I ran into this same question 2 weeks ago. I had to edit some 4k footage for a very last-minute work project, and our current computers just couldn’t do it well. When it was done I decided to pull the trigger on an M2 Pro Mac Mini, and as I got to the online store, saw that the M2 Mac Studios had been released. The upgraded Mac Mini I was looking at was only $100 AUD less than the base model M2 Max Mac Studio. With the additional GPU cores (and asking Chat GPT how each spec I was looking at could handle 4k video in Resolve Studio 18), and the option to upgrade to 64 GB of Unified Memory (yes, please), I went with the 512 GB M2 M2 Max Mac Studio. It came a few days ago, and replaces my 2014 MacBook Pro for all things Apple, and will be my go-to pre/post-production machine for any client events.

I bought an M2 Pro Mac mini. It’s a $700 difference here in the US compared to the base Mac Studio. With that difference, I can purchase additional storage and ports and still come out less than the Mac Studio. And 16GB has worked for me for 3 years, so I know I don’t need more than that.

Replaced my old late 2013 27” iMac with the base model M1 Mac Studio. Only upgrade I got for it was 2TB internal storage. Also bought a Studio Display for it with the tilt, raise, lower stand and anti-glare. Received the Mac Studio first and had to use our HDTV for a display until the Studio Display arrived 2 months later. I really like it! Suits my use case perfectly!

That’s the upgrade path I’m looking to do. With wanting a 2TB hard drive the m2 mini stops making sense as it starts getting close to the studio price.. although I might wait a bit longer to see if they do a new 27 inch iMac

I have a base Mini M2 Pro(upgraded to 32GB RAM). I use it for development (web development, JVM-based creative coding, occasionally C++-based stuff too), UI/UX design, photography and general productivity. It's pretty much perfect for me. I've heard many say it's such a poor value over the base Studio, but if I truly don't need any of the upgrades than I think that is poor value. This idea of ”good value” in a general abstract sense is so silly. Value depends on your needs! The Mini I have fulfils my needs pretty much exactly and I'm extremely happy with it. I also strongly prefer the form factor, it's just less unwieldy (which matters when switching the monitor cable with my work laptop). It's also funny people being worried about base SSD performance, aside from the OS and light weight documents (because iCloud needs to be on default drive)… I just run everything off an regular Samsung T7 which AFAIK is much slower than even that SSD and it's still plenty fast for my needs. I don't need the most fancy thing, I just need the thing that does the job well, and this does. (I copy pasted this from a previous comment I wrote for another video as it fit in very well here too.)

I was umming and aaahring about the M2 Mini Pro but wasn't 100% sure about whether 16gb memory was futureproof or not, especially with VSTs. Then Argos were selling off their M1 Mac Studios for £200 more than the base M2 Pro so went for one of those instead. It's a beast of a machine and should last me a very long time!

Good comparison. I got the M2 Pro 10 core (12 core not worth it) Mac mini 16GB but with 1TB because the 526GB is a slower ssd. Even with bigger external ssd it still slows down writing to that external drive as various RU-vidrs have proved in tests.

As a business and personal owner and user of the Studio Ultra, M2 Pro Mini and the M2 Pro MBP I can say the one I use by default is the Studio. My views are only anecdotal but software wise I find the Studio throws up less glitches than the others. Spec wise they should all handle my workloads but especially the MBP has tantrums. I have two very defined work stations for video and photography and find I’m just using the Studio whenever possible. It maybe the overhead but I definitely have fewer annoyances.

We use middle class iMac for reception in my company. Mac studio Ultra is used for video and sound post production, m2 pro for photos and graphics. Everything is hooked up to network with a server. We still use the external SSDs to keep memory free. The computers only contain the adobe softwares, SSDs are current work, server is finished work. We keep it in server for 2 or 3 years (depending on job) and have 10 Pedabites in cloud storage where it is kept for ever. :) i think we may make a video on all that comming up once we start focusing on our YT channel.

@@MarkEllisReviews Please do! I'm thinking of using my late 2015 iMac Retina 5k as a monitor for a new machine, whatever it may be: either the M2 Pro or the M2 Mac Studio. Even being aware of some glitches I may face on a Mac-to-Mac pairing, a brand new 4k monitor is so expensive down here in Brazil... That's why I'm tempted to give my 5k iMac screen that extra life. But I'm afraid it will be dumb of me to invest on a Mac Studio and not have a proper monitor to get the best performance out of it. Geez, I hate being an Apple slave!

