I appreciate this discussion of cost effective bikes. Yes the Cannondale was over the top but it seems the rest of the editors are focused on great riding bikes for reasonable costs. Very very few of us gain any real benefit from DuraAce or Red. Seeing an editor’s pick on 105 11 speed mechanical warms my heart. Nice video and I appreciate the range of bikes that were discussed.

Good on Anne, Matt and Ben for putting forth such reasonable and level headed picks !. a really nice bike for what 90% of what most gravel riders want. not a ~$10,000 T-lab cannondale.... >__< It IS easy to love expensive things - but TBH after a while of riding most of us (guilty) have put more into their bike than they strictly need. The $1k - 3k proice range has such AMZING bikes - you DON'T need a $5k+ bike !! if someone is watching this thinking they want to get into road or gravel , ( or whatever) then a more reasonable pic seems way more in line.

Your channel is not only an awesome resource on bikes, but furthermore your cool-headed, level attitude, your non-flex athleticism, and how active you are - is a source of inspiration for me and many I am sure - kudos and keep it up. My favorite gravel bike is trusted-and-true Giant Revolt. I have a revolt advanced 3 and revolt 1 - the latter daily driven and upgraded parts. I went and got a Defy 105 Di2 - which cannot wait to ride more after weather improves - as a middle ground between gravel-capable but more performance oriented Best wishes for 2024🎉

Bought my Lauf Seigla Rigid in large part because of your review. Great bike. I ended up springing for the weekend warrior (rival build with power meter included). It ended up being almost the same price as if I’d bought the core wireless axs build and bought the power meter add on separately. Overall I’ve been really impressed with everything about the bike.

Thx for the multiple insights from the experts. Anne-Marije’s insight about the Trek Checkpoint ALR is especially clever and makes you think.Most of us are not Pojacar or Van der Poel and It is only in out heads that we are tempted to copy the pro’s! I think affordable bicycles , in this case aluminum,is a good option for the average cycling tourist and upgrades such as wheels add enormous value over time. Maybe stop the snobbery and enjoy cycling and the outdoors again! Grtz from Belgium! 🇧🇪

My best bike of 2023 is the '21 Specialized Diverge. I ride both road and gravel, so a 2x bike and multiple wheelsets allows me to do all the riding I want. I like it so much that I bought a second one. One is set up with road fenders while both have clip on aerobars and top tube bags. Works for me. Also kudos for picking a reasonably priced bike!

Thanks for focusing on some bikes that peeps are more likely to buy. The high end stuff is cool, but a lot of us are unwilling, or unable to spend that kind of dough on bikes. Like a lot of bike dorks, I've got a garage full of bikes. I have just as much fun riding the lower end ones as I do riding the more expensive ones. Bikes are just fun, and they don't need to be high end to have a great day out.

excellent video Ben! 100% agree with you on the Lauf suspension fork. I just sold my True Grit because I just felt like I was loosing some efficiency but I love the company! Maybe I will give the rigid a try. I have been riding the Canyon SLX Grail with Di2 GRX and absolutely love that bike. It is the older version but I find it very comfortable for long rides. My only complaint is the seat post is driving me crazy with its constant creaking. I had 3 separate shops try and get rid of it but 3 rides and it comes right back. Kills me. I also have an Endurace and it doesn’t seem to have the same problem. Anyways, love the work you do and Merry Christmas!

Interesting selections. IMO, the Super Six is bike of the year: very light, very fast, extremely well made, great paint options. The Lab71 version is as much of a waste of money as SWorks, the hi-mod versions of the Super Six are the way to go IMO. The Scott Foil is pretty amazing too, a dedicated aero race bike that's also extremely light and comfortable. I'd also mention the Emonda ALR which is a great inexpensive aluminum race bike, the new Canyon Ultimate which is very similar to the prior generations but remains a fantastic value and one of the best riding all-around race bikes out there and finally the Specialized Allez which is a very versatile, well designed and well priced bike. For a niche bike, I'll mention the De Rosa Stettanta which has a gorgeous Pininfarina-designed frame and paint scheme and apparently rides very well. Looking forward to 2024, I'd love to see a return of uncompromised aero race bikes. I'll be interested to see if Cannondale intro a new SystemSix and (unlikely but maybe?) Specialized drops a new Venge. We'll see.

Had a cervelo Aspero apex 1 which I got on a big sale this year & I really enjoyed…beside the sizing. Falling in between the 54/56 I went with a 56 but did not enjoy the shorter stem handling. Going back I would have gone with the 54, an accepted the spacer stack. I would love to have a specialized crux. I really enjoy the look of the frame, the reviews seem to endorse that It can be a road bike as well as a gravel bike but, The price is just so unrealistic. I might look into the lauf rigid. How do you feel it would preform with some 700x30 road tires on the occasional road jaunt? If trek offered a Domane AL frameset for sale, honestly I would go that route for an affordable all arounder bike. Even have considered buying one and porting parts onto it!

