For this second installment in S.K.O.A's 'Best Beginner' series Sam is joined by his son Harry and friend John for an easy day hike to the Rawhiti Cave located close to the settlements of Takaka and Pohara in Golden Bay, New Zealand.
This is a great walk if you are new to tramping, have young children or just don't want to walk too far yet get to experience one of the biggest and best open cave environments in New Zealand.
The first 30 mins of the track is flat and along the edge of Dry River. Dry River is typically dry and safe but if there is wet weather, then can be impassable and should not be attempted.
The second 30 mins of the track climbs steadily (steepish) but on a straightforward track, particularly when dry, up to Rawhiti Cave which is around one million years in the making.
The cave is extensive being around 40 metres wide and 20 metres high and is home to a huge number of stalactites and interesting flora. There are information panels detailing the history of the cave including its discovery on private farmland and as a tourist walk destination in the early 1900s.
All in all a short but hugely rewarding hike