I was looking at getting an M2 Studio Max, but a near new Mac mini M2 Pro base model came up on eBay at a great starting price, so I bid on it at the starting price thinking I had no hope of winning it and somehow no one else bid on it and I got it. It's been a month now and once I got over the anxiety of running out of memory, as I've not had a base spec Mac in years, it's been a really surprising machine and is quite a speed demon. The Mini I got had very low usage and not a scratch on it and still has warranty coverage from Apple until mid next year, so I scored quite the bargain. Like you said in your review of this model, it just gets on with the job and I've noticed the caching works really well and it learns your work patterns, which boosts load times of apps you use often. I use the Mini Pro for editing RU-vid videos, some coding and in my day job as a teacher, I use it for web surfing, email, video conferencing with Zoom and Teams and online teaching. It's not missed a beat.

Hello Mark, Thanks for the great video. I find myself in the situation of needing to replace my outdated pre-2012 iMac 27. I have been looking at the Mac Mini M2 Pro and Mac Studio options, but now another question has arisen for me. According to rumors, Apple intends to introduce the new M3 Chip in 2024, and honestly I would not want to buy an M2 if the M3 with 3 nanometer technology comes out soon. Yes, I am a geek in wanting to have the latest on the market when I go to buy something. My question, what would you recommend me to buy now, to get out of the way, to then take advantage of Apple's refurb plan to purchase the new M3. And one last question, from an external drive can I manage my DropBox? Thank you very much,

I’d love to get a Mini-Pro but frankly there isn’t enough RAM. Like you, I am interested in music production but I want to use mine for `orchestral Samples which are very heavy on RAM requirements. The more, the merrier. And some DAWS are starting to use the GPU processor for music. So I want to future proof my machine.😊

Nice review Mark. I am considering the Studio but with 1TB SSD. I do the usual general stuff as well as coding, LPX and Lightroom, but I also use a pretty cpu intensive app with my amateur radio kit called Thetis, which is Windows only, so I use parallels 19 for Mac Pro edition. On my 2019 i5 iMac with 40Gb RAM, I often get 55% cpu load (sometimes more) especially when running concurrent with Zoom, so I am hoping the Studio with its 30 GPU cores will help significantly in that regard. Be interesting to read your thoughts. John

"If your budget is $2000".. Yeah, but it doesn't come with a monitor, so you still need to spend a buttload of cash to get that, especially if you go after the studio display ,which is likely itself around $2000 (depending on options) - never mind the Pro Display XDR. It's why I wish they'd do a new iMac - a proper one, not that small 24" version.

I’ve been going back and forth on this for months. I’m driving an old 2014 mini (16GB RAM, 2 TB storage on 2 different 1TB SSD’s (on the 2014’s storage was upgradable). It’s showing it’s age.. it’s slow. Latest version of Turbo Tax drives it into the ground. I want a studio simply because I believe it’s a better class of machine but I can certainly get by on an M2 Pro mini. By the time I bump up the RAM.. I’m in Studio territory anyway. I need to look at the specs again. No video processing, no heavy lifting except for a VM.

I have a 2010 iMac 27” that I’m shocked still works, but it’s SO slow! I’m leaning towards what you recommended with mini with the M2 Pro, but since I don’t want to outgrow it, I’m leaning towards going halfway to the studio by upgrading the memory to 32. I’m a simple home user, no graphic design, no complicated programming. Basically internet, email, RU-vid, Amazon music etc. But I usually have most of these running at the same time and keep several Chrome tabs open at once. Is going from 16 to 32 overkill? I just don’t want to regret my purchase over $40/month for a year.

Mark, thank you for this video comparison. I recall you mentioning in several videos that you built your channel on a Mac Mini (M1). When you do video work, what is the longest video time (8-10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour)? I have a collection of videos, all greater than 45 minutes, that I need to create. What do you think about Mac Mini M2 vs Mac Mini M2 Pro primarily for music production, and occasional video work? Except for differences in the GPU and 2 extra cores in the CPU, they’re pretty similar aren’t they. Or are there other hidden tech specs at work here. I am trying to decided between a M1 Refurbished 1 TB SSD and 64 Gigs ram or a new M2 Base Model, 32 gigs of ram and at most trying to upgrade to 1 TB SSD which seems to make a big difference in speeds you upgrade the SSD even though I have many externals ones. I am a professional videographer and have been getting by with an M1 Air Believe it or not, but recently been getting the out of memory warnings and beach balls some times on longer edits.. Max Tech wrote me saying the M2 Max Studio base model would be better than the M1 Max with 64 gigs of ram due to the newer video "cards" in the M2's? Your opinion?

I am also wondering why so many RU-vidrs and comments on videos are saying you really need to upgrade the SSD at least bc apparently the read and write speeds are much better than the standard 512 SSD?

