When I lived in New York I had an English home. When I moved to Florida I found that English furniture didn’t match the flora that was outside of my window so I mixed 18th and 19th century French furniture in walnut and everything looks fabulous.

My theory is, you put what you like in there and you set it up the way that makes you feel the most comfortable. And then when someone comes into your home and glances around and asks " what tradition are you styling in." You can make some snarky comment if you want to. Something like "it's my tradition of trying to mesh early kitten with older exhausted human with overtones of getting rid of a lousy marriage and splashed and sprinkled with dash of joy .But no glitter of course I do not like glitter." Now...it's Little long for a bumper sticker but it might work on the side of a city bus

I absolutely love traditional design, especially the 'updated traditional'. I find modern styles a bit sterile for my taste especially Scandinavian. I like the coziness and the familiarity of traditional. Thanks for mentioning Chesterfield sofas. I need one in my living room like yesterday. Thanks for the awesome videos as always. Please do a video on tips for pet owners. If there is a way to make a functional cat tree/perch look good in the living room I'd love your take on it. Thanks.

I have Danish modern and you have to combine it with items like rugs, pillows and pictures that have extreme detail and colors like Chinese. They decorated with fluffy colorful wool rugs to offset the plain wood. This fixes the sterile problem. You have to think of the modern square wood design like the frame for your picture, but the picture is the important part.

I would reconsider that betterhelp sponsorship. They are notorious for collecting and selling your data including anything you tell your “therapist” to third parties for advertising. The traditional South Indian wooden ceilings are gorgeous and I really wish more people would incorporate it into modern designs, like how they have borrowed other traditional elements. Oxide flooring in some modern Indian homes are also a similar combination, especially since there are much colours available now than just red and black.
@kate2create738
@kate2create738 2 года назад
There are some North American homes that do incorporate some design features to the ceilings, but they tend to be used specifically fancier homes. The one exception that I can think of is the renovation projects in the last decade or so that have valued exposing wooden beams. Thankfully some architects are starting to credit the wooden beams in some of the designs to these homes, but not enough to curb so many plain ceilings that have been used for the basic cookie cutter houses. There’s also the tin ceilings trying to make a comeback, specifically for older homes depending on the space, the more fancier the more likely to be treated with extra details. Have to say, went to look up the type of ceilings you were referencing, and I could see that vibing with perhaps a boho style that is popular right now. The only thing is people would have to transition the light & gray wood tones that have been in the market for almost a decade to balance well with rich wood like the pictures I saw. I personally prefer richer wood tones than the stuff that has been in the stores, no loss on my part lol. At least we are not bombarded with popcorn ceilings, we still have too many ceilings that never got rid of that stuff to this day 😅

I was delighted to hear you talk about the things you love in traditional design. I LOVE traditional design, not like gilded Italian Baroque (exception, a nice mirror or marble fireplace surround), but rather warm rich REAL wooden consoles and tables, leather chairs, suede couches, linen drapes and organic decor items. I like styling with nicely framed art, bookcases full of hardback books, low leather gentleman's chairs. large wool rugs over hardwood flooring. I also love nice chenille throws, down feather pillows and deep seating. All of this combines to create a comfortable inviting home, and I honestly, just couldn't have it any other way. So thanks again for sharing what you love about traditional/transitional design. Keep up the great video's Nick!

Yes, I wish this video was longer! I like traditional spaces that aren't too busy. I have a long living room. Ha! I finally figured out what is missing: the symmetry. I could shift the position of one chair on one side of the room, and then I could face the chair on the other side of the room to face it while putting the side table on the left side instead of the right side. That could be interesting. Thanks for pointing it out!

I always thought Chesterfield sofas were super expensive and "elite" in a old english polo club kind of way. Yet a few years back I picked up a second-hand genuine Italian leather Australian Chesterfield in "Oxford Library Green" in perfect condition for under a thousand dollars AU. I then bought a 1950s era Australian Weatherboard house which was a postwar early mid century modern meets farmhouse - think japandi with warm wood tones mixed with a bit of rustic farmhouse so it fits perfectly as a "contrast" to all the simple lines. Everyone who visits loves it because of how comfortable it is and they really "ground" the space. Because they're often used in offices you can find them second hand, mine came from a accountant's office so it had only ever been used in a waiting room and was basically brand new. So don't let the assumption of cost put you off! It's a great way to get a very high quality leather sofa for a fraction of the cost of the more modern/affordable options :)

Yes, literally 2 days ago I finally figured out that this is my style. I removed a dresser and a gallery wall(after removing it I saw how "heavy" it felt and that now the room looks bigger). I also removed other small things. I realized that I want the traditional forms, that I love, but that I want my apartment to be airy, bright, minimalistic (even though not the hard core minimalism) and fresh. I also want some modern elements, so I guess it's gonna be the 80/20 rule. So, yeah, the way you described it, it's a thing. For me it is.

My favorite thing about my flat in a building built in 1936 is the gorgeous fluted molding around all the doors and windows. I put shades on the windows instead of curtains because I didn't want to obscure the moldings. I'll miss them when I move into my inherited childhood home soon. My mother in 1953 put sage green grass cloth on the areas of the kitchen not directly involved in cooking . It is still there and in perfect shape! I only need to clean it a little and it turns out to be surprisingly easy to clean. I'm doing a soft remodel of the 1953 kitchen but I'm keeping the mint green wall oven and the grass cloth.

