One thing you didn’t take into account, is the ability to mount these to your binos. Mag view gets an added bonus in the fact that it hooks up to your binos as well. Not everyone like’s running spotters, I for one hate them.
Very good point. Ollie just came out with a bio adapter so go to their website and check it out. Let me know if you end up getting it and how it works for you.
Hey great video! If I may, I suggest trying out the Novagrade phone adapter as well. Once it’s set up for your particular scope and phone it’s real quick and accurate. Plus, if you ever change your phone or scope you are covered. All aluminum other than the rings is what I appreciate as well. I haven’t hunted with it yet but it has served me well at 600 yard black powder silhouette matches.
Nice review, I think you did an excellent job setting up categories for comparison. A couple of other options that are fairly popular are the Novagrade and the ScopeCam. I've owned both, though they each have newer models than what I've used. An important quality to me is the ability to use the same setup on a variety of scopes and phones so I lean towards the more universal options. That Gosky looks like a great value in that arena, if a bit slow to setup. I get a new phone every 2 years or so and hate having to buy a completely new system/case with each phone. The ability to get it set up quickly, and it being lightweight and pocket friendly are important to me. I'm pretty happy with the ScopeCam and being able to stick on a cheap attachment sticker if I upgrade phones. It also works flawlessly with both my Kowa 553 and 883, or my binos for that matter. That Ollin looks like a dream to use but it's pricey, scope specific and would need an upgraded phone case with each phone. And they don't even offer it for my current phone model anyway. Benefits and drawbacks to each system I suppose, that's why it's so great that you compared them on different attributes so people can decide which characteristics are most important to them and make an informed decision.
Big fan of the Ollin system, solving problems I never knew existed. I actually prefer to have a separate case for my phone vs glassing setup because I don't want a magnet on the back of my case all day since I work in the structural steel industry where all sorts of little metal shavings and bits would be stuck to it. My experience with digiscoping is there's give and take. If you want the best performance, attachment speed etc for your specific phone and optic, then you'll have to bite down and buy something that's specifically designed for it which always costs more. I was a fan of the phone scope systems as well until they refused to honor their "lifetime warranty" with my last setup. Case fell on the ground and broke a piece of the locking ring, the called it "deliberate damage" which their warranty does not cover. A solid product but seemed to weasel out of honoring their warranty.
Awesome review thank you very much!! Now that Ollin has become so popular I was able to snag a MagView for almost 50% off. So far I enjoy it. You do a great job of explaining and comparing stuff I would love to see more like this in the hunting world!
Great job on the review! Another variable to consider is the cost between the systems when you are using them with multiple optics, like a bino and a spotter, or in my case, (1) bino, (2) compact spotter for backpack hunting and (3) full size one for the range.
Nice review. I would have liked to see you include the scopecam universal magnetic system. Also, the big downside of Ollin is that you have to buy one of their adapters for each optic you own - at their prices, that is a very big investment. scopecam univeral with magnetic attachment might be a better option for those with multiple optics.
Great great great review sir 🫡 Spot on with everything you said about the magview. I own the magview, while I like it, it can be finnicky at first to position the camera on the scope it does get easier and faster with practice. I also like the lens cover on the magview, it works well as a sun shade when positioned in the 90degree position when looking through the scope with your eye. I like the idea of the olin system and the fast mounting but that case is a no go for me. Hopefully they come out with a nicer case and maybe I’ll give it a shot but for now I like being able to use any case I want, the Otterbox commuter case works great, no raised ridges around the iPhone lenses to get in the way of mounting, as you mentioned. Buying a new case everytime I get a new phone is complete bs, also, potentially having to buy new adapters for the scope itself. No thanks..
Fantastic comment Fab7! You make some fantastic points. I think if ollin could make an attachment that could go on any case that was ergonomic and didn’t get in the way, they would be unstoppable!!!
In my opinion, ollin is great for quickness and ease of use, but magview wins for using multiple lenses. I have a newer galaxy with 5 lenses. Sometimes I want to use the 1x lens, sometimes I want to use the 3x/10x dedicated lenses. Also if I pull my phone off the optic I want to use a variety of lenses and the ollin blocks all but one. The ability to use a mag mount in the truck with magview is also a handy thing I hadn't considered. Plus you pick the form factor of the case and it goes in a pocket better due to that. It seems to boil down to a personal preference of quickness with limit to features for the ollin or harder to setup but easier to carry without blocking phone features. I'd go for the magview personally.
