My husband is on the spectrum. We’ve been on keto for nearly three years and in addition to all of the other positive results we’ve experienced, most notably was the improvement in his asperger symptoms. He describes feeling much more calm, clear minded and in control of himself. I cannot recommend keto enough!!! This way of eating literally is a life saver!! Thank you Dr. Berg!!!
AUTISM / EPILEPSY DIET: • 5% carbs • 15% protein • 80% fat (25%from MCT's) The diet could consist of foods, such as: • Fatty meat/fatty sausage • Coconut oil (MCT oil) • Tallow • Eggs • Fatty fish • Fatty nuts You would also want to add electrolytes, B vitamins, and trace minerals to the diet. (more details on the narration below the video) THANK YOU DR BERG!!
I'm an older adult on the spectrum. MCT does help! HEALTHY Keto has gotten my gut microbiome in balance. Everything I've learned from Dr. Berg and applied has helped so much. I believe autistic people tend to get over medicated and it makes things worse in the long run.
I’ve never put my daughter on medications because I know the long term damage it can do to the system when used for long durations. It’s really not good for young brains to be given so many chemicals when their brains are not yet fully developed.
@@sacq13 Hi! My local health food store had many different ones. I got Bulletproof Brain Octane. Search Dr. Bergs videos on MCT. It convinced me it to do MCT in place of butter or coconut oil. Especially if you're doing intermittent fasting because you don't feel hungry.
@@ceilconstante7813 have an HFAutistic teen. We both have tried to take Bulletproof BO and some other brands as well....end result is Always diarrhea. I was down to a few drops from a dropper and it can bring it on. Ive talked to others that have the same issue. We started slow and small amount. I now wonder will we be able to use it. I guess there are capsules but will that do this to us?
The diet Dr. Berg recommends, ist similar to the GAPS Diet, Dr. Natasha Campbell- Macbride uses to heal children with autism, ADS and other diseases. There are many ideas how you can apply this on children in her book and on the RU-vid channel of Marisa Tolsma, called " The bumblebee apothecary". The idea is, that those kinds of disease come from bad digestion. The toxins from incomplete digestion and a poor microbiome get into the bloodstream and as far as into the brain, were they cause damage. You have to fix the gut to heal.
I have an autistic child and did that diet for some more restrictions and it improved her function in everything 1000% so for all parents please do it .
I have high functioning autism and can contest that a high fat diet helps me with eye contact and less stemming. It makes me more focused and less scattered and rigid. And Dr Berg is right about no gluten and casein (dairy). When I cut those foods out i noticed I started gravitating more towards people and being able to show more empathy.
You can eat dairy like homemade yoghurt that is fermented, from raw milk or kefir from raw milk. They have no lactose and no casein, because the healthy bacteria feed on lactose and casein. So when you wait 24 hours of fermentation, they are gone completely. Check out " The Bumblebee Apothecary", there are some vids about how to make homemade dairy that is okay for people with autism. I' m not related to that channel, but I highly recommend it.
I have aspergers and you have described my own diet almost to a T. I have been tweaking and learning what my body responds to for well over a decade now. If I had to describe it simply it would be somewhere between your version of keto and Mark Sisson's primal blueprint diet. I do have a few tweaks that are worth looking into: -Skyr (Icelandic yoghurt, high in protein) is an acceptable form of dairy which causes little issues due to the way it is made. It has to be real skyr though, which most western brands are not selling. -Goat and sheep cheeses like feta, pecorino etc are fantastic additions to get your dairy fix with no dairy. -Switch between cooking with olive oil, coconut oil, and macadamia nut oil. Choose a different one to cook with or top with every day. -Become masterful at egg and avocado recipes. Combine them, mash them together, make unique guacamoles and super healthy omelettes. These are an everyday staple which can be combined in endless ways and provide a ton of essential nutrition. -You can goat and sheep protein powder if you search for it and it is delicious. This is for the more physically active of us who want an occasional protein shake or high protein desert but without resorting to whey or vegetable protein powders. Hope that helps :)
I love you, Dr. Berg! I'm 43 and an officially diagnosed autistic (Asperger's). I'm addicted to your videos: I've been watching dozens of them daily, following your advice, continuing to make tweaks to my nutrition as I learn from you, and not only has my health improved many times over, but also my autistic struggles have dramatically reduced: my BRAIN is functioning clearly, calmly, and consistently, without ADHD-like distractions, my communication skills at work and when running errands have improved tremendously, I no longer fidget, I'm calm, I'm focused, and I'm no longer depressed. My muscles are getting stronger and I have so much ENERGY! I can't thank you enough! You've turned me into a keto & OMAD believer! I also *LOVE* your Veggie Solution *UNFLAVOURED* powder: it's earthy, not sweet at all, tastes DELICIOUS, and I crave it! I also love your cruciferous tablets, and of course, your wheatgrass juice powder. P.S. I wish you would make an *UNFLAVOURED* electrolyte powder: it's so sweet and I HATE sweet foods (love bitter foods) and I'm allergic to stevia (ragweed, pollen allergy) so it makes me nauseous & dizzy!
