One of the worst-kept secrets in gravel is finally out - the new Canyon Grail gravel race bike launches and it’s been completely overhauled with new geometry, internal storage, a snap-on bag, a Universal Derailleur Hanger, and a range of models at the very competitive pricing that the German consumer direct brand is known for. And yes, yes, the double decker bar is no longer a thing.
The integrated bar that replaces it has a number of benefits, and you aren’t as completely locked in as before, but it does have its own set of limitations.
I did a video on the bike back at Unbound Gravel in June, where it was piloted to the wins of both the 200 and the 100-mile women’s races. Since then, we’ve been seeing it with a jumbled paint scheme at races around the world - including gravel worlds where Kasia Niewiadoma won on it on Saturday.
I got this bike under an NDA a couple of weeks ago, and have done a few hundred miles on it.
In this video, tell you what’s new, what’s different, how it compares to other gravel race bikes. What I like about the bike, what I don’t like, and what you should consider if you are considering buying one.

After watching your video i am really happy! You are after a really long search the only one who talks about the replaceability of the Stem and Handlebar ! Thank you very much!!!

Glad that was helpful. I am going to do a video on swapping the bar/stem - just waiting on Canyon to tell me pricing and availability info.

Funny how the geo which we thought wasn’t completely suitable is now the new best thing. This stiffer setup will no doubt give you some harsh feedback. I like that they have so new storage options but giving gravel riders an aero seat post over comfort is going to be interesting. I look forward to riding reviews on this model. The locked in cockpit is going to make some enemies.
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 10 месяцев назад
Hehe. Fair. The cockpit is interesting; I suspect many people can hop on, adjust their saddle height and fore/aft, and pedal off without issue. But the bike world has been telling (and selling) people to dial in their fit for so long, and this effectively takes the stance that a stock fit is all most anyone needs.

I received my Giant Revolt Advanced O 2023 in the lovely plum colour the same day this bike was released... For a few hours I was having a little bit of FOMO but quickly realised that the Revolt wins imho because of cables, tyre clearence, cockpit and overall comfort. At least I hope so.

Nice review. I like the idea of customising stem length and bar width at time of purchase, makes perfect sense. I really like the cockpit and aero Garmin mount. So cool. Gotta love Canyons constant innovation. I have the cheapest grail AL and it’s a great bike.

I’ve just had a test ride on this at Canyons HQ in Koblenz. I’m 188cm tall, 91.5cm inside leg,and although the geometry chart on the Canyon website suggests that I need a large the staff there told me that they recommend a medium as it’s a long bike. All of the staff said I spoke to said that in their experience everyone needs to go down a size. The medium felt like my Endurace large, both in position and handling. I tried a large and it felt enormous was not comfortable. I normally ride a 58 Specialized Diverge, and this felt so much more nimble and fast. The lighter weight probably makes most of the difference, but it felt good. I’m tempted, but I really want a mullet gearing with a 10-52 and 42 chainring. I love climbing and technical surfaces but I only have an FTP of 215, and at 66 I’m not going to get any fitter. The Crux may be an option but I’d like downtube storage and top tube mounts. The Enve Mog is another one I’ve looked at but haven’t ridden. Ben, you’ve ridden them all, how would you compare the Mog to the Grail? I’m looking for a fast gravel bike that can handle the rougher stuff and be comfortable on long rides (100km+),but I don’t want to go bikepacking .
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 9 месяцев назад
That is great that you can test ride at HQ. The MOG and the new Grail are similar now in some ways, like the MOG's 71.25 to the Grail's 71.5 head angles. Grail is longer wheelbase, and much longer top tube. MOG can take a 50mm tire to the Grail's 42mm. Depending on how rough and technical you want to get, that tire clearance factor may be the key part. I'm with you on no bikepacking. :-)

