I had a lot of old pipes and rebar to cut up and from what I read ru-vid.comUgkxPDBfLu68o58Aw85O_J-zIFfjJARBhp-3 this would be the tool for the job. Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. One good thing to know is the weight of the tool puts just about the right amount of pressure on the metal I was cutting, so I didn't have to use a lot of pressure, which is more likely to jam the tool. It made fast work of my job.

I got mine 2 years ago for Christmas and it's definitely worth the price. I've used it to grind, sharpen mower blades, cut steel pipe, wire wheel, and remove paint. It's comfortable and durable.

Glad you found Vessel screwdrivers. I bought one on a whim a year ago after encountering some JIS screws and use it almost every day. Their drivers work great with regular Phillips drives in my experience as well.

People talk smack about B&D a lot, but they still are a great, affordable tool brand. My first jigsaw was a B&D, is over 7 yrs old and I still use it for everything today, and I think I only paid around $35.00 bucks for it. Seven+ years of use for $35.00 is outstanding in my opinion.

I’ve got Vessel drivers as well. It’s interesting to note that they developed the JIS bit standard. The set I have is different. The tips are designed to properly fit both JIS and Phillips. They do work very well. I see that the B&D has the same wrench for the wheel lock as the HF model. I recently bought that HF model. Normally, I use both 7 and 11 amp DeWalt grinders. But last year, Jody from Welding Tips & Tricks showed an adapter for Roloc disks, which I bought. $15, and a great idea. So I can use them on an angle grinder in addition to my handpiece on my Fordoms. Problem is that they’re really too big, heavy and powerful for these 2” disks. The HF is perfect for that purpose. Small, light, and far more powerful for that use. The only complaint I have about the HF tool is the switch, you should talk about switches. The paddle switches are far better than any slide switch on an angle grinder. The paddles let one use at least two, and usually, three fingers to hold it closed. The grip is natural, as it’s the same you use to hold the tool. The little flip safety works very well so that you forget you’re using it after a short time. The push switch uses one finger, usually the thumb. It’s spring loaded for safety. But that spring is hard, and your thumb gets tired after a short while. Your hand also slips towards the rear of the tool, since you’re pushing the switch forwards. I don’t know how that BD switch feels. But the one from the HF is surprisingly tough to keep closed. I wouldn’t expect to see a paddle switch on a cheap tool, as they do cost more though. What does the BD weigh? One major reason I bought the HF for the Roloc was it weighs so little. But, this is the only grinder I took the guard off of. You don’t need it with Roloc disks, and the disk sticks out 4 inches anyway. That allows it to reach spots that you can only dream of with the 4.5” disks. You should try it.

I just bought a "Parkside" grinder from Lidl (German supermarket chain). 125mm (5 inch) rat tail style, 1200W, quick adjust guard and speed control for 22.99€ after tax (that would be 21,13$ before tax). I don´t know if Lidl sells powertools in their US stores. I might take it apart and have a look, for the power it´s definitely very cheap, about half the price of nameless grinders with similar specs- I does come with a three year warranty wich is nice. Feels good, PA6-GF30 for the housing, the flex has a thermal plastic jacket though. These videos are very inspirational. EDIT: The Black&Decker seems to be a good offering for 20$. For some small stuff around the house or multiples for specialty attachments it´s good to have around. For everyday and professional use something a little better would be more like it.

Last year at my local Walmart I found one of these grinders for $15 and a Bostitch 3/8 inch plug in drill for $20. I got them both, the grinder came with 3 discs which come in handy for sharpening lawn mower blades, the drill has enough torque to rip the heads off of 3/8 inch thick lag screws if you push it that hard by accident, whoops!

Great video. I think between this and the $10 Harbor Freight it depends on the use. If you're just using a wire wheel to knock off rust, then the $10 grinder is perfectly fine and should last a while, but if you're doing a lot of actual grinding, this would be better.

I had apart a 30 year old makita grinder. It had a rough life, all the bearings were bad, the pinion broke. In the head it also had a bronze bushing, and it was mint. Tight, no wear at all. In my opinion a good quality bronze bushing beats a cheap roller bearing, I can imagine the more moving parts wear out quicker. Fixed up and using it of course :)
@ToolTeardowns
@ToolTeardowns 5 лет назад
That's an interesting observation. I will say the more expensive grinders I've taken apart also had needle bearings instead of bushings.

This grinder looks pretty good for the money. I'm actually looking to add another grinder to the shop. The B&D is ~$30. Makita's entry level grinder is only $10 more. HFT's Hercules grinder can be had for ~35. I've had one for over a year and it performs very well. Surprisingly so. Hard to seriously consider the B&D, given the competition.

