I love my Level8 spinner. Got a great deal on an Amazon Prime event. Love the ability to lock up my belongings, safe storage of my laptop and the wheels are amazing. It rolls so effortlessly. I also love the once zip side. Great for putting dirty clothes on the return trip. Thanks so much for the lead on this in a past video!!

A packing list is a fantastic idea. I have one for several kinds of trips: overnight/weekend jaunts as well as a 4-week version. It saves the hassle of trying to remember every item or taking too many items. I hate wasting money on forgotten items as well as the time required to go out and find them at my destination. I stick to the essentials on that list--nothing else. Every time I throw in "something extra" that's the thing that doesn't get worn, but I've lugged it around for weeks. The list is organized by personal item and the carry-on suitcase. In addition, over the years I put the same items in the same places which eliminates panic-pawing to find something. I also include the price/value of the pieces in the suitcase on that list and keep copies on my phone a computer and a flash drive I leave at home. Once I was asked whether I had purchased and brought any jewelry back with me. After that, before leaving I also photograph everything--especially jewelry--so that if there is a question at customs on my return, the dated photo is proof that I did not purchase an item during my travels. If ever I need to make an insurance claim, I have the list. Using that system also leaves room in my bag--even a carry-on--for items I purchase while away. Sometimes I have shipped purchases to my home address rather than toting them around, but I do have to remember to declare them.

This is a super informative video. Laurie. I did get the Travel Pro softside as you recommended back when. I then bought one for my husband and also the Travel Pro carry underseat carry on tote for him as well. I have an underseat I've had for years. Going carry on is a challenge for this "be prepared for anything" gal. Have made it work for our last few trips when flying. I really like that new pink Samsonite carry on you featured. Look forward to how you like it as you travel more with it.

the feature I really like, and only half of the suitcases in my household have it, is a strap that buckles onto itself by the top handle of the suitcase. this buckles around the pull up handle of another suitcase, and you can pull as many as you need like a train behind you. as the designated porter in my household, this makes my job so much easier than trying to herd free range spinners around.

Hi Laurie! I’m a hard-sided gal & bought a set of Away luggage 4 years ago. I got the larger carryon & fortunately it has worked in all overhead bins even on smaller aircraft (so far!). They meet all of your space & sturdiness standards & come with a lifetime warranty, so for me, they’re great. Thanks for another helpful video!

I like Away. The biggest thing I love about them is that compression leaf on the one side. I pack in the compression cubes and put them on that side and then I can compress them even more with that leaf. I have an upcoming cruise in June where I will be gone for 20 days. I think I will have to pack a checked bag as well. I don’t want to have to spend my time doing laundry. I have those On Gossamer panties so can wash them so easily in the sink or shower.

The American Tourister 4 Kix wheeled carry-on tote is perfect as a personal item if you're flying Spirit or Frontier, where you are only allowed a personal item for free. It measures 18x14x8 (including handle and wheels) and fits in their luggage sizer. It costs less than having to check a bag last minute. It comes in pink and black. I got the pink and it worked perfectly for my recent trip to Florida on Spirit.

Managed Australia with a 19” Travel Pro and a Vera Bradley Weekender bag. I was amazed how creatively you can pack the Travel Pro even though it was a smaller size. Once I sat on it and zipped, it stayed together and looked new after all the connecting flights. The Vera Bradley Weekender I have had for years and carry over my shoulder usually even though I can slip it over the Travel Pro handle. It is squishy so I can get it under seats or in tight overhead spaces. The pocket in front held my tickets and passport prior to security. I swear by that bag and Vera Bradley has an outlet where you can get it fairly cheap sometimes.

Hello Aullie & Laurie ! Glad you mentioned Ricardo. I had a set that was purchased over 2 decades ago & most of my luggage has been donated to homeless shelters, foster care system or military. I kept the tapestry carry on , that traveled the world & it's now my "sentimental bag" for all things Paul. (He actually carried that set during deployments) The organization closets on the Airstream are being upgraded to "luggage hanging closets" that will fit my "underseat". Looking forward to your packing list ! Say hello to "mama and them" ~

Hi Laurie - I love all your videos and have watched for years. A critical feature affecting my choice of a carryon is the weight of the bag, So many bags claim to be light, but they weigh 7-10 pounds or more when empty! I own the Travelpro Maxlite International Rollaboard (weighs a little more than 5 pounds) and recommend it as both lightweight, sturdy, well organized and attractive. One minor flaw is the placement of the side handle, which is positioned horizontally rather than parallel to the side of the suitcase when it is standing. Still this is the best I have found to date and hope more choices in the 5-6 pound range will become available. Manufacturers need to consider that even wheeled bags have to be lifted - into overheads (if they are not too heavy to be allowed on board) into car trunks, onto trains and up staircases.

