Ahhh, bread pudding always reminds me of my dad. He didn’t cook a lot, but he did make a mean “old Virginia ham”, jam cake, and bread pudding.

We make a casserole that is similar. We call it French Toast casserole served with syrup or without depending on your preference. After the presents are opened I take it out of the oven and cook up a batch of scrambled eggs. Everyone comes to the table for breakfast, no rushing thru the meal allowed. They can not get up until everyone is done and the table cleared. I did this with my children and now with my grandchildren.

THANK YOU for sharing this. We shall try it! For the last few years, we've had homemade eggs benedict casserole, using my sourdough English muffins and homemade Hollandaise Sauce. I put it in the refrigerator until CHRISTmas morning and pop it in the oven while the kiddos are busy being children on Christmas morning!

To me, Australian, that is a dessert or pudding. I quite often make bread and butter pudding. It's basically the same - butter some bread slices, arrange in a casserole dish, pour over the mixed eggs, cream & milk. Add some sultanas, raisins if you want and cook.

It is so interesting to see how the meal are the same all over the world..here in Czech Republic ( in history the Bohemian part of Austria Habsburk monarchy and this was traditional cheap meal all over this area..I used to love it as a kid so I still make it for my children too- we call it "žemlovka" ..and slised apples and quark go into it as well..😋🥰thank you Lisa🙏

I have some gf bread my son bought for turkey sandwiches, may just use that. I like my raisins to soak up the liquid and be all plum, going to put those on the bottom, pour the custard over them and then serve it flipped! ;) Also could use kefir to see if that makes it a bit more of a 'sour dough' flavor. My favorite think to make & eat. I don't make a vanilla glaze, I add vanilla before I bake it. I love it warm with milk poured over it. I will reheat it in the microwave the next day & pour milk over it. I could eat the whole pan myself....lol

In Australia we think of this as a dessert. Practically cooked the same. Only difference is we butter the bread and sprinkle with a little sugar on top. Sometimes we butter the bread and spread jam before cooking. I never put raisins in and my favorite part is the crunchy top of the pudding.

… just a thought, we really like mincemeat, so, we would add a few dollops of mincemeat in our Apple Crumble. It has all the holiday spices and would also go well in the Bread Pudding. Oh, and of course served with warm custard :)

Crazy that this popped up on my suggestions. I learned today that some families might have handed-down sourdough from a hundred years early-started with their great- great- great- great grandmother. Personally, it doesn't sound scary or gross, since sour dough is made of fermenting things. And as long as everything is sterilized before making contact and is kept in use, then the stored, heirloom staple should never ever go off.

Lisa, should make your own vanilla, so easy, and even at todays prices for vanilla beans. You don’t need the best, grade A, to make it. I buy 25 vanilla and, if I am remembering right, it gives 2 quarts. I let mine sit at least 6 months before using. Love it 😊

Put it in the oven when both are cold and turn the oven on. The make ahead will heat as the oven does and avoid breakage that way

I have a question about one of your other breakfasts. For sourdough cinnamon rolls if I wanted to follow the recipe as you have it and then after rolling them but before putting the heavy cream on them keep them in the fridge overnight. That way in the morning I can take them out and let them rise for an hour or two and then do the heavy cream and bake them. Do you think that that would work? I want to make them for Christmas morning.

That looks so good! I love bread pudding, though I do it a little differently from yours. I work with bread sliced & cut into triangles, buttered too. Then stand it in the dish so that the tip of the triangle gets crispy in the oven. (Lots of people I know also use marmalade or jam on the bread too, though that’s a step too far for me.) I use a mix of sultanas, raisins f currants & sprinkle a little nutmeg on it. Then it’s just whisk up the eggs & milk (or cream) because the butter’s already in there, & bake until I salivate! Maybe mine’s the UK way, I can’t honestly remember who taught me, we had so many cooks in the family! I’m sure your children will be bouncing off the walls with excitement, with all this gorgeous food to look forward to!