Regarding the complaint of not being able to select handlebar/stem sizes, I brought this up to a Canton employee at SBT. He assured me that it’s in the works to be implemented, but is a bit down the road. So hopefully that comes to fruition. Now for a wall of text The number one thing I’m stuck on is the bike’s wheelbase/reach. My 2XL Grizl is smaller in both departments than the new XL Grail, and that blows me away. Ben, if you have any experience with singletrack or something like a CX course with the bike, I would love to know your thoughts on how it handles aggressive turning. I was planning to buy this bike in a size down from my Grizl due to a better overall position for me being with an 80mm stem. The problem that creates for me, however, is the bike handling in a way that even the slightest turn of the bars causes me to nearly dump the bike. So seeing the geometry much larger with the cockpit being smaller has me scratching my head on what to do. I love everything else the bike has to offer, but man that 2XL is a long boi
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 10 месяцев назад
Will be interesting to see if they can pull off the pick-your-bar option. I get them wanting to simplify their shipping and warehousing, but they gotta understand that riders are interested in their own fit, not Canyon's streamlining. I'll do more riding on a variety of surfaces, roads/trails, and holler back. At first blush, it does feel more mountain bikey with the slacker/longer handling paired with a stubby stem.
@skibomber12
@skibomber12 10 месяцев назад
Hello TyTy, it seems as though you have put some thought into the geo of your bikes. Can I get your opinion on sizing? I am considering a Grizl, and cannons calculator puts me teetering between XL and XXL. I am 6’5”/36”inseam. I have been comfortably riding a 2019 checkpoint 61cm, but feel it is too small and upright.
@niklasdksalkin

I'm within 2 cm of fitting on the XL. Not keen on sizing up to the 2XL, way too big. Wish they offered a longer seat post

Great video, as usual. I found the aero bar option one of the bigger draws to this updated bike. I love the Ostro for maybe one of the best integrated clip-on options available, but don't love the max tire clearance on the OSTRO VAM. Love the additions to storage, don't love the stock bar widths either, but at least it's not 1.25" steerer; so glad to see them making the steerer 1.125" to allow third party, like maybe an ENVE or Black Inc cockpit or just separate stem/bar options. The inability of the AeroRoad is the main reason I haven't picked up that bike as my aero road option.

I've been experimenting with a mullet setup and it is making me wish more and more companies made all their bikes with UDH compatibility. Looking forward when road/gravel groupsets can utilize the performance benefits of the direct mount derailleurs :)

A Canyon owner x4 now, 3 MTBs and the Grizl. I have not had any real problems with the bikes out of the box or long term at this point. The value is phenomenal, bike shops can't compete. If you plan to ride long miles on their bikes, know your bike fit well, as you may have to size up or down depending on your body type if you fall between sizes. They have a 30 day return policy if you blow the size, so that is a peace of mind. Go Ben :). Western slope old guy

Press fit BB? Deal killer!
@barrowsworm1226
@barrowsworm1226 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Ben! I love the new geo, and the frame storage. I think one could fit 45s if needed, as long as it was not for muddy riding? I wish, wish, wish Canyon would consider selling the frameset (frame, post, integrated bar) packages for the CFR-I prefer to build up my own bikes to my preferred spec; at least for the top level frame. And you are right, online consumers should be able to pick their integrated bar/stem set up to suit at the time of order. But the price is so good on Canyons, I guess swapping out later is not too big a deal. I am currently on a Stigmata 3, but am looking for a new bike with bit longer wheelbase/reach, with a lower BB, for a bit more stability and a little more forgiving handling. This appears to offer that without being as radically "new school" as the Stigmata 4.

Great as always Ben. So stoked to see you got in the new Grail. Been waiting daily for this thing to drop! Finally! Definitely looking forward to the long term review. @TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 10 месяцев назад
Thanks. Like any gravel bike, it would be capable on the road. Two things to consider when putting on another wheelset with skinny tires: -a gravel bike's low BB will get even lower going from 40s to 28s or whatever, and that could be an inadvertent pedal strike in a corner -gearing might not be quite sufficient, depending on your preferences for group rides and such
@gerryl8310
@gerryl8310 10 месяцев назад
Didn't think of the BB being lower with 28's or 30's. Excellent catch. Thxs. I am stuck btw new Grail and S Works Crux. I know it's big $ no matter what but I'm old/this will be my splurge/one and done. Quick question, feel free to shoot from the hip... compliance/smoother ride... new Grail or Crux? Thanks, Ben, I really appreciate your taking us into your garage for a look-see at new bikes and new components and what not. And with wins in Kansas and the Worlds, Canyon has already proven that bike is good and what's the new sales adage, Win in Kansas, ship yours anywhere. Something like that. And it is nice that bike can accept other bars and stems, stock ones seem too wide and better to have the option to swap. Please tell us more about the ride. 😀

Nice bike! Thanks for the video... I never got the whole integrated handlebar and stem thing in the bike Industry, feels like a solution for problem that doesn't exist.... It's interesting that they're moving to mountain bike geometry, however, I would suggest that the thing that holds a gravel bike back is not the geometry, its rubber on ground, so I wouldn't imagine you'll get the full benefits of mountain bike geometry with gravel tires so I would put this more in the bucket of marketing than absolute translatable performance results for ya bucks.