@@muslimah_peace1907 I was silent until I was 4, then I spoke in full sentences, no baby talk. However, I still did not respond to questions -- even though I understood everything.
Thank you, 4 out of my 6 kids are diagnosed on the spectrum, and they are all so different especially in communication and socialization skills. I will do my best to try improving diet and let you know how it goes. As things get more difficult the doctors and their mother (my ex) want to medicate them, which I strongly oppose. This is close to my heart and I wanted to comment so you'd know I truly appreciate your advice more than can be expressed in this place.
Check out the GAPS diet by Dr. Natasha Campbell- Macbride. It is similar to Dr. Bergs recommendations and was designed especially for children with autism, ADS etc.
My heart goes out to you and your family. My partner has Aspergers. You may want to look into the GPL-tox test from Great Plains Lab. There are also other labs that do chemical/toxin tests. My partner was really high in a lot of toxins. We do glutathione IVs to detox her and I do think it’s helped. Also the gut microbes are often out of balance as well.
As an autistic adult I work with the public, go figure. It's so hard. I use so much energy to do this and then I come home and just want to hide and spend a lot of time sleeping, not answering the phone, not running errands, etc just to recover that energy. Coworkers have no idea. Stressful days are especially taxing and I have trouble sitting still, focusing, eye contact...but I have noticed the MCT oil helps A LOT!!! And while I continue to work on cleaning up my diet the nutritional yeast helps me to temper reactions to loud noises, panic attacks are way down, headaches from the lights aren't triggered as easily, etc. Thanks so much. My life has become easier.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember that diet when it first came out, I think in the 80’s. It was revolutionary. I think this was around the same time when “science” started coming out about how they felt everyone should be eating very lean meats. Man, talk about them going in the wrong direction. It’s really a shame that so many could of benefited from this research. Great work Dr Berg!!!
Heck, I remember when people were being marketed with the idea of switching from healthy butter to heart and artery destroying hydrogenated vegetable oils (margarine.)
I thought about changing to keto diet for my 6 yrs old autistic child like a month ago. Since then, he has improved with speech and cognitive. It's amazing. I give him a lot of Omega-3 in form of pills but I have to break out the capsules and pour fish oil on to his food. I think I am going to try to give him Krill, no smell. Also, one or two chocolate fat bombs a day is great and he loves it. Reducing his craves for sugar snacks. We stopped giving him snacks between meals. I'll try to give him MCT oil later. I also give him ground lamb with tomato eggs soup and he seems very happy after the meals. What you mentioned in this video is so great, kidda confirming my theory of changing keto diet to autistic kids. I'll contact his special-ed teacher about this information so they will be happy about this and may be able to help other kids with same issue. Thank you so much!
I gave my kid 1 table spoon of MCT Oil poured into his grass-fed ground beef spaghetti. I got amazing result. He felt happy, jumping and playing. He got interested in learning and tried to speak. He also tried to listen and repeat what we say. He was usually non verbal kid and not interested in our conversation before. He tried to say what I asked him after the meal. My chronic stress just went away and I am so happy. Thank you dr.
Im on the spectrum and you are so spot on. Alot of these foods you mentioned have always helped me. Eggs, sausage, mct oil, electrolytes, non starchy veggies.... spot on Doc. You just confirmed what my body naturally knew. Sometimes its good to listen to your instincts
Please keep these coming. I have 2 boys and both are on the spectrum. The older one who is 6 is also a very picky eater. It's almost like the Autism is just a bug that has high jacked his body because the only things he will eat is exactly the things he shouldn't. Everything else makes him sick. Thank you for the content and your time
Try making your own chocolate... cacao butter, cacao powder, coconut oil, and stevia/monk fruit... you can even add sunflower butter... there’s lots of recipes online...
