It's amazing how sensitive some folks become about their gear when someone says that they enjoy shooting with something different. I accept that different cameras suite different styles and different conditions, and especially offer different shooting experiences. I've shot with a Sony a7rv since it came out, but I also have an X100VI (X100V before), and just ordered a Leica m11-P (also have an iPhone 13 pro), and I enjoy them all for different reasons. These days there really is no bad camera, there are just cameras for different situations. Personally, I have really enjoyed my Sony experience and have taken it all around the world but it never challenged me so I became bored, it's also not easy to travel with and the TSA loves digging through my bag. After my last two month trip to Asia and Europe I decided I wanted to travel lighter and be challenged, and enjoy the experiences of slowing down while shooting. So my x100VI and Leica with a few small lenses will now be my new travel partners. Great video, Dave, keep up the good work.

Definitely agree, any camera is great if you enjoy it and are motivated to use it. Mine are iPhone 14 Pro, Leica M9, Lumix LX100, Sony a7RII. Each have their purpose, the M9 inspires me the most, and is most like shooting a manual film camera to me.

I think the sort of camera you have can also draw you into a genre that suits that sort of camera. I send to be a predominantly landscape guy with a Mamiya 7. When I went digital I bought a general purpose Nikon DSLR but still used it mainly for landscapes, although I started doing some more general purpose photography. I got tired of the weight so quickly moved to m4/3 with a OMD-5 but used it for the same type of photos as the Nikon. The complexity of the menu system made me hanker for simplicity so I got a Q2 and all of a sudden I was mainly doing street.

I don't disagree! But I find this to be true even with the same camera. I constantly drift in and out of genres and challenge myself to try new things.

I also like the range finder experience but when you are at about 15K Dolars for an M11 plus a Leica Lens it is a very hard pill to swallow. I opted for the A7RV and have been very happy with it, After all the Leica M11 does use a Sony sensor and it didn't make sence to spend 4 times as much for the same output plus the Sony offers so much more for the buck.
@davidherring

It's definitely an expensive camera! And the A7RV is a great camera, too.

@@AIP404 Yes but then again I can get a 24 mp mirrorless camera for under 1k. I have a Leica M7 with a 35mm Summicron and really enjoy it. I just can't see why spend so much on a digital camera like the M11 for technology that only gets outdated every few months.

Agree with you on all points of this video. I have a Nikon mirrorless and nice Z-lenses that take clinically sharp pictures - it's my go-to if I HAVE to make the shot, but it isn't as fun as my m10r. I liken it to cars: a fully automatic electric car can move you fast, but some appreciate the fun of driving a manual transmission vintage sports car. For those who say "I don't know why you would spend the money when you can buy a camera with better specs for less" - it is because the process of making the art brings me joy.

Shoot with what's convenient for the moment, A7iii for quick portrait focus, Olympus pen-f for fun or Fuji XT-3. M10-R for even more fun with full frame capability. Nikon FM-2 or Yashica for film fun.

Couldn’t agree more with your views here! I’ve recently picked up a M camera and I love the process. My mirror less camera like you said is a computer and a does a job very well. I don’t have a point and shoot any more because my phone is more than good enough to fill that void now the M camera is in my trio.

I‘ve acquired a pretty big GFX setup over the past years. During my last holidays I wanted to carry less and opted for my X-T5 with just the 16-55 and the 33/1.4. That was quite comfortable but next time I’ll return to my GFX and take less lenses with me. The files of the GFX are such a joy to work with.

OK, I'll play: Hasselblad 500C, Mamiya RB67, Rolleiflex 3.5 Planar, Rollei35, Olympus OM4, Linhof Tech V, Cham0nix H1, and a Voightlander Bessa II 6x9 folder with a wonderful color Skopar lens. Oh yah: and iPhone 12 and a Fuji X-pro 2.. So, film and digital, but mostly film. I first started following you when the algorithm coughed up your vid on the RB67 in Yosemite. (At least I think that was you.) And being an SF guy, I am interested in what local folks are doing, so I will probably stay aboard. Cheers!

Dave, iPhone is great to grab quick images. Totally agree. Just sold Dlux 7 for that reason. Thinking about doing the same with the X100V. Use OM-1 for wildlife, M11, SL3, X2D for everything else: nature, macro, astro and most important, family and friends.

