DeWALT Tools has o new 20V Max Impact Driver that you've never heard of, it's the 20V MAX 1/4 IN. BRUSHLESS CORDLESS IMPACT DRIVER (DCF840B). We unbox this newest impact Driver from Dewalt, then compare specifications to the dewalt DCF887, as well as the very new ATOMIC 20V MAX 1/4 IN. BRUSHLESS CORDLESS 3-SPEED IMPACT DRIVER (DCF850B). We then have a tool test comparison by driving drywall screws, wood, screws, lag fasteners, and then drill holes using one inch self feeding paddle bits in to commonly used building materials and lumber. You'll be shocked by the tool comparison results!

I have the 887, but my fav is still the old brushed 885... I just did about 100 sq foot of deck repair, had some help so we traded off both the 887 and 885 and agreed we preferred the old brushed version. I do love the controllable variable speed on the old 885.

My take after using the 850 a couple days now. The “soft start” or whatever kicks in and it takes a little bit to come into the power. I ran a few 3 1/2” framing screws into a triple 2x4 and drove right through the first one. It definitely gets hot quicker. I’m still not sure if I like it more or not.

I took your advice and I bought a DCF887B. It has been discontinued and is getting hard to find. I liked it so much I bought 2 more !!!! I am very demanding and I expect a lot from my tools. I run 3 Stihl chainsaws back to back like an Iron-man Competition and I do the same thing with impacts. I have one ready as soon as the battery dies and then grab the next one. The 887 stands the test. I installed over 300 feet of 6 foot wooden privacy fence with screws and the 887 made it a pleasure. ONE TOUGH TOOL !!!!

@Eli Fire. Source material please. Also the 840 impact actually seems to have more metal on its motor housing then any of the other dewalt offerings so even if your assumption had some truth to it which im scheptical of the 840 would actually seem to be the best choice seeing as its if the smallest of the impacts meaning less plastic and it also has more metal on its housing then other offerings. And finally I wouldnt consider any Dewalt brand impact to be a cheap plastic impact. Maybe your referring to non brand cheap Chinese knockoffs or something.

After getting my tools stolen and replacing everything with a little bit different overall kit I truly believe that the 850/840 combo is the best impact driver combo you could carry every day at work. Get a subcompact xr drill driver, hammer drill, and the atomic sds and you’re absolutely kitted out for most jobs. I much prefer that combo to my old 850/887 combo… the 887 just punches too similar to the 850 but with the longer body. Not much of an advantage having both. But the 840 makes for an extremely comfortable and light but still capable 20v secondary for doing jobs where you will be using the driver on many small repeated tasks

Agreed. Haven't been in the market for a driver for decades (not a contractor) and been using a cheapy Ryobi. Man I have missed out! I went to help out a local school tear down some desk to donate. Needed a driver to remove decades old set screws. I was blown away by the Dewalts some of the teachers had. So I went out and got the 850 and got an extra battery at Home Depot all for 149.

That 840 is a beast, I also noticed that the 850 sorta bounced when I tested it against my others drivers. Almost like it had a hammering mode. I was a little disappointed due to the way it feels when driving bigger screws.

Maybe you got a lemon? I have 2 850's (along with just about every other major model impact you can name) and both have been great, especially with big engineered structural fasteners. I bought a Dewalt 12v impact/drill combo recently, and the driver also has rattling noise. The one on display at the store didn't have that issue. The DCF 840 is basically just the 12 volt Extreme but in 20 volts with no settings and a few hundred more rpms. I'm just confused why they didn't release it last year to go up against the 20 volt Atomic last year. Or perhaps more confusing, why did Dewalt make the crappy Atomic from last year when they had this new Atomic, that is actually really powerful and compact.

I've got a buddy that bought the 850 and drill in a combo kit with 2, 1.7Ah batteries and a charger. I can tell you that you need the variable speed/torque settings for that bad boy, cause it has quite appetite for bits, screws, bolts or whatever until you finish the learning curve of this newly available torque. I'm not bad mouthing DeWalt by any means, as definitely have an impact driver, or hex driver for everything. This new 840 sure seems like an incredible value, and likely to be paired with an equally cool drill, to help get more people on to the yellow team.

@@franciscosaiz87 I know what you mean. I got lucky. The guy only had one of them. I almost bought the kit with the regular batteries but I wanted the power stack

I am very impressed with single speed DeWalt impacts and I use my 887 everyday. I think my 887 is slowing down finally after two years.

is it an imperative that new impact type bits are needed for the 840? Do I throw away my old bits?

Hello again Vince, Jim and Vcg Thank you for another Great Video. Could you do the tests with the Power Stack Battery. As it is The 840 or 850 are both Great Tools. But there is something about the profile of the 840. I think it might get into more places. Again thank you

For smaller fasteners where there is less torque required to overcome the forces preventing the screw from driving the higher IPM will win as every impact is moving the screw enough that the faster impacts take the lead on the slower impacts even though said faster impacts have less energy per impact. The 850 retakes the lead on very large thick fasteners because it’s hammer has a lot more energy behind each impact. So even though it’s turning the screw less times per minute than the 840, each turn of the 850 is so much greater than each turn of the 840 that it can drive the fastener quicker still with less impacts

I have both, they are both great tools I would compare it too for example should I get the DCD 998 or the DCD 999 hammer drills, they are both almost the same and good. My personal opinion I like the 850 it doesn’t get as hot when using it throughout the day.