I love what they have done with internal storage and the bag. 1.1/8" steerer is cool. New seatpost design is good. Don't love that they use bb86. Excellent for Shimano, but DUB bearings in 41mm frames is not good for longevity or performance.

@AndreasHappyfarm
@AndreasHappyfarm 10 месяцев назад
@@barrowsworm1226 better, but there’s still no getting around the physical limitations of a ø28,99mm spindle in a ø41mm frame. Bearing size is an issue no matter what. Canyon could go to a pf386evo. I've worked as a mechanic for 15 years and much prefer pressfit.
@barrowsworm1226
@barrowsworm1226 10 месяцев назад
I have put 4000 miles on the bearing size which BB Infinite uses with no issues with a Dub spindle, the BB is still totally smooth (1 clean and re-grease), so I am sold that this approach is a viable solution for Dub spindles in a PF 41mm shell. The 1 piece BB shells also use an internal bearing sleeve which avoids the problem of some users applying excess pre load.@@AndreasHappyfarm

It only comes with 175's. So, I knew when ordering I was going to change them Funny thing, when I assembled the bike, it actually had 172.5's. So, their mistake saved me time and money. Worst kept secret indeed. Been waiting for the official cover to come off the new Grail since Unbound. I have the older Grail CF SLX w/ Di2 which I am taking to Big Sugar next week. Really interested in hearing your thoughts on how this new one compares to something like the Revolt which I have experience with as my son has one with mech GRX. Have loved the features and value the older Grail offers but have grown to really enjoy the ride of the Revolt as it is more planted feeling versus the twitchiness of the older Grail. Also, Canyon customer service has been great in the 2.5 yrs I have had mine when needed which got me passed the DTC concerns. Looking forward to hearing your full-on review.

Excellent review as always. I ended up buying a 2020 Trek Checkpoint SL6 because of your great review few years ago. Now I'm looking a new gravel bike and this one is in my shortlist, and because of that, I'd like to ask you if this new Canyon "D shape" seatpost can be replaced by regular rounded one like it's doable in the Giant Advance Revolt and Canyon Grizl. Do you like better this new Canyon Grail or the Giant Revolt Advance? Thanks again for your great video and hope you can advise me in between the new Grail or the Giant Advance Revolt
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 10 месяцев назад
Thanks, Cesar. Checkpoint is still a great bike, I think. No, you're stuck with Canyon posts on this bike. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but certainly something to be aware of. Revolt vs Grail.... that's a tough one! I want to spend more time on this bike with bars that fit me better. The Revolt is a bit more comfortable with more flex in the post. Not a lot, but it's noticeable, I think. So the verdict... I will need a little more time for.

The inability to run a dropper post is a HUGE drawback and the one piece bar and stem rules out a suspension stem - I love my RedShift on rocky, bumpy surfaces. Aero profile also makes it a struggle fitting a bar bag. That, and the press fit BB make it a big no from me.

So the Grail is now longer/slacker than their supposedly more offroad oriented Grizl. Makes me think the Grizl is in need of a refresh. Also, I get keeping that low tire clearance differentiates it from the Grizl but it just seems unnecessarily limiting. They could have boosted it to 45mm and then bumped up the Grizl in its next refresh to something like 29x2.25 to make it more versatile for truly rough offroad adventuring.

I'm surprised that they're still hanging on to a press fit BB with a completely new model. It would make it much easier to service at home, especially for a DTC brand. I think they needed to go stiffer also because they already have the Grizl and didn't want too much product overlap. Digging: The bag, the storage options and that they kept the 1x and 2x drivetrains. I like the handlebar but I could see how it's limiting and can be a pain to work on at home. They seem to be taking the Apple approach to by offering lots of various add-ons for a cost. I'm wondering if SRAM AXS 2x would have been a better option than Di2 especially with the easy availability of the powermeters and being true wireless? Not loving: As mentioned BB, paint colors, and configurability. I wish they'd even go a bit further than letting you spec handlebar widths and stem length, how about wheels? I know this introduces more complexity on their end and rather than pumping out thousands of preconfigured bikes, they'd have to actually build them for a consumer but it makes happier customers. I'd also like to see at least a one side powermeter on the $5400 spec.