I'll admit I didn't need the M2 Pro Mac mini and just bought it for future proofing. I come from having a maxed out late 2012 i5 mini with 16 gigs of ram and an SSD. All I can say is WOW. The M2 Pro is incredibly faster. A Carbon Copy Cloner back up on my older mini took close to half an hour for about a 3 gig backup. The new M2 Pro does the same backup but at about 6 gigs in 19 seconds. That's my own experience about how much faster it is than the old one. A few things I've learned. If you're going to shut it down to move it, turn off you wireless keyboard and trackpad BEFORE it shuts down. If you don't do this, it won't connect properly once you reboot. You're left with having to connect a wired keyboard and mouse to log in and then connect you wireless accessories. Lastly, I've encountered a couple of occasions where the trackpad went a little crazy with the curser jumping all over the place and being super sensitive making it hell to try and close the game I was using and restart the computer. Once you restart everything is back to normal. On both occasions I was playing Asphalt 8+ from the Apple Arcade. Weird. Don't now why it did it. Otherwise it was rock solid.

I bought the Mac mini M2 Pro and it only lasted three weeks before it failed. Apple took it back and refunded me. Now I am deciding if I repurchase the same machine or just buy the Mac Studio base unit. I have had many Mac computers and this was the first failure for me. Glad it had the special of a 30 day return on it.

Specking your mac mini to highest unbinned 19-core GPU + 32GB RAM already puts it to Mac Studio territory.

I went for a maxed out mini pro , don't like the size or design of the studio plus it's got noise issues 32/12 core/2tb ssd

Then it might have been a defective one, never seen a Mac Studio with any noise issue whatsoever.

I have ordered the M2 Pro Mac Mini with 10/16 cores, 32gb ram and 1TB for £1840 (got a £160 discount). To get the same ram/ssd in the Mac Studio I’d have to spend an extra £460, which is a lot of money. Whilst I’d benefit from the 30 core GPU, I know I’m going to buy a MacBook Pro next year so I’m happy to stick with the Mac Mini and upgrade the MBP when the time comes - I swear, Apple don’t make it easy for us to choose a mac! 😅

Did you talk about the cost of the extra hub you need for the Mac Mini (because it shows up over and over again in the video)?

I opted for the M2 Mac Studio but unfortunately what I didn't expect was for my BenqSW270C display to start playing up with it. USB C cable not cutting it and the Benq monitor is not thunderbolt.

All sorted now gents thank you. Turns out I'd calibrated with old Palette Master software setting it up with the studio. I used Palette Master Ultimate and problem fixed.

I picked up a M2 Pro mac mini with 16GB unified memory but 1TB storage for the faster NAND. Sneaky Apple slowing the 512GB model down to 3000Mbps, when the 1TB is 6000Mbps

I am in the same boat. A refurbishes M1 Max Studio 64 ram and 1 TB SSD is almost the same as the base model M2 and or upgraded M2 Mini Pro and should be as good. Decisions decisions

"For everyone else," the choice would be the current iMac. $1,299 or about 1,015 pounds sterling. Which has a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Sufficient for all the usual personal computer tasks. The Mac Mini ($599-$1299 or 468-1,015 pounds sterling) would be for those who use any specialized software. Graphics, movie, music, orbital mechanics, etc. Because you need the extra processing power and 16GB unified memory. And if you bought the iMac but later you found you needed More? Get a Mac Mini, and use the iMac in screen sharing mode. The Mac Studio is for everyone left. With processes which in total use at least 48GB, this is our only choice.

I think your comparison between these two machines is on point, but I find it strange that you'd recommend the M2 Pro Mini to most people over the base M2, which can be similarly configured for around $300 cheaper. The M2 with 16 GB RAM and 512 GB storage comes in at $1000 in the US. I suspect that most of your viewers would be well served by this machine for 5-10 years before needing to consider an upgrade.

A max mini with 16gb ram & mz pro Mac mini is more then enough power unless your working for Disney 😂 & making millions at that point you can buy a tower from apple & get Mac Pro for 7000$ but the studio is nice but it’s 700$ more & I used that for all my recording equipment and programs but the studio looks nice but I rather get a studio display next with my Mac mini and maybe for storage

@@MarkEllisReviews I get that, you need to get paid, and most people dont pay for premium and the like. I dont even mind the sponsor spots, just giving some feed back on its length. You will have more to consider in the back ground regarding the value you get for the add and how long it needs to be for you to be compensated. Fair enough. Hopefully the comment provides some additional information when you make those calculations. I might listen to a 30 second add in an 7.5min video, I am definitely skipping through a 90second add in an 8.5mins video.

@@lannyfips the length is due to contractual obligations with the sponsor. And, as you may not have noticed, I always indicate where the sponsor is with a chapter marker, so you can indeed skip if desired.