I’m so happy you love chesterfields! (It’s the only tufting I approve of. Lol.) My house is “themed” by virtue of its architecture-logs. My LR has tremendous volume, but a modest footprint. I use 2 emerald/teal leather chesterfields for a few reasons. They are weighty and bold, so they keep the visuals focused on the bottom of the room, making it feel less cavernous. Their backs are low, so the sight-line passes over their backs, past the ebony baby grand piano, and out the large southern window to the meadow and woods. Despite being large, they don’t make the smallish footprint feel cramped. Lastly, they are SHOCKINGLY comfortable to sit and lay on, and can seat 8 people. Okay-post-lastly, they wear like iron and patina as they age.

@@Nick_Lewis I have a green second hand Chesterfield and in terms of cleaning having genuine leather you just give it a wipe over with a moist leather cleaning cloth to "detail" the diverts which grabs out all the dust, crumbs and hair. I wouldn't recommend a non leather one as that would be a total pain to clean. They're very popular in pubs which I gives them a rich/comfortable vibe.. but I'd steer away from brown and go for a Oxford Green or rich Red which tends to have more of a library or polo club vibe so feels a bit more refined then the brown sofa cliche.

I've always loved traditional. I could live in warm modern, but never have. In addition to the numerous items you mentioned, Nick, I also like floral prints--understated but wonderfully present prints whether on upholstery or drapery or walls as well as appropriate accent prints mixed with the others that say "Wow! That's unusual," rather than "My, that's so grannie." You need a light and elegant hand for that, however. I notice that many of the sofas you use as examples also have single cushion seating rather than 2 or 3 cushions. That helps give traditional sofas a more modern feeling as well as being wonderful for naps.

If you can find vintage leather sofas and chairs, there are utube videos on how to change the color and repair any scratches. I have cat scratches so I was really interested in this as they used my two piece sofa as part of their race track. I also have a giant modern leather picture with a scratch that needs repair. So keep your eye out for any damaged leather items that are cheap. The good quality stuff has zippers so you can restuff. Also the really good quality couches have springs and are not just stuffed so you feel like it is a bean bag chair. I love being able to change the color to match your decor because you cannot do that with an ordinary sofa.

I can appreciate modern design but I am a traditional girl who lives in the mountains on a farm. I love French country since I grew up with a French grandmother who got me to love Toile and all things French.

An issue I have with grass cloth, is how tricky it is to hide the seams between one panel and the next. It takes a real pro to hang it well.

I really don’t like grass cloth because you can always see the vertical stripes. The stripes annoy me to no end.

Hey, Nick, new to ur channel-- very much enjoying, thank you! Two traits I really like are 1) ur sense of humor, and 2) when u were talking about ur rescue dog, and reminded everyone to spay/neuter , I hit "subscribe". I'm weird, prefer traditional, English cottage-y. Love ur take on things, tho, and good advice. Keep up great vids!!

I too love a vintage Chesterfield but it's not in my budget. I do love the versatility of the lines, leather & comfort...it's classic & will never go out of style. Joss & Main have a more modern version: Jessica in black leather & wood legs. I think it fits in traditional, industrial & modern styles. Love your opinions on current trends. Please share more Japandi rooms. This is my new obsession!

Love the video. I think that some designs from the Traditional are just timeless pieces, like f. e. the Chesterfield sofa. I don't think that it will go out of style and it really can work in a modern design. I also love a fireplace 💜.

I think a little bit of traditional ideas can work really well if every space. Even if it’s just symmetry but then you make it modern, Scandinavian, farmhouse, etc

What about suede paint ? I have it on my walls in my coffee/plant room. We love it. Not practical if someone has kids but I think it gives a more upscale look versus just paint. I do love grass wallpaper. 👍🏻

Please do a video on remodeling a so-so fireplace. My 1949 fireplace included pink brick, a thin white mantle, and a wall-to-wall mirror that was glued to the wall above the mantel. Also, the previous owner installed a pinky-beige colored hearth. I’ve made some changes-removed the mirror, painted the brick a neutral color, installed a charcoal-colored hearth, and added a spotlight above the fireplace to highlight art. It’s much better, but still a bit lackluster. What can I do?

Great video and pretty examples. The French seem to mix all the elements you like. They have these cool modern kitchens and some scandi furniture but then all the traditional focal points and trim. I myself like both and I’m trying to mimic this with my new house but not sure how it’s going to pan out😳🤞🏼

Decor depends on the setting. I love much modern furniture as long as it is also comfortable and useful. However I live in a house built in 1560 andit would look pretty strange with modern furniture. I would love to see how you would furnish it

I love contemporary, but it can get cold easily. That's why I love to blend traditional elements into my space. It took a long to learn that that is, but it's called transitional. I've learned that I love contemporary spaces with traditional archeteture and timeless finishes to tie everything together.

Hi Nick, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your channel as a recovering traditionalist. My local real estate agent completely endorsed your thoughts on paint colors and the 'how to' move from the traditional (chinzy) style to to transitional. Thank you. Here's the issue where I need advice. When I see the neutral colors in sofas and comfortable chairs - I imagine drips of salsa, blobs of pizza sauce, fingers with Dorritos dust and even the jelly-stained fingers of tiny ones. Cream seems to be an unwise choice for furniture for an active family. How can I move towards modernism while accepting that families bring mess?

My problem with panel moldings is that they severely limit how Art is hung, WHERE it's hung and how big a piece CAN be hung ... and then, they discourage group hangings except in a row. (Not a fan of the constraints created by panel moldings, although they are, in and of themselves, attractive).

Apropos Buckingham Palace, Fontainebleau, or VERSAILLES... those rooms are ENORMOUS!! So the pictures hung on the walls (huge portraits) are actually HELPED by the panel moldings. But those dimensions are anything but the norm!