Nice thoughtful review. The old double bar was a sore spot, but since the entire front end of the OG Grail was built around it, I guess they were stuck. On this new one, it's another leap of faith witht he giant TT and stubby 70mm stem with overly wide bar. Hi Ben, who does it compare to the 3T Racemax you had in your videos before?
@3TZZZ
@3TZZZ 10 месяцев назад
Nice straightforward review. What a relief! Thanks Ben. …The new Grail is definitely a contender in the gravel race / all-road category now. However, the limitation on reach adjustment with those stock bars with only a 70mm! stem is too short for me. It’s not a mountain bike! My Cervelo Aspero in size 56 is 10mm shorter in the frame than a size M Grail, but I need a 100mm stem on the Aspero, leaving the stock Grail stem 20mm short. Big problem Canyon ...as if it’s only human beings' leg length that differs and not torso or arms! LOL. So much for being environmentally friendly, just throw away those fancy stock bars if they don't happen to fit!? Hmmm...

This seems to be a bike designed for pros competing in a limited series of races, who have a quiver of bikes to choose from. An aero seatpost is stupid and all gravel bikes should have a round seatpost that allows for the option of adding a dropper. The tire width, works for mad lads who are pushing at the front, but for the rest of us who will be riding this on various trails on the weekend, wider tires would have been nice. I just jumped on the site and nothing is in stock, which is pretty much always the case I look on their website.
@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 10 месяцев назад
Ah, I don't think it's just for pros. Definitely a competition- or speed-focused bike for sure, which can be a good option for folks who like riding dirt roads and don't want or need big tires. I think they're doing a good job of differentiation with the Grizl being the all-rounder/big tire/bikepacking/underbiking option.
@CrabgrassFarmer
@CrabgrassFarmer 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, the tire size is limited because they wanted to give the pros the ability to put a giant front chainring on, that we mortals will never be able to turn. But your tire size is limited by it nevertheless.

I think headtube angle in this case is not about it being race'y or not, and rather it is about the bike not behaving twitchy with this silly short stem. They should not name it Grail, because these are different bikes. Not only head tube is slacker but they also increased fork offset/rake. 1st gen Grail was a gravel close to an endurance bike, and 2dn gen Grail is a gravel near XC territory. I feel like their lineup is missing a most useful kind of gravel bike, and all-road build of Endurace does not fill this gap.

@@TheRidewithBenDelaney It has similar geometry to Grail gen 1 + all "adventure" features like large tire clearance, and mounting points everywhere. On bike with such geometry I would want to put ~35 mm tires, deep rims, and some nice aero bars (I don't care about aero I want my tops flat), which would make it look weird with its external cable routing and gaping empty space surrounding narrow tires.

@TheRidewithBenDelaney
@TheRidewithBenDelaney 10 месяцев назад
I actually quite like them. I have wanted to like other designs - riding Belgium farm roads=sweet; getting manure sprayed onto bottles=not so sweet - but the execution is never really great. Some have plastic half-domes that go over the nozzle. CamelBak has the little rubber covers, which look gray but are basically impossible to get back on with one hand while riding. This Canyon design is the best I have tried. The lid hinge dictates how you hold and drink, but it’s easy enough and you can close the lid with one hand. So yeah, I dig it. My wife and daughter have found the color an abomination, but I am sure there are others. 😁
@j159423
@j159423 10 месяцев назад
Yeah, I really hate drinking dirt and animal feces and usually just end up wearing a pack but it's a pretty constant distraction for me. I had high hopes for the CamelBak but was similarly disappointed. These look promising as they also appear to be made of a softer material - similar to the Specialized HydroFlo Purist which is my fav water bottle. I may have to get one to try it out even though $15 shipping on a $15 bottle sticks in my craw. Thanks!

Seems like a huge fail 42mm clearance and that looks REALLY tight at the rear. It'll be a nightmare in mud, and indeed was at the Unbound fiasco for some of the sponsored riders using it. People immediately commented on this is as soon as it broke cover in the Spring. It's mind boggling that Canyon went ahead with this. Also this is a really, really, really high reach frame, and without a steeper STA and slacker HTA of something like the BMC URS or Fezzari Schafer to compensate. Those very high up the ape index need only apply.