You hit the nail on the head! I traded in all my Sony equipment for Fujifilm. The Sony just wasn't inspiring me to do my own thing. Yes, it was great for work but that's it. With Fujifilm I only shoot in JPEG now but you can always shoot in JPEG and raw if you want to change the look of it later

I have the sony A7R III , the Leica M11 , sofort 2 and just picked up the Q3. Same with you I use the sony when I need to be efficient and precise. The M11 makes me want to take more photos because I am determined to get more comfortable with the range finder, the Sofort 2 is an awesome companion and a great way to print out photos and share it with friends and family. The Q3 , I am still getting to know but I think it will be a great companion to the M11 when I travel. I have my Iphone 15 pro max but I find I dont use it as much to take photos. I use it to edit the photos I take with my other cameras. I made a conscious decision to get used to grabbing my camera rather than my phone lol

I concur with your sentiments. I have the A7RIV; M11; Sofort 2; Q3; a Sony Xperia mobile but also a Fuji x100vi. The Leicas are good fun whereas the Sony is a machine. That said the x100vi, ticks a lot of boxes and is probably a more convenient travel camera. Dave - I'd welcome your observations about the Fujifilm cameras, ie XT5 which seem to bridge between Leica / Sony Alphas.

I’m like you, my Rangefinder gets the most use, for me it’s my Leica M10-R with Voigtlander 35mm f2. I seldom leave home without this in my hand. Second would be my SL2, if I need AF for anything specific. I try to use my iPhone as little as possible, but it is so handy and gets the quick pics so well. All my old film cameras, Hasselblad, Nikon are sitting on my shelf aka « museum of me » haha. Nice work Dave !

Liked. A good selection of “best” cameras, to serve many folks’ needs. An iPhone cannot, however, be on my personal list of “best” cameras. Less than two hours ago, I was trying to get my iPhone 13 Pro Max to focus on a weathered insect egg case, that was stuck onto a frost-killed Turk’s Cap branch. Finally, I gave up on capturing stills, and switched to video, so that I could more easily use the touch-screen to MAKE it recognize my intended subject, but, it still fought me. I do not remember my iPhone 7 Plus being nearly this stupid. I guess that the newer iPhones are so oriented toward looking for peoples’ and pets’ faces, that they cannot focus on anything else. Then, I changed to my Nikon D5, with a Micro-Nikkor AF 60mm f/2.8D, and BAM, instant AF lock-on. This subject was not unlike your driftwood images, seen in this presentation. There was detail, and structure, but the iPhone just did not see it.

I’d probably never do anything too serious with my iPhone, but it works great for me for candid everyday moments.

Sony Mirrorless is not basically the same thing as DSLR, and A7R V is way smaller than DSLR's like Canon or Nikon. There are a bunch of differences between a modern mirrorless camera and DSLR, not having a mirror in front of your sensor is a pretty big difference and that gave the possibility to make smaller cameras, having an electronic viewfinder seeing your image right away the way it will look is also a significant difference, size as well. :) Correct me if these things aren't a big enough.
@davidherring

I was referring to style of camera - a detached body with electronics and a lens. This is standard whether it’s an SLR / DSLR / Mirrorless.

Much of the same stuff you shoot here. My one love is a silver M10-r with a 50 f2 Voigtlander APO. When I shoot for a personal project it's an M6 that's the same age I am with a 35mm f1.4 II voigtlander. The "big rig" is an a74 with a 35 gmaster and a variety of Canon FD lenses. On trips I take the digital M, on city walks I take film, and to chase my kids it's usually the sony. If I had to get rid of everything, I would probably only keep the M6 and cry about the m10 for a while. Or the other way around :D I have zero emotional connection to the Sony, but it's an amazing camera.

I'd toss the Q3 into this mix. You get a nice mix of something like an A7RV and an M11 with it--Leica look, but serviceable AF. I have the iPhone 15 Pro and the images that come out of it are so flat and uninspiring. Apple really needs to fix their post-processing.

As much as I love my M11-P I still have a place in my work for an auto focus camera. Both the Leica SL2 & SL2-S had issues with the auto focus.