Ben, I've been following you since your days at BikeRadar and alwaysv valued your straightforward honesty with bike reviews. As someone in the market for a new gravel bike this spring, I'm really intrigued by the redesigned Merida Silex and realy wish they'd be sold in the US. Do you or anyone know why Merida won't consider bringing their bikes to the US? Is Specialized truly preventing them from selling their bikes on US soil?
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 6 месяцев назад
Thank you. Short answer: I don't know the latest info, but can try to find out. As you may recall, Merida purchased 49% of Specialized back in the day as the California brand was on the brink of bankruptcy and Merida was producing a lot of their bikes. How that arrangement affects distribution (and production) today... I don't know. I will ask. Ben, Ben, Ben. I got the white rigid weekend warrior wireless about 6 months ago. I'm due for a wheelset upgrade to lighten things up and improve ride quality. The aluminum wheels are nearly 1900g. What rims would you put on her? I'm thinking ENVE AG25s since they are affordable, light, USA made, and "protected for life." The internet science says it's pointless getting aero wheels for a bike that rides with 40-50mm tires as the yooge. You'd need rims 80mm+ deep for aero gains at those widths!

@TheRidewithBenDelaney 6 месяцев назад
Sure. It's just a personal preference, but I don't like the undamped suspension that you can't lock out or adjust in any way. Riding steady in the saddle over rough stuff at slow speeds feels nice. Standing up does not; it pogos. Also riding it at higher speeds can be unnerving. I don't know how much the fork itself is, but you can certainly swap between suspension and rigid.

I am still looking forward to a more in depth review of the new Grail. I was a bit disappointed to hear from Canyon USA that the "Pro" bar stem option will not be available in the US... WTF? I am really looking for a bike with a longer reach/wheelbase than my Stigmata 3, as well as a shorter sea tube and lower BB, as I want a bit more compliance and stability at speed.
@plain-bagel
@plain-bagel 7 месяцев назад
Have you checked out the V4 Stig? I think it hits at least most of what you've mentioned?
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 7 месяцев назад
Really? I have asked Canyon for pricing and availability on the pro bar, but it's been crickets. Pretty limiting with no other option. I need to bug them some more. As @plain-bagel says, the new Stigmata has more progressive geo. And I'm a fan of the Revolt for a low bb, progressive geo but not sleepy handling, and a nice flex to the seatpost.

Yeah, but seems a little too extreme in terms of long and slack to me... It kinda seems like there might be some lack of good tracking during climbs, but maybe not...I am still considering it.@@plain-bagel

@@TheRidewithBenDelaney yeah, I sent them a message asking when the "pro" bar/stem would be available and got back an answer saying not in the US! They also mentioned that they were working on allowing customers to choose the bar/stem size, but that would not happen soon.

I rode SL7 with the rapide one piece bar and then back to back on the SL8 with rapide. The SL8 accelerates differently (better?) and climbs better. That’s the best way I can describe it. The cost to jump from 7 to 8 youtube says it’s not worth it…… I disagree.

I know nothing about bikes, especially gravel bikes. I look at bikes with an aesthetic, industrial design eye. For me, the Cannondale LAB71 is breathtaking... $15,000 breathtaking! The Fuji SL-A was a minimalist masterpiece too.

"Suspension takes away from the Purity". What does this even mean? Personally I can't stand riding a gravel bike without suspension. It's amazing what 40mm of give will do for the comfort of a gravel ride. I do understand the weight trade off though.

Simplicity of a rigid fork maybe? Having suspension means more maintenance and more things to worry about? Also sounds to me like gravel in the UK and USA means something different. US gravel looks a lot more difficult and may need a suspension fork.

Honestly, and with respect to you Ben because you're a great content creator, but there is nothing exciting here. Recommending the TOTL bike from the biggest bike manufacturers in the world is not what we're here for (or maybe that's just me)! Perhaps the bike industry is just not that exciting and we should just be riding bikes and not looking at bikes. The Vitus selection was helpful. Disagree with Trek entry level bike, the pricing at RRP is worse than competing brands that offer better specification for the same money. Thank you Ben

Ride the yTSzepter, won’t go back to a non-front-suspension gravel, it’s the SUV of bikes - fast and aero on tarmac - even with its very off-road gravel attributes. Even Dylan Johnson is sold on Gravel w the Szepter front suspension setup. Let’s face it gravel is approaching mtb pedigree: disc brakes, fat tires, suspension, but w aero bars. Just my 2c..

10 grand for a Trek, ‘how affordable it is’ are you serious, when did 10k become affordable? 2k is affordable, this is why bikes are so overpriced because somehow 10k became ‘affordable’.

You even gave a price span in the thumbnail..? I love your videos but this one was a dissappointment due to the click bait title.
