I can relate to you guy's. You're unique and fun. Like your lil end piece jade... haven't forgotten bout you- all - bare wi' me. Meanwhile, correct me if I'm wrong. You'll said to be prepared to spend roughly two times what you spend in boat. If one's boat cost approx $6k...you'll spend roughly the same amount on add ons and up- grades. So you spent just over 2k pounds on safety gear , Life jacket's, dingy, pbr...vhf radio, etc and you spent approx 4011 lbs on extra navigation equipment like ais, chart plotter, radar etc... Comes to roughly double the price as you mentioned, or are there other stuff

I really wouldn't be able to justify spending this much on electronics for a budget boat. My solution is Raspberry Pi with OpenPlotter OS and all the necessary peripherials. It can also be connected to whatever existing information bus bar and to mobile devices via wifi or bluetooth. It works as a ship's mainframe computer and is both much less expensive than marine electronics as well as future proof. The only downside is that, like any DIY project, it takes more time to set up.

Got to agree with everything you said. You have done your homework ! Raymarine just so clunky, Garmin works ok until it does not work and then they dont want to know. B&G get great reviews with. real people that sale and good after sales which is what sailors want. You know that in the 1990's Southsea had a falkener come round and fly a hawk to get the starlings away and stop them roosting on the boats? So many times we have had to clean blackberry induced guano from our boats at Port Solent and Southsea. Get Rupert to bring back the faulkner. :-) Looking forward to your install videos guys. Hey thankyou so much! I did so much research before this haha. I'm sure the guys at B&G and Force 4 were fed up with me calling them. I literally can not fault the service from B&G, I think I had about 5 longish phone calls with them discussing the in's and out's of the system I was hoping to have. They have actually had the falconer back last year, I was talking to Rupert about it and he did say they were trying to get on top of it. Thank you so much for commenting, we love hearing of you guys. I didn't know you had a son here, hopefully we will bump in to him when we are next down, would be nice to meet him and have a chat! I've got a pretty similar B&G system myself. Only differences are no radar, a Vulcan 7 & a Lowrance Point 1 heading sensor. Oh, and more importantly, a Fusion BB100 NMEA stereo! The fine detail on some of the compatibility stuff is something that drives me crazy on these. For example, pretty much all the documentation says you need that precision 9 sensor to interface with radar - judging by your experience, probably not. I'm yet to see someone with a Simrad TP22 or TP32 actually connected up to see if they can control that through the Vulcan or not - would love it if you could show that! Just one point though - Sailsteer does NOT work without the heading sensor. I didn't realise I needed one until after I'd installed everything else. Apparently it's because although there's the GPS in the Vulcan, it will only give Course over Ground, not Heading (which kinda makes sense). Until there's heading information on the network, none of the smarts show up. The moment I plugged it in, all good. Thanks for a great video guys!
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 года назад
Hey thank you for watching and commenting! The compatibility is also something I struggled with at first, I finally think I'm starting to understand it now haha. I do have a TP22 and have it linked to our system. I definitely don't have the full auto pilot functionality of the triton or vulcan but it does follow way points so far (i need to do more testing). The main reason we got the ZG100 was because we knew it would help with sailsteer and the overlaying of radar on the chart. So far we are loving the system 😁. Again thanks for commenting.

Good day. Like the video, i have on questions about the simrad tiller pilot and the b&g chartploter or the triton 2 . Does the tp interphase with the b&g stuff. Would like to know if all that you installed are working properly. For myself want to put the same configuration on my 43ft boat. Regards Kobus
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 2 года назад
Hey Kobus, glad you enjoyed the video. So in short yes the Tp autopilots do interface with the B&G network. I think you would need a B&G chartplotter to be able to use all the functionality. And also I dont believe the Tp10 has the same functionality as the tp22 and tp32. With the latest firmware you should be able to control the tp from the chartplotter and be able to sail following waypoints (you will need to click next way point as a safety feature is that it won't steer the boat 90° without your input) and also sail to wind. I must add though that none of this is strictly said by B&G and if any functionality was lost its not something that is guaranteed (although I dont see this happening my self hopefully). If you have any more questions please feel free to ask 😊 All the best Brynn and Jade

