Scotty Kilmer so the “inorganic” and “organic” refers to the additives only. After some more reading it looks like the main inorganic additives were “phosphates and silicates” which I’m assuming to be sodium silicate and sodium phosphate (or maybe it was phosphoric and “silicic” acids hence the name “IAT”). The organic additives appear to be sebecates (salts of sebacic acid), 2-ethylhexanoic acid or some other proprietary organic acid. The hybrid one appears to use organic acids but not 2EHA (so I guess this is proprietary?). So, you know that “liquid glass” radiator repair stuff they sell for repairing radiator leaks? It looks like that’s just a concentrated form of the additives the put in “IAT” coolants!

So I have a car with dexcool (2017 Chevrolet spark)... I know dumb decision. Anyway since this dexcool stuff is bad could I flush it out entirely and put in some of this new stuff made by Toyota or would it mess with the warranty?
@73honda350

2-EHA in newer cars (post 2001 or so) has been shown to cause leaks in their silicone-based gaskets.

I just went and purchased genuine Toyota coolant “the pink stuff” because I just realised that the local mechanic didn’t do it when I had my car serviced. All my local stores had green coolant. This video reinforces that I made a good choice. I’m dumb when it comes to cars, but you’ve taught me so much!

Scotty is spot on with the coolant. As a ford mechanic, I had a Taurus that kept coming back with a leaking heater core. I replace it 3 times in a year. Came to find out that the electricity it created would corrode the heater cores and eventually cause them to leak. (had to add a ground wire to the recovery tank).

Dude this guys RU-vid channel subscription number is an indefinite reflection of his easily likeable atmosphere. Not only is he overwhelmingly informal, his delivery is straight forward and somehow manages to define the various functions of a multitude of different car appliances , he manages to do it in a very organized fashion and all of a sudden you have a complete understanding of the different types of coolant there are and how it’s evolved over the years to increase performance

I personally use Zerex G-05 in my car. I also really like to change it far more often than recommended even though it may be a waste. I do a full flush when I first buy a car and then another every 1-2 years depending on how hard its been driven. I just like to make sure the system is clean because I'd rather replace coolant every year or two than hoses, thermostats or water pumps every 5 or so years.

THANK YOU! I'm a proud DIY owner of a Toyota with 155k miles (do my own work thanks to you), and thought it was about time to do fluid. I thought I read in the manual that it didn't need to be changed, but assumed they didn't expect someone like me. This is the best review I've seen by far and I've been searching auto repair forums and am now amazed at how many 'techs' had no mention of this, even when I asked the difference (between the pink and the green stuff). My only question now is if I can find a good alternative to genuine Toyota fluid which is twice as much out here. You gotta be crazy to let these shops touch your car. I started doing my own stuff (again, I did as a kid) because I was tired of the upselling: 'When was the last time you changed out the air in your tires? We recommend that with every oil change'....GONE.

The 'as a woman' comment is outdated and cliche. Those shops are equal opportunity. They will upsell, lie, cheat and swindle anything that walks in. Including my Dr. Brother-in-Law, my sister or my engineer self. AND STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING "FREE" - NO FREE BRAKE INSPECTION, NO FREE ALIGNMENT INSPECTION, NO FREE FLAT REPAIR, AND NO FREE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT - those are merely authorization requests for a $1000 "necessary minimum service." If there was ever an industry that need to be decimated it was those guys.

Tee Jay I think both you and girohead make good points. I have experienced his ''equal opportunity'' shops, and I suspect you have experienced crooked men who don't know about the law of return, so consider it an advantage to seek refuge in the bias and illusion of chauvinism.

Thank you for the video Scotty, as always appreciated. My 2013 Volvo calls for HOAT however I contacted Peak and Prestone to check with them in order to swap the expensive Volvo coolant to either Peak and/or Prestone (OAT) and they said that there is no problem and it can even be mixed together but preferably one type is best as they have different lubrification package.

The pink coolant is also known under the “Pentosin” brand name in Germany. This is the ONLY brand recommended/required coolant for Audi engines. Great video as usual Scotty.
@900Yugo
@900Yugo Год назад
Except that coolant is called Pentosin E. The original designation for that coolant is called GG40 by Glysantin a brand of BASF. VW calls it G13. Another brand that is also recommend for VW brands is Vaico G13.

Thank you Scotty for clarifying the difference between IAT, OAT and HOAT, and which is the best. Succinct and clear. Any suggestions on how to purge dexcool sludge from the coolant system? I've been so frustrated I had decided to attempt to flush and clean my car's coolant system with the hope of going to the green coolant (IAT). But now, you've convinced me that is not the best "solution"!

In my old Porsche that had a liquid cooled engine, I would use a mixture of Redline's Water Wetter plus distilled water and flush it once per year. This, plus the use of Redline's full synthetic ester-based motor oil, improved the heat transfer in my engine so much that the engine temp would never go above the thermostat temp regardless of the engine load or outside temperature. An added benefit was that it helped cool my oil and keep the oil pressure higher when the engine was at idle. The drawback with this stuff was that the anticorrosive additives would wear out faster in an all-aluminum engine, which I had, and had to be changed more frequently. Also, there was no boiling point elevation or freezing point depression so I couldn't use it in a climate where the temperatures would dip below freezing. This was not a problem since I lived in San Diego at the time. The car had an extremely high-pressure cooling system pressure and so the water's boiling point was sufficiently elevated that it would never boil.

What does the water wetter do?

@@johnstack5008 essentially reduces the surface tension of water allowing better thermal transfer.

Back when I used to have problems with my Ford van overheating I found a product called "Wetter Water". It was a coolant additive that claimed to make the water a better conductor of heat thereby keeping the engine cooler. It actually worked. I've always wondered what was in that stuff.