I'm So sorry. My two yr old is autistic and only eats chips. I give her pediasure with baby food mixed. Can you give me any tips of what else food I could sneak in her bottle
@SeekmyfacechildrenYasharahla have you try to make gluten free pancakes, soft waffles, muffin ( steam vegetables can go there)? Or cuttle(meat or fish+ vegetables)?
Thank you 🙏 we adopted 4 siblings and 2 of the 4 are on the spectrum. Our almost 3 years old twin boys were just diagnosed with autism. Thank you again for all you do .
Two nutrients I was expecting to hear specifically about were DHA (from fish or algae) and methyl B12, both of which are great for the autistic brain. I realize you mentioned fatty fish and b vitamins, but I think these two deserve even greater emphasis. As always thanks for your fantastic videos Dr Berg!
@@اللهلطيفبعباده-ك6ش also CBD oil and THC oil and black seed oil will make a massive difference will unlock the vocabulary they already had in their head and the vocabulary will just explode.
Dr. Berg, I have three kids with autism, two girls and one boy. Since I found your channel, I have started implementing a keto diet for the entire family. I have seen enormous progresses in all of them. Thanks, Dr. Berg
@@rawwoodgifts8117 No, I haven't. I'm not part of the Facebook group. We live in Argentina. Here, we do not have many treatments available for Autism other than medication.
You are one of the best doctors which I met across my life. Following your videos and instructions of healthy feeding I lost my weight and feel myself much more better than before. Thank you so much 😊 being with us . Proud of you Doctor.
I'm on the spectrum as is one of my children - we both do better on low carb, high fat. I find eye contact a lot easier and my anxiety eases significantly. My son also improves dramatically but like most kids it's hard to keep him low carb around other children!
Yes, there was this experiment on 2 mices (one autistic and one normal) that had different gut bacteria. They switched the bacteria of the mouse (through fecal transplant i think) and their behaviour reversed. Then they gave the autistic mouse the nutrients produced by non-autistic bacteria (taurine and an acid which name i dont remember) and the autistic mouse became normal
I can attest to this. I’m autistic and have had horrible gut issues my whole life bc of ehlers danlos syndrome, which is common in people with asd. Now I have no colon plus an ileostomy, and I feel my asd traits are more pronounced/difficult in some ways. I also have high metals
Watch some of Dr Stephanie Seneff videos on glyphosate. She has peer reviewed papers and studies done proving it to cause microbiome problems and autism
I’m a 37 going on 38 years old man with high functioning autism and my social and communication skills have significantly improved since I eat healthy (only ice cream in moderation) and exercise almost daily by walking at least 4.0 miles around the neighborhood. I also am able to think more clearly and I have less mood swings and my listening 👂 comprehension is much sharper! Basically no dairy 🥛/gluten or processed foods with added sugar.
@Shitu Kabir thank you for sharing. I’m almost a middle aged adult though and no longer “young” although I definitely feel so like I was 25 years ago at age 14.
I told my doctor five years ago that I had all the symptoms for autism and I am 43 now. Thank Allah for keto, dr Fung, and dr Berg. I now don’t have any of these symptoms.
OMG that is such a beautiful story. Have you shared your successes on Dr Berg's website or his Facebook group? Many people will greatly benefit from reading them.
I have changed my toddlers diet I switched to gluten free oats milk and almond milk instantly I can see his appetite improving mostly he eats what I cook.
Agree much appropriate Dr.Berg for this informative video regarding this topic 😊❤👍 so not sure if you have any studies address the microbiome affects on Autism children or maybe you can do a video of what kinds of probiotic or strains of bacteria they will need to enhance their 2nd brain
It's better to take baby steps as they won't be accepting the change. My kid has ADHD so I am slowly introducing whatever you had mentioned in earlier videos. MCT oil wud be my bet to start with.
I am high functioning autist. I found that intermittant fasting with periodic prolonged fasting (48-72h once per month) and reduction in carbs helps me with sensory overload. I can much more remain unstressed and more focused with high amounts of noise. I think my understanding of emotions has also improved. I still fail handling mistakes but on the other hand I still eat way more than 10 grams of carbs, considering my high caloric intake.
