me in MN, WI and Mi. Many 20+lb bags all year and rarely see another boat on the water let alone a bass angler. Unless you always hit the super well known lakes like the mille lacs, tonka, certain smallie fisheries in northern mi and Wisconsin then you will be fine and will be able to pound big. bags of bass.

I fished with an old guy who was the real deal. On Terry's level most likely not but he was a master that never used sonar in his life....other than what had been stored between his ears after decades of fishing. The man made his own lures and they were crude looking but he knew the fish , the conditions and situations that were presented to him and applied that to those lures and he was a fish catching machine. New waters and lakes presented very little challenge to the man who did not use lake maps ,charts or heaven forbid GPS. Time had put the hound in him and above all a great respect for the fish he loved. I had the pleasure of fishing and the teachings of a true fisherman. A very rare breed and I have no doubt about what his opinion would be about those that lean on forward facing sonar.

Randy … why is there not more fish hatcheries that can replenish lakes that need that sort of help? I’m sure you know Athens Texas is home to one of the leading hatcheries in the south. It would be great to spend some pod time to promote that type of work they do there with regards to what you speak of often! My Dad was part of an effort to duplicate what they do in Athens up on or near lake Cooper. The group lobbied the state legislature and came very close to success with funding. Think 9/11 in part hurt funding and unfortunately never had the push to try again. It just makes sense tome that tournaments should have more of a requirement to replenish … just like cutting down a forest and replanting in more access! Just a thought!

Bass mortality from tournaments have a few factors. Its way worse in the summer. The other being that there are a ton of clueless anglers out there that dont know a thing about or care about fish care. Bass mortality in general has numerous factors. Water quality, herbicides, removal of habitat, drops in forage, people taking bass home to eat legally and illegally. In my area specifically the population of people has boomed in the last decade. To me that means more people in the area fishing, and more people taking fish home. I do agree however there are certain fisheries being way over fished. I live by Chickamauga for years and the amount of tournaments on that lake every year was insane. But to be honest, i havent noticed a shortage of people catching giant bass or even numbers. I think trying to blame tournaments as the ultimate reason behind bass population declining shouldnt be the case. Techniques not being as prevalent as they once were, sure. Bodies of water change and so do the fish. Are new species of bass being shocked? (F1s)? Are people just stuck doing the same old thing and notnwilling to fish new ways to catch bass? Bass are smarter than people give them credit for imo.

Bass Tournaments have gone through an evolution process similar to NASCAR, more than one element has negatively impacted pro fishing as well as NASCAR. Some are self inflicted problems by the organizations and technology, others are unforeseen issues that can not be reversed. One thing in life that is constant is change, some good and some for bad.

Hey, hey Randy, I don’t have a boat and I’m never fished the bass tournament in my life but to hear you talking about this OG this old head that does it the right way say that he just couldn’t do it anymore that pisses me off because I remember getting up on Sunday morning and watching Virgil Ward on TV Jerry McInnis on TV Orlando Wilson on TV. All of these guys caught fish and they did it the right way fishing as we knew it then it’s over Randy the young guns. All they want is a check they don’t care about the sport, they don’t care about you they don’t care about the ones that came before and there’s nothing anybody can do Randy it’s gonna change that and it’s unfortunate that all we have left to go to are the old archives of the tournaments back in the 70s 80s and 90s and early 2000s I watched the oh one classic today on RU-vid man that’s fishing dude but that’s gone we know that whoever wins the classic this year will win it because of sonar and that is truly unfortunate

Why doesn’t Randy ever give actual data to back up his comments. Where I live in oregon we see a lot of tournaments on different bodies of water. My passion is fishing whether tournaments or recreational. What I notice the most is our lakes and reservoirs go through cycles. Mostly when crappie populations are very high the bass population seems to decrease and vise versa. I don’t believe ffs really has much to do with it. Just the simple fact that so many more people are fishing now than ever before and most of which can’t control themselves on what they keep. Please show some data that it is the tournament fishing that is causing the decline in bass populations and not the recreational fishing