My number 1 consideration as well, with 7kg limit, any luggage more than 2.3kg (or about 5 lb) failed the light weight test. All these non-removable extra pockets, organiser adds weight.

I’m a year late on this video but honestly I think it’s almost timeless. You point out so many practical and useful things to consider in a carryon. You are not pushing the top 3 brands. Instead you are realistic about the how’s and why’s. Even picking up a great suitcase in JCPenney. A name brand might be good but it might just mean a higher price and useless features after the wheels fall off. I am a researcher and tend to really over research. I’ve watched too many videos on carryons the past few months. Your videos are the best I’ve seen and I recommend you as the first stop for any travel research. I’ve repeat watched a few, this one in particular. I can walk into a local store and immediately know what to look for. Thank you!

Totally agree about the double sided, open-like-a-book luggage. I borrowed one to visit my best friend who lives out of state. You are a wealth of information! Love the TravelPro Maxlite 5 rollaboard. EC packet it folder fits perfectly in the zipper pocket. It leaves more space in the main compartment for the compression bags. You are absolutely correct about maneuvering into a restroom stall. Spinners would definitely be easier 🤣 Love the crew model that has two pockets instead of one deep on the front..and is probably more durable all around. I thought the location of the handle indicated which side of the suitcase opened on..meaning facing toward you is correct. Your videos are so helpful and I love to pack! Time to book a flight somewhere…Vegas? Banff? Thanks and have a great weekend! Have you posted a video regarding traveling with your pet?

This is the best video I have seen concerning carryon luggage! Thank you so much! You explained every feature and what to look out for so thoroughly. I now realize my wonderful older soft sided Ricardo is just too heavy. I think I now want to get a hard shell without any extra outside pockets and zippers. I recently gave away my backpack after realizing all the pockets and sturdy zippers with large pulls was very heavy when light. I figure all the extra zippers and pulls added to the weight. I now have a backpack that opens at the top like an old fashioned doctor's bag that is more user friendly for packing and lighter.

Thank you for the video 👍 I travel often, and I never have a check in bag. I use my Tumi under seat carry-on and a matching Henri Bendel Jetsetter Backpack. I put a mini wallet in there and an extra plastic bag for snacks etc. I also have the popular Delsi Chatelet paris champagne luggage BUT... they aren't as convenient. There are some states that have the smallest planes and even the Delsi carry-on has to go in the belly of the plane bc the space is so limited. I also have the LV 55, nope too big also. The 45 too small and uncomfortable. Plus it just makes you a target depending on the city you travel too. I just bought a new carry on after another round of exhaustive research. It's the Andiamo Classico & it opens 70/30 with one hydraulic hinge, has RFID pockets inside & a laptop pocket inside. Hard shell, great quality wheels & Locking clasps vs zippers. I prefer clasps to zippers for all my luggage - I've had way too many cheap bags bust open at the zipper once I put my personal item bag on top.

Laurie, thanks for all the luggage tips. As I’ve said, we’re planning an international trip later this year after not having traveled by plane in 15 years! So I’ve been ordering several luggage pieces to check out. I ordered the Monos in a lovely pink but didn’t think it was worth the $130 more than my husband’s blue Level 8 so returned it. Their “try it and return it” policy wasn’t exactly that. I had to send pics showing I had never used the bag and then they charged me $40 to return it!!!! NOT HAPPY! I ordered a Level 8 in the pretty pink that I like but it doesn’t have the front pocket! Now looking at a CalPak... I’ll let you know what I finally end up with. Osprey Porter 46 backpack is my carry-on bag. I find a backpack is much easier to carry through busy airports than a wheeled bag. It also fits in the overhead bin much easier too. Osprey Day Lite works well for Personal item. I never do checked bags, even for international travel.

I can agree about the spinner wheels. I have both double and single wheeled spinners of good quality and I HATE the single spinners because they are not stable. I’m about to donate that bag and get a bag that has double wheels. As for hard clamshell vs soft flap, since I only use a hard checked for extended trips, I usually put it on the bed and unload it into drawers at my destination. I’ll carry a soft carry-on for either a week long trip or carrying items of immediate need or items that needs to be secured. Since it is short, unpacking isn’t necessary.

I use two Travelon under-seat cases (they're stackable) when traveling for a 10-18 day trip. They're lightweight and even when fully packed they're easy to stow in the overhead bins.

