I always make my own. I use the coconut water in with the three cups hot water which i blend together in batches and then pass through a kitchen towel to obtain the milk, which I then turn into a lovely custard called “tembleque”, which I then pour into individual ramekins and refrigerate until set. The final product is a trembly custard, delicious and fun to eat. The remaining coconut flakes can be dried in the oven with some sugar and whatever strikes your fancy, even granola. The toasted product can be stored in a glass jar, and used sprinkled on ice cream , cakes, rice pudding, granola, cookies, fruit salads. The sky’s the limit.

Why no discussion of guar gum? All of those brands have guar gum as a thickener. There are brands that are just full fat coconut milk, and the flavor and usability is outstanding. It is Native Forest and is USDA Organic, using only fresh coconut and filtered water in the ingredients.

It does seem a little silly to only include the top result and the bottom 3, and leave out the 3 other recommended brands without mentioning the fact. And of course the coconut milk branded to appeal to upper-middle class white people were the worst 3, lol. Chaokoh is one of my favorites too. That and another similar brand with a blue and green label I can only find at larger Asian markets.

You can even see that the Aroy-D has a smoother, creamier, more consistent texture than all the others. Just by visual comparison alone it would have been my pick. And as one who has used A Taste of Thai before and found it wholly unappealing, I agree with the testers… it deserves a place at the very bottom.

Interestingly, in Thai curries, you want to sauté your paste in a bit of coconut milk until it breaks and separates. So often you don’t want a coconut milk that stays completely homogenous like the samples they had to the left. My mother’s recommendations are typically Chef’s Choice, Aroy-D, and Chaokoh.

Respectfully I disagree with your theory that coconut milk that separates is bad. That usually means it’s natural. Some good coconut milk has no chemicals added to bind it together will separate, reheat it to mix it back together. Often cheap coconut milk is thick because of chemical binders and additives. But at least you picked a good one as number one. Aroy-D organic separates but great for desserts.

THAI kitchen hands down, there is no coconut whey water at all and slightly sweet and creamy but maybe I try that other.

365 is my favorite and great for making whipped coconut cream and other pb sweets (though never savory for me ewwwww). Then native forest is good and that is my second choice. The cheaper ones I don’t like, TJ I tried but I didn’t like it, it’s never smooth and that Thai one I don’t like at all.

Full serious takeaway: if your coconut milk isn't made in SE Asia, is expensive, and/or doesn't have foreign writing on it, don't buy it. Notice how the WORST ones were the most expensive and clearly English marketed. Coconut is incredibly cheap in areas where it's widely used, so any time it's marked up, you're being sold a bs product.

My favorite is The Chaokoh brand. You should have included it in the comparison video. It’s consistently full bodied.

@@emdcrazycat Uhm it most definitely is Chaokoh. There's even a picture of the can in the report.

@@emdcrazycat While not in the video, Aroy-D, Roland, Goya, and Chaokoh were the top 4 brands and all "Recommended". The other ones in the video (except for Aroy-D) were in the middle or bottom.

I hope the obsession with kale ends soon. Neither my husband and I can't stand it. And WTF are "kale chips"? I ate one and it was like eating fallen leaves from trees.

There is no substitute for the freshly made coconut milk. Forget about canned.