I think you over scored the Olin case. You neglected to mention that the Olin is phone specific so you have to buy a new case every time you get a new phone and they don’t have a case for all phones. The Magview can go on any phone on any case. It’s a buy once, cry once product. Also, It has never taken me long to line up and get my phone on an image. Those time numbers for the Magview seem a bit inflated. Once we got to the end and realized you use Olin, I understood why it came out number 1. Otherwise, great video! Scoring system was great.
Thanks for your thoughts @85Gute. Very good points. Definitely was not a perfect system and after a year of use I have had an opportunity to really put it to the test. Still love it but there are some things I would change for sure.
Nice job, and of course you provide all the scores, so we can all adjust. My thought is that landscape vs portrait is not relevant, given how easy it is to crop pics. The image through the scope is rarely if ever rectangular, so no advantage fitting it into a portrait vs landscape rectangle. I suppose that it can be easier to get to the phone/camera functions in one mode or the other, but once you learn your preference, you won't be switching back and forth (more on this later). If flip/flop is dropped from the scoring PhoneSkope wins. And just in case you think I have product bias, I've owned a PhoneSkope system for a few years, but I'm probably switching to Ollin if they have an eyepiece adapter for my Nikon EDG scope. If not, I'll buy a PhoneSkope case for my new Samsung phone and save about a hundred bucks. One thing that is the same for all systems: unless you carry around a massive tripod, you quickly learn that touching the phone starts everything moving, and you have to wait for the scope/phone to settle down before you can take the picture. There are many bluetooth single function remotes you can use to trigger the shutter, but being able to COMPLETLY control the phone wirelessly is quite an advantage (pics vs video, messing with exposure, etc). I only know how to do it via Android/Samsung, but I'm sure it can be done with other phones as well, so look into it if you have a tablet, or even phone-to-phone. Remote control through a tablet has an additional benefit, though probably not a big deal for hunters. We're wildlife watchers and there are always a bunch of people that stop to ask what we are 'scoping, particularly when we go to Yellowstone. Most scope owners are happy to allow people to take a peek through the scope, but that often requires raising or lowering the scope to accommodate different heights and re-acquiring the subject. We are able to pass around our tablet. The city kids that squeal with delight when they see a critter up close makes it very satisfying.
Thank you SO much for the comment!!! To clarify, Are you saying compare an iphone looking through a spotting scope, vs. a dslr with a long lens? or a dslr connected to a spotting scope?
@@bbazoutdoors3574 I was looking for the same exact thing. I have a gosky and when connecting my phone and at high (max) zoom I’m getting a purple halo around white or bright objects. But if I look through the eyepiece it’s perfectly clear. So I think it’s obviously loosing something in the connection process. But I see there’s a digiscoping connector for a DSLR type camera and it looks like it if like hardwired with a better connection and seeing if anyone had compared them.
FYI, you should be speaking into the front/face of your Yeti, not into the top (and probably add a little bit of extra distance so it doesn't capture your exhales either). This will improve the audio quality of videos.
You are right on Lake! If i was switching up my phone yearly it would add up having to buy a new case each year for sure. Definitely something to consider!
Just picked up a new Samsung s23 ultra. For me it’s between the phone skope and magview, but phone skope edges it out. Having the capabilities to switch between phone cameras is big for me. With magview, acquiring the picture while placing the phone on the binos seems like a task. I like the ease of being able to change to which ever camera lens I need with the phone skope. By the way good review.
Do you have a video highlighting the magview phone app showing how the settings work, if the focus is acquired through the binos or via the phone's auto focus, and how to get better pictures and videos. Is there a way to determine about what zoom level you might be at, and operating details that a user might like to know about. I'm using the B1 binoculars magview adapter. Thanks Jim
Saw your link from CWT, quick lil pro tip about the blue yeti, talk into the logo not the top of the mic. youll get less echo. the condensers are facing front and back, not over top like a dynamic mic. great video though, great info. Ill pass on your magview and probably pick up the ollin as well. :) does the ollin fit on binos well? or only spotters. thanks. 12 Ring
Bryan you are the man!! Thank you for the feedback (pun intended?!?! Haha) definitely new to the blue yeti game. The only “bino” attachment is for the btx’s that I see. Every other attachment is for spotters. Probably something I should have mentioned in the review. Definitely a limitation. But I do all my digiscoping from my spotter.
