Keep on keeping on! Dado stacks are nice, but unnecessary. Also, if you want to use dowels , I highly recommend the dowelmax system. Precision milled aluminum jig with hardened drill guides. The drill bits are fantastic with 2 flat channels to lock the stop collars onto. It’s not cheap, but it is a very good system. They have a RU-vid channel for videos on using it and getting the most from dowelmax jigs.

When staining soft wood, a pre-stain conditioner will prevent blotches.

Ive heard of that but ive yet to try them. Do you have a favorite brand?

@@spendalmond I have used minwax’s I think; I don’t normally stain soft woods so it’s been a while

Good stuff man :) Very much in a similar boat to yourself, every project's a new lesson to learn, love seeing reclaimed/waste wood being used and it's my favourite wood to work with, little to no money spent on it so there's no pressure when it comes to making mistakes or experimenting Personally I love pallet wood, but I'm picky about how I use it because of the board dimensions when you break them down, I like soft pallet wood for practicing whittling/carving too, the last few pallet wood projects I did I glued a few together cut them down to shorter blocks and hand carved them into whales, after finishing with a wax stain you'd never consider they were made from pallet wood

That sounds really cool! I typically only make furniture out of my boards and that usually take a fair amount of wood, hence the aversion to pallets. But you make a great point, carvings would be great out of pallets. Love to hear it! Have you ever tried looking buying some firewood bundles to make carvings out of?

@@spendalmond It's funny you mention firewood bundles actually, me and my cousin share an allotment and we've a log burner in the greenhouse/shed We were in a shop a couple of weeks ago and as it's getting toward winter he was looking at the prices of the firewood bundles in different shops, and that exact thought crossed my mind We've plenty of actual scrap wood for fuel at the minute but I'm probably going to pick up a bag of firewood anyway purely out of curiosity haha

Fantastic work - I do lots of projects simply because I want to learn something! - One recommendation: I generally avoid wiping down glue joints with a wet towel, it thins out the glue and lets it permeate the surface which can effect your end finish if you're going to stain etc. It's not the end of the world, just harder to deal with. It's easier to let it partially set up and then scrape it off.
