Living here in Maui I deal with wind on the flats wading. Have used many rods. There is no one best . But as now I have been using the TFO Axiom 2 x . 8 weight. Very good power in the wind even with bigger flys . As for Accuracy well it’s about your casting skills. And that gets really good with practice. There’s no way around that. Love your web site. I rely on you guys about all the gear that comes out to help with my decision of what’s for my preference. Thank you and rock an roll. 🎣🎸

Solid choice for punching flies in windy conditions 👊

I do most of my bonefishing on Utila and Roatan islands in Honduras. For this I use a GLoomis Crosscurrent GLX 6wt. It’s perfect for the small to medium bones there and it’s been my experience that the wind isn’t bad there. Many of the Bahamas videos I’ve seen show a lot more wind.

Agree with about 90% of what Ben opined about which rod weights to use for bonefish. Keys and Seychelles, a 9 weight is a darn handle tool. Most other bonefish places, though, an 8 weight is a fantastic all-around choice. It could be a little light on medium and larger permit. It’s a great choice for baby tarpon.

Was in the Bahamas a few weeks ago on Andros. We were fishing #2 Gotchas all week. When the wind got up a bit, especially on the west side, a 9wt. was mandatory. I could see a 6wt in Mexico with little to no wind.

That's some radical tips you're giving Ben. But I like it rather than going for the recommendation from 10+ years ago 😃
@richarde1355
@richarde1355 Год назад
But, as Ben noted, the rod weight should be a function of the size of the quarry, the conditions (wind), and the weight/size of the fly.

I pack three rods for a bonefishing trip: 7 wt Loomis NRX; 8 wt Scott Meridian for windy days; and 9 wt Meridian for the occasional shot at a permit. I agree that a 6 wt is plenty of rod for bonefish, especially for tailing fish on the Belizean atoll where you were fishing.

I fish the Keys a lot, I could never get away with a 6wt there, as much as I’d like to. 8 or 9wt is the general rule. The winds too strong, and the fish too big. The Bahamas or the Yucatán, I’d like to try using a 6 definitely!
@Tridentflyfishing

When the conditions allow it, the 6wt is a blast in the salt!

Finally someone that is like me, a 6 wt will handle bonefish up to double figures easily. I always use my SAGE TCR 6 wt on my trips for bonefish and similar fishing. If the caster is good there is no problem to present a flie into some decent winds.
@Tridentflyfishing
@Tridentflyfishing 2 года назад
Definitely a fun rod for bones!
@richarde1355
@richarde1355 2 года назад
Using an 8 weight, in lieu of a 6, many times is because of the weight of the fly and/or trying to turn over a leader in windy conditions. Also, I have a TCR 6 weight, and it's really unfair to call that rod a 6; it's really more like a 7+ weight rod.
@NiclasGudmundsson
@NiclasGudmundsson 2 года назад
@@richarde1355 Well I disagree that this is a 7+ rod. the 9 foot TCR is really well classed, but the 9,6 foot rod is definitely a #7. The 691 rod is a fast rod with a very progressive action that is for a new fisherman a little harder to use with a light line.
@richarde1355
@richarde1355 Год назад
@@NiclasGudmundsson I own 691-4 TCR. I also own a Loomis GLX, a Sage SP, a TFO Axiom, a Diamondback Backwater, Orvis TLS, and more, all in 6 weights. The TCR is without a doubt the most powerful and stiff out of all my 6 weights and is at least one line weight underrated. When that rod came out it was pretty well known throughout the industry the TCR rods were at least one line weight underrated. Stiff, powerful rods that could carry a lot of line, but also an action that wasn't very forgiving for most anglers.

6wt is my all time favorite. Just love the feel of a good 6 and they work for everything lighter salt work. However i do have a H3F 7wt for those heavier lines and windy days

Ben ... enjoyed the video and I think people under estimate the use of 6 wgts in saltwater ... how about a video comparing the different 6 wgt rods for salt ... say Sage Ignitor, Salt R8, Orvis Helios 3D, Scott Sector, Thomas&Thomas Sextant, Winston Air Salt, Winton Alpha plus ... that would be an interesting video

Hi Dom, thanks for watching! You really can't go wrong with either rod for bonefishing... especially when fishing lighter lines and flies. Both offer great feel and feedback at important flats fishing distances... but neither are absolute cannons.

I don't even have to watch this video. These guys, this company always favor the more expensive setup. Doesn't matter the brand, length, weight...none of that. More $ = More Better. I love catching bones on rods that were $370 seven years ago. They seem to work just fine. Not supposed to work, but somehow my rods do. I can't stand the elitist, pretentious, purists. Question: Why does one work in or own a fly shop? Answer: To gain access to the industry (it's cool to know the Sage guy) and to pay short money for high end equipment.