@@bbazoutdoors3574 no problem! another thing, have the mic in the cardiod pattern unless youre using it to have a conversation with someone and its a central mic. If its just you, Gain low, and Cardiod. aka the heart.
@BBAZ OUTDOORS honestly it's hard to find gear comparisons that haven't been done. But there aren't many that compare more than 2. This gear is relatively cheap. It would get expensive to compare scopes or binoculars. There's a huge market there. It's going to be hard to find a small market like these devices..... find the newest tech? Not sure what to tell you. But this video made up my mind on a product. So thanks for that. Subscribed.
@@bbazoutdoors3574 ok I can NOT find a generic or cheap similar riffle sling like the "Hellomaterials Stalker" rifle sling. So if you can find anything like it, there's your next video.
Only thing in regards to the price of mag and Olin is you wont have to buy another case if you upgrade phones. So basically same price 2 phonescope cases.
Definitely a big limitation on the Ollin side right now and I know they are working hard to add more options. I dont think those are available yet in their system. This is where Phone skope shines! Both are available there.
I have an otterbox phone cse with a hard plastic case that is inside of a larger rubber outer case. Im hoping that the magnet from magview can be in between these layers and work flawlessly. I dont want to use one of these janky phone cases all the time so that is the biggest draw to the magview system. We'll see how it works
U se Phone Skope on my Sig Zulu 6 binos with my Apple 13 pro x and finds that it has difficulty focusing, especially on the right side optics. Is there something I am missing and need to know? Mahalo.
I have a gosky scope and I use the adapter with my iPhone and it just doesn’t do it justice. I look through with my eyes and it’s like viewing HD4K and with the digiscope connection when your getting up to higher zoom/magnifications it gets a strange blueish halo on white things and not crisp it’s almost a bit blurry. There’s gotta be something to help this VERY frustrating
The hue that you are experiencing is called chromatic aberration. Unfortunately the only way to lessen is effects is to buy a scope with higher quality glass. I know, as I owe 2 GoSky Scopes with different quality glass and I can tell the difference.
@@uploadedvideos7907 well thanks for clearing that up. I wasn’t sure if I was doing something wrong or my scope was off or something. I had just upgraded to the go sky from a little scope. And was super excited to finally be able to see at distance clearly. Then the purple halo and lack of perfect focus. Still a 1000X’s better then what I was using prior. I also see that the digiscoping seems to possibly be better if you connect a like real camera not a phone camera there’s a special connector for like Sony dslr type cameras didn’t know if you had tried that way with same results. Lmk. Thanks
@@judd0112 I've never tried using a camera, but in my opinion, I don't think it would help. I believe the issues comes from the layers of glass being used between the camera lens and the subject. You would have to purchase a scope that uses ED glass, Extra-low Dispersion. GoSky has some, but also, I'm not confident in their claim. I tried reaching out to them several times and they never replied. Brands like Kowa and Swarovski definitely have a superior product, but now you're talking about way more cost.
That is a great point that a few others have made and you are right on. Definitely something to consider. I need to do an updated video and talk about that for sure
I just purchased a Magview for my Vortex Scope and l am disappointed because it is terrible to focus during the day and impossible at night. I wish that l tried another model.
What phone? I am not having any of these issues. Had an iPhone 8 before, now iPhone 13pro, with the multiple cameras on the iPhones you must use the magview app.
@@wallypbmerrill9081 First thing I’d say is call them, they answer right away and are helpful. Second, are you using their app? The app forces one camera to work so they arent constantly switching around. The app also can force a manual focus mode, thats why I usually use. Also, enable the grid feature to align and center the camera easily. Last thing, you have to zoom in about 2X to remove the vignetting. When its there it throws off the phone exposure some times and also leaves a vignette, which no ones wants to see. The product works, if you cant get it to work you are doing something wrong, most likely in the camera settings I would imagine.
Couple years from now, phones will have 60X zoom wide angle in UHD with stabilization and the only thing needed will be a 3 Oz phone pod stake to be hands free. The next gen will laugh at us 4 spending 3K for sand (glass) in a ticky tacky case, they all look just the same on the outside.