I have one but didn't used that much because I got a Makita for Just twice as much I payed for the BD. But I use the Makita as 220v in 110v so I got low rpm. Same thing with my new big Makita ga7020. Running on low voltage to get low rpm so I can use as a sander as well and not burn the wood. If I need high rpm I'll always have the BackeDecker on standby

I didn’t like the Black & Decker model only because it was not cordless. I returned it and wound up repurchasing it because it can’t be beat for the price and performance. I’m still shopping for a cordless model of grinder, but still is very sufficient given that it lacks portability. B&D has outclassed the major manufactures with this tool. Thanks for such an in-depth examination and analysis. 👌💪🏽✅

DFN UNIVERSE I bought a Mikita cordless. I needed to wire wheel the mortar up on the chimney and didn’t want to bother with the danger of heavy extension cords. Awesome power for a cordless but they are not cheap and are all battery hogs. It’s tough to beat corded tools and even good ones are dirt cheap by comparison. I would never buy a cheap cordless grinder as even the pro brands have short battery life and those companies do a lot of work to get reasonable torque from them. The likelihood of making one on the cheap is nil. Drills are about the only tool that has progressed to a near equal state with corded drills(if you pay enough). I bought a cheap HF drill just to leave out in a hangar. Battery charger wouldn’t work. More expensive one wouldn’t work either. Friends had some that charged and I used it. Worked minimally for $20 but was soon tossed. Bought a $$ Mikita drill and now leave the cheap Porter Cable out there. It has enough power and life but the e-brake loosens the chuck when it stops. Just saying there are good reasons to buy great tools. BTW, I use my cheap corded grinders instead of the cordless just to save the battery cycles so these are still relevant.
@Jim-ie6uf
@Jim-ie6uf 5 лет назад
Great comparo, the HF probably cost 60 cents, to make the the B/D probably 85 cents. I have a Porter Cable grinder, got it on Amazon for $60.00 or so. But just like the others, it slings grease off the gears and flings to the sides of the case. It did, however, come with a cutting and a grinding guard.

I just acquired one of these, so found this very interesting and informative. I have a question... what type of cutting wheel were you using? was it a Type 1 or Type 27? (couldn't tell from the video). The reason I ask is that the manual says to NEVER use a Type 1 disc, and I have a bunch of them and no Type 7 cut off wheels.
@dfnuniverse2198
@dfnuniverse2198 4 года назад
This grinder uses a type 27 disc. At 11,000 RPMs, the wrong disc could potentially become a very hazardous projectile. I’ve put a fabric cutter hexagonal blade on mine to add even greater risk. Ideally, the disc is sandwiched between the two flanges and has not moved yet. However, I have only used it once with that flat disc and I’m scared to use it again. 😅. Hope this helps...

i replace my old school power tool cords with the orange cord from hardware store off the bulk reel.i get some really good old made in usa electric power tools and usually because the cords are brittle and cracked exposing bare copper wires. the electric drills i retrofit the jacobs chuck with a key to a cordless keyless 3/8 chuck from a dinosaur cordless drill or a dinosaur cordless drill from a garage sale for a dollar.i can get old aluminum housing power tools for 1-5 dollars this way. with a little sweat equity i get a power tool that will outlast me. on drills i usually remove all the old grease and repack with synthetic grease.i lubricate the armature bushings and scotchbrite the commutator . i can dedicate drills with wire wheels and flapdiscs and just grab and go. most have the locking trigger. i also spray the switches.these old drills will get so warm you need to wear a glove but they always work and dependable after going through them.

Normally, I'm a big champion for the value HF tools offer, but that guard is a dealbreaker. Paying the $10 extra for a guard that can be easily adjusted is worth it to save you time and more importantly, stop you from wanting to remove it completely. Just google for angle grinder accidents to see what happens when a cut off wheel spinning at tens of thousands of RPMs decides to come apart. That $10 guard could save you thousands in hospital bills.

Bought one these a year or so ago haven't used all that much because I have other grinders I use more but got this one because I didn't have a 4.5 inch one but it just failed on me at the head where the gears meet tried to fix it but can't find any parts so I will just throw it away and get another cheap one the thing may have about 2 or 3 hours of use

welder here and this is a great grinder. better than harbor fraud and wal-farts house grinders. Although their grinding disks suuuuuck. Throw them out and buy literally any other brand. Ace is good for a cheaper option. The best i found was dewalt.

Just to say the Black & Decker Brand is owned by Stanley. Which they also own Dewalt. Black & Decker is & has aways been their cheaper deal. But the Black & Decker grinders aren't all that bad.

Nope, Black & Decker used to have a professional line of tools - not cheap at all.

Well if it doesn't have a trigger or paddle switch it's not safe. Those slide switches stick.

Alway I try to maintain my finger in the switch for that reason I hate switches but this is a good grinder for light welding works

How come no one post videos of the hypertough grinder tear down. Black and Decker makes hypertough. The brushes from this grinder fit it. The hypertough switch is rated at 8 amps even though the motor is rated for 8. There's halfa dozen grinders with the same basic shape and anywhere from 5.5-8 amps. I would like to see a amp draw on these cheap grinders. Since the switch is half decent. Brushes are cheap like 5 sets for $12

Motor for 6amps* not 8 I think it's draws a little more then 6. My 8 amp Ridgid doesn't have really much more power then it. Only a tiny bit.

2nd edit. The hypertough takes the brushes from the 6.5 amp grinder sold right next to the hyper tough. For a cheap couple grinders to have Walmart has them on sale for $16 right now. I keep one every vehicle there great to use and if someone wants to borrow it it's not a big deal they break or trash it. Or someone needs one at work if a tool goes down. I've put them through hell. All day grinding with flap disc. They can go replace it for $20. My favorites are my dwe402, and my 7in ridgid 15 amp.. what I always do is open up the gear case. Before I start it. And remove the cheap grease. And use the Chevron red lithium grease. And once ive ran it a month or so I do it again except I open the sealed bearinga and get the red grease inside them. Never had a bearing failure. The cheap grinders don't come with much grease and crappy grease they want you to buy more tools. That redgrease handles 10000 psi of the pump trucks at work. This is child's play for it. Never lost a bearing in any tools I've done this to from new. Drills, dremel, sanders.