Great video and what to look for. I have an Eddie Bauer duffel is is a little fatter than a carry on but holds an amazing amount. It has serviced me for me for more than 20 yrs. I don’t do frequent trips one or two per yr to put my 😂experience in perspective. It’s good looking and very easy to spot on the luggage conveyer belt. Love it!

Sometimes if you flip the luggage rack around, so that the side that comes up is toward you, then place the spinner so that the wheels is away from you, sometimes it works. Awesome vid!!!

Hi Laurie, love your informative videos! My little 10 yr old VisionAir Spinner carryon had a rough trip to and from Grand Rapids and Des Moines this summer :( I rewatched this video before shopping for a replacement for an upcoming trip this fall. I'm a petite Senior with arthritis and a shoulder replacement so I was looking for a carryon that is rugged, lightweight and affordable. For years I had various Samsonite and American Tourister hard-side luggage that were great. But my old suitcases were just too heavy for me to handle as I started traveling with my elderly Mom and I was aging. Time to update my carryon! I loved the pink Samsonite carryon you featured but now most of my travel in to visit family. I checked TJ Maxx for three months and one day I found a Kenneth Cole Reaction carry for $30 less than a Samsonite. Thanks to your video I knew what to look for in a new carryon. The pretty teal Reaction carryon has all the features and durability of a Samsonite so I bought it, because TJ Maxx stuff "flies" out of the store quickly! When I came home I checked Amazon and they the same Kenneth Cole 20" Reaction in several colors, but the green color was on sale for $28 more than I paid for last years color at TJ Maxx. Thanks for all your travel tips!!!

It seems that luggage designers have an opportunity to design the wheelies to be retractable. If they could rotate inside an area and lock in either the extracted or retracted positions, this would allow the overall volume of the suitcase to be expanded a bit, and the wheels would less likely get damaged when checked in with the wheelies in the retracted position.

I have the Ricardo carry-on soft side. I don’t remember when I bought it. Probably 5 or 6 years ago. I’ve made quite a few trips overseas and across country. I’ve occasionally checked it as well. It has a good expansion that I use if I buy things on the trip. It still looks really good and no problems with the hardware or spinner wheels.

Hi Laurie - just wanted to report back and say thank you for your great tips re: carry-on luggage. Followed your advice when shopping and I'd like to add a lesser known (and very affordable) brand to the "thumbs up" list: the 22" spinner by Lily Bloom. Cute designs for ladies and sort of a "hybrid" - technically a soft side, but made of a recycled rubber type material. Sturdy and easy to clean, but with some pocket on the outside, which I life for organization. Paired this with an amazing Lovevook backpack as my personal item (your recommendation). Used packing cubes and split up my toiletries and I was able to pack for a 19-day trip with just these two pieces (did some laundry along the way, but still). :)

Oh, about the luggage rack: instead of using a luggage rack, per se, I use a foldable storage stool. You know, the ubiquitous ersatz 'leather' one that's like 2 cubes put together (but only one compartment) that makes a long stool with the lid on, but also can be used to store items. That is along the foot of the bed in the guest room and allows guests to use the top as a luggage rack. I put extra blankets and pillows inside so guests can set up the bed to their own comfort level.

Hi Laurie, I need more luggage like I need a hole in my head but yesterday tested my willpower. I was shopping in Marshall's. Of course I checked out the luggage. Low and behold they had a Ricardo hard side roll on. It was very, very nice and either $70.00 or $80.00. I wheeled that thing around the entire store while I shopped but finally came to my senses and put it back. I would not hesitate to recommend that piece of luggage. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, I think.

I'm a soft sided luggage person, but a couple of years ago on a trip I bought one of those small hard sided cases to fit my laptop and work papers - ... it's become my work case when I travel and it's small enough to fit all that I need for work... When I'm in the hotel, that will have to go on the bed to get out what I need and then zip up. Yes big disadvantages, but my purse that goes on the plane with this bag is big enough to fit under a seat and hold the laptop if necessary. thanks for all your tips, they are great.

We have Ricardo luggage that is about 30 years old. The fabric still has held up over the years. The problem is that luggage from years ago tend to be heavier. What I love about the Ricardo from years ago. It is a double split suitcase with a Suitor hook. The suitcase opens with half from the top and the other half below so it does not open like a book. It works much better on luggage stands and I find it easier to organize. The suitor hook is wonderful for nicer items. The original suitcases came with a personal item, a small carry on a standard carry-on, and a larger check bag. If I remember right, I think I might have gotten it from Kohl’s. Pretty soon I’ll be able to put it in the museum of luggage. Currently I have a TravelPro. International carry-on.

I find it helps to have different colored packing cubes. For example, green for tops and red for bottoms, yellow for undergarments, etc. So many packing cubes are sold in matching sets.