OmyGosh I am glad I found you Dr Berg, few months ago I started my new journey of a healthy living lifestyle and I have an autistic child, who just want to eat Bacon all the time and basic plain Carbury Buttons chocolate and apple juice, this is really helpful and I am a new Fan and lifetime follower you've gained 🙏🏾🥰❤️🙌🏾
Bacon is rich in b1 which is vital for the nervous system. You may want to check Dr Berg's videos on b1 benfotiamine. As well as his videos on electrolytes, especially on the correct amount of potassium.

Scientist have found out autistic people have way less Intestinal good probiotics ...I think upping there pro biotics would def..help...as the good bacteria in the intestines communicates with the brain
I'm on the autism spectrum but I prefer a vegan diet as I'm not a fan of meat. If you cannot do keto folks, try vegan and gluten free if you have autism as some ppl on the spectrum struggle with tolerating dairy and gluten.
I'm autistic and have gluten-free plus a vegetarian and am also noticing I get very tired after eating carbs. I'm struggling to find healthy things to eat!
@@BadgerBotherer1 I understand... But try Meat... No doubt you went vegan for mostly health reasons... Switch for 30 days to mostly meat for health reasons. Everyone is different but let your body decide

💯 I am so glad you made this video... for those actually adhering to this diet... Look into making you own chocolate (fat bombs) with a 50/50 mix of Cacao butter and coconut oil as your base... along with cacao powder and stevia/monk fruit for a sweetener... People should be prioritizing protein and limiting carbs, and the fats should be the balance. Too many people are pushing low-protein, and it's hurting people.
@@ElectricBlanket1122 15% is not a quantity of protein. It's a ratio. Let's say 15% of 2000 calories. That would be about 75g. The infamous absolute minimum is .8g per kilogram bodyweight. Any form of exercise is going to require more. As we age, we require more because we don't utilize it as well. Thus, in order to thrive, it's often suggested that a more realistic figure is a gram per pound. Anyone who has weight to lose is going to need A LOT more than 15%-closer to 30%, because they're going to have to cut WAY back on carbs and not overeat fat. It's best not to look at a percentage, with regard to protein, but instead prioritize the actual amount of protein accordingly, then add energy with healthy fat.
@@ElectricBlanket1122 By the way, just going by percentages, that's going to be a LOT of carbs. We're told by the fatphobic community that we should stay under 30% fat. That means 55% of our calories should come from carbs? That's insane! Personally, I'd maximize protein, minimize carbs, and add only sufficient fat.

I love this, the problem is a lot of children on the spectrum eat a super limited diet of mainly non-veggoe carbs and some protein. Many of them have eating jags where they'll only eat 1-3 foods. I have sturents who will only eat McDonald's French fries and chicken nuggets, for example. I think this keto diet could work IF it's started very young like in toddlerhood. Changing to this diet would be very difficult like any change with these kids is. But presumably they'd eat the keto foods if that's all there is. Hopefully they would. It'll be the parents not giving in to their child's demands for junk that will be the toughest part of it.
I have twins boys with autism, they stem a lot and scream a lot too. We went to church today and was asked to keep them quiet which is nearly impossible so we had to leave. Someone sent me this video as we were leaving. I will try these things and hopefully they will help because they have a really rough time during their day. They’re very moody, sad, and just over all bothered by anything.
My son has Autism and greatly improved at the age of 5 1/2 yrs by omitting gluten , dairy , soy and beef from his diet . He went through 2 weeks of feeling bad , then suddenly started saying words for the first time after loosing speech for 3 years ! He also started making meaningful eye contact ! Now if he has one of those items to eat/ drink he has diarrhea, headaches and stops talking until it’s out of his system . Now many years later we went vegan as well and he has improved more especially after increasing broccoli consumption.
That's amazing you are considering improving their gut chemistry to help aid them in life. Once their gut chemistry which strongly connects to brain chemistry, heals and recovers, their future lives would be undoubtedly most impacted in the best possible way. That's the best help for life you can give them :)

Great video Dr. Berg. Now I am extra motivated to start the keto life style change. This will be an extreme challenge. But I know the pay off will be beneficial to my autistic son and family. I would like to see a video on this topic with alternatives for eggs and nut allergies. My son is allergic to egg and peanuts. We generally stay away from all nuts. Thank you.