I just hope you can get the opportunity to use it all and sail where you want. Then it’s worth every penny. Would Predict Wind be the next electronic addition?
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 года назад
We do use predict wind on our phones already so we should be able to download them to the Vulcan chart plotter also. We don't pay for the full predict wind package, but we most likely will do just for larger passages such as the bay of Biscay. Brilliant bit of software though and easy to use. We also hope to use it all and sail far, there will always be set backs but we are determined for adventure.

We have a mix of kit - B&G, Garmin, Raymarine, Em-trak - but the key was the NMEA2000 network. Once that is set up correctly the rest is straightforward. The Vulcan 9 is a great piece of kit. No AIS?
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 3 года назад
We did already have AIS on the boat so using a NEMA 0183 to 2000 gateway it should hopefully work nicely on the Vulcan. It was something that i really wanted was equipment that all worked nicely together to enhance the sailing experience and safety. A lot of sailors have told us that having a wind instrument is not an essential bit of kit. For us though having lived in Birmingham all our lives, we have no wind awareness at all and its something we need to learn haha. having this equipment should hopefully help us learn quicker and be a little safer.

The Radar is mostly for safety, it will be worth it for the times when we will be glad we have it. We hope to do some night sailing also and feel it will be useful then for coming in to ports or sailing where there might be fishing pots. seems odd to spend 4k on instruments when you only spent 7 k on the whole boat. especially as self proclaimed tight budget sailors. is this cost really required as opposed to nice to have? that said, like your vids and will be following along with your adventures. thanks for sharing and your time and efforts x
@ChasingCurrents
@ChasingCurrents 2 года назад
It was our intention to buy a cheap boat then add some upgrades. For us it made more sense if we had 11k for example to spend, that we would get a cheaper boat then get new electronics rather than spend 11k on a slightly bigger boat maybe but with still dated electronics. For us now we have used the package for over 1600 miles crossing biscay and sailing down Portugal, we wouldn't want to be without radar and ais. If we was staying in the UK in familiar sailing grounds we dont think the upgrade would have been worth while. But sailing to new destinations every other day the electronics was a massive help. That’s not true about Raymarine , it will talk to other brands , I have a mix that talks to each other

Thankyou for correcting, I think what I ment was it has its own Raymarine Seatalk network.

Yeah it calls it seatalk for some reason, but it's just NMEA2000 with a different connector, but the who wants to buy adapters all the time. I must admit I was sold on the sailsteer system, though the faff that installing the triducer through hull looks like it will be is giving me anxiety 😮

Wireless definitely not as good as wired. I know this well as I’m an electronics engineer and I work a lot with wireless technology as I own W wireless ISP. Simrad and B&G will communicate as they are identical products jus different logo.

Ah fair do's! So far we've found ours pretty useful, especially when night sailing/in fog and in busy shipping lanes

You’re right about it all! Bng is awesome. Love the interface. Also i have spent equal amount of usd on my electronics and the purchase of my boat but totally worth it. I lucked out. Was gonna get the vulcan 7 but defender.com had a special on the vulcan 12, $999, with all maps and bng had a $200 usd rebate i paid the same amount on the 12 that i was gonna spend on the 7. Love bng.

We totally agree, we have enjoyed using it so far and really like the interface. and wow that's such a good deal! we originally looked at the 7" but it wasn't much difference in price for the 9 after the offer with B&G at the time. We definitely think the bigger the screen the better. Thanks for commenting 😁

Great video and explanation guys. You're certainly going to glow at night with all that equipment 😂. Looking forward to the install 👍. Btw, we've had one lot of bird pooh since leaving the UK. Not so sure thars a good sign though 🤔 but does make life easier ⛵