Some people tolerate duck eggs better than chicken. Either way, have you been buying only organic pastured eggs? Might make a difference if you can find a local organic farmer at a farmers market.

One thing about kids with autism is they have very persistent food aversions/ preferences- just getting them to eat while on ADD meds is a constant struggle
Eliminate ALL processed foods immediately. If that means 3 day water fast, so be it. Removing gluten, pectin, MSG and other glutamates will dramatically improve your child's cognition, empathy, communication, mood, patience, creativity, desire for connection and affection, and will eliminate ADD symptoms. Once the OCD tendencies subside, many more foods will become an option for your child.
My last-born 17 yr old daughter asked me a while back to be put on a keto diet. She has ASD. Can't wait to try the MST oil. She goes through phases of being sociable and withdrawing from people.
As a retired spec ed teacher let me tell you it depends on the type of autism. Some will only ever eat just one food otherwise you see them getting violent.
Hi Dr. Berg. An off-topic: everytime I consume Nutritional Yeast I get rapid heartbeats and immediate stomach cramps then diarrhea. Other family members do not have this problem. MCT Oil Huh? I've taken it before but not in huge amounts, one Major issue is I fucking LOVE milk so that will be hard to give up...I can't wait to hear more. Maybe grab a jar of MCT on my next shopping trip. Yeah, I only recently found out I'm on the spectrum so I have been changing my diet for the better but that milk man...also sugars.
Josh G. I recently read a book on adhd autism and other disorders...The reason why you may love milk so much is your getting opiod type receptors from the milk. My little boy was the same way, he would go crazy for his milk. When we removed milk from his diet, we saw so much improvement in his health.
Hi Dr. Berg, my niece has a six-year-old little girl who appears to be on the spectrum. I’m a LMFT in California and she lives in Arizona and is having a hard time finding somebody to help her. Her daughter will only eat chicken nuggets and french fries or she refuses to eat. There was a comment in here about someone feeling like their child had a bug in their brain and won’t let them eat anything else! When she took her to a therapist, they would only spoke to Jessica for a half hour every two weeks, but never met her daughter. Then they suggested her to take her daughter to psychiatrist for medication. They put her on some harsh psychotropic drugs, which increased her angry outbursts! When she seen the change in her daughter, she took her off the meds right away! It’s sickens me to see how the psychiatrist just want to push medication‘s and not try to deal with her problems with a more natural way! Do you have any suggestions to help get her daughter on a keto diet and for any doctors in Arizona that are trustworthy! Any help would be appreciated as my niece is really scared seeing what’s happening to her daughter and not knowing how to help her! Thank you
I agree. In my line of work I have families visit. Some have autistic kids and usually a parent too. Those families all have poor diets. They medicate their kids rather than cooking differently. The autistic parent stops the other parent from making changes. They throw tantrums like a drug addiction being told they can’t have their fix. The other parent gives up because it’s 4 against 1.
It may help somewhat, but prevent entirely - I doubt it. In my special needs community of parents I have met many whose child was permanently changed after getting their shots in infancy. There are many environmental aspects to developing ASD imo.
@@bkgdnoize111 Have these children been put on healthy keto at all? Including using DHA rich foods like wild caught cod liver? And using b1 as benfotiamine? And higher amounts of electrolytes, especially potassium? Dr Berg's videos on these are very helpful.
I've been diagnosed with autism 2 years ago, and up until the I ate a very poor diet, wheat products, refined sugar, cereals, but also some good whole vegan foods. This video is very interesting, because I was having problems digesting wheat products. I now wonder if its due to autism.

Yes this works! Back in August 2020, I started following your recommendations and in combination with your videos on ADHD, Recommentation for Autism, intermittent fasting, my child became verbal under 2 months. However, my daughter IBS / inflammation in the colon type symptoms, which is my primary road block / set back for her progress. I believe if her gut is fully healed everything else will fall in place. However, I cannot find an effective treatment for her gut problems. I went to different doctors and no one cared to listen to my concerns. I watch your video on inflammation in the colon and will try it. I will look to do a food allergy test, to eliminate all foods that she cannot tolerate. My daughter is a picky eater, does not eat any vegetables or fruits. She only eats apples and sometimes rarely bananas. I started her on a GFCF diet about a month ago. If you have any additional recommendations, I am all ears.
